Program Objective Assessment

The program is newly started, and as such we have no graduated batch yet. The first batch willgo to market by next year (2017).

The GIK Institute has very strong Alumni association, from whom the institute do collectinformation and they are member of various committees and their inputs are used now and thenfor improvement. However, it is not applicable to our department during this year as no batch isgraduated yet.

There are two plans to measure the graduating students overall performance and PLOachievements in the graduating Students. First we will adopt the Outcome Based Education (OBE).Secondly we will adopt the Alumni survey approach. The later approach is already working inGIK Institute. The OBE is implemented in GIK Institute recently. At this stage we are adoptingOBE system partially, because most of the courses are new and it need to be designed and taughtfirst. Once, our 1st batch is in the market, then it we will move towards preparing courses based onOBE (that will be after 2017). Till then we will be doing Alumni Survey.

Our first batch will go to market in 2017, and we will start Alumni Survey from same year. From2019 (once the program is fully Accredited by National Business Education Accreditation Council, whom basic requirement is that the first batch should be in the market for three years at least, whena program apply for full accreditation for the first time), we will be adopting the Outcome basedlearning as per GIK Institute overall policy.1

1 The program is already registered with regulatory body “National Business Education Accreditation Council(NBEAC)”. However, full accreditation is granted only if a business school/department has first batch in market forthree years and then it meet all the requirement of NBEAC.

Standard 6-2: The process by which students are registered in the program and monitoringof students progress to ensure timely completion of the program must be documented. Thisprocess must be periodically evaluated to ensure that it is meeting its objectives.

Student Registration

After selection of students via entry test based on merit they are automatically registered in theprogram. They later on can pick between either of the specialization stream in their third years ofstudies

Monitoring Student Progress

Their progress are measured during every semester. If some student do not perform well duringMid-term, their parents are informed via phone/letters. Meanwhile, the HoD asks the concernedfaculty to arrange for any tutorial or extra classes if needed for bad performing students. Academicadvisors are also asks to keep an eye on the progress of the students. In case the student still doesnot improve and get another probation, then as per institute policy they may be dropped out fromthe program or can be provided with option to re-admit given that it meet certain minimumrequirement as per Institute standard policy.

Evaluation of Registration and Monitoring System

The registration system is being upgraded and an online registration system is being implementedthat will be functional soon. The current system is also very helpful but the new system is muchbetter with improved features and having more functions of monitoring and control.

Standard 6-3: The process of recruiting and retaining highly qualified faculty membersmust be in place and clearly documented. Also processes and procedures for facultyevaluation, promotion must be consistent with institution mission statement. Theseprocesses must be periodically evaluated to ensure that it is meeting with its objectives.

Faculty Recruitment process and criteria

The process of faculty selection is competitive. Normally, the potential candidate is initiallyinterviewed at departmental level for technical suitability. The candidate has to give a job talk andqualify the initial screening at department level. In next round of selection, the candidate if issuccessful in first round, is recommended to Standard Selection Committee (SSC), that consist ofRector, Pro-Rector (Academic) and Pro-Rector (Administration and Finance) along withDean/Head of the Department. The SSC finalize the candidate after having another extensiveinterview and selection process. They recommend the selected candidate for finalrecommendations to the President of SOPREST, on his approval the final decision is made. Thefollowing are the minimum requirements for the various teaching positions.

Faculty Retention

The institute offers the faculty competitive packages along with on campus accommodationand free health facilities to faculty and its immediate dependent. Besides that, the institute itself isa good place to live on with all facilities and corporative staff. All this make it ideal for those whowant developed world environment within Pakistan.

Faculty Evaluation

The faculty evaluation is done annually. It is based on the Teaching load, studentevaluations, research input, administration load work, knowledge sharing. The concerneddean/Head of the department has to evaluate the faculty member initially every year, and later onit must be endorsed by Pro-Rector (Academic) and the rector of the institute. If a faculty memberperformance is not good, he/she is initially given a warning and his/her annual increment is notgranted, later on if the improvement not happens, the faculty member is given notice period forleaving the job.

Standard 6-4: The process and procedures used to ensure that teaching and delivery ofcourse material to the students emphasizes active learning and that course learning outcomesare met. The process must be periodically evaluated to ensure that it is meeting its objectives.

Effective Teaching

Student attendance is enforced in each class. Failing to attend 80% of total number of classesdisqualifies a student to appear in final exam. Lectures halls are equipped with overhead projectors, desktop projectors and white board to ensure convenient delivery of lectures. Students arefrequently tested with quizzes along with midterm and final exams. A semester long group projectis also given to student in many courses to encourage their active participation in the course.

Evaluating Teaching

At the end of each semester, the course is evaluated for its contents and method of delivery bystudents. The course instructor is notified if there is any room for improvement highlighted by theevaluation by the Dean office

Outcome Based Education

The GIK Institute recently, adopted the Outcome Based Education learning as per PakistanEngineering Council Instructions. The OBE system automatically ensure the delivery ofknowledge with measurable outcomes. Department of Management Sciences, as such do not needthis as a whole system (because National Business Education Accreditation Council, the regulatorybody of the MGS department do not need it). However, MGS do adopted this system for all thecourses which it offer to Engineering Facilities.

Page 40: Self-Assessment Report (SAR) Management... · Self-Assessment Report (SAR) ... The GIK Institute ... Students are required to complete a summer internship in an industry of their

40

Given the good results of this system, it was decided in faculty member that MGS willadopt the said system for all its courses. However, since the degree program is new, and as suchno batch is passed out yet, it was decided to implement it in phases. In first phase, all the courseswill be developed in OBE system guidelines. In second base (one first batch pass out), by that timeall courses outlines will be developed, the system will be fully adopted for BS-ManagementSciences courses as well.

Standard 6-5: The process that ensures that graduates have completed the requirements ofthe program must be based on standards, effective and clearly documented procedures. Thisprocess must be periodically evaluated to ensure that it is meeting its objectives.

The feedback about the quality level of the students may be determined using factors both internalas well as external, however given the situation that no batch is graduate as yet, we do not havemuch option left with us. Following are some of the most common indicators some of which arein use other will be adopted as our graduates are in market.

Feedback from Courses

The most straightforward way to analyze whether the students meet the minimum level of qualityis obtained from the course results. This information is used to see whether the performance andthe understanding of the graduating batch are up to the required standard. Some instructors withtheir years of experience at hand are also able to provide useful information when they teach thesame course to two different batches of students.

Feedback from Employers (Cannot be used for time being)

As a standard practice, GIK Institute take input from employee at national and internationalorganizations when they visit at open house or during their recruitment drive. This opportunity canbe used by Department of Management Sciences as well to know their feedback on the graduatestudents.

Students Going for Further Studies (Cannot be used for time being)

We can seek feedback from students who purse higher studies locally or abroad or prefer to stayin academia later on.

Feedback from Alumni (Cannot be used for time being)

This option will be the best in future because The institute engineering students alumni are activelyinvolved and their forum also provides us with useful suggestions on how to improve the qualityof education in not only academic content but also in terms of academic atmosphere and aura. Some of the alumni are also currently teaching inside the department.

Syed GhulamQadir

Associate Professor

Syed GhulamQadir is an alumnus of Wall Street and Yale University and has overfifteen years of Finance, Investment Banking, and Financial Engineeringexperience in the US and the Middle East. He has also worked as ManagerProjects for the Lakson Group and Regional Sales Manager for KawasakiMotorcycles in Pakistan.

He has developed a new and highly effective portfolio management model. Thedistinctive aspect of this model is that it uses a new measure of risk - Pulse semi-variance. Portfolios that are optimized using Pulse semi-variance consistentlyoutperform portfolios optimized using variance.
