HAPPY NEW YEAR 2020 After 2019’s sailing events seem to have been troubled by trying and sometimes challenging weather conditions, I am sure we all look forward to fairer winds in the coming months of the 2020 sailing season.

This first Scuttlebutt of 2020 includes an invitation to anyone interested in making use of the Club and getting afloat from Vice Commodore Alwyn Evans, an interesting tale from the same person telling how the ‘Devon Dash’ didn’t get quite that far and of course concentrates on the 2020 AGM. Being held once again at the Sussex Yacht Club, Shoreham-by-Sea all are guaranteed a warm welcome and superb hospitality. A great opportunity to support your Commodore Owen Poplett, support the Offshore Sailing Club and enjoy a good social event at the same time. It’s also an opportunity to hear what the club has planned for the coming year and have your say, so do come along, meet like minded voyagers and enjoy the evening.

“This has been a wonderful day!” said the Mole, as the Rat shoved off and took to the sculls again. “Do you know, I’ve never been in a boat before in all my life.” “What?” Cried the Rat, open mouthed: “Never been in a - you never - well I - what have you been doing then?”

SPOSC Members/Potential Members, anyone interested in Sailing with SPOSC. Question. From Alwyn Evans, Vice Commodore & Treasurer

I am hoping that many of you will have read some of my previous articles ‘banging on about coming sailing.’ If you haven’t, and some how missed out, well here’s another one!

A question to those of you who are members of SPOSC, or who may have read Scuttlebutt or spoken with a SPOSC member(s), but have not sailed with us yet or for sometime. Or who maybe thinking you want to come sailing with us again or for the first time. Maybe you are concerned about your experience or lack of it. Or you think you don’t know anyone to come sailing with.

Is there anything that we as Committee, members or the club, do for you that would make it easier for you to join us on a sailing trip?

Irrespective of your ‘wish list’, ideas, suggestions, or possible concerns, please email me [email protected] or ring me 07789225520 to discuss.

If necessary if it’s something you don’t wish to be shared with others for some reason then please let me know accordingly. I will respect your privacy.

I will respond to all replies and obviously see what we can do to try and get more people out sailing with us next season.

Looking forward to seeing you afloat in 2020!

RegardsAlwyn

SCUTTLEBUTT

The Devon Dash - ‘or not!’ by Alwyn Evans December 2018. I sit before the blazing coal fire putting the 2019 SPOSC Sailing Calendar together listening to the radio. ‘And now for the Shipping forecast, Viking, N o r t h U t s i r e , G e r m a n Bite.....Humber.......Wight.....Gale Force Winds expected soon.’ I cast a small smile and think to myself ‘Well we won’t get that on the summer August Passage Trip.’ This annua l even t g i ve s member s the opportunity and experience of sailing outside of the Solent, in Mediterranean conditions, with blue skies and azure waters. After all we are an ‘Offshore Sailing Club’ and it’s what we used to do in abundance! The Autumn 2018 Passage had been a cracking cross channel to Cherbourg and Channel Islands trip, so for variation ‘The Devon Dash’ to the West Country was arranged. Interest from members was initially very good, but as always for various reasons some fell away ending in a core of 7 and a 43ft Dufour Grand Large was booked from Port Hamble Marina.

Simple. Plan 1 put together. Depart Hamble on the west going tide at 0100 hrs on Monday 19th August, sail to various ports west, Poole, Weymouth, Dartmouth. Enjoy good sailing, foods, company and wine. Return Port Hamble by Friday.

Several weeks before the trip, individual personal circumstances saw a couple members drop out, some replacements were press ganged in. And so it was the final team of Erika Owen, Penny Furtado, Dave Cherry, Graham Castell and myself arrived at the yacht, Rever on Sunday evening. Victuals loaded, safety briefing and looking forward to a summer sail. Warm zephyr breezes, gentle rolling waves, sereneness in sunny August to the beautiful ports of Dorset and Devon. Wrong! Let me describe the scene for you. Dressed in our foulies, sea boots, life jackets and harnesses, the air was thick with tension, anticipation and concern! We clustered round the VHF radio. The silence was excruciating, the seconds ticking by thick

and heavy, time itself gorging on the tension in the humid cabin air. Our shadows danced across the sides of the cabin in the failing light.

An authoritative but concerned voice echoed from the crackling speaker. The air seemed to tighten further, like a leather strap pulled taut. Cohesively we all moved closer to absorb the details so important on which our futures depended. Later when we were upon heaving seas, spume and mackerel flying across the decks during the night in gale force winds, that voice would be in bed, hankered beneath their duvet safe, secure and warm....and probably unconcerned about our plight!

‘Here is the shipping forecast for sea areas,’ as the details of the weather for next and following 24 hours was issued.

SCUTTLEBUTTThe Devon Dash continued- ‘Viking.....Dogger.....Wight......Inshore Forecast Selsey Bill to Lyme Regis. Strong Wind Warning.......Wind westerly, Force 2-4 increasing Force 4-6 at times 7........’ We fell away from the radio concerned but stalwart in our endeavour to reach Poole and Dartmouth! On examining on line wind websites for Western Solent, actual up to date wind speed was showing 38 knots out there and not looking much better for Monday. Bring on the mackerel! The cabin as silent and still as a pain of glass. We all contemplated our fate for some moments. Thoughts of loved ones back home....personal insurance!.....Then a voice rose above the disappointed mood and concerns of the crew considering battling the high seas, spume and mackerel across the decks! ‘Another gin and tonic please landlord.’ Plan 2, No crew vote required. We’ll see what happens in the morning!!! Stay in the marina overnight. Plan 3 check weather in morning, meet up with Len Wheeler on his vessel ‘Anita’ with crew Frank Hopper and two guests and make for possibly Poole. Meanwhile Chris Young on the able cruiser/racer ‘Twister’ and crew joining us on this ‘rally’ were still storm bound in Eastbourne marina. ‘Anita’ and crew had a demanding and tortuous sail from Chichester to Gosport on the Sunday. 5 hrs of battling the elements and high seas. On Monday morning ready for departure they incurred engine problems and stayed in Gosport for the day for repairs. Twister no change......static, moored up due to high winds and seas. Rever, Plan 3. Initially we sailed eastwards towards Portsmouth to meet up with Anita. Once we heard of their plight and that they were going nowhere that day, we made westwards to Poole and the Devon Dash. ‘It’s gotta be done!’

Monday lunchtime sailing west, wind now 28 knots, wind against tide, sea state lumpy, white horses in the Solent. Gusts up to 35 knots. 2 reefs in main sail, half a head sail out. No sign yet of the mackerel, but their out their somewhere and the spume is certainly with us!

And here is the Shipping Forecast for sea areas....Cromarty.........Wight....Strong Winds Forecast, South Westerly 4-6, at times 7.’ With 35 knots across the deck instruments and recorded on Bramble Bank weather station………..decision.....? Abandon Plan 3, go for Plan 4, after struggling to reach just south of River Beaulieu, (this location will feature later!) with no other yachts or shipping about us,

turn, cut and run to Cowes as a safe haven! Erika, new to this sailing game, was struggling with the concept of why we had sailed 27 miles about the Solent when we were still only 5 miles from our departure point! So much to learn Erika! We soon had the safety and security of Cowes Yacht Haven. That evening Penny concocted a delicious Thai curry enjoyed by all aboard with perhaps a small glass of wine to celebrate our safe arrival, but not in Poole. Anita still stuck in Gosport, Twister still in Eastbourne.

Plan 5. Weather forecast is for wind to abate but still from the west. Tuesday morning muster for duty at 0430, depart on west going tide to Studland Bay Poole, drop anchor, lunch, catch change of tide to take us west to Weymouth. Easy peezy, what can go wrong! As they say ‘Jobs a jazzer!’ Nope! Chuck out Plan 5, bring in Plan 6, Overnight issues saw us departing at 0500 to Hamble where unfortunately Erika had to say farewells to the crew to attend to personal matters at home. Great shame! Will we make it to Poole I ask myself ? However, for compensation we all saw a lovely sunrise.

Rever south of Beaulieu beating hard towards Poole.

SCUTTLEBUTTThe Devon Dash continued- Tuesday morning Sunrise. Plan 7. Breakfast at Hamble and make for Poole.....Oh dear, think this is where we started from and heard that one before! The mention of the word ‘Poole’ on the yacht is now becoming rather tedious! Must discuss with crew about banning the word for the rest of the week! Departed against tide. Multiple tacking back and forth down western Solent. 1400 all now starting to feel rather tired from early dawn start. Wind 25knts. Still wind against tide, crap sea state. Estimated 5 hrs tacking and beating to go to that dreaded ‘P’ place at least. Abandon Plan 7, go for Plan 8, collapse into Yarmouth. Meanwhile Anita departed 0500 to France. Further engine problem, retired back to Gosport. 0300 Twister departs Eastbourne, heavy winds, light winds, no winds, 15 hrs later collapse in Gosport. Plan 9. Shipping forecast predicts winds Variable 1-2.!!! What’s going on!!!! On line weather websites - actual wind ‘zilch.’ Getting bored now, but don’t mention the word ‘Poole!’ Depart Yarmouth for lunch at Newtown Creek. No wind, east going tide. Hopefully meet Twister, Chris Young and crew at Lymington Town Quay later.

!Plan 10, crew mutiny, ignore Newtown Creek lunch stop. Going to Beaulieu. Bit of an issue en route as to where Beaulieu actually is! (Did pass near to it on Monday remember) Few red herrings (or perhaps mackerel) thrown in. Plans 10/1, 10/2 but we make Beaulieu eventually and do the river tourist trip up the river and out again. Plan 11, abandon lunch Beaulieu river, wind from west eventually kicks in, tide running west, great tacking, beating sail to Lymington and Town Quay. Tapas evening

on board as the sun sets. Surprise surprise Twister joins us on the same mooring for drinks and tales ensue.

! The crew of the yacht we are tied up against mention they have just come from Poole. ‘Are you taking the.........’ but I’m pulled away by my crew. That’s the end of that new relationship, we totally ignore them and look forward to an early departure. They look at us rather strangely! Proposed Plan 12, racing each other round the back of the Isle of Wight. Plan cancelled. Twister decide to actually make for that ‘Poo,,!’ place, (really dislike that Harbour now) and Weymouth (starting to join the banned word list) at 0700 Thursday morning as they are out for a few more days than us and want the accolade of being the yacht that reaches furthest west on the Devon Dash. How vain! We formulate Plan 13/1 draft and yet to be ratified. Depart 0800, tack out through Needles and catch tide going east around the back of the Isle of Wight, and then up to Cowes. Sort of a one boat Round the Island Race! This is actually finally a great success. But not the westward Devon Dash we anticipated as for most of the time we sailed eastwards! Must order a new compass and set of maps!

Exited Lymington and sails up by 0830. Beautiful day, sunny, steady westerly winds all day. Tides in our favour throughout. Superb sailing conditions south of the island. We ‘Goose winged, or as the French would say, (not after 31st October perhaps?) ‘Papillon’ the sails and had speeds over the ground of 10+ knots at times.

Arrived at the Bembridge tidal gate earlier than expected for tide to take us back up the Eastern Solent so anchored in the idyllic Priory Bay, north of Bembridge for lunch and a swim. Hence Plan 12/1 revised.

! Departed Priory Bay 1500 and again great beat and tacking up eastern Solent to Cowes and arrived 1700 completing 55 nautical miles. An evening meal in Cowes Pier View pub was well deserved and welcomed as this was

our first night out! Well nearly!😂

Meanwhile Anita took the challenge and departed to Cherbourg Thursday lunchtime and after further engine issues, tide changes and variable winds arrived Cherbourg 0130 Friday morning. Twister made Studland Bay, found they had shed their propellor and had to sail back to Lymington, ripped their sail en route and needed a tow into Lymington, hoisted out and a new propellor.

SCUTTLEBUTTThe Devon Dash continued- Tuesday morning Sunrise. Twister in Lymington under repair, Anita now in Guernsey. Well done Lenny and crew overcoming all obstacles and salvaging some great sailing. Also Chris Young and crew to nearly making a Devon Dash! You get the award as the winners of the prize for the revised ‘Dorset Dash, a bag of mackerel! So well done to everyone for a challenging week. Tried so hard for all to meet up as a mini rally, Plan 2/2 draft, proposal but never happened. However that’s what happens when all boats are coming from different ports and experience various weather and wind systems as well as mechanical issues. What did we achieve? Confused Erika in the arts of navigation and making best use of your sea time and mileage. In t roduced some c rew to the experience of sailing around the back of the Isle of Wight, understanding the Shipping Forecast, flexibility when sailing. How it pays to have a contingency plan or even several plans!. Coping with reefing and heavy weather sailing. Where Beaulieu River is! So if you have enjoyed this story come along in 2020 on the Passage Trip. Can guarantee bloody Poole ain’t gonna be on the list of places to visit!

Sussex Police Offshore Sailing Club Annual General Meeting 2020 Commodores Report

Dear Members,

During the past year, SPOSC members have again enjoyed some great charters. Hopefully you have been able to read about them in Scuttlebutt and seen the pictures on the website. As a club we are privileged to have the excellent Scuttlebutt magazine, I appreciate the time and effort put in by Terry Clothier to create such an amusing and informative publication. We are also very lucky to have such a professional website, Dusty Miller puts many hours into maintaining and updating the site and the clubs Facebook pages. I hope you will all join me in thanking them both for all their hard work.

The committee have also been giving their time to effectively manage the club. I don’t like to single out individuals as the whole committee work hard, but the treasurer Alwyn Evans and Secretary Kevin Claxton do have to give up more of their time to perform their roles so efficiently. Without the committee members we would have no club to belong to and enjoy. I thank them all for their support.

I am pleased to be able to report, that by actively attending recruit training, membership of the Sussex Police Sports Association has started to increase. Unfortunately it will take some time for membership levels to approach what they used to be. In 2019 the SPSA agreed the full grant requested by SPOSC.

During 2019 SPOSC continued to offer support to members seeking RYA qualifications. Four members did approach the club but were unable to find suitably priced courses within travelling distance, they will hopefully be successful during 2020. The committee has already drafted a 2020 sailing calendar and Frostbite will be advertised very shortly. All other charters will be opened up at the February AGM so please come along and sign up to be sure of your place.

I would like to thank those members who skippered boats last year and organised charters. If you hold a Day Skipper qualification or above, please consider putting yourself forward for mentoring. Without skippers we cannot charter boats. You will get to choose where you charter from and where the sailing will take you during the charter, subject to club guidelines.

I look forward to seeing many of you at the AGM to discuss the club’s business and then for an opportunity for a catch up, sailing chatter, a few laughs and of course the presentation of awards afterwards during the buffet. May we all enjoy fair winds and glorious sailing in 2020.

Sussex Police Offshore Sailing Club Secretary’s Report 2019 - 2020

Dear Members,

Dear SPOSC Members,

As Secretary, I am pleased to join the rest of the Committee in welcoming you to the Annual General Meeting of the Sussex

Police Offshore Sailing Club, which will take place on Tuesday 11th February 2020, at the Sussex Yacht Club, Shoreham-By-

Sea.

I am happy to report on the functions of the Committee, over the last year. We worked to reinvigorate the AGM last year, and

this year we are following the same meeting plan, to conduct the business of the meeting in a timely manner so as to leave ample

time for a social event afterwards. We hope that members who attended last year will spread the word, and we hope to see more

members attending this year. We would also ask that members (particularly serving officers & staff), mention the event to any

prospective new members who may be interested in joining.

During the last year the Committee has held active meetings, which have largely resulted in the delivery of the planned sails for

this year, and the planning necessary for this year’s AGM, and for next year’s sailing programme. The meetings have been well

attended with good representation from the officers of the club and the area representatives. I am happy that the business of

meetings has been well- conducted, with minutes being recorded, and ‘actions’ have been progressed as you would expect.

As well as Secretary’s duties I participated in club sails in Frostbite and elsewhere and in Greece with several SPOSC colleagues.

I look forward to doing more of the same in 2020, starting with ‘Frostbite’. I therefore join the Committee in stressing the

benefits of club membership (in both its sporting and social activities) to members old and new, and I look forward to seeing

many established and new members out on the water in the coming year.

Kind regards, and ‘Happy New Year’,

Kevin Claxton Secretary Sussex Police Offshore Sailing Club.

Sussex Police Offshore Sailing Club Treasurer’s Report 2019 - 2020

Despite Brexit!, as Treasurer I am pleased to report that the clubs finances remain in a healthy state for the coming sailing season with the ability to finance the SPOSC scheduled cruising & race charters for 2020 season as well as any subsidised RYA Training.

In addition to the published SPOSC Calendar for the coming year, the Committee are always pleased to receive and encourage, additional requests for Charters from all members. So ‘skippers’ please ‘look lively, shake a leg’ and either volunteer to skipper/mate on a charter or suggest an alternative that you wish to arrange.

For 2019, the club financed 3 charter yachts for Frostbite week, a Passage/Round the Island trip in August and the National Crime Agency & PSUK Racing Regatta in September.

An Introduction to SPOSC Day Sail to encourage all Police Staff to become new members to SPOSC went ahead in June, but due to a ‘technical problem’ with the yacht during the event, the day had to be abandoned and we secured a full credit of £517 from Commodore Yachting.

Cruising & Racing

➢  Members contributions amounted to £3583 and SPSA payments £304.20. SPSA payments have to be transferred to the SPSA account.

➢  SPSA grant was £4130 for combined Cruising & Racing Charters for year 2019- 2020. No reduction in grant as in previous years

➢  The total cost of Cruising & Racing Chartering amounted to £6080, part of which was financed from the previous season.

➢  Club Insurance £840

➢  The finances of the Club are such that we have sufficient funds to finance Charter deposits from our 2019 funding into 2020 as well as any other RYA training courses. The daily contribution by Members for daily sailing remains unchanged at £20 per day plus £1 RNLI contribution.

Members donation to RNLI this year will be £135

SPOSC Committee will make application to SPSA for the 2020-2021 Cruising & Racing grants of £4130.

Rule 7 of the Club rules require the Committee at each AGM to ‘set a cap’ to limit the liability that each crew member may be liable

for. SPOSC will then pay the balance of any damage up to the excess. The figure for 2020 will remain unchanged at £100 per each

charter and member.

In addition to the above finances, with agreement of the SPSA, SPOSC has accrued a fund of £5000 in order to pay all our own

refundable security deposits when chartering.

Looking forward to meeting new and current members at the AGM at Sussex Yacht Club Shoreham by Sea on Tuesday 11th

February 2020.

Please come along to support your club and enjoy a social evening chatting through past and future trips. A full ukulele band has

been laid on to encourage your attendance!

Hoping you have a great 2020 sailing season.

There was a discussion about how to encourage younger officers and staff to join the club with members

making various suggestions and pointing out that it is an age old problem.

Due to SPSA funds not being as healthy as they used to be, there was a discussion about membership of

SPOSC when members are not contributing to the SPSA. It was pointed out that if a member wanted to go

on one of the club charters then they did have to pay the SPSA membership fee. Retired members will be

encouraged to sign up for the force lottery which helps fund the SPSA.

The possibility of day sails was also discussed but it was accepted that there are financial and practical

issues.
