The Friends of the Battleship North Carolina held their 3rd Annual Crew Reunion Luncheon on May 31st of this year. Returning crew members and their families enjoyed lunch below deck in the mess deck on the tour route. Previous years’ events were held in the wardroom but because of the success of the event, it was moved to the much larger mess deck. The extra space made for a much more enjoyable experience for all.

Friends Board members were on hand to serve up sandwiches and ice cream, a normal staple during the North Carolina’s active service. Although most of you know that sandwiches were a regular staple for the crew, especially during combat, some of you may not know that the ship had the ability to make it’s own ice cream. It also had a “mechanical cow” which could make milk out of sea water, with a few helpful ingredients. Ice cream from battleships actually had a trade value, which the battleships used to trade with smaller, more freshly-supplied ships and submarines for items they needed, and sometimes just wanted, like fresh eggs or meat or even parts. We one-upped it a little by having not just chocolate and vanilla, but also butter pecan, with all the sprinkles.

Now, sandwiches and ice cream help to form the bond between the Friends and the Battleship Association, which includes the crew members and their families.

The Friends also increased their bond with some regular guests to the ship because we had too much food and ice cream. Friends board members served sandwiches and ice cream to ship guests who happened to be at the right place at the right time. Those guests got an unexpected bonus to have lunch with the former crew and most made a donation to show their support.

The luncheon occurs every reunion Saturday at 11:00 following the crew’s memorial service on the fantail. All Friends members are invited to come and have lunch with the Board and the former crew and their families. It is a great chance to meet the former crew members and hear their stories in an informal environment. The Living History Crew also takes part, as well as some of the invitees to the memorial service, including performers, guests, Marines, and even the press.

The credit for the success of this event goes to many people but I would like personally thank Lou Popovich and Kirk Barton of the Battleship Association for their continued support of this event. Without them this event would not happen. Thank you my friends. We will see you next year. h

June 2014

The Battleship 101 and Legacy series went well this month. Lots of folks touring the ship and actually listening and learning something.

We received another rave review of our ship from a man and his son on a cross country museum ship tour. Their T-shirts had all the ships listed that they had seen from Hawaii to NC. The silhouette of the USS NC was at the top front of the shirt. They loved that we had so much of the ship open.

As the warm weather creeps in, I notice more folks abandoning the Lower Deck tour to get some air.

A church bus load of elderly folks came to tour the ship. They enjoyed what they saw, but it was too much for a lot of them.

A boiler instructor took several photos in the engine room. We talked and discussed the turbines, condenser, boilers, superheaters, economizers, everything. He wanted to show his students the battleship system. I mentioned the Power Plant program we have. But, he was from Montana.

July 2014

I was leaving about 1100 July 3. You remember, Hurricane Arthur day. I had to stop for an alligator to cross the access road on his way back to the ship.

UNCW marine camp kids came out to learn about the gyroscopes and engineering programs three times this month.

92 year old Roy Anderson made the trip down from Boston to see the ship. He is an original crew member. Being pretty frail, he didn’t make it to the engine room where he was a Machinist mate. But, he had a great time enjoying all the other visitors that wanted a photo or just to talk with him for a moment. He brought a flag for us to hoist.

He has no close relatives. He lost 3 sons to the Vietnam Conflict. Thanks to his Bartender and another friend that brought him on the trip.

Upon seeing the 16 inch guns, Roy reflected on WWII. He said “God and those big guns brought me home”

Lots of visitors this month. Plenty of kids showing their parents around the ship. The weather cooled off some and it was pleasant on the ship for a few days. h

Friends Treasurer, Don Loftin, accepting an $800 grant from Stephen Gaskins, President of the New Hanover County Community Foundation for “continuing education”.

Patricia Lawler, Southeastern Regional Associate of NHCCF who brought the check, took this photo. Thank you, NHCCF! h
