Weather Vane

How It Works

● Free rotating stick with an arrow which turns according to the wind direction

● The tail is pushed by the wind

● The head points toward the direction of the wind

● To get an accurate reading, you have to make sure that the weather vane is in motion

● Measures which direction the wind is coming from

Hygrometer

● Measures humidity (amount of moisture in the air)

● The unit of measure for vapor pressure is called millibars

How It Works

● Moisture collects in hair causing it to expand

● Expansion moves pointer down

● Negative numbers on the scale shows that there is more moisture in the air

Relationship

● We found that when there is humidity, chances of rain is high.

Rain Gauge

● Measure amount of rainfall in cubic inches

How It Works

● made a scale based on 3 ¼ tsp = 1 cu. in.

● Put bottle on a flat surface with no obstructions

● Wait for rain and empty after every rain event

Relationship

● We found that when there is more rain, the humidity is higher.

Thermometer

● Measures temperature in degrees fahrenheit● On my scale one centimeter is equal to eight

degrees fahrenheit

How It Works

● When the temperature goes up, rubbing alcohol expands and moves up the water in the straw

● Every 8 degrees it goes up one centimeter

Relationship

● We found that temperature goes up when its hot

Anemometer

● Measures wind speed in miles per hour

How It Works

● when the wind blows the anemometer spins

● faster the wind blows, the more revolutions the anemometer makes

● rpm * diameter * 0.003 = wind speed

Barometer

● Measures atmospheric pressure in inches● Atmospheric pressure is force exerted on a surface by the

weight of the air

How It Works

● When atmospheric pressure increases, air presses against the surface and liquid is pushed up the straw

● When atmospheric pressure decreases the liquid in the straw goes down

Relationship

● Usually, decreasing atmospheric pressure indicates that rain is coming
