Real Madrid CF and Rosenborg BK have similar records in Group F this season. Both have beaten Olympiacos CFP, and both have lost to Olympique Lyonnais, so have similar reasons for a positive result from this match. Two previous meetings The two clubs have twice previously found themselves in the same UEFA Champions League group. Significantly, on each occasion, Madrid went on to win the trophy after playing Rosenborg in the group stage. First fixture In 1997/98, they were paired in a group where, as now, Olympiacos also featured. Madrid won 4-1 at home with Christian Panucci, Zé Roberto and Raúl González scoring in the first half for Madrid, to a reply from Jahn Ivar Jakobsen. Fernando Morientes stretched the lead to 4-1 after the interval. In Trondheim, Rosenborg secured one of their finest victories with Roar Strand and Harald Brattbakk scoring in the 2-0 success against a Madrid team that would lift the trophy. Teams meet again Two seasons later, in the 1999/00 second group stage, Madrid triumphed 3-1 at home. It came through late goals from Sávio and Roberto Carlos after earlier efforts from Raúl and John Carew had produced a stalemate at 1-1 with five minutes left. When the sides met in Trondheim, an early strike from Raúl proved to be decisive. Madrid again went though to win the final after playing Rosenborg – with Valencia CF the victims this time. Two other Norwegian ties Madrid have met two other Norwegian clubs. In the first round of the 1988/89 European Champion Clubs' Cup, the Spanish giants beat FK Moss 3-0 at home and 1-0 in Norway for a 4-0 aggregate win with Emilio Butragueño scoring in both legs. And before meeting Rosenborg in the 1999/00 UEFA Champions League second group stage, Madrid met FK Molde in the first group stage. Madrid won 4-1 at home with goals from Morientes, Sávio (2) and Guti and 1-0 in Norway with Christian Karembeu on the scoresheet. Real Madrid CF and Rosenborg BK have similar records in Group F this season. Both have beaten Olympiacos CFP, and both have lost to Olympique Lyonnais, so have similar reasons for a positive result from this match.

Two previous meetings • The two clubs have twice previously found themselves in the same UEFA Champions League group. Significantly, on each occasion, Madrid went on to win the trophy after playing Rosenborg in the group stage.

First fixture • In 1997/98, they were paired in a group where, as now, Olympiacos also featured.

Teams meet again • Two seasons later, in the 1999/00 second group stage, Madrid triumphed 3-1 at home.

Two other Norwegian ties • Madrid have met two other Norwegian clubs. In the first round of the 1988/89 European Champion Clubs' Cup, the Spanish giants beat FK Moss 3-0 at home and 1-0 in Norway for a 4-0 aggregate win with Emilio Butragueño scoring in both legs.

Match facts: Real Madrid v Rosenborg

• Rosenborg are looking for their first win in Spain. On six previous visits the Norwegian side have drawn twice and lost four times.

Last Spanish trip • The last time Rosenborg played in Spain was in the 2003/04 UEFA Champions League third qualifying round, where they lost 1-0 at RC Deportivo La Coruña, conceding the only goal in the two legs.

• Aside from the two Madrid meetings in the UEFA Champions League, Rosenborg have played one other Spanish club in the competition. It came in the 1998/99 group stage against Athletic Club Bilbao. Rosenborg drew 1-1 away and won 2-1 at home.

Real Madrid key facts • The statistics do not lie as Real Madrid have scored 800 goals in 383 games in UEFA club competition of which 216 have ended in victory with 70 draws and 97 defeats. Only 420 goals have been conceded.

• The vast majority of these games – 285 - have been played in the European Champion Clubs' Cup and/or the UEFA Champions League. Put into context with their 31 rivals in this season’s competition, Bayern are second on 200, while the total matches played by Madrid’s group rivals, Olympique Lyonnais (50), Olympiacos CFP (84) and Rosenborg BK (108), all teams with vast experience, when combined still falls short of the Spanish club's impressive record.

• This season marks their ninth successive qualification for the UEFA Champions League group stage, a period in which they have won the competition on three occasions (1997/98, 1999/00 and 2001/02) as well as advancing to the knockout stages in all nine campaigns.

• Overall, Madrid have played in 12 European Champion Clubs' Cup finals, winning nine of them. Their three most recent victories in the UEFA Champions League era have come at the expense of Juventus (1-0, 1997/98), Valencia CF (3-0, 1999/00) and Bayer 04 Leverkusen (2-1, 2001/02).

• Madrid failed to qualify for UEFA club competition for the 1996/97 season. In the season prior to that, they had made it to the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League in what was their first participation in the competition since it kicked off in 1992/93.

• Last season, Madrid finished second by four points to FC Barcelona in last season's Spanish Primera División with Villarreal CF and Real Betis Balompié a further 15 and 18 points adrift in third and fourth place.

• Madrid advanced to the 2005/06 UEFA Champions League group stage as one of the 16 automatic qualifiers, but lost their opening match 3-0 away to Lyon, a result matched by their opening day result of the previous season when Bayer 04 Leverkusen recorded

the same scoreline against the Spanish giants.

• Despite their problems from Matchday 1, Madrid managed to record their first victory of this season's competition at home to Olympiacos although they left it late. Madrid scored four minutes from time through Roberto Soldado to record a 2-1 win. The Spanish side had taken the lead through Raúl González after nine minutes only for Pantelis Kafes to equalise three minutes into the second half for the visitors.

• Real Madrid CF captain Raúl González became the first Madrid player to finish on the winning side six times at Atlético's Vicente Calderón stadium following their 3-0 weekend success in domestic action.

• Goalkeeper Iker Casillas and left-back Roberto Carlos are the only players yet to miss a minute of league action so far this season. Both have clocked up 630 minutes.

• Roberto Carlos scored his eleventh international goal with a free-kick in Brazil's 3-0 victory over Venezuela in FIFA World Cup qualifying. Team-mate Ronaldo was also on target with what was his 66th goal for Brazil, and is now only eleven behind Pelé.

• Central defender Sergio Ramos scored his first international goals against San Marino - one in each half - to become the eighth-youngest player ever to score for Spain.

• Six Madrid players are candidates for world player of the year – David Beckham, Roberto Carlos, Raúl González, Ronaldo, Robinho and Zinedine Zidane.

• Forty years separate Madrid's first goals in both the European Champion Clubs' Cup and the UEFA Champions League. On both occasions, their rivals were Swiss. Captain Miguel Muñoz had the honour of opening the scoring in Madrid's European debut in the 2-0 win against Servette FC on 8 September 1955, finding the net in the 74th minute.

• Four decades later, Chilean striker Iván Zamorano had the pleasure of scoring the club's first goals in the UEFA Champions League, scoring twice at home against Grasshopper-Club on 27 September 1995. Madrid had lost their opening match in the group stage away to AFC Ajax, for whom Marc Overmars scored the only goal of the game.

• Héctor Rial scored Madrid's first hat-trick in Europe in the first round of the 1957/58 European Champion Clubs' Cup as the Spanish side defeated R. Antwerp FC 6-0 on 28 November 1957. Rial's three goals all came in the opening period as Madrid cruised to a 3-0 interval lead.

• Since then, nine other players have chalked up three goals or more in the competition, namely: Alfredo Di Stéfano, Ferenc Puskás, Amancio Amaro, José Martínez Pirri, Sebastián Losada, Hugo Sánchez, Emilio Butragueño and Fernando Hierro. Raúl González was the last to achieve a three-goal haul, doing so at home to Hungarian outfit Ferencvárosi TC on 18 October 1995.

• The last players to have scored on their European debut for Madrid are Javier Portillo and Roberto Soldado.

• Sergio Ramos will sit out Matchday 3 having picked up a red card and a one-match ban in Madrid's 2-1 victory at home against Olympiacos CFP on the second matchday.

Rosenborg key facts • Such has been their recent dominance of Norwegian football, Rosenborg have been involved in every UEFA Champions League since the 1995/96 season with the exception of the 2003/04 campaign when they exited the competition at the third qualifying round stage. They lost 1-0 on aggregate to Spanish side RC Deportivo La Coruña for whom Alberto Luque scored the only goal of the tie in the 16th minute of the second leg at the Riazor stadium.

• Rosenborg thus switched to the UEFA Cup where they defeated FK Ventspils and FK Crvena Zvezda before exiting on away goals to SL Benfica in the third round.

• Their best performance to date in UEFA club competition coincides with their only involvement in the knockout stages of the UEFA Champions League, when in the 1996/97 season, the Norwegian side lost 3-1 on aggregate to the eventual beaten finalists, Juventus.

• To date in UEFA club competition, Rosenborg have played on 134 occasions with 52 wins, 26 draws and 56 defeats. In that spell, the Norwegian side have scored 204 goals while conceding 225 times.

• Last year, Rosenborg won the 2004 Norwegian Tippeligaen on goal difference from Vålerenga IF.

• It meant once more, the dreaded third qualifying round, which for Rosenborg has become a habit with six appearances in the past six seasons. This season, they improved their record to five wins from six by defeating Romanian champions FC Steaua Bucuresti.

• The two sides shared a 1-1 draw in Bucharest with Constantin Iacob putting the home side ahead after 30 minutes only for Norwegian international striker Thorstein Helstad to equalise five minutes from time. Rosenborg took control in the return leg in Trondheim as they raced to a three-goal lead thanks to the efforts of Jan Gunnar Solli (38), Alexander Ødegaard (57) and the misfortune of Mirel Radoi (60) who put through his own net. But Radoi (74) atoned for his error and when Iacob (76) added a second for the visitors, Rosenborg had to dig deep to keep the hopes of a group stage berth alive.

• With Steaua tamed, Rosenborg stunned Greek champions Olympiacos CFP by recording a 3-1 away victory on the opening matchday. Olympiacos actually opened the scoring thanks to Alejandro Lago’s own goal after 19 minutes, but Rosenborg were level by the break thanks to Per Ciljan Skjelbred (42). The home side then scored an own goal of their own through Dimitrios Mavrogenidis three minutes into the second period before Rosenborg scored their third goal four minutes into added time through Øyvind Storflor.

• But the Norwegian champions were unable to extend their unbeaten run. Lyon came knocking and continued their impressive form. Cris scored the only goal of the game on the stroke of half-time.

• Forward Thorstein Helstad scored Norway's only goal in the 1-0 away win against Belarus in their last FIFA World Cup qualifier. Norway will now meet the Czech Republic in a November play-off for a ticket to reach the 2006 FIFA World Cup finals in Germany.

• In addition to Helstad, Rosenborg also had Jan Gunnar Solli and Daniel Braaten in the Norway squad for the qualifiers against Moldova and Belarus. Goalkeeper Espen Johnsen was called up, but pulled out with a knee injury. Per Ciljan Skjelbred had to withdraw from the Norwegian Under-21 squad due to sickness.

• Alejandro Lago was in the Uruguay squad for the final World Cup qualifiers against Argentina and Ecuador, but did not make an appearance.

• The last meeting between Rosenborg and Madrid in the UEFA Champions League was on 22 March 2000 - a Raúl González goal on three minutes was enough to secure Madrid the victory at the Lerkendal stadium. Of the Rosenborg players on the field that night, three are still in the squad today – right-back Christer Basma and midfielders Roar Strand and Ørjan Berg. Only Strand is expected to start, however.

• Roar Strand has featured in all four of Rosenborg's games against Madrid, even scoring in the 2-0 win at Lerkendal on 27 November 1997. Harald Martin Brattbakk scored the other goal.

• Rosenborg endured six league defeats in a row in August and September, but things are now looking up for the club as they are unbeaten in their last three outings.

Per-Mathias Høgmo

Head coach profiles

The well-travelled Vanderlei Luxemburgo, who has won five Brazilian championships with four different clubs, is aiming to match that level of success in Europe with Real Madrid CF. He took over at the Bernebéu in December 2004, seemingly the answer to Madrid's need for a coach capable of organising an attack-minded squad that plays good football.

Luxemburgo's playing career as a left-back was cut short by a knee injury. He took his first coaching job at Rio de Janiero's Campo Grande AC in 1983 but he failed to make any great impression in his early days, coaching 13 clubs in ten years. Highlights were a stint in Saudi Arabia, an unsuccessful spell with CR Flamengo and a Paulista title with Guarani FC.

His breakthrough came when he took over ambitious and well-financed EC Palmeiras in 1993 and led them to two successive Brazilian titles and one Copa do Brasil. After a second spell with Flamengo and a brief return to Palmeiras, he led SC Corinthians to the Brazilian title in 1998. That earned him the job of Brazil coach, but his two-year spell in charge of the seleção was deemed a failure despite a 1999 Copa América triumph, and he was dismissed after a series of off-the-field problems. However, Luxemburgo bounced back at Cruzeiro EC and then Santos FC, winning successive titles in 2003 and 2004 - credentials which earned him a move to Madrid.

Per-Mathias Høgmo was an industrious winger for Gratangen IL, FK Mjølner, Tromsø IL and IFK Norrköping in the late 1970s and 1980s, but made a name for himself when he turned his attentions to coaching. His only playing honour was the 1986 Norwegian Cup with Tromsø in 1986; as a coach he has won Olympic gold.

He started his coaching career in 1989, leading several local sides in the Tromsø area before moving east to take over at Moss FK. After that stint he took the position that was to win him fame, Norway women's coach, having previously been involved with the men's Under-16 team. Although Norway relinquished their hold on the FIFA Women's World Cup in 1999, finishing fourth, they claimed Olympic gold a year later when beating the United States 3-2 in Sydney.

Høgmo returned to men's coaching with the Norway U21 side but was unable to match his previous success, and in late 2003 became Tromsø coach. Before his arrival they had narrowly avoided relegation, but in his year in charge finished fourth to earn a place in the newly-formed pan-Scandinavian Royal League. Høgmo, however, stepped down and spent some time outside coaching working as a television pundit before answering a call from struggling champions Rosenborg BK in August 2005. Høgmo endured four league defeats in his opening matches, but steadied the ship after a fine UEFA Champions League win at Olympiacos CFP.

Steve Bennett has risen up UEFA's refereeing rankings courtesy of some excellent performances at domestic and European levels.

The 44-year-old, who is based in the town of Orpington in Kent, south-east of London, began refereeing in 1984, and moved through the various levels to become an English FA Premiership referee in 1999. He was awarded his FIFA badge in 2001.

Bennett took charge of two UEFA Champions League matches and three UEFA Cup games in the 2003/04 campaign, before making three and two appearances respectively in the two major club competitions last season.

Ever keen to progress, he took charge of FC Barcelona's opening UEFA Champions League game of the season (a 4-1 defeat of Udinese Calcio) and recently joined compatriots Mike Riley and Graham Poll in the UEFA élite class.

Lyon made to work for victory(Sunday, 16 October 2005)

Domestic news

UEFA Champions League Group F leaders Olympique Lyonnais fought off a strong challenge from AC Ajaccio to move seven points clear at the top of Ligue 1, while Real Madrid CF won comfortably against ten-man Club Atlético de Madrid. Olympiacos CFP were the only team in the section to lose, going down at home to PAOK FC, while Rosenborg BK put four goals past SK Brann.

Olympique Lyonnais 3-2 AC Ajaccio

Lyon maintained their unbeaten record with a 3-2 win against AC Ajaccio at the Stade Gerland on Sunday to stay at the top of Ligue 1. Brazilian forward Fred converted on 29 minutes after Sylvain Wiltord's cross was deflected into his path. Five minutes later Kaba Diawara equalised from the penalty spot, but four minutes into the second half, Juninho Pernambucano's strike restored Lyon's advantage.

This time, it only took three minutes for the Corsican club to find an equaliser. Grégory Coupet failed to successfully punch a free-kick clear and Lyon midfielder Tiago headed into his own net. Lyon responded admirably, and Sylvain Wiltord linked with Karim Benzema to score the winner on 68 minutes. John Carew and Mahamadou Diarra were suspended for today's game, but it was a big night for left-back Eric Abidal as he returned after a long-term knee injury.

The only absence for Lyon ahead of the Olympiacos game is striker Pierre-Alain Frau, who has a leg injury. Florent Malouda was rested along with full-back Jérémy Berthod and Senegalese defender Lamine Diatta. Lyon coach Gérard Houllier said: "Those tough wins are the most valuable. I enjoyed the players self-sacrifice and motivation to take the victory. We finished stronger than them."

Club Atlético de Madrid 0-3 Real Madrid CF

Madrid hit the top of the Primera División on Saturday with a 3-0 success against city rivals Atlético at the Vicente Calderón stadium. Atlético defender Antonio López was sent off after just seven minutes having fouled Raúl González, and Ronaldo converted the resulting penalty to open the scoring.

Guti was brought on in the second half for Zinedine Zidane, whose international commitments with France last week may have taken their toll, and he released Ronaldo after 61 minutes whose clinical finish found the bottom corner. Atlético defender Luis Perea scored an own goal in the dying seconds of the game after a fine move involving David Beckham, Robinho and Ronaldo.

Ronaldo was then carried off with a sprained ankle and may miss Wednesday's meeting with Rosenborg, while right-back Míchel Salgado was forced off in the first half having pulled a muscle in his left thigh and may also be sidelined. Madrid coach Vanderlei Luxemburgo was positive afterwards, however, saying: "For me this victory was important because when you lose players due to international commitments, there are

always problems. I felt my players were focused and achieved a great win which we thoroughly deserved."

Olympiacos CFP 1-2 PAOK FC

Olympiacos lost their 100 per cent record as they suffered their first league defeat of the season in a 2-1 defeat by injury-stricken PAOK FC at the empty Georgios Karaiskakis stadium. Olympiacos are playing behind closed doors after crowd trouble in last season's Greek Cup final against FC Aris Thessaloniki.

PAOK made their intentions clear in the third minute when Polish striker Marcin Mieczel hit the crossbar. Olympiacos took the lead against the run of play on 59 minutes thanks to a free-kick by Yaya Touré. Six minutes later, PAOK levelled through Pantelis Konstantinidis, after a pass by Egyptian substitute Sikabala. With 20 minutes left, the same combination produced the PAOK winner; Sikabala provided the assist and Konstantinidis finished from close range to beat Antonios Nikopolidis for the second time.

Olympiacos coach Trond Sollied was without the injured Ioannis Taralidis and rested central defender Georgios Anatolakis and defensive midfielder Ieroklis Stoltidis. Sollied said: "We could not train normally these past weeks due to the absence of several internationals and we also missed our fans, whose support is very important. I cannot offer excuses on why we did not score more goals."

Rosenborg BK 4-1 SK Brann

Four goals from set-pieces secured an emphatic win for Rosenborg and eased their relegation fears. Thorstein Helstad scored from close range on 35 minutes and Per Ciljan Skjelbred doubled the lead one minute later from ten metres out. Martin Knudsen replied for Brann on 41 minutes, but there was no stopping the home side.

Frode Johnsen was first to react to an Øyvind Storflor free-kick on 49 minutes, and Johnsen completed the scoring by heading in on 69 minutes while there was also time for Vidar Riseth to miss a penalty. This was Rosenborg's third consecutive league win and Per-Mathias Høgmo's men are now three points above the relegation zone.

Høgmo said: "We have hit form just in time, and I am very satisfied with how we played today. We scored four goals from set-pieces, and set-pieces will be important against Real Madrid as well." His major doubts before midweek are goalkeeper Espen Johnsen (knee) and Ørjan Berg (ankle) and neither featured against Brann. Miika Koppinen and Robbie Russell, both plagued by knee injuries for most of the season, are back in full training, but have not forced their way into the team.

The week in UEFAUEFA information

• UEFA supports FARE Action Week As part of UEFA's concerted anti-racism campaign, European football's governing body is using this week's UEFA Champions League games to make a stand against racism. The campaign, which is part of the Action Week organised by the Football Against Racism in Europe (FARE) network, will take place at all 16 Matchday 3 games played on Tuesday and Wednesday, where Europe's biggest stars are supporting the message against racism.

Each team will be accompanied on to the pitch by children wearing 'Unite Against Racism' T-shirts, and tannoy announcements will be made before each match. For its Action Week, the FARE network is co-ordinating activities that will involve supporters groups, football clubs from 35 countries, national associations, community and migrant organisations, anti-discrimination initiatives and schools.

• Out-of-competition doping controls UEFA is undertaking out-of-competition doping controls for the first time in this season's UEFA Champions League. The move - whereby any player can be tested outside of the regular random post-match testing - is part of UEFA's reinforcement of its anti-doping activities.

These campaigns have seen an increase in the number of drug tests in its competitions, greater financial outlay in the sector, the creation of an anti-doping unit within the UEFA administration, as well as an expert anti-doping panel and an education programme aimed at the broad spectrum of the European football community.

• Opening action draws big crowds The UEFA Champions League remains a top-draw attraction, with some excellent attendances recorded on the opening two Matchdays. A total of 513,066 fans watched the action on Matchday 1, with many stadiums packed either to full, or almost full capacity. A sell-out at the Stade Gerland (40,309) watched Olympique Lyonnais defeat Real Madrid CF, while Werder Bremen's Weserstadion was 99 per cent full (37,001) for the visit of FC Barcelona.

Two capacity crowds were registered in Germany on Matchday 2 - at the Fussball Arena München (66,000) for the FC Bayern München-Club Brugge KV encounter, and at the Arena AufSchalke in Gelsenkirchen (53,993) for the match between FC Schalke 04 and AC Milan. Old Trafford was 99 per cent full (66,112) for Manchester United FC's match with SL Benfica. Swiss side FC Thun's first home game at the nearby Stade de Suisse in Berne brought a 30,783 crowd (98 per cent of capacity) for the visit of AC Sparta Praha. A total of 634,335 fans attended games on Matchday 2.

Competition summaryGeneral competition information

UEFA's most prestigious club competition was originally created as the European Champion Clubs' Cup for the 1955/56 season, before its revamping as the UEFA Champions League in 1992.

• Competition format: The UEFA Champions League is open to each national association's domestic champions, as well as clubs who finish just behind them in their respective domestic championship. The number of clubs that can be entered by an association and their entry point in the competition depends on the association’s position in UEFA's coefficient ranking list. The current format was introduced in 2003/04. After three qualifying rounds, 32 teams contest the group stage, divided into eight groups of four. The group winners and runners-up advance to the knockout stage, the eight third-placed teams move into the UEFA Cup third round, and the eight fourth-placed teams are eliminated.

A draw determines who each of the 16 clubs will play in the first knockout stage, with ties decided over two matches on a home and away basis. The club that scores the greater aggregate of goals advances, or in the event of both teams scoring the same number of goals, the team which scores more away goals. If the away-goals rule proves inconclusive, extra time of two periods of 15 minutes is played after the second match. Away goals count double in that period, with penalty kicks coming into play if needed. The same rules apply to subsequent rounds with a one-off final match deciding the winners.

• Key dates: The draw for the first knockout round will take place in Nyon on 16 December with matches being played on 21/22 February and 7/8 March. The draws for the quarter-finals (to be played on 28/29 March and 4/5 April), semi-finals (18/19 & 25/26 April) and final are scheduled for 17 March 2006. This season’s showpiece will be played at the Stade de France, Paris on Wednesday 17 May 2006.

• Financial information: UEFA has estimated that the gross budgeted income for the 2005/06 UEFA Champions League will be €598m - higher than the revenue obtained last season. Based on those amounts, €453m would go to the 32 clubs, including €22.5m for the professional leagues of the participating associations, and €145m to UEFA for European football. Clubs in the group stage will receive a starting fee of €1.6m and a bonus of €321,000 per match.

Performance bonuses will involve €321,000 for a win and €161,000 for a draw in the group stage. The 16 teams playing in the first knockout round will receive €1.6m each, the eight quarter-finalists €1.9m each and the four semi-finalists €2.6m. The Champions League winners will receive €6.4m, and the runners-up €3.9m. This means that a total minimum amount of €3.5m per club is guaranteed for the group stage. A club could receive, at best, up to €18m, not counting the TV market pool share and gate receipts.

• Record holders/new faces: Real Madrid CF are the most successful side in the history of the competition with nine triumphs (three coming in the new era) followed by

FC Bayern München and AFC Ajax have each lifted the famous trophy on four occasions, while, in contrast, FC Artmedia, FC Thun, Real Betis Balompié, Udinese Calcio and Villarreal CF are all competing in the group stage for the first time this season.
