CHANGE OUR LIVES The letters of Paul to the Thessalonians are among his earliest writings, and are driven by his belief and the belief of the entire early Christian community that the return of Christ was imminent, and that devoting time or attention to anything else was foolish. As time progressed, this fervor subsided a bit. Today we may wonder, when we hear these readings about the coming end-times, if we should take them to heart, if we really believe that Christ still may come upon us as a “thief at night” ( 1 Thes-salonians 5:2). Does this mean that we are to stop our long-range goal-setting, get rid of our yearly calendars and planners, or stop putting money in the college education fund? Of course not. What it does mean is that we need to change our lives, living like children of the light and illuminating the world around us with the light of the gospel. Then, on that day, when the details of our daily living become unimportant, we will be ready to find our peace and security in Christ Jesus. CAMBIA NUESTRAS VIDAS Las cartas de Pablo a los tesalonicenses están entre sus primeros escritos movidos por su creencia, y la creencia de la comunidad de la Iglesia joven, de que el retorno de Cristo era inminente, y que dedicar tiempo y atención a otras cosas era tontería. Con el paso del tiempo este fervor disminuyó un poco. The meaning of this is clear. The man in the parable represents Jesus, we are the servants, and the talents are the inheritance that the Lord entrusts to us. What is the inheritance? His Word, the Eucharist, faith in the Heavenly Father, his forgiveness..., in other words, so many things, his most precious treasures. This is the inheritance that He entrusts to us, not only to safeguard, but to make fruitful! While in common usage the term “talent” indicates a pronounced individual quality, for example talent in music, in sport, and so on, in the parable, talent represent the riches of the Lord, which He entrusts to us so that we make them bear fruit. The hole dug into the soil by the “wicked and slothful servant” (v. 26) points to the fear of risk which blocks creativity and the fruitfulness of love, because the fear of the risks of love stop us. Jesus does not ask us to store his grace in a safe! Jesus does not ask us for this, but He wants us to use it to benefit others. All the goods that we have received are to give to others, and thus they increase, as if He were to tell us: “Here is my mercy, my tenderness, my forgiveness: take them and make ample use of them”. And what have we done with them? Whom have we “infected” with our faith? How many people have we encouraged with our hope? How much love have we shared with our neighbor? These are questions that will do us good to ask ourselves. Any environment, even the furthest and most impractical, can become a place where our talents can bear fruit. There are no situations or places precluded from the Christian presence and witness. The witness which Jesus asks of us is not closed, but is open, it is in our hands. This parable urges us not to conceal our faith and our belonging to Christ, not to bury the Word of the Gospel, but to let it circulate in our life, in our relationships, in concrete situations, as a strength which galvanizes, which purifies, which renews. Similarly, the forgiveness, which the Lord grants us particularly in the Sacrament of Reconciliation: let us not keep it closed within ourselves, but let us allow it to emit its power, which brings down the walls that our egoism has raised, which enables us to take the first step in strained relationships, to resume the dialogue where there is no longer communication.... And so forth. Allow these talents, these gifts, these presents that the Lord has given us, to be, to grow, to bear fruit for others, with our witness. I think it would be a fine gesture for each of you to pick up the Gospel at home today, the Gospel of St Matthew, Chapter 25, verses 14 to 30, Matthew 25:14-30, and read this, and meditate a bit: “The talents, the treasures, all that God has given me, all things spiritual, all goodness, the Word of God, how do I make this grow in others? Or do I merely store it in a safe?”. Moreover, the Lord does not give the same things to everyone in the same way: He knows us personally and entrusts us with what is right for us; but in everyone, in all, there is something equal: the same, immense trust. God trusts us, God has hope in us! And this is the same for everyone. Let us not disappoint Him! Let us not be misled by fear, but let us reciprocate trust with trust! The Virgin Mary embodied this attitude in the fullest and most beautiful way. She received and welcomed the most sublime gift, Jesus himself, and in turn she offered Him to mankind with a generous heart. Let us ask Her to help us to be “good and faithful servants” in order to participate “in the joy of our Lord”.

Es claro el significado de esto. El hombre de la parábola representa a Jesús, los siervos somos nosotros y los talentos son el patrimonio que el Señor nos confía. ¿Cuál es el patrimonio? Su Palabra, la Eucaristía, la fe en el Padre celestial, su perdón... en definitiva, muchas cosas, sus bienes más preciosos. Este es el patrimonio que Él nos confía. No sólo para custodiar, sino para fructificar. Mientras que en el uso común el término «talento» indica una destacada cualidad individual —por ejemplo el talento en la música, en el deporte, etc.—, en la parábola los talentos representan los bienes del Señor, que Él nos confía para que los hagamos fructificar. El hoyo cavado en la tierra por el «siervo negligente y holgazán» (v. 26) indica el miedo a arriesgar que bloquea la creatividad y la fecundidad del amor. Porque el miedo a los riesgos del amor nos bloquea. Jesús no nos pide que conservemos su gracia en una caja fuerte. Jesús no nos pide esto, sino más bien quiere que la usemos en beneficio de los demás. Todos los bienes que hemos recibido son para darlos a los demás, y así crecen. Es como si nos dijera: «Aquí tienes mi misericordia, mi ternura, mi perdón: tómalos y haz amplio uso de ello». Y nosotros, ¿qué hemos hecho con ello? ¿A quién hemos «contagiado» con nuestra fe? ¿A cuántas personas hemos alentado con nuestra esperanza? ¿Cuánto amor hemos compartido con nuestro prójimo? Son preguntas que nos hará bien plantearnos. Cualquier ambiente, incluso el más lejano e inaccesible, puede convertirse en lugar donde fructifiquen los talentos. No existen situaciones o sitios que sean obstáculo para la presencia y el testimonio cristiano. El testimonio que Jesús nos pide no es cerrado, es abierto, depende de nosotros. Esta parábola nos alienta a no esconder nuestra fe y nuestra pertenencia a Cristo, a no sepultar la Palabra del Evangelio, sino a hacerla circular en nuestra vida, en las relaciones, en las situaciones concretas, como fuerza que pone en crisis, que purifica y renueva. Así también el perdón que el Señor nos da especialmente en el sacramento de la Reconciliación: no lo tengamos cerrado en nosotros mismos, sino dejemos que irradie su fuerza, que haga caer los muros que levantó nuestro egoísmo, que nos haga dar el primer paso en las relaciones bloqueadas, retomar el diálogo donde ya no hay comunicación... Y así sucesivamente. Hacer que estos talentos, estos regalos, estos dones que el Señor nos dio, sean para los demás, crezcan, produzcan fruto, con nuestro testimonio. Creo que hoy sería un hermoso gesto que cada uno de vosotros tomara el Evangelio en casa, el Evangelio de san Mateo, capítulo 25, versículos del 14 al 30, Mateo 25, 14-30, y leyera esto, y meditara un poco: «Los talentos, las riquezas, todo lo que Dios me ha dado de espiritual, de bondad, la Palabra de Dios, ¿cómo hago para que crezcan en los demás? ¿O sólo los cuido en la caja fuerte?». Además, el Señor no da a todos las mismas cosas y de la misma forma: nos conoce personal-mente y nos confía lo que es justo para nosotros; pero en todos, en todos hay algo igual: la misma e inmensa confianza. Dios se fía de nosotros, Dios tie-ne esperanza en nosotros. Y esto es lo mismo para todos. No lo decepcionemos. No nos dejemos engañar por el miedo, sino devolvamos confianza con confianza. La Virgen María encarna esta actitud de la forma más hermosa y más plena. Ella recibió y acogió el don más sublime, Jesús en persona, y a su vez lo ofreció a la humanidad con corazón generoso. A ella le pedimos que nos ayude a ser «siervos buenos y fieles», para participar «en el gozo de nuestro Señor».

Keeping Christ in Christmas magnets will be available for purchase in the Narthex after Sunday Masses in December. The Knights of council #9903 recently sponsored a blood drive at St Michaels on October 4th, success-fully raising 20 pints of critically needed blood for Carter Blood Drive. Mark your calendar, the next blood drive will be Sunday, January 10th.
