Please pray for those in the Armed Forces:

The Presentation of the Lord . . . and you yourself a sword will pierce. (Luke 2:35) Did you know that this day has several celebrations associated with it, including one that involves a large rodent? In the Church, today is the feast of the Presentation, the feast of the Purification of Mary, and even Candlemas, since it’s the day that churches traditionally bless their candles. Since the Middle Ages, it has also been observed as Groundhog Day. First for Pagans and, later, Christians, February 2 held a special significance as representing the crossing of seasons: when people turned from the weariness of winter and rejoiced in the approaching spring. Over time, Christian folklore developed a theory that if an animal—hedgehog, or groundhog for instance saw its shadow on the feast of the Presentation, spring would be six more weeks away. German immigrants brought this tradition to North America, where the groundhog became the weather prognosticator. In a sense, today’s Gospel reading reveals a similar shift for Mary. Still the first days of motherhood, she hears Simeon prophesy that a sword will pierce her heart. At that moment, she crossed from the joy of new motherhood to a deeper awareness of the sacrifices that awaited her. “Lord, guide me as I turn from the manger to the cross. May this Lent be a time of renewal.”

To Trust Again . . . ministry sponsored by the Diocese of Orange This is a peer ministry, sponsored by the Diocese, facilitated by Deanery 2, open to the Diocese as a whole. Our focus is on re-marrying Catholics where either one, or both have been married before and are now contemplating marriage in the Church. There are five couples in the ministry, of whom each has been either divorced and annulled, or wid-owed. They bring their experiences with a structured program syllabus that addresses specific issues only faced by people entering into marriage for the second or even third time. Topics include: remarriage itself, communication, blending families, intimacy, finances, elderly parents and finally trusting in God. Next session is April 20th and April 27th. For more information please call (714) 639-2900, ext. 239

St. Blaise—Blessing of the Throats  Saint Blaise was a doctor as well as a bishop in Armenia during the fourth  century.  It is believed that Blaise once healed a boy who was choking on a  fish bone.  Because of that, he is the patron of the sick, especially people with illnesses of the throat.  It is an ancient custom to pray for the good health with a blessing of throats on his feast day.  A priest or deacon touches the throat of each person with candles that were blessed on February 2, the feast of the Presenta on of the Lord, and makes the sign of the cross during the blessing prayer.  BLESSING  Through the intercession of Saint Blaise, bishop and martyr, may God deliver you from every disease of the throat and from every other illness:  In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

Saint Catherine held its annual Spelling Bee on January 28th. Thir-ty spellers took part in this year’s competition, working their way through numerous rounds before Juiliane Zanides, a sixth grade stu-dent was named one of the 2014 Spelling Bee winners. Juiliane suc-cessfully spelled the word “celestial” to win the middle school competition. Catalina Barnes cor-rectly spelled the word “orchestra” to win the primary school competi-tion. The students credit their excellent spelling skills on begin avid readers. Congratulations and special thanks to the students who took part in our 2014 Spelling Bee and for their hard work and commitment to learning so many challenging words.

Lecturas

—Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
