May 10, 2015 Dear Friends,

The crux of Jesus’ message, and the essence of our life in Christ is encapsulated in the word “love.” Love answers the question, “Why?”— the enigma of salvation, why a holy God would expend his love on such a people as us. Love captures both the goal and meaning behind our existence as believers; to live in the Father’s love. Love identifies the means by which the Gospel is advanced. For it is not through our flashy gimmicks that hearts are won, but rather by the proof that they are loved as God’s love is expressed through our lives. Love is a cycle starting with the Father’s love, shown

forth by the Son’s love, until eventually through the enlightenment of the Holy Spirit, we realize we are loved. Then in love, empowered by the Holy Spirit, we carry the love of the Father and the Son to others, beginning the cycle again. Jesus makes three statements in this week’s Gospel reading that help redefine and clear up our murky concept of love. First and foremost love is self-sacrificing; “…love one another as I have loved you. Greater love has no man than this, that he lay down his life for his friend.” The way Jesus loved us was by living and giving his life to bring about our well being, our salvation, our awareness that God loves us. If we are to love as he loved us, we must love others at our own expense. Second, the way to love sacrificially, is to do so in keeping with the will and direction of Jesus; “If you keep my commandments you will abide in my love.” There are many difficult situations in life, times when we wonder which of our actions will really be the loving thing to do. Though commercialization has made trite the meaning of “What Would Jesus Do,” this phrase does in fact provide direction as to how we should love others. We simply must keep his Word, his will, and his nature in mind if we are to love others as Jesus would if he was here walking among us. And guess what, he is literally here, of course, as he lives in and through us. Third, the way to love is unconditionally. Jesus says, “You did not chose me, but I chose you.” Coupled with this is the second reading which says; “In this is love, not that we loved God but that he loved us.” In other words, Jesus did not find something in us that warranted his love, actually we were disdainful of his love. Yet Jesus took the initiative, sought us out, and demonstrated the Father’s love for us. Jesus’ kind of love seeks out the unlovable and ungrateful, expecting no payment in return. We are called to also love the unlovely, not so that they can fulfill some need we have but so that Christ’s love, shown through our words and actions, might meet some need they have. This kind of love becomes redemptive in the same manner as Jesus’ love is. As people experience unconditional love they are often drawn to its source, Christ in us, and respond back to him in love. This then becomes the fruit that abides forever.

“Only when you know yourself as unconditionally loved—that is, fully received—by God can you give gratuitously. Giving without wanting anything in return is trusting that all your needs will be provided for by the One who loves you unconditionally. It is trusting that you do not need to protect your own security but can give yourself completely to the service of others.” (Fr. Henri J.M. Nouwen) We thank Almighty God for our mothers and our grandmothers, and we ask Mary our Mother to watch over us and protect us with her Maternal love. God bless you, Father John Francis Murray, C.Ss.R.

Don’t give hatred time. Give time to time. This is useful for us when we have wicked thoughts about others, wicked feeling, when we have hostility, hatred, to not allow it to grow, to stop it, to give time to time. Time puts things in harmony, and makes us see things in the right light. But if you react in a moment of anger, it is certain you will be unjust. You will be unjust. And you will hurt yourself, too. Here’s some advice: time, time in the moment of temptation. The one who pauses gives God time. Homily Casa Santa Marta 17 April 2015

Our Lady of Fatima, May 13

Between May 13 and October 13, 1917, three P o r t u g u e s e c h i l d r e n received apparitions of Our Lady at Cova da Iria, near Fatima, a city 110 miles north of Lisbon. (See February 20 entry for Blesseds Jacinta and

Francisco Marto). Mary asked the children to pray the rosary for world peace, for the end of World War I, for sinners and for the conversion of Russia. The third visionary, Lucia dos Santos, became a Carmelite nun and died in 2005 at the age of 97. Mary gave the children three secrets. Since Francisco died in 1919 and Jacinta the following year, Lucia revealed the first secret in 1927, concerning devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. The second secret was a vision of hell. Pope John Paul II directed the Holy See's Secretary of State to reveal the third secret in 2000; it spoke of a "bishop in white" who was shot by a group of soldiers who fired bullets and arrows into him. Many people linked this to the assassination attempt against Saint John Paul II in St. Peter's Square on May 13, 1981. The feast of Our Lady of Fatima was approved by the local bishop in 1930; it was added to the Church's worldwide calendar in 2002.

Saint of the Week

God is love Scripture tells us that God is love (1 John 4:8) - and everything he does flows from his immense love for us. He loved us so much - far beyond what we could ever expect or deserve - that he was willing to pay any price to redeem us from our slavery to sin and death. That is why the Father sent us his beloved Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, who gave up his life as the atoning sacrifice for our sins. In this great exchange - the Father giving up his Son to death on the cross in order to give us abundant everlasting life and adopt us as his beloved sons and daughters in Christ (Romans 8:14-17). It is for this reason that we can take hold of a hope that does not fade and a joy that does not diminish becauseGod has poured his love into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us (Romans 5:5). God's love is not limited or subject to changing circumstances. It is an enduring love that has power to change and transform us to be like him - merciful, gracious, kind, forgiving, and steadfast in showing love not only for our friends, but for our enemies as well. God's love is boundless because he is the source of abundant life, perfect peace, and immeasurable joy for all who open their hearts to him. That is why Jesus came to give us abundant life through the gift and working of the Holy Spirit.

Scripture Reflection

Who are the CARTHUSIANS?

The Carthusians are a strictly contemplative order founded by St. Bruno (1032-1101). Essentially hermits, the Carthusian way of life combines Benedictine monasticism and eremitical (recluse) asceticism. The order also includes a number of monasteries of nuns who live a similar rule.

COME CELEBRATE OUR PARISH FEAST

SSSACREDACREDACRED HHHEARTEARTEART!!! Our parish is so important to all of us. Our lives revolve around our parish. Our babies are brought to the waters of the font to be made members of God’s holy family, the Church. To bring healing the church through the priest anoints our sick and suffering family members and loved ones.

The celebration of our parish feast is so important, because our parish is so important!

We are blessed with such a wonderful parish name, the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The Sacred Heart from which all love and mercy flows, this is our patron saint! We are trying to increase devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. We are celebrating our Parish Feast in a more solemn and festive manner. We have added the Sacred Heart Novena and other Sacred Heart prayers to our devotions on Friday afternoons. We now pray the Divine Mercy Chaplet on Friday afternoon at 4:00. This is a very moving devotion on the Passion of Jesus Christ and his infinite love that flows from His Sacred Heart to all.

Happy Birthday Father George! On Wednesday, April 22 a special celebration in honor of Fr. George’s birthday was held in The Gathering Place after Mass. Father George we wish you a birthday filled with God’s blessings. You are a wonderful example of God’s love at work. Thank you for teaching, guiding, inspiring and uplifting . . .and most of all, thank you for bringing us closer to Christ.

Small Church Communities Celebrate End of Season The St. Gerard Small Church Communities recently celebrated the end of the 2014-2015 season with a brunch at the Elks Club in Edgewater. A beautiful statue of St. Gerard was presented to Deacon Tom and Phyllis Murray from SCC on the occasion of Deacon Tom’s retirement from the Deaconate and to show appreciation and gratitude for all the time, caring, leadership and service they have given to the Catholic Community of St. Gerard over the years—especially for establishing St. Gerard’s Small Church Communities. Many beautiful tributes were spoken to Deacon Tom and Phyllis by members of our small groups whose lives they touched. Special thanks to Beth Burns for organizing what turned out to be a fun filled afternoon. And thank you, Deacon Tom and Phyllis for helping us to come closer to Christ, for your faithfulness to our community, and “washing our feet” all these years. You will be forever in our hearts.

and Honor Deacon Tom and Phyllis Murray
