“We build our business on Service”
It’s Hard to Stop a Trane. ™
In 1945, the Christian author C.S. Lewis (most
famous for his popular children's books, "The
Chronicles of Narnia") published a fascinating and
disturbing novel called, "The Great Divorce." It tells the
story of a middle class Englishman who has a dream.
In this dream, he travels first to Hell, which is depicted
as a boring, grey, and unpleasant suburb where the
neighbors are always gossiping.
Then he gets on a bus that drops him off on the
outskirts of Heaven, which is depicted as a beautiful
countryside with a gigantic, magnificent castle way off in
the distance. When he gets off the bus, he is met by a
guide, who explains the place and the meaning of the
journey. While they talk, they see many different
people, and the guide explains who they are.
At one point, they see a queen and her entourage.
The queen herself is ravishingly beautiful. Her face
glows, her movements are as graceful as a deer’s; her
smile is as bright as snowflakes in the sun. And she is
surrounded by a crowd of admirers, each one
overflowing with joy and health, dressed in finery and
filling the air with laughter and song.
The group is heading towards the distant castle.
The narrator thinks that she must have been a famous
prime minister or empress. But his guide explains that
on earth she was actually very poor, very poorly
educated, and quite plain-looking maid. She spent her
life scrubbing floors and washing dishes, serving
everyone around her, with never a moment to herself.
But through all those years, she stayed close to
God in prayer, and she always looked for ways to help
ease the sufferings of those around her. Like the tax
collector, she accepted her humble condition,
acknowledged her need for God, and trusted that in his
mercy he would take care of her. And he did.
She humbled herself, and, as Jesus promised, she
was therefore exalted.
Father Michael

BENEDICTINE ANNUAL APPEAL~
For nearly 150 years, the Saint Vincent Benedictines
have been doing God’s work in this world by responding
to the spiritual and educational needs of people at home
and in missionary fields abroad. We express our sincere
gratitude for your support of our community’s work in the
past, and now invite you to be partners with us for the
future. We ask you to be as generous as you
can in your response to our Benedictine Annual
Appeal. A special collection will be taken up at
all Masses this Saturday and Sunday.
TODAY IS WORLD MISSION SUNDAY~ We
celebrate this day by remembering our
baptismal call - to bring the Gospel to all! The
collection today for the Society for the
Propagation of the Faith ensures the work and
service of the Mission Church, as it supports
priests, religious and lay leaders who offer the Lord’s
mercy and concrete help to the most vulnerable
communities in the Pope’s Missions. Thank you for your
generosity

40 HOURS ~SACRED HEART ~ Sunday 11/10/19 thru Wednesday 11/13/19
The topics will be “Four Last Things” Death, Judgement, Hell and Heaven.
Exposition will begin after the 11:00 a.m. Mass on November 10th.
On Monday, the 11th, Exposition will begin after the 6:15 a.m. Mass, with Solemn Vespers at 7:00 p.m.
Tuesday, the 12th, Exposition after the 6:15 a.m. Mass, in the evening will be Mass and Vespers at 7:00 p.m.
Wednesday, the 13th Exposition after 6:15 a.m. Mass, evening will be Mass and Closing of 40 Hours.
Pick a time, any time to come and sit in the presence of Our Lord in quiet a prayer, thanksgiving, or just
to sit there in His presence. Join Father Michael each evening for his talks and to understand Death, Judgement,
Hell and Heaven which should be our goal when our time has ended.
DEATH~ God has preordained that when the angels fell from heaven they left gaps in
the hierarchy of grace, and so God created man so that man could be raised and take
the place of the angels who had fallen. That means that he has a specific place for each
person in Heaven. Death reminds us that we only have a certain amount of time to reach
that standard. Most people never reach the place God has set for them.
JUDGMENT~ The Church’s teaching on the final judgment gives us rich material
for reflection and helps us to see ourselves in relation to God who will judge us as
his creatures. The church teaches that there are in fact two final judgments. There’s
the particular judgment of the individual in which after death the individual stands
before God and God enacts a judgment. Then there’s a general judgment in which
everyone gathers at the end of the world where Christ levies a judgment. So each
person goes through the judgment again.
HELL~ Father Gabriel Amorth, who was the Vatican’s chief exorcist before his
death not too long ago said that Satan’s greatest triumph was convincing people
that he didn’t exist, even those within the church. Most dioceses now do not have
exorcists, even though they are supposed to. In France only 5 in 100 exorcists
actually believe in the devil. But if you don’t believe in hell you call Christ a liar
because it’s all over the Gospels. By taking a look at what the Church and the
Saints have taught and we look at the nature of man, suffering, and justice we
come to a great deal of knowledge about the nature of the sufferings in hell.
HEAVEN~ It has always been the teaching of the Church that only those who die
in a state of grace end up going to Heaven. Heaven is the dwelling place of God,
therefore all who enter there must be holy as He is Holy. Just like no unholy thing
can enter the Sanctuary of a Church lest a sacrilege occur, likewise no unholy
thing can enter the most holy presence of God. The souls, after they die, find out
how absolutely necessary it is to be pure while standing in God’s presence.
