SCOTT HAHN REFLECTS ON THE FEAST OF MARY, MOTHER OF GOD READINGS:

Numbers 6:22-27

Psalm 67:2-3,5-6,8

Galatians 4:4-7

Luke 2:16-21

Today we give thanks to Mary, the Mother of God. Her response to the angel, born of a humble heart, brought us life and salvation in the Child conceived in her womb. From before all ages, God had destined her for this decisive role in salvation history. She was to be the woman who in the fullness of time would bear God's only Son, as Paul tells us in today's Epistle.

In times past, God spoke to His chosen people, the Israelites, through prophets (see Hebrews 1:1-2), and imparted His blessings upon them through His priests, as we hear in today's First Reading. But now, He has sent His Son—to reveal His glory and His kingdom, to make His way of salvation known to all nations, as we sing in today's Psalm. In the Infant lying in the manger, God has shone His face upon us (see John 14:8-9). Jesus is made a child of Israel, an heir of God's covenant with Abraham, by His circumcision in today's Gospel (see Genesis 17:1-14). And we have been made adopted sons and daughters by Baptism, which is the circumcision of Christ, the true circumcision (see Colossians 2:11; Philippians 3:3). As children of God, Paul says today, we are heirs of the Father's blessings, which He promised to bestow on all peoples through the descendants of Abraham (see Genesis 12:3;22:18; Galatians 3:14). This is the blessing which Aaron imparted to Israel, the people descended from Abraham. And this blessing comes to us through Mary and the Child. This is the good news of great joy that the shepherds make known in Bethlehem today (see Luke 2:10). Like the shepherds, we too should make haste today to find Jesus with Mary and Joseph, and to glorify God for His blessings. And like Mary, we should keep His word and reflect upon it, letting it dwell richly in our hearts (see Colossians 3:16). © 2016 St. Paul Center for Biblical Theology.

WINTER STORM CANCELLATIONS

When there is inclement weather, there is concern for the safety of parishioners and visiting priests traveling to our parish and our ability to clear the parking lot and walkways to make them safe and free of snow/ice. When conditions are extreme and the Ipswich School system cancels classes, we will also follow this same decision and cancel celebrating daily Mass. In addition, when there are extreme conditions or roads are unsafe we will also post cancellations of parish events, religious education and weekend Masses on our website. In addition to this you are also able to check cancellations on Channel 7 (NBC), Channel 56(CW) and by logging onto www.whdh.com .

WHY THE SON CAME INTO OUR FLESH

About discerning our call or vocation, the first thing to say is that we all share in the greatest one. God “calls humankind to seek him, to know him, and to love him with all our strength.” This is God’s call to all, and it tells about God’s dream: an earth peopled with lovers—with those who let the Holy Spirit lead them to love God, love one another, and love themselves—passionately and well. How is humankind responding? Well, a look at history might be discouraging. Americans killed more Americans in our Civil War than foreign enemies killed in all other wars together. And look at international news now. You won’t find many nice stories. Look around and see how badly we have thwarted God’s dream. Humanity tends not to fol-low the Holy Spirit of love but instead leans into a spirit of darkness. Yet God remains faithful, patiently pursuing his project. This is why the Son came into our flesh: to call us back into God’s dream. Our faith tells us that this call somehow resonates in every human alive. This is what Jesus said: And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself (John 12:32). Everyone has to discern this great call; and that’s the first thing to say about discerning our vocation in life.

by Joseph A. Tetlow, SJ

Q&A by BROOKS GIBBS Dear Brooks, How can my parents and I get to know each other better? -----

Eat with them. Dinnertime is a great time to catch up on how everyone’s day went. If your family eats dinner together, make sure you are a part of that gathering. It may not seem important, but this is a perfect way to get to know what is going on in each other’s life. Ask your parents about their day. You wouldn’t believe how blessed your parents would be if you asked them how their day was! They ask you, but you should ask them in return. Show your parents that you care about the things they go through. Pray for them. Whether or not your parents are spiritual people, they would be blessed to know that you think and pray for their challenges at work and home. Ask them every week if you can pray for something specific. After you spend the week praying for them (and make sure you do spend time praying for them), see how things are coming along with that issue. This shows that you genuinely care. Avoid Isola-tion. When you get home don’t run off to your room and shut the door. This really bugs your parents. They want to have an open house. Cooping up in your dark cave does not send out a positive family vibe. Join the activities in the house. Even if you don’t like what your parent’s watch on TV, endure it so that you can spend time with them. Exodus 20:12 “Honor your father and mother. Then you will live a long, full life in the land the Lord your God is giving you.” ~Brooks Gibbs © 2007 Karides Lic. to St. George Publishing Email your questions to [email protected]
