Act of Spiritual Communion

"Jesus, we believe that you are present in the most Blessed Sacrament. We love You above all things and desire to receive You into our hearts, minds, souls and bodies. Many of our brothers and sisters cannot now receive You sacra-mentally because of illness, or violence in their homelands, or because there is no priest and Mass can be celebrated only rarely. Come spiritually into those hearts. We embrace You, already there, and unite ourselves to You and to our brothers and sisters. Never permit us to be separated from You or from them. Amen.”

A prayer for our journey as a parish

"God of the journey, as we travel on alert us to the things that matter and open our eyes to every sign of your presence. Give us a sense of direction, or at least a sense of purpose, a sense of wonder, a sense that, in everything, You are walking with us step by step, gently leading us to the heart of things."

Availability of Holy Communion

We recognize that many in our community do not feel safe in attending Mass. We encour-age using our livestream Mass (www.ladyofhopemaine.org). Unfortunately a livestream Mass does not enable a person to receive Communion. We invite those who are attending a Mass online or TV to come to St. Pius X Church at about 9:45 AM on Sunday mornings. Following the 9:00 AM Mass a priest will be available at the door of the church (approximately 9:45-10:00 AM) to distribute Communion. Follow social distanc-ing in any line and wear a mask, please.

Ministry to the Deaf and Hard of Hearing - Each Third Sunday of the month (on February 21st) Fr Kevin will offer the 9:00 AM Mass at St. Pius X that is spoken and also signed in American Sign Lan-guage. To attend this Mass in person you must reserve in advance. The Mass is also livestreamed.

Monthly Eucharistic Adoration ( March 05th ) Each first Friday of the month. 7:00 to 8:00 PM livestream from St. Pius X Church, Eucharistic Adoration. Led by Deacon John. Attendance is by livestream only at this time.

Winter Weather Cancellations - This year Our Lady of Hope Parish will be listing any weather-related cancellations on TV channel 6 and on the website - News Center Maine. You can also go by our "old way" - if Portland Schools are closed because of bad weather, our 9:00 AM Mass is cancelled to in-person attendance. If the internet is working, we do expect to livestream that 9:00 AM Mass but do not venture out to try to attend. Your safety, the ability of the City Crews to clean streets and our snow plowing people to clear our church yard make it important for you to stay home. If it is a "snow day" then the Parish Office will also be closed.

Thanks to our K of C members and families who prepared the Mac and Cheese Drive Through Dinner this week-end. And thanks to everyone who participated by ordering meals. These dinners are a good way to help the parish, enjoy some good food, and come together even if in small ways.

Congratulations to our schools

Bishop Deeley offered a video greeting during Catholic Schools Week (Feb 1-5). The video included a good number of great photos from St. Brigid School and Cheverus High School. We can all be proud of the great work and ministry hap-pening at both schools. Both schools are now actively working with families who are applying for next school year. We wish a good and relaxing February vacation this week to school staffs, students and families.

Our Lady of Hope Sebastian Rasle, SJ Prayer Circle February 2021 Prayer Intentions

We now start the third year of urging parishioners and friends to pray for our parish and other world needs and for one another through these prayer intentions and the idea of a Parish Prayer Circle. I hope that these intentions and the commitment to pray have been a source of grace and blessing to you and to our parish, school, and world. 1. For the spiritual health, vitality, and financial support of Our Lady of Hope Parish and St. Brigid School.

2. Pope Francis’ Prayer Intention for February - Violence Against Women. We pray for women who are victims of violence, that they may be protected by society and have their sufferings considered and heeded. 3. In this month of St. Valentine, we pray for healthy relationships in our lives, relationships built on honesty and trust and mutual respect. We pray that we be aware of people around us who are lonely and seek opportunities to reach out and offer some companionship.

Catholic Appeal

Thanks for some recent gifts to the Catholic Appeal 268 individuals or families have made a gift of pledge from our parish. 86% of Parish Goal Thank You

Pledge/gift envelopes are available at the door at St. Pius X Church.

Weekly Bulletins - Printed copies of the weekly bulletin are available at the entrance of St. Pius X Church. New copies are put out on Fridays. Some have asked why can't we have them at St. Joseph as well? The answer to that is there is no sheltered space at St. Joe's. Putting bulletins out there would mean they would be rained upon or apt to be blown around the yard. It is also much easier to park close to the door at Pius and retrieve your bulletin. We are trying to make getting the bulletin easier. You can stop by the Parish Office for a copy as well, if you like, Monday-Thursday 9 AM - 4 PM). Thanks. The bulletin is also availa-ble at our parish website www.ladyofhopemaine.org

Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day (Feb 14) is this Sunday. While there is some historical confusion about who St. Valentine really was, and even if there was more than one person by that name, many keep the tradition of celebrating love and relationships at this time. Beyond being a boost to florists and candy-makers and more, expressing our love and ap-preciation for those close to us is a worthy thing. Let us take a moment to pray for those who are special to us and to reach out to them if that is possible. Let us also pray for those whose lives are more difficult, who have not had good or healthy and loving relationships.

Mass Intentions - Arrangements for Mass Intentions (or the sanctuary candles) can be made at the Parish Office - by phone or email if at all possible. Mass Intentions are being scheduled for all the Masses being celebrated in the parish at this time.

The parish portion of the 50/50 "Pot of Gold" will go assist in feeding of the hungry - we'll donate to the Sacred Heart-St. Dominic Food Pantry.

In this time of increased need our parish seeks to reach out as we are able. The Parish Finance Council has approved giving the parish portion of the "Pot of Gold 50/50" to benefit the Sacred Heart-St. Dominic Food Pantry.

St. Patrick’s Day (virtual) Party Monday March 15th 7:00 PM Our regular Monday evening Parish Zoom gathering will become a St. Patrick’s Day celebration on March 15th. Follow-ing upon our successful Virtual Christmas Party in December, we are calling on anyone who may have a story to tell, a song to sing or play, a poem to share to sign up to be part of our version of an Irish “seisun” or Scottish “ceilidh.” Every-body’s Irish on St. Patrick’s Day and all are welcome. To plan for this event, I need to know who our musicians and speakers may be and what you’d like to do, so let me know. For everyone else, reserve a space now and I’ll send on the zoom link/invitation when the date draws near. Bring your own beverage and keep the entertainment “family friendly.”

Go raibh míle maith agat! (This simple Irish blessing is used in its original Gaelic often in Ireland -one of the few expres-sions that almost everybody knows. It means 'Many thanks' (literally 'That you may have a thousand good things'))

To register for the St. Patrick’s Day Party call the parish office (207-797-7026) or register online ( REGISTER HERE) at https://ourladyofhopeportland.weshareonline.org/StPatricksDayvirtualParty03152021 Fr Paul SJ

Did you know? Practicing What We Preach. Faith-based organizations own 8% of the habitable land surface, 5% of all commercial forests, 50% of the schools in the world and 64% of schools in sub-Saharan Africa, 10% of world’s total financial institutions, and 14% of its community development corporations. There are 37 million churches in the world with 34,000 (Christian) denominations. The current number of mosques in the world is around 4 million. There are 20,000 synagogues and countless temples. Adapting these establishments to produce their own energy, reduce their carbon foot-print, and extend these benefits to neighboring communities will be a massive demonstration of practicing what we preach. (from Faith for Earth – a call to action by the United Nations environment program).

Abrahamic religions: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam agree that nature is God’s creation. God has made the universe and the order of the natural world, and has provided for all God’s creatures. These faiths press us to recognize that we are one small part of a complex, interdependent creation. And yet God has given humans a special responsibility to take care of and protect creation, as good stewards or guardians. All beings in creation have value in God’s eyes and should be treated with respect.

During this Lenten Season we will be looking at what we as families and as a parish can do to address the environmen-tal issues facing our world.

Coming to Mass… (February 15th)

Open Masses are listed on page 2. Pre-registration is required and you must wear a mask. Please plan to arrive at 10 minutes early to allow time to be checked in.

How to register for Weekend Masses Call the Parish Office (207-797-7026) Monday through Thursday 9:00 AM – 3:30 PM before the weekend you wish to come. You must speak to a member of the Parish Staff. Reservations cannot be made by leaving a message or sending an email. You must make a reservation for each week – no “standing reservations” can be taken. You will need to give your name and contact information and the number of people in your “party.” People living together can sit together. All others are two to a pew.

Can you be part of our Ministry of Welcome?

Thanks to parishioners who are now serving as Ministers of Welcome at each of our open Masses (greeters, ush-ers, cleaners). Your generous service makes it possible to welcome our parishioners to live Masses. 1. Those serving need to be willing to be scheduled for a Mass on a continuing basis. We can expect that these condi-tions will be with us for months yet 2. Please contact the Parish Office to become part of this important Ministry Thanks to everyone for your patience and understanding and good will!!

Rice Bowl

For many years Catholic Relief Service’s Rice Bowl program has been part of Lent for parish families. The idea is that you set aside a bit of money that you might have spent on food or “extras” for your own family so that those who regu-larly do not have enough might be helped. 25% of the money collected remains local and is given to local agencies feeding the hungry. The remainder helps support programs run worldwide by Catholic Relief Services. We do have a supply of the traditional cardboard “rice bowls” there, but it is not essential to use one of these. Just set aside your offering in the best way for you. Traditionally we collect the offerings on Holy Thursday when the offering at that Mass is for the poor. You can also bring or send in your contribution anytime around Easter. Some bring bags of coins. Checks are also ok (payable to Our Lady of Hope, with a Rice Bowl note in the subject line). Over 159 million people in over 100 countries are assisted by CRS. CRS Rice Bowl shares stories of hope from CRS’ work around the world. These stories are examples of how your Lenten alms are helping communities find solutions to problems like hunger and mal-nutrition. Take a virtual journey with us to Madagascar, El Salvador and Timor-Leste! Don’t forget to try the meatless recipes each Friday during Lent.

Discernment in Making Lenten Plans By Vinita Hampton Wright

What will you do during Lent this year? Will you fast from certain food and drink? Build in more prayer than usual? Make more donations of money, time, or talent? Attend Mass more often? Use a special Lenten devotional book for your prayer time?

Although the basic activities of Lent stay constant in Church Tradition—prayer, fasting, and almsgiving—our lives move and our interior landscapes shift from one year to the next. God knows that we experience change and that the “best” Lenten practice for us one year may not be what our soul most needs another year. So, let’s do some discerning around this topic. How can we choose our activities or practices for this Lenten season? We can apply some Ignatian wisdom by asking questions such as the following.

What are my deep desires right now? Would Lent be a good season in which to pray those desires? Our truest desires are usually God’s desires speaking in us. But true desires can become hidden under layers of false desires or superficial wants. Lent can give us the opportunity to focus on desires and talk with God about them, to learn where our deep de-sire meets God’s purposes for our life and the world.

In what area of my life am I experiencing a lack of spiritual freedom? Where am I clinging to something or trying to force an outcome? In what area has fear or pride or simple ego compelled my thoughts, words, and actions? Dealing forthrightly with unfreedom can be quite an effective form of penance, because we are admitting where we have gone off course, we spend time in prayer identifying why we are not free, and we seek to renew our trust in God and thus loosen our grip on a specific area of life.

How am I participating in God’s kingdom? How am I working with Christ, following the direction of the Holy Spirit, and helping fulfill the Creator’s dream for this world? Lent can be the perfect time to “praydream,” as Jesuit Mark E. Thibodeaux puts it. Daydream prayerfully about how your circumstances, opportunities, interests, and gifts can better contribute to God’s kingdom on earth. www.ignatianspirituality.com

08 Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time

The Season of Lent

In Church practice, the six weeks of Lent are a special and intense time of preparation for those who will be brought into the Church, the Body of Christ, at Easter. The “sacraments of initiation” Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist, are celebrated with them at Easter or during the Easter Season. For the rest of us, this time is meant to be a kind of “retreat in daily life.” Through prayer, charitable acts (giving of ourselves in addition to some share of our financial resources) and sacrifices in our lives, we seek the grace to direct our lives toward God and live more and more in union with the Holy Spirit. This year covid rules mean some changes in our practices, but we can come together carefully, in limited numbers, which is more than we could do last year at this time

Please look over these parish/school offerings as ways to feed your Catholic, Christian life, to deepen your experience of God, and also to strengthen your ties to your brothers and sisters in faith in this community. God never calls us all by ourselves. We are social beings by God’s gift. Our God is a Good of relationships and God wishes to bless us in our relationships. We journey toward God together.

Our season begins with Ash Wednesday. The Ashes are a physical sign of our desire to change (“repent” means changing direction). Mass on Ash Wednesday is Wednesday February 17th at 9:00 AM and 4:30 PM at St. Pius X. You must call ahead to reserve a seat (as we do on Sundays). Ashes will also be available with a short prayer (no Mass) at 9:00 AM, Noon, and 4:30 PM at St. Joseph Church (ramp entrance) and Noon at St. Pius X Church entryway.

Would you like to pray the daily Scriptures for Lent together with other parishioners? Join Fr. Vince Curtin S.J. and Our Lady of Hope parishioners in personally praying for fifteen minutes or more over the Lenten Scriptures for Mass using the website www.sacredspace.ie to guide us each day, starting on Ash Wednesday, February 17th. For materials use the web site or you may order “The Sacred Space for Lent 2021” booklet which costs $4.00 from Fr. Vince at 358-7577 or by emailing him at [email protected]. A Kindle version of the booklet also is available at Amazon.com for $3.00. Each week we are invited to share our feelings and insights about these readings on “Zoom” meetings mod-erated by Fr. Vince starting Wednesday February 24th at 7:00 PM and going to Wednesday of Holy Week at 7:00 PM on March 31th. Sign up for an invitation to these parish “Zoom” meetings at [email protected]. Call Fr. Vince for more information.

A pathway to Lent…..you are invited to join in a zoom conversation on Wednesday February 24th (7:00 PM) moderated by Fr. Paul, S.J. about “who Jesus is for you?” How have/do you experience him? Contact the parish office for the zoom link. (www.ladyofhopemaine.org) When you do that you will receive a Scripture passage or two to help you move into this conversation.

Often Catholics like to attend a daily Mass during Lent. In addition to our regular 9:00 AM daily Mass (live-stream and in person) and Saturday 8:00 AM (livestream) we are adding a Thursday evening Mass at 7:00 PM at St. Pius X for Lent. This is open to attendance (no reservation needed) and livestreamed. Our parish priests will take turns celebrating this Mass. Starting Thursday Feb 18th through Thursday March 25th.

Stations of the Cross will be prayed on Friday evenings during Lent at 6:00 PM at St. Pius X. This prayer is available by livestream only. It will be led by Deacon John McAuliffe assisted by Bill Welch.

March 5th Friday Holy Hour. Our monthly, first Friday evening Holy Hour, including prayer before the Eucharist, will occur at 7:00 PM, following the Stations. This prayer is available by livestream only. Led by Deacon John and Bill Welch. (Continued on Page 9)

Our Lady of Hope Parish 09

The Novena of Grace March 4 -12. This 9-day period of prayer leads up to the anniversary of the canoniza-tion of Francis Xavier, S.J. and Ignatius Loyola, S.J. It is dedicated to Xavier. Over the years people reported so many graces received through their prayers, it has become known as the “Novena of Grace.” This year we will observe the Novena at all parish Masses, beginning on Thursday March 4th. On Thursday March 4th and March 12th we will also celebrate a 7:00 PM Mass at St. Pius X as part of the Novena. Reflections at these Masses will focus on themes of the Ignatian spiritual vision. A special blessing will be given at the evening Mass on March 11th and the Friday morning Mass on March 12th. All Masses will be available livestream as well as open to in-person attendance. The Novena prayer will be in the bulletin (printed and online) for those who wish to make the novena at home or on their own. Be part of this blessed Jesuit tradition this year.

The weekly bulletin will carry reflections on the Sunday readings, prepared by Fr. Kevin, S.J.

Fr. Jack SJ and Deacon John are presenting a special program on the connections between the AA Twelve Steps and the Spiritual Exercises of Ignatius. There are two sessions, Tuesday March 2nd and 9th at 7:00 PM. The sessions are open to in-person attendance at St. Pius X and will also be livestreamed. All are welcome. Note these sessions are not AA meetings, but presentations aimed to understand the relationship between these two life-giving documents, to grow in our relationship with God, and to aid our ability to be helpful to those who are trying to free themselves of the disease of alcoholism.

Our parish Social Justice and Peace Ministry is inviting us to reflect on the need to care with wisdom and responsibility for the earth, our common home. This is the call of many scientists and religious leaders, in-cluding the world-wide Society of Jesus, and Pope Francis. There will be reflective material and suggestions for practical action in the bulletin each week during Lent, including an invitation to join in reading and dis-cussing People Francis’ document on these issues “Laudato Si’” Watch the bulletin in the weeks to come for more.

Lent is traditionally a time for seeking forgiveness, both from brothers and sisters we have hurt, and from God. During Lent we will offer the Sacrament of Reconciliation at our usual time: 2:30 - 3:00 PM Saturday at St. Pius X. We are using the sacristy. In addition, there will be a Reconciliation Service on March 24th at 7:00 PM at St. Pius X. Following that brief service of prayer led by Fr. Paul, S.J., three priests will be available for individual confession. Covid precautions will be followed.

Our regular Monday evening Parish Zoom Gathering continues. All are welcome to join for an hour of conversation and fellowship. 7:00 - 8:00 PM via zoom. Contact the Parish Office to get the link.

St. Patrick’s Day celebrations: Drive-through Lobster Roll Dinner Saturday March 13th Pick-up starting at 5:00 PM. Drawing for our St. Pat’s “Pot of Gold” 50/50 that day also. 50% to our winner. 50% to benefit the Sacred Heart-St. Dominic Food Pantry. Monday March 15th 7:00 PM an on…virtual St. Patrick’s Day celebration “seisiun” (or “ceilidh” for the Scottish). Details in the bulletin.

Lent officially ends the morning of Holy Thursday (April 1st). We will follow up with information on our Holy Week events at a later date. Watch the bulletin and parish website for any updates or additions.

Mardi Gras

This Tuesday (February 16th) is Mardi Gras (“Fat Tuesday”). Except for the folks in New Orleans and those who enjoy pancakes which, in my experience is a custom especially kept in the Episcopal Church, and perhaps, in other times, some restaurants, Mardi Gras is not a big thing for most of us. IT comes from the old custom of using up fats and oils before the penitential season of Lent when such foods were not consumed. Some say it also is connected to the use of any remaining eggs kept in storage. There was a time when chickens produced few if any eggs during the winter months. With the coming of spring, the eggs would soon come again. Whether by a change of diet or routine, there is something healthy and good in noting differences in days, times, and seasons. “a time to feast, a time to fast” rather than making every day essentially the same. So whether you have a feast of pancakes or other treats on Tuesday, it is healthy to make this change into a season that calls us to be more reflective, to pare things down to what is most essential.

I had some concerns, as I suspect most people entering senior living may have, regarding our social lives and whether we would develop friends here. Not only have my wife and I been able to maintain existing relationships but we have met several new people here… people we now consider to be our friends. The life enrichment program is designed to nurture interaction between people. The hostess in the Main Dining Room seats new guests with compatible table mates and within days, individuals become neighbors and friends. The floor we live on has become our new neighborhood. The people living here seem to understand that all of us have been new to The Park Danforth at some point. Everyone is so friendly here. My wife and I could not feel more at home.
