Welcoming new Catholics

Every parish has a part in Jesus’ ministry of welcoming people who want to follow Jesus and helping those already here to grow in their faith. This year we have three people who have asked us to help them in becoming members of the church. The best way for us to do that is through the ministry of RCIA (“Rite of Chris an Ini a on of Adults.”) RCIA is not a series of “classes” but a way for members of the church to mentor others into our community. To help them see what being a Catholic is about and introduce them to the life of our parish. Deacon John has been a great guide in this process.

Now – this year – we need the help of some of the parish to welcome and walk with those seeking to join us. You don’t have to be any kind of “expert”, in fact you will find your own faith and knowledge will benefit from this experience.

Pray about this need and opportunity. If you think you might be able to help or if you have ques ons, please let me know. Call or email me at the Parish Office.

And, if you are “seeking” but not yet a member of the Church, or a Catholic who has never received Eucharist or the Sacra-ment of Confirma on, RCIA is for you too. Let me know.

Thanks Fr. Paul SJ

Parish Zoom Gathering The Parish Zoom mee ng has now moved to Monday evenings 7:00 - 8:00 PM All are welcome. For several weeks now some of us have gathered for an informal parish zoom conversa on. It is informal with no agenda. The conversa ons have been very interes ng. If you want to join, let us now by sending an email to the Office with that request and your email address and I will send on an invita on and zoom link. Thanks Fr Paul SJ

RCIA ("Rite of Chris an Ini a on of Adults")

This year our ministry of welcoming people who want to follow Jesus and helping those already here to grow in their faith will take a slightly different form. This ministry is called RCIA ("Rite of Chris an Ini a on of Adults") and will be an invita-

on into conversa on and prayer with those seeking and with members of our parish community. A small core group of parish members are looking forward to hos ng this conversa on, sparked by the readings of each Sunday's liturgy. During the journey other members of the parish will be invited in join the conversa on and share their faith story, their ques ons and their experience of parish life and ministry.

The specific details of how this happens and when we start (soon) are now being worked out and will be shared shortly. Five young adults have expressed interest in making this journey as they seek to grow in faith. Please pray for them, for this ministry, and for our parish.

If you are "seeking" or are a member of the church but not yet received all the sacraments of ini a on (Eucharist and Con-firma on), please contact the parish office to see how you, too, can join this journey. Fr Paul SJ

The culture and spiritual vision of Na ve American peoples revere crea on as a source of blessing.

As part of the Lakota culture, when people pray or do anything sacred, they see the world as having Four Direc ons. From these Four Direc ons — west, north, east, south — come the four winds. The special meanings of each of the Four Direc-

ons are accompanied by specific colors, and the shape of the cross symbolizes all direc ons. Like many Na ve American beliefs and tradi ons, specific details regarding colors associated with direc ons varies.

East - All good things come from the East The freshening wind brings warm rain and sunshine. Each day guide us to see you in everything we do, everyone we meet. Be kind in your blessings, Lord.

South - The warming south winds bring new growth, gentle rain, healing sunshine. Bless us with enough food and the good things from the earth. As we eat nourishing food help us to know you as the giver of all good gi s, Lord.

West - The sun sets in the West giving us glorious colors in our life. Night can some mes be scary. The darkness can also mean calming, healing sleep. May good dreams and deep sleep cleanse us from all that is bad or evil. Renew and refresh us, O Lord.

North - North winds some mes bring stormy weather and snow. Let your warmth in our coldness wrap us as with a blanket of love to keep away all that hurts. May all our people have warm houses and full tables against winter’s chill, Lord.

November Elec on Vo ng

Cas ng a vote is a key responsibility of each of us as ci zens. This year because of covid, it is probably wise to plan to vote “absentee.” You will also be able to vote in-person at your City or Town Hall prior to Elec on Day. To vote absentee you need to request a ballot: by going to your City or Town Hall in person, by calling your City or Town Hall, by wri ng to the City or Town Clerk asking for a ballot, or by filing online through the Secretary of State. ( h ps://apps.web.maine.gov/cgi-bin/online/AbsenteeBallot/index.pl ) The Press Herald has described all the safeguards in place to guarantee no one votes more than once and to be sure it re-ally is you who are vo ng. You must be a registered Maine voter (you can s ll register now), you will need your legal name and your address, your phone number. If you request online, you need your email address. The Post Office states it is equipped to handle mailed-in ballots. It handles more mail than that each Christmas and Mother’s Day. However, it is best to request your ballot now. It will be sent to you in October. Return it by mail early to ensure delivery on me, just as you’d do Christmas mailing early. US Census - have you responded yet? The every-10-year US Census is happening now. If you have not yet responded please do. Many ques ons includ-ing federal funding for States are determined by these results. According to the US Cons tu on, "every inhabitant" of the country is to be counted. There is no re-quirement that you be a US ci zen, and it is illegal to eliminate any resident from the census count. You can respond online h ps://2020census.gov. or by phone 844-330-2020 (English language), 844-468-2020 (Spanish), 844-461-2020 (Vietnamese), 844-494-2020 (French), 844-474-2020 (Portuguese).

The Parish is You

At a recent Monday evening Parish Zoom mee ng we spoke about the parish being welcoming and reaching out. Several people made the point that “we are the parish” and so the ques on is “am I welcoming to others at Mass” “how do I invite people into parish life”? St. Paul would agree. He said we are all “ambassadors for Christ.” Have you invited anyone lately?

From September 23 through November 1, you are invited to join other volunteers for 40 Days for Life – 40 days of prayer and fas ng for an end to abor on. You are also invited to stand and peacefully pray during a 40-day vigil in the public right-of-way outside Planned Parenthood, 443

Congress Street in Portland and to help spread the word about this important community outreach. If you would like more informa on – and especially if you’d like to volunteer to help, please contact: Joanne or Claudia at (207) 613-5910 or

October - Our Lady of the Rosary

This Wednesday (Oct 7th) is the memorial of Our Lady of the Rosary

Saint Pius V established this feast in 1573. The purpose was to thank God for the victory of Chris ans over the Turks at Le-panto—a victory a ributed to the praying of the rosary. Clement XI extended the feast to the universal Church in 1716. The development of the rosary has a long history. First a prac ce developed of praying 150 Our Fathers in imita on of the 150 Psalms. Then there was a parallel prac ce of praying 150 Hail Mary's. Soon a mystery of Jesus’ life was a ached to each Hail Mary. Though Mary’s giving of the rosary to Saint Dominic is recognized as a legend, the development of this prayer form owes much to the followers of Saint Dominic. One of them, Alan de la Roche, was known as “the apostle of the rosary.” He founded the first Confraternity of the Rosary in the 15th century. In the 16th century, the rosary was developed to its present form—with the 15 mysteries: joyful, sorrowful and glorious. In 2002, Pope John Paul II added five Mysteries of Light to this devo on.

The purpose of the rosary is to help us meditate on the great mysteries of our salva on. Pius XII called it a compendium of the gospel. The main focus is on Jesus—his birth, life, death, and resurrec on. The Our Fathers remind us that Jesus’ Father is the ini ator of salva on. The Hail Mary's remind us to join with Mary in contempla ng these mysteries. They also make us aware that Mary was and is in mately joined with her Son in all the mysteries of his earthly and heavenly existence. The Glory Bes remind us that the purpose of all life is the glory of the Trinity. The rosary appeals to many. It is simple. The con-stant repe on of words helps create an atmosphere in which to contemplate the mysteries of God. We sense that Jesus and Mary are with us in the joys and sorrows of life. We grow in hope that God will bring us to share in the glory of Jesus and Mary forever.

Thanks

Thanks to everyone, parishioners, friends and neighbors, who made last week's Drive Through Lobster Dinner a success. Coming together is difficult now, so these drive-throughs at least give us a chance to wave to each other, share in some good food and support the parish. As it is for many other organiza ons, this is a financially challenging year for our parish. Special thanks to the Knights of Councils 11257 and 101 and their families for the Lobster and Chicken Dinner we have had so far this season. What shall we serve next?? Sugges ons are being taken.

Can you be part of our Ministry of Welcome?

Thanks to parishioners who are now serving as Ministers of Welcome at each of our open Masses (greeters, ushers, cleaners). Your generous service makes it possible to welcome our parishioners to live Masses.

1. Those serving need to be willing to be scheduled for a Mass on a con nuing basis. We can expect that these condi ons will be with us for months yet

2. All those serving will have to a end a training session. See our website/Facebook page for a video ( h ps:// www.dropbox.com/s/tdi651oninbxg8w/STM%20Safety%20Protocols.mp4?dl=0 ) on what coming to church will look like.

How do we follow our Church’s call to par cipate in public life, form our conscience, and stand up for the dignity of each life and for the common good in the face of divisions? Are you being called to become a deacon? By January, 2021, the Diocese of Portland is planning to begin a year of discernment with men who feel called by God to undertake the ministry of the diaconate in the Church. Such men must be persons of faith, who profess what the Catholic Church teaches and par cipate fully in the Church's sacramen-tal life. They should have a history of service-oriented involvement in a parish and have demonstrated the ability to work collabora vely with a pastor and other parish leaders. They will have experienced the ini al signs of a poten al call from God to this life-long commitment to serve the Church with the diocesan bishop, his body of priests, and com-munity of deacons. If married, these men need to be recognized as having sound, stable marriages, lived generously with their wives and children.

Inquiries from men of the parish feeling drawn by God to begin this process of discernment should be directed to Dea-con Peter J. Bernier, Director of the Diaconate, at [email protected] or at 207-773-6471, ext. 7845, pri-or to November 1.

October 4th - Feast of St. Francis of Assisi

This Sunday is the Feast Day of St. Francis, though the prayers at Mass will be those of the 26th Sunday in Ordinary Time. Francis is one of the most popular of Saints, and he is the inspirer of the large and varied Franciscan Community of priests, religious and lay associates. Francis has also become the patron of the ecological movement. He (like Igna us a er him) clearly saw the presence of God in all of crea on. He affirmed our connec on with the natural world - brother sun and sis-ter moon. As we bless animals, another tradi on of the day, and enjoy the autumn beauty of Maine, let us look at our frag-ile planet and take seriously the threat of climate change and what we can do. And we CAN DO something by our con-sump on prac ces, by how we use water and energy, and, very importantly by how we cast our vote.

Let these very serious words by Bruce Tallman, a London spiritual director, marriage prepara on specialist and religious educator of adults give us things to pray over and think about. This is excerpted from an ar cle published last month in "The London Free Press"

Immediate radical change needed to save planet

This is the fi h anniversary of Laudato Si, the 2015 landmark encyclical from Pope Francis. (Laudato Si is La n for “praise be,” a crea on hymn by St. Francis of Assisi). The encyclical should be mandatory reading for everyone as it theologically integrates love of others and love of nature. No one can escape the effects of climate change, especially the poor, but even the rich. Therefore, the biggest pro-life issue for Catholics, bigger than abor on, must be climate change, since it threatens the whole planet.

According to the podcast How to Survive the End of the World, we are in the end- mes, but it is not the biblical version of it, not the armies of evil versus the armies of God, the Armageddon version. It is a slow burn. We’ve been in the end- mes at least since 1970, when my geography professor told the class something needed to be done about the world’s environ-mental health quickly or we would be in serious trouble. That was fi y years ago.

We are rapidly approaching 2030 when, according to scien sts, feedback loops may kick in. How do feedback loops work? Trees breath out the oxygen we breath in and they take in the carbon dioxide we breath out. They store carbon unless they burn up, which releases the carbon into the atmosphere. This causes the planet to warm, which increases the number of forest fires on the planet. The more forest fires, the more carbon released, the more the climate heats up causing more forest fires in an endless accelera ng and uncontrollable loop.

A recent New York Times bestseller, The Uninhabitable Earth: Life A er Warming by David Wallace-Wells, says the apoca-lypse is now. Climate change may be the cause of the current pandemic. The future, if we don’t act quickly is going to be full of even more plagues and fires, in other words, hellish. If we are afraid of never-ending pandemics, we need to get cli-mate change under control....

In the United States, some poli cians are calling for a “Green New Deal” which would do for the planet what Franklin Roo-sevelt’s New Deal did for the economy during the depression. It is only ten years ll 2030, which will go by quickly, so it is

me for radical change. Governments have poured billions of dollars into keeping the economy going during the pandemic, now they need to do the same to keep the planet afloat.

The following is a link to a video discussion of "Laudato Si" that occurred when the encyclical was published, five years ago. h ps://www.igna anspirituality.com/encyclical-takeaways/

I had some concerns, as I suspect most people entering

senior living may have, regarding our social lives and whether we

would develop friends here. Not only have my wife and I been able

to maintain existing relationships but we have met several new

people here… people we now consider to be our friends. The life

enrichment program is designed to nurture interaction between

people. The hostess in the Main Dining Room seats new guests

with compatible table mates and within days, individuals

become neighbors and friends. The floor we live on has

become our new neighborhood. The people living here

seem to understand that all of us have been new

to The Park Danforth at some point. Everyone is

so friendly here. My wife and I could not feel

more at home.
