Abstract The Business and Financial series (68 linear feet) are business records that range
from payroll, paid bills, general ledgers, insurance, banking transactions, residuals and other financial documents. There are two sub-series beginning with the Personal sub-series, and ending with the Accounting and General Business sub-series both organized chronologically. The documents range in date from 1969-2007.
The Legal series (7.5 linear feet) are legal documents with the majority of documents originating from three law firms, Lane & Mittendorf, and Mitchell, Silberberg & Knupp, and Frankfort, Garbus, Klein & Selz all of which represented Robert Altman personally and professionally from 1969-2005. The series largely consists of business and financial documents. The series includes personal, business and financial, real estate and expandable file folders from Jerome Walsh's law office. The majority of files were created by Robert Altman's lawyer Jerome Walsh.
The Chronological series (30 linear feet) includes daily logs and correspondence for many of Robert Altman's production companies. Materials consist of daily logs, desk calendars, daily planners and correspondence consisting of incoming and outgoing faxes created during production of several of his films.
Scope and Content Note
The Business and Financial series (68 linear feet) are business records that range from payroll, paid bills, general ledgers, insurance, banking transactions, residuals and other financial documents. There are two sub-series beginning with the Personal sub-series, and ending with the Accounting and General Business sub-series both organized chronologically. The documents range in date from 1969-2007.
As Robert Altman often financed his own films, and received payments for them in both his corporate and personal banking accounts, his personal business records contain financial records pertaining to his various projects.
There are two sub-series Personal and Accounting and General Business and both are organized chronologically. The Personal sub-series includes documents that pertain to the maintenance of his New York and California homes as well as residuals and insurance information. The Accounting and General Business section reflects the various production companies Altman created to produce and finance his various film projects.
The majority of the material in the Legal series (7.5 linear feet) comes from three law firms that represented Robert Altman both personally and professionally, and that represented the various Altman corporate entities, including Lion’s Gate Films and Sandcastle 5. Those three firms are: Lane & Mittendorf, a New York, New York, firm that employed Jerome Walsh; Mitchell, Silberberg & Knupp, a Los Angeles, California, firm; and Frankfort, Garbus, Klein & Selz, a New York, New York firm that employed Richard Heller. There are other law firms and lawyers represented in the series including, the New York, New York firm of Colton, Weissberg, Hartnick, Yamin & Sheresky, who employed Ronald Feiner, and George Sheanshang, who dealt with entertainment contractual issues. Finally, a smaller amount of material comes directly from the offices of Sandcastle 5.
There are four sub-series which include personal, business and financial, real estate and expandable file folders. The personal sub-series includes documents such as visa applications, changes in Robert Altman's will and documents on renovations to his home. The business and financial sub-series includes lawsuits and settlements for many of Altman's production companies and financial documents such as banks statements and invoices. The real estate sub-series includes information about the lease, purchase and sale of Altman's personal properties in California and New York. The expandable files

sub-series are the original expandable file folders that many of the legal documents were stored in originally from Jerome Walsh's law office.
The bulk of the material from Lane & Mittendorf covers the period from approximately 1983 to approximately 2005. The majority of the files were created by Jerome Walsh, who joined Lane & Mittendorf in September, 1987. Prior to coming to Lane & Mittendorf, Mr. Walsh worked for at least two other firms, including Walsh & Frisch, and Walsh, Sullivan & Mercurio. The bulk of the material from Mitchell, Silberberg & Knupp covers the period from approximately 1971 to approximately 1986. Material from Frankfurt, Garbus, Klein and Selz (FGK&S) covers the period from approximately 1992 through 1993, with the majority of the material related to Prêt-a-Porter and Short Cuts.
Each law firm has its own particular numbering scheme for the files they produce. In the case of Lane & Mittendorf, file numbers are in the format 4261-XXX-X, or 204261-XXX-X, where 4261 is the client number for Robert Altman. Mitchell, Silberberg & Knupp file numbers are numbered 8314-XXX, where 8314 is the client number for Robert Altman. The file number format used by Frankfurt, Garbus, Klein & Selz is 4432-XXXX.
During processing of the Archive, legal materials were separated into two groups: one group dealing with specific productions, such as Nashville, Prêt-a-Porter and Short Cuts, and a second group dealing with non-production related matters, such as formation of production companies. The material relating to specific productions was placed with the other materials associated with those productions, while the non-production materials were incorporated into the Altman Archive Legal Series.
The Chronological series (30 linear feet) includes daily logs and correspondence for many of Robert Altman's production companies. Materials consist of daily logs, desk calendars, daily planners and correspondence consisting of incoming and outgoing faxes created during production of several of his films.
The daily logs, desk calendars and daily planners were regularly updated by Altman's assistants. Altman's main assistant, Wren Arthur, was in charge of planning his daily activities, but there were several assistants and some family members who worked as his assistant throughout his career. The logs, calendars and planners coordinate Robert Altman's daily activities but also include planning for general production activities.
The correspondence consists mainly of incoming and outgoing faxes ranging from legal, business and financial, production and post-production issues and articles and reviews.
