Abstracts The Multiple Project Notes subseries consists of materials that relate to multiple
unproduced and produced projects. The subseries consists of correspondence materials and legal correspondence in the form of short typed and hand written notes.
The 92 in the Shade subseries contains materials related to a project of the same name. The subseries consists of legal material related to a dispute with producer Elliott Kastner.
The Across the River and into the Trees subseries contains items relating to a script composed by Altman based on the Ernest Hemingway novel of the same name. In addition to a copy of the script, the materials include a bill for expenses for writer Robert Harders's services.
The Amos 'n' Andy subseries contains items related to a project based on the radio and television production of the same name to be produced with Harry Belafonte. The materials include research on the programs and minstrelsy. Also included are scripts by Robert O'Hara that may have been used as research as well.
The Angels in America subseries consists of materials related to a project based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning plays by Tony Kushner. It contains correspondence, agreements and budgets in addition to copies of the original play and drafts of the screenplay. The collection also includes a letter from Kushner to Altman requesting that Altman decide whether or not he will complete the project.
The Another City Not My Own subseries contains items related to a project that was to be based on the Dominick Dunne Novel of the same name. Materials include items used to track the projects expenses and correspondence including lists of possible writers to adapt the script.
The Before the War subseries contains materials related to a script of the same name written by Frank Barhydt. The subseries contains legal material from Jerome Walsh regarding Altman's purchase of the script.
Biarritz is a subseries that contains materials related to efforts to produce an original script written by Altman. The subseries also includes version of the script written by Mariella Magri. The series contains correspondence, legal material from Jerome Walsh, business and financial documents, several versions of the script, and research materials related to the potential production of the film.
The materials in the Blackface subseries are related to a preliminary shoot in Las Vegas for a film of the same name Altman was working on with Harry Belafonte. The series contains a single piece of correspondence, business and financial documents, and a small amount of production material including a list of the crew members involved in the shoot.
The Breakfast of Champions subseries contains materials related to a film project based on the novel of the same name by Kurt Vonnegut. The property was to be part of the three picture deal with Dino DeLaurentis along with Buffalo Bill and the Indians and Ragtime. Due to Buffalo Bill's performance at the box office, the rest of the deal fell apart. However, this project was resurrected in the 1990s by Alan Rudolph and eventually made into a film starring Bruce Willis (without Altman's involvement). The materials include agreements, budgets and scripts. The scripts include both the first draft from 1975 and later drafts from 1992 and 1994.
The Brown Sugar subseries contain materials related to a script by Roderick Spencer. Business and financial documents and scripts are included.
The CDC subseries contains materials related to a project proposed by Gary Trudeau. The business and financial subseries includes billing materials related to legal fees and other pre-production costs.
The A Confederacy of Dunces subseries consist of materials related to a project based on the novel of the same name by John Kennedy Toole. The subseries consists of correspondence regarding the status of the project.

The Chicken and the Hawk subseries contains scripts and research related to a television series originally proposed in 1965. It was reintroduced as a miniseries in 1990 with author Stephen Stark as screenwriter.
The "Cooking Project" subseries contain research materials and correspondence for this unproduced project.
The Corrections subseries contain materials related to a script by David Hare, based on the Jonathan Franzen novel. The subseries contain correspondence with Hare and copies of the script.
The Cube (alternately titled Sum Zero) subseries consists of materials related to a project of the same name. This subseries includes correspondence, business and financial documents, scripts and treatments, and materials related to the production status of the film.
The Dahl Project subseries consists of materials related to an untitled television miniseries based on short stories by Roald Dahl. Most of the materials are scripts and writing samples submitted while Sandcastle 5 was trying to choose a screen writer. There are a number of drafts and notes between Sandcastle and Peter Morris after he was hired. The subseries also contains extensive emails between Wren Arthur and lawyers in England.
The Death Where is Thy Sting-a-ling-ling? subseries contain photographs of World War I era planes. Possible research used for an Altman project based on a Roald Dahl script.
The Diviners subseries contain materials related to a screenplay by Jim Leonard based on his play of the same name. The materials consist of correspondence, legal agreements, and publicity related to the play. There are also several drafts of the script.
The Don Quixote subseries contain material from 1997-1998. The scripts include an original script by Waldo Salt with additional rewrites by Susan Shilliday and John Guar.
The An Easter Egg Hunt subseries are from a proposed feature-length film based on the novel by Gillian Freeman. Included in the legal materials are numerous documents detailing several attempts Altman made to get the film produced. The business and financial documents include budgets from 1984 and 1986. Additional materials include scripts authored by Altman and others co-written with his son, Steven. Correspondence in the script materials include notes by Altman and his son, encouraging the film into production, as well as Steven's suggested actors for each role. Also included is a proof of the dust jacket as well as reviews of the novel.
The Elite Steakhouse subseries contains materials related a scripted by Anne Rapp based on a short she wrote story of the same name. Legal materials, business and financial documents, and scripts are included in the subseries as is a small amount of production materials.
The Ever After subseries consists of legal materials related to a screenplay of the same name by Joan Tewksbury.
The The Feud subseries contain materials for a planned film based on Thomas Berger's novel of the same name. Jim Leoanard Jr. was hired to write the screenplay around the same time his play, The Diviners was also optioned by Altman.
The materials mostly consist of legal documents: the drafts of contracts and agreements with Berger and Leonard. There is some correspondence regarding the third draft of the script, as there was a dispute as to whether or not Leonard should have started revising. All three drafts of the script are included as well.
The Goes Around, Comes Around subseries contains materials related to a script written by Steve Ecclesine and Phil Mishkin. Alan Rudolph was involved in the project as a writer as well. The subseries contains legal materials, business and financial documents, scripts, and production materials.

The Great Gottschalk subseries contains materials related to a musical play about the American composer Louis Moreau Gottschalk. Gillian Freeman, Leonard Mogel, and Hugh Wheeler were all involved in the project as writers and Altman was to be producer, director, and co-writer on the show. Correspondence, legal materials, business and financial documents, scripts, and notes on the script and music are included as well as production materials and articles about the production.
The Guitar Pull subseries consist of materials related to a proposed series of television specials of the same name. The subseries contains legal materials as well as correspondence regarding the casting of the series and the creation of other materials for the series.
The Hands on a Hard Body was a film Robert Altman was developing before his death in 2006. Billy Bob Thornton and Hilary Swank were reported to star.
The legal series contains agreements for all three writers, the Cease and Desist letter from Hands on a Hard Body (HOHB) films, the certificate of incorporation for Flatbed films, and other various legal agreements pertaining to the production.
The business and financial materials include several budgets for the film, expenses incurred by the scout for filming locations in Austin, Texas during the film's pre-production, invoices for legal counsel, and other expenses.
The script was originally based on Beth Hanley's script and later rewritten by Anne Rapp, but Altman ultimately decided to use Steve Harrigan's script. Script drafts from all three writers –Steve Harrigan, Beth Henley, and Anne Rapp – are included in the scripts series. Also included are Steve Harrigan's notes on both the Henley and Rapp scripts, and feedback from several parties regarding Harrigan's first and second draft.
Included in production are outlines and treatments for Harrigan and Rapp's scripts, as well as a calendar of the plot events in Harrigan's script. There are also several printed headshots for actors Altman was considering for the picture.
The Heat subseries contain materials related to a film of the same name that Altman was to direct set in Las Vegas. The subseries contains correspondence, legal materials, business and financial documents, rough scenes from the script, and a list of the staff and crew involved in the production. Production was terminated because Altman's cinematographer, Pierre Mignot, was refused a work permit. Correspondence and other legal documents reflect the visa process.
The Hearts subseries contains materials related to a project of the same name. The subseries consists of correspondence materials.
The "High" subseries contains materials related to a project tentatively of that title. The subseries contains business and financial documents.
The Killer App subseries consist of legal, business and financial records, scripts, and production materials. The bulk of the legal documents are devoted to a compensation dispute between Sandcastle 5 and Kushner-Locke (KLTV). Also included in the materials are location, cast, musicians, and other agreements.
The production materials contain the bulk of the Killer App documents and include casting and crew publicity and promotional materials. Casting contains several folders of headshots as well as extensive notes on auditions and tape logs. Extensive research is included in the production materials, pertaining to Microsoft and Bill Gates, which served as the inspiration for the fictional company VorTech and its CEO Jann Hanson. Sample writings submitted from potential show-runners are included in the crew section. These include scripts written by Ann Lewis Hamilton, Remi Aubochon, and Kerry Lenhart & John Sakmar.
The "Leary" subseries contains materials related to a project tentatively of that title. The subseries contains business and financial documents.

The Libra subseries contains materials related to a proposed movie based on Don DeLillo's novel of the same name. The subseries contains correspondence as well as articles and reviews of DeLillo's work
The Light a Candle subseries consists of materials related to a project that was to be written and produced by Altman of the same name. The subseries contains script materials comprising of a short description of the plot as well as production status materials.
The Lone Star subseries consist of materials related to a project of the same name. The subseries contains legal materials.
The Long Shot subseries consist of materials related to a screenplay of the same name by Casey McCabe. The subseries contains business and financial materials and a script.
The Maiden subseries consists of materials related to a project of the same name. The subseries contains legal as well as business and financial materials.
The Marathon subseries consists of materials related to a six part television miniseries of the same name written by Joe Cacaci. The subseries contains legal materials, business and financial documents, and scripts.
The Mata Hari subseries consists of materials related to two projects portraying to the World War I dancer of the same name. The first version was in conjunction with RKO Pictures and includes legal documents, research, multiple treatments, and a script by David Williamson. The second version was to be a miniseries with HBO and includes legal documents, research, and multiple drafts of the script. Both versions have correspondence from author Russell Warren Howe related to the optioning of his biography of Hari and his role in the process of making either version.
The More Short Cuts subseries consists of materials related to a possible sequel to Short Cuts. The materials include Legal documents related to agreements with CIBY 2000 regarding financing and the lawsuit that ended its involvement. There are also several drafts of the script by both Frank Barhydt and Anne Rapp. There are also story cards used in plotting out the film.
The Mother's Day subseries consists of materials related to a script of the same name by Susan Emshwiller. The subseries contains business and financial documents, scripts, and production materials.
The Moderns subseries consists of materials related to a project of the same name. The subseries contains legal materials.
The Nashville Sequel subseries, also known as Nashville XII, Nashville XIII and finally, Nashville, Nashville, was to feature all of the actors from the original film. Of note is the cast list and contact information, which indicates most of the original actors had agreed to appear in the sequel, yet notations on the same cast list later reveal several had expressed concerns regarding the script.
The New York Arts and Entertainment subseries contains materials related to a proposed TV movie and series of the same name for the Arts and Entertainment (A&E) network. The project also goes by the name New York New York. This subseries contains legal materials, business and financial documents, script materials including treatments, plot outlines, and proposals, production materials, and articles and reviews.
The Not Guilty subseries contains materials related to a television series of the same name. The subseries contains script materials consisting of a project idea outline and production materials.
The Nun subseries consist of materials related to a TV series by Annie Archer. The subseries is made up of correspondence and production materials consisting of a list of possible writers for the show.
The North Dallas Forty subseries is made up of materials related to a project of the same name. The subseries onsists of legal materials including correspondence and a contract for the writer John Binder/

The Now You See It subseries consists of materials related to a project of the same name. The subseries contains legal materials including a directing agreement for Robert Atlman as well as legal materials from Jerome Walsh.
The Paint/Ultraviolet subseries contains materials related to a film set to star James Franco and Salma Hayek. The subseries contains correspondence, legal materials and numerous drafts of the script. There are also drafts of promotional materials possibly used to secure financing.
The Pal Joey subseries consists of materials related to an updated revival of the Rodgers and Hart musical of the same name. The subseries contains correspondence, scripts material including treatment and rough scenes, music and scores material consisting of song lyrics, production materials including writing samples from potential writers, and articles and reviews.
The Philco Blues subseries consists of materials related to a project of the same name. The subseries contains legal materials from Jerome Walsh.
The Perfume subseries consists of correspondence from Denise Breton, Altman's publicist in France, recommending him as the director for a film version of Patrick Suskind's novel of the same name.
The Ragtime series consists of materials from a project of the same name. The subseries contains legal materials relating to the employment of Joan Tewksbury as writer.
The Regard of Flight series consists of materials related to a film project of the same name based on a play by Bill Irwin. The subseries contains correspondence with Irwin, scripts, production materials, and articles and reviews some of which relate to the play.
The Renoir subseries consist of material related to a film project of the same name written by Nicholas Framgalos based on the book Renoir, My Father by Jean Renoir. The series contains correspondence including from Framgalos, Jean Renoir, and Isabella Rossellini as well as script material.
The Rosebud County subseries consists of materials related to a project of the same name. The project is also referred to as Montana and Big Sky Blues. The subseries consists of legal materials including a writers agreement with Larry McMurtry and legal materials from Jerome Walsh.
The Rossini! Rossini! subseries consists of materials related to a project of the same name that was to be filmed in Italy and produced by Enrico Roseo. Most of the materials are correspondence between Jerome Walsh and lawyers in Italy as they try to resolve the lawsuits surrounding Altman's replacement as director. There are also several versions of a script.
The Sex with Aliens subseries consists of materials related to a script of the same name written by Michael Altman and Phillip Gessert. The subseries includes, business and financial materials, a copy of the script, and production materials.
The So Much Water So Close to Home subseries consists of materials related to project of the same name. The subseries consists of legal materials, primarily those related to the rights to the work.
The Spoonful of Love subseries consists of materials believed to be related to a project of the same name. The subseries contains photographic materials circa 1966 from Seville, Spain.
The System subseries consists of materials related to a project of the same name. The subseries consists of script materials including a summary and notes on the script.
The Terror subseries consists of materials related to a project of the same name. The subseries includes script materials consisting on a proposal and partial script.
The Two Flames subseries consists of materials related to a project of the same name. The subseries contains business and financial materials.
The Two Lives subseries consist of materials related to a series of half hour shows produced for PBS by WTVS Detroit. The subseries includes correspondence, business

and financial documents, and script materials including a proposal for the show and drafts for two episodes.
The An Unfinished Life subseries consists of materials related to a project of the same name that possibly would have starred Paul Newman. The script was brought to Robert Altman by Paul Newman, and in the summer of 2002 Robert Altman worked with writers and Paul Newman to improve the script. The materials include scripts and production information as well as extensive budget research and drafts. The project had many financial concerns which the Business and Financial materials reflect. Eventually, Robert Altman decided not to do the project due to disagreements with Miramax in regards to casting. There are letters from Altman and Newman related to the end of the project.
The Voltage subseries consists of materials related to a project based on the book Shortage of Engineers by Robert Grossbach. In addition to business and financial materials, scripts, and correspondence, there is extensive information about possible locations, including photographs.
The White Mansions subseries consists of materials related to a project of the same name. The project was also known as Vicksburg. The subseries contains legal materials and copies of the script.
The Widow Claire subseries consists of materials related to a project based on the play by Horton Foote. They include correspondence from Foote, budgets, and photographs from two possible locations. There are also six drafts of the scripts. In addition, there are articles indicating that Winona Ryder and Jake Gyllenhaal were attached to the project.
The Wildcard subseries consists of materials related to a project based on the novel Diminished Capacity by Sherwood Kiraly. The project briefly had the same title as the novel. The materials include agreements related to Altman as director, projected budgets, casting and crew suggestions and two drafts of the script. There is also a large spreadsheet shooting schedule.
The Writers or Mr. Propter Changes Scenes subseries consists of materials related to a project of the same name. The subseries consists of script materials including copies of the script and a synopsis with comments.
The Zoo subseries consists of materials related to a project of the same name. The subseries consists of business and financial materials.
The Untitled Burnett, Carol subseries consists of materials related to a television series Altman was working on with comedian Carol Burnett. Proposed names for the project included Up to Here and Carol Burnett Up to Here. The subseries consists of legal materials, legal materials from Jerome Walsh, business and financial documents, and articles about the project.
The Untitled Corwin, Norman subseries consists of materials related to a project about the World War II radio correspondent. The subseries contains correspondence, script materials consisting of copies of short stories, and production materials consisting of research on Marguerite Kay.
The Untitled Freidman, Kinky subseries consist of materials related to a project about the satirist and musician Kinky Freidman. The subseries includes correspondence and production materials.
The Untitled Leary, Brianne subseries consist of materials related to a project about the reporter Brianne Leary's time in Afghanistan. The subseries includes correspondence, script materials, and articles about Leary.
The Untitled Shaw, Artie subseries consists of materials related to a project about the musician, bandleader, and writer Artie Shaw. The subseries contains correspondence, script materials, production materials, as well as articles and reviews of Shaw.

Scope and Content Note The unfinished and suspended projects series consists of materials related to
projects that Altman had an involvement with but were never produced. The reason that any specific project failed may or may not be apparent from the materials and vary greatly. Materials in this series run from the 1960's through the late 2000's.
The type and volume materials also vary greatly from project to project. These can include correspondence, legal materials, legal materials from Jerome Walsh, business and financial materials, scripts and related materials, production materials including those used for research, materials related to publicity and distribution, and articles and reviews related to both the productions and the subjects of the productions.
