materials from the 1971 film directed by Robert Altman. The series include scripts, publicity and distribution materials, photographs, slides, reviews, and scrapbooks.

The Buffalo Bill and the Indians, or Chief Sitting Bull's History Lesson (4 linear feet and 1 oversized box) series consists of materials from the 1976 film co-written and directed by Robert Altman. The series includes correspondence, legal documents, scripts, production material, publicity and distribution material, articles and reviews, photographs, contact sheets, negatives, slides, and a scrapbook.

The California Split series (2 linear feet and 2 oversized boxes) consists of material from the 1974 film co-produced and directed by Robert Altman. The series includes legal materials, scripts, publicity files of each actor and Altman, domestic reviews, publicity stills, on-the-set photographs, contact sheets and one scrapbook.

The Images series (approximately 1 linear foot and 1 oversized box) consists of materials from the 1972 film written and directed by Robert Altman. The series includes correspondence, legal materials, scripts, production documents, publicity and distribution, articles and reviews, publicity stills, on-the-set photographs, contacts sheets, slides, and a scrapbook.

The Late Show series (1 linear foot) consists of materials from the 1977 film written and directed by Robert Benton, and produced by Robert Altman. The series includes several versions of the script, publicity files, reviews, photographs, slides and contact sheets.

The Long Goodbye series (1 linear foot and 4 oversized boxes) consists of materials from the 1973 film directed by Robert Altman. The series includes correspondence, legal materials, scripts, music and scores, publicity and distribution, articles and reviews, photographs, publicity stills, on-the-set images, scrapbooks and photo albums, and unpublished manuscripts regarding the film.

The MASH series (.5 linear feet and 1 oversized box) consists of materials from the 1970 film directed by Robert Altman. The McCabe and Mrs. Miller series (.5 linear feet and 2 oversized boxes) consists of materials from the 1971 film directed and co-written by Robert Altman. The series includes a script, publicity files of the major performers, domestic and international reviews of the film, publicity stills, on-the-set photographs, slides and contact sheets.

The Nashville series (5 linear feet and 4 oversized boxes) consists of materials from the 1975 film written by Joan Tewkesbury and directed by Robert Altman. The series includes several versions of the script, publicity files of the major performers, domestic and international reviews of the film, publicity stills, on-the-set photographs, slides and contact sheets.

The A Perfect Couple series (2 linear feet and 1 oversized box) consists of materials from the 1979 film directed by Robert Altman, co-written by Altman and Allan Nicholls. The series includes legal agreements, financial records, scripts, publicity and distribution, reviews, photographs and several oversized foreign movie posters.

The Quintet series (2 linear feet and 1 oversized box) consists of materials from the 1979 film co-written and directed by Robert Altman, which includes legal agreements, several versions of the script, the musical score, publicity and distribution information, reviews, photographs, and autographs from the cast.

The Remember My Name series (.75 linear feet and 1 oversized box) consists of materials from the 1978 film written and directed by Alan Rudolph and produced by Robert Altman. The series includes legal documents, business and financial records, scripts, publicity materials, articles and reviews, publicity stills, contact sheets, and slides.

The Rich Kids series (1 linear foot) consists of materials from the 1977 film produced by Robert Altman, written by Judith Ross, and directed by Robert Young. The materials include legal documents, scripts, production documents, plot and production summaries, domestic and international reviews, publicity stills, contact sheets and slides.

The Thieves Like Us series (1 linear foot and 1 oversized box) consists of materials from the 1973 film co-written with Joan Tewskesbury and Clader Willingham, and directed by Robert Altman. The series includes correspondence, legal materials, scripts, music and scores, publicity and distribution, articles and reviews, photographs, publicity stills, on-the-set images, scrapbooks and photo albums.

The 3 Women series (2.5 linear feet and 1 oversized box) consists of materials from the 1977 film written and directed by Robert Altman. The series includes correspondence, legal materials, a script, music, publicity and distribution materials, articles and reviews, awards and festivals materials, publicity stills and a scrapbook.

The A Wedding series (5.75 linear feet) consists of materials from the 1978 film and the 2004 opera. The film was co-written and directed by Robert Altman. The opera was done in collaboration with the Lyric Opera of Chicago, composed by William Bolcom and directed by Altman.

The Welcome to L.A. series (1.5 linear feet) consists of materials from the 1978 film written and directed by Alan Rudolph and produced by Robert Altman. The series includes legal materials, financial and business records, scripts, music cue sheets and song lyrics, publicity materials, articles and reviews, on-the-set photographs, publicity stills, contact sheets and slides.

Scope and Content Note

The Brewster McCloud series (1 linear foot and 1 oversized box) consists of materials from the 1971 film directed by Robert Altman, and written by Doran William Cannon. The film features the actors Bud Cort, Sally Kellerman, Michael Murphy, Shelley Duvall, Rene Auberjonois, Stacy Keach, Bert Remsen, Jennifer Salt and John Schuck. Slides contain images from a cast and crew softball game played in the Astrodome, where a portion of the film is set. Additionally, the slides contain images of birds, possibly taken by the titular character. The scrapbook features original artwork for the film, and photographs of the cast and crew, assembled by producer Lou Adler. Additionally, the photographs contain an inscribed on-the-set still given to Altman by actor Cort. Many of the on-the-set images feature Altman and Cort testing the flying apparatus. Additional materials include a foreign press kit, an original script by Cannon (the film then called Brewster McCloud’s Flying Machine), and various caricatures of the cast.

The Buffalo Bill and the Indians, or Chief Sitting Bull's History Lesson (4 linear feet and 1 oversized box) series consists of materials from the 1976 film directed by Robert Altman from a screenplay by Altman and Alan Rudolph, based on the play Indians by Arthur Kopit. The film features the actors Paul Newman, Joel Grey, Kevin McCarthy, Harvey Keitel, Geraldine Chaplin, Bert Remsen, and John Considine.

The legal sub-series includes correspondence, production, distribution and finance agreements, and a three-picture deal—which includes Buffalo Bill—between Altman’s company Lion’s Gate Films and Dino De Laurentiis Corporation (Ragtime and North Dallas Forty were the two remaining projects).

The correspondence sub-series include a hand-written and typed statement from Altman in response to the Hollywood Film Council, who claimed the film had a “disregard for the history” of the United States.

The production and distribution sub-series include a brief biography of set designer Tony Masters, and photographs of his renderings of the set.

The publicity and distribution sub-series contain articles pertaining to a screening and press conference hosted by Altman and Paul Newman in New York City, May 1-2,

1976. Also included are extensive press kits, one in the style of the period of the film. A promotional copy of the script and several programs are done in a similar style.

The photograph sub-series include many images of Altman directing on-the-set, cast photographs and images of painted posters used as set decoration.

The California Split series consists of material from the 1974 film co-produced and directed by Robert Altman, and written by Joseph Walsh. The film features the actors Elliott Gould, George Segal, Ann Prentiss, Gwen Welles, Edward Walsh, Bert Remsen, and Jeff Goldblum.

The bulk of the legal materials consist of correspondence regarding production-distribution agreements, memos regarding "final cut" of the film, actors' agreements, financial agreements, agreements of sale, lending agreements, and print delivery agreements. Within these materials, a portion details a dispute regarding Joseph Walsh's writing credits in advertisements for the film. Additional legal materials include Charles Kray's claim regarding co-authorship of the script.

The bulk of the photographs contain stills, transparencies and negatives. This series includes a scrapbook of newspaper clippings.

The Images series (approximately 1 linear foot and 1 oversized box) consists of materials from the 1972 film written and directed by Robert Altman. The film features the actors Susannah York, Rene Auberjonois, Marcel Bozzuffi, Hugh Millais, and Cathryn Harrison.

Correspondence includes a series of letters composed by Auberjonois to Altman to clarify the credit dispute regarding advertisements for the film, as well as a series of letters from author Ray Loynd, and Marianne Dolan, who directed a documentary on the production of the film. Correspondence also includes three thank-you notes written by Altman to Roger Watts, Jean Sacha and Arthur Ford.

The series includes material from the legal offices of Jerome Walsh. The music sub-series include film composer John Williams' hand-written score. Portions of Ms. York' children's story, In Search of Unicorns, which Altman incorporated into the film, are included in the production and post-production materials, as well as the unproduced screenplay she completed in 1993.

The Late Show series consists of materials from the 1977 film written and directed by Robert Benton, produced by Robert Altman. The film features the actors Art Carney, Lily Tomlin, Bill Macy, Eugene Roche, Joanna Cassidy, John Considine, and Ruth Nelson.

The production and post-production sub-series includes stills used as props in the film, featured in Carney’s character’s apartment. The photographs include two on-the-set pictures of Altman speaking with Carney during production.

The Long Goodbye series (1 linear foot and 4 oversized boxes) consists of materials from the 1973 film directed by Robert Altman and written by Leigh Brackett and based on the Raymond Chandler novel. The film features the actors Elliott Gould, Nina Van Pallandt, Sterling Hayden, Mark Rydell, Henry Gibson, David Arkin and Jim Bouton.

Correspondence includes a note from Altman to Italian director and screenwriter Gian Luigi Rondi, describing his decision to film the Chandler work. The legal materials detail the loan-out agreement between Altman and United Artists. Publicity and distribution contains original one-sheet advertisements for the film, and multiple transparencies of the Jack Davis illustrations used for the poster advertisements as part of the film's revised ad campaign. The music includes the sheet music of the title theme composed by Johnny Mandel and John Williams. The photographs include several black and white stills by photographer Mel Traxel, with two images of Altman and Steve McQueen, and one with actress Sally Kellerman. Included are two commemorative photo-books given to the cast and crew, acknowledging their work on the film.

The MASH series (.5 linear feet and 1 oversized box) consists of materials from the 1970 film directed by Robert Altman from a screenplay by Ring Lardner Jr., based on the

novel by Richard Hooker. The actors in the film include Donald Sutherland, Elliot Gould, Tom Skerrit, Sally Kellerman, Robert Duvall, Joann Pflug, Rene Auberjonois, John Shuck, Michael Murphy, and Bud Cort.

The legal materials contain a lawsuit filed in 1973 by Andrew Sidaris against 20th

Century-Fox for breach of contract. The correspondence sub-series include letters from producer Richard Zanuck,

actors John Considine, and from Dennis Hopper and Norman Taurang, who were members of the Directors Guild of America at the time, honoring Altman for his work on MASH, from 1970.

The music sub-series includes Mike Altman’s original lyric sheets and hand-written notations for the song, "Song from MASH (Suicide is Painless).” Also included is the sheet music for the recorded version of the song. The photographs include pictures of a trip to the Cannes Film Festival, where the film was honored that year. One photo contains an inscription to Altman by playwright Irwin Shaw. The slides include images of both Kellerman and Pflug relaxing in a hotel room while at Cannes.

The articles and reviews include articles detailing the ban of the film by the U.S. Army and Air Force (later rescinded), and by the Israeli Censorship Board, in 1970. The awards, events and festivals include a guest list, correspondence and schedule of events from the American Film Institute’s 25th anniversary screening, in 1995. The Fox Movie Channel 30th anniversary event materials include guest lists, correspondence and related materials, and correspondence regarding the Fox television special, Altman on His Own Terms. An original cartoon by Paul Conrad is also included in the collection.

The McCabe and Mrs. Miller series (.5 linear feet and 2 oversized boxes) consists of materials from the 1971 film co-written by Robert Altman and Brain McKay, and directed by Robert Altman. The film stars Warren Beatty, Julie Christie, Rene Auberjonois, William Devane and John Schuck.

The Miscellaneous sub-series includes a poem sent to Altman by a fan of the film, in 1983.

Publicity and distribution includes a drawing of Beatty and Christie as their characters John McCabe and Mrs. Miller.

The Nashville series (5 linear feet and 4 oversized boxes) consists of materials from the 1975 film written by Joan Tewkesbury and directed by Robert Altman. The legal sub-series contain the various agreements between ABC Entertainment, who produced the film, and Lion's Gate and Landscape Films, Altman's production companies. Additionally, the legal materials are comprised of litigation from Ms. Ronee Blakely regarding payment of music royalties. The claim was initially filed in 2004, and most of the documents are comprised of correspondence and court documents.

Production materials include a wardrobe, plot and photographs book assembled by Jules M. Melillo, who served as head of the wardrobe department, featuring the cast in costume, and a log documenting the scenes in which they appear.

Music and scores contain photocopies of sheet music for several of the featured songs. Publicity and distribution contain material pertaining to the 25th anniversary of the film's release. Members of the cast were reunited to celebrate the film in print publications but also at several events and screenings. The anniversary prompted a variety of correspondence pertaining to the film's restoration, located in the publicity and distribution sub-series. The photographs sub-series contain oversized pictures of a cast reunion organized by Premiere magazine, to coincide with the film's 25th anniversary. These photographs accompanied an oral history on the making of the film, also published in the magazine. Finally, publications include dissertations by Michael Haywood, and Helene Keyssar.

The A Perfect Couple series (2 linear feet and 1 oversized box) consists of materials from the 1979 film directed by Robert Altman, co-written by Altman and Allan

Nicholls. The film features the actors Paul Dooley, Marta Heflin, Titos Vandis, Henry Gibson, Dennis Franz, Dimitra Arliss and Belita Moreno.

The series includes extensive material from the rock band Keepin' 'Em Off the Streets who performed original songs in the film. This material includes legal documents, publicity material and advertising from concerts at the Roxy Theatre in Los Angeles, a review of their album and concerts, photographs, contact sheets, negatives and slides. Featured within the photographs are images of the band performing at the Roxy, and the contact sheets include a small number of pictures of Altman directing on-the-set.

The Quintet series consists of material from the 1979 film directed by Robert Altman. The script was co-written by Altman, Frank Barhydt and Patricia Resnick, and based on a story by Altman, Resnick, and Lionel Chetwynd. The film features the actors Paul Newman, Bibi Andersson, Brigitte Fossey, Vittorio Gassman, David Langton, Monique Mercure, Nina Van Pallandt, and Fernando Rey.

The scripts include Altman's original story outline for the film. Publicity and distribution includes rules and concept sketches by Altman, who planned a board-game tie-in with the toy company Kenner. These materials include the game rules, as well as concept sketches of the board and the box. Additionally, the sub-series include correspondence from a fan accompanied by pictures of her homemade board.

Included in the series is an oversized painting by Michel Pellus, originally to be used in the film’s trailer. Additionally, articles about the artist and his working process as well as slides and photographs of the painting in various stages of completion are included.

Newman's publicity file includes an article about an automobile race he participated in while in Montreal during filming, as well as several slides of the competition.

The slides include location shots, test shots of a model train in the snow, and test shots utilizing a special filter used in the production. The on-the-set photos document the set construction of the futuristic city featured in the film.

Actors’ autographs were collected for Altman's step-daughter, and among them is a signature from Newman. The realia sub-series includes an over-sized painting.

The Remember My Name series (.75 linear feet and 1 oversized box) consists of materials from the 1978 film written and directed by Alan Rudolph and produced by Robert Altman. The film features the actors Anthony Perkins, Geraldine Chaplin, Moses Gunn, Berry Berenson, Jeff Goldblum, Alfre Woodard, and Dennis Franz.

The legal materials include distribution agreements, music agreements and correspondence, as well as American Federation of Musicians contracts, detailing the recording sessions for several Hunter songs featured in the film.

The business and financial sub-series contains distribution costs, as well as gross totals from within the United States and internationally.

Publicity and distribution contain press coverage of an Alberta Hunter press luncheon in Memphis, Tennessee to honor the blues-singer and her appointment as the film’s composer. This sub-series also includes press coverage of the film's world premiere in Memphis.

The Rich Kids series (1 linear foot) consists of materials from the 1977 film produced by Robert Altman, written by Judith Ross, and directed by Robert Young. The film features the actors Trini Alvarado, Jeremy Levy, Kathryn Walker, John Lithgow, Paul Dooley, David Selby, Terry Kiser, and Olympia Dukakis.

The production materials include lists of the production crew, staff, and location information, and background information pertaining to the production and plot, used for publicity purposes. The photograph sub-series include publicity stills, contact sheets, and slides. One of the contact sheets features a picture of actress Sarah Jessica Parker, whose scenes were ultimately cut from the film.

The Thieves Like Us series (1 linear foot and 1 oversized box) consists of materials from the 1973 film co-written with Joan Tewskesbury and Clader Willingham, and

directed by Robert Altman.The film stars Keith Carradine, Shelley Duvall, John Schuck, Bert Remesen, Tom Skerritt, and Louise Fletcher.

The legal sub-series include agreements, and correspondence regarding United Artists, as well as distribution and budget information. Publicity and distribution sub-series include a list of individuals invited to an early screening of the film. The photographs in an oversize box include sepia-tone portraits by artist Jean Pagliuso.

The 3 Women series (2.5 linear feet and 1 oversized box) consists of materials from the 1977 film written and directed by Robert Altman. The actors featured in the film include Sissy Spacek, Shelley Duvall, Janice Rule, and Robert Fortier.

Legal contains film composer Gerald Busby's agreements with Broadview Films, who produced the film. The music sub-series contain Busby's original score.

Scripts contain Altman's initial treatments, several drafts, and Millie Lammoreaux's diary entries, composed by Duvall. Publicity and distribution include several advertisements by photographer Jean Pugliuso and title designer Dan Perri.

Articles and reviews include a New York Times feature on Bodhi Wind, the artist who provided the murals featured in the film. Additionally, his file includes photographs and several slides of his work.

The awards, events and festivals contain photographs from the 1977 Cannes Film Festival, where Altman, Shelley Duvall and Sissy Spacek were received. Additionally, two Cannes programs from the event are included.

The A Wedding series (5.75 linear feet) consists of materials from the 1978 film and the 2004 opera. The film was written by John Considine and Robert Altman, and directed by Altman. The opera was done in collaboration with the Lyric Opera of Chicago, composed by William Bolcom and directed by Altman.

The film features the actors Desi Arnaz Jr., Carol Burnett, Geraldine Chaplin, John Considine, Mia Farrow, Lillian Gish, Viveca Lindfors, and Nina Van Pallandt. The legal materials include agreements with 20th Century-Fox regarding the distribution of the film, as well as agreements with The Dinah Shore Show regarding television clips used in the film.

Included in the production and post-production materials is a diary by actress Margaret Ladd, chronicling her experience during filming.

The publicity and distribution materials include extensive interviews conducted by publicist Jack Hirshberg, who was on the set in the summer of 1977 conducting interviews with several cast members.

The awards, events and festivals include documents from the world premiere--a benefit for the Chicago Rehabilitation Institute, and articles and photographs of Grace Kelly visiting the set. Additional materials include articles related to Altman’s announcement pledging a portion of the film’s profits to support the Equal Rights Amendment.

The opera legal materials include correspondence regarding the rights to the film, and agreements between the Lyric Opera of Chicago and Altman.

The production and post-production materials include set designs by Robin Wagner, and oversized scene-to-scene drawings, detailing specific aspects of the set.

The Welcome to L.A. series (1.5 linear feet) consists of materials from the 1978 film written and directed by Alan Rudolph and produced by Robert Altman. The film features the actors Keith Carradine, Sissy Spacek, John Considine, Lauren Hutton, Geraldine Chaplin, Richard Baskin, Harvey Keitel, and Sally Kellerman.

The legal subseries include the terms of agreement with Altman regarding the financing and distribution of the film, Rudolph’s director’s agreement, the sales agreement and Baskin’s music contract.

The music and scores sub-series include the lyrics to Baskin's jazz suite "City of the One Night Stands," and several other songs. The publicity and distribution sub-series include a folder of interviews given by the cast members as publicity for the film.

The articles and reviews include materials from a notebook regarding the Seattle premiere. These materials include advertisements, reviews and publicity material.

The photographs include both stills and on-the-set shots, featuring Carradine, Hutton and Spacek. The slides are extensive and include the names of the photographers who took the images. The awards, events and festivals sub-series include a guest list to the cast party hosted by Altman at the Elaine’s restaurant in New York City.
