Juno History• The Juno Awards are named in honor of Pierre Juneau, who was the very first President of the Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission and former President of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. In the early 1970s, Juneau was the architect of the CRTC’s Canadian content regulations which require that a certain percentage of radio and television time be devoted to programming or music which is produced in Canada. This action created a market for Canadian music and fueled the subsequent boom in music production. In 1971, Juneau received a special Juno Award, being named “Canadian music industry Man of the Year.”

• The Juno Award was originally called the RPM Gold Leaf Awards, created by “RPM Magazine” publishers. They were awarded for the first time in 1970. That evening, 250 people showed up at the doors, which was twice the number of people who had actually been invited. Anne Murray had the flu and almost didn’t make it to the ceremony. The name was changed to Juno Awards the following year, simplifying Juneau’s name.

• The ceremony was broadcast on TV for the first time in 1975. CBC had the rights at the time

• Starting in 1964, “RPM Magazine” polled its readers to determine the best artists in Canada, releasing the results in December. JUNO AWARDS HISTORY• Starting in 1964, “RPM Magazine” polled its readers to determine the best artists in Canada, releasing the results in December. From 1970 to 1973, winners of the Juno Awards were announced in “RPM Magazine” prior to the awards night. Starting in 1974, the award winners were not made public until the Juno ceremonies.• The first Juno Award trophies were constructed from walnut, stood 18 inches (46 cm) tall, and resembled a metronome. When the ceremonies were televised beginning in 1975, the award was redesigned and was made out of clear acrylic instead, while still retaining the metronome shape. In 2000, producers complained that the trophy didn’t look good on TV and they asked for a re-design. Ontario artist Shirley Elford designed the new award, made from glass. It depicts a human figure surrounded by a nickel-coated spiral (which is symbolic of a musical staff) situated on a base of aluminum.• The Juno Awards, customarily held in Toronto, were hosted outside of Toronto for the very first time in 1991, being held in Vancouver. Since then they’ve been held in cities from coast to coast. The ceremony did not return to Toronto until the year 2011, which marked the ceremony’s 40th anniversary.

• George Wilson, who hosted for five consecutive years when the Juno Awards first began, has hosted more programs than anyone else. Burton Cummings comes in second place, with four appearances as host.• A Humanitarian Award was inaugurated in 2006. Bruce Cockburn was the first artist to be given this honor.• 1.6 million viewers watched the entire show in 2012, and 6.5 million viewers tuned in for at least part of the program. AND THE WINNER IS…• The nominations for each year’s Junos are based on an eligibility period which lasts for 13 to 14 months, ending on the mid-November prior to the awards ceremony.• The Artist of the Year and Group of the Year nominations are determined by sales and a CARAS member vote. CARAS stands for Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, and they are responsible for the management and operation of the Juno Awards.• The nominees for Album of the Year and International Album of the Year are determined by sales figures. • The New Artist of the Year, New Group of the Year, Rock Album of the Year, and Pop Album of the Year are determined by sales in conjunction with a jury vote. TOP ARTISTS• At the 2007 ceremony, Nelly Furtado made Juno history by being the first nominee with multiple nominations to win every award for which she was nominated, including the two most prestigious honors, Album of the Year and Artist of the Year. The following year, Feist won all five categories in which she was nominated.

She had forgotten to book a limo so her drummer had to drive her to the stage door, where she made it just in the nick of time.• When Shania Twain was hosting in 2003, she wore six custom-designed outfits emblazoned with different hockey team logos throughout the evening.• Ronnie Hawkins inadvertently tore a hole in his tuxedo pants onstage in 1981.IT’S A FACT• In the mid-1970s, singer/songwriter David Bradstreet won a Juno award as Most Promising Male Vocalist. By the 1980s he’d fallen on hard times, having strained his voice and grown disenchanted with the industry. He half-jokingly tried to sell his Juno at a garage sale, but the $15,000 price tag he put on it discouraged any buyers. Not long afterwards he began recording film scores in his home studio, and began touring again in the 1990s. He won even more Junos in 1999, 2000, and 2002, which he presumably did not sell at garage sales.

Lancelot looks rough. He has every right to look that way considering he’s had a very rough go in life so far. At some point this boy must have been someone’s pet. However it is clear that for quite some time now he has been surviving on his own. He was found as a starving stray and a kind human began feeding him. Lancelot probably used several of his nine lives when he was attacked by a coyote. The coyote had poor Lancelot in his jaws and only dropped him because a person intervened and chased the coyote off. Lancelot arrived at Katie’s Place in very bad shape. Over the weeks he’s been receiving the care he needs to recover, and learning to enjoy human company again. It took him a bit of time to fully trust us and now he’s become a volunteer favorite. Lancelot has a funny walk and scars to show

all he’s been through but otherwise he’s a sweet, loving boy who needs a safe home where he will be loved again. Hedwig is our version of Grumpy Cat. He has a wise owl like face that has us convinced he is capable of mind control. He is a striking cat

with gorgeous eyes and has already captivated most of the volunteers. It seems that anyone who looks his way falls immediately in love, thus our belief in the mind control theory. Hedwig loves to play and has been seen rolling around playing with his catnip toys. Of course he only does this when he’s not aware we are watching. He’s far too refined for that sort of silly cat like behaviour. Hedwig came to us from another shelter and we have been told that sometimes he pees outside the box. But we are certain in the right home this can be corrected. Some cats are simply finicky about their litter and a change in the type of litter used may be all that this amazing boy needs. If you have it in your heart to give Hedwig a chance you will be rewarded in many ways. And maybe he will even spare you the mind control.

Q: I read in your column about J.C., from Oregon, whose dog was having breathing (problems), which sounds like what our dog used to experience. She’d been leash trained and always pulled. I began to think I was harming her and purchased a harness instead for our Beagle/Pekeapoo mix. Was I right, and could a harness be more useful? - M.W., Canton, IL

A: “You’re right that constant pulling on the leash can affect a dog’s breathing, and even create pressure on the eyes (possibly leading to glaucoma),” says veterinary behaviorist Dr. Gary Landsberg, of Thornhill, Ontario, Canada. “A harness or head halter is definitely preferred.” Many veterinarians also believe that “choke collars” can cause or contribute to collapsing tracheas later in life. You could consult a dog trainer or certified dog behavior consultant on how to encourage your dog to walk on a loose leash. Clicker training can be a great tool for this. There are also some excellent video examples teaching techniques at www.abrionline.org.

“HYDE PARK ON HUDSON’’: Rather than merely doing an impersonation, Bill Murray makes a surprisingly credible Franklin Delano Roosevelt in director Roger Michell’s (“Notting Hill’’) portrait of the president during a weekend visit from British royalty (Samuel West, Olivia Colman) at his home in upstate New York. Not only is he concerned with affairs of state, but also with another affair ... specifically, the one he has with a distant cousin (Laura Linney). Olivia Williams and Elizabeth Wilson also star. DVD extras: two “making-of ’’ documentaries; audio commentary by Michell and producer Kevin Loader; deleted scenes. ***

“BOSS: SEASON TWO’’: The sophomore season of the Starz drama series turned out to be its last, but not for any lack of memorable acting by Kelsey Grammer, still ferocious as imperious - and secretly ill - Chicago Mayor Tom Kane. The saga resumes with a shocking attack that has long-range effects on Kane and those closest to him ... though getting close to him is, admittedly, not an easy thing. Notable cast additions for this round include Sanaa Lathan as Kane’s chief of staff and Jonathan Groff (“Glee’’) as a relative newcomer to the political scene. Among other returnees are Connie Nielsen, Hannah Ware, Martin Donovan, Jeff Hephner, Kathleen Robertson and Troy Garity. ***

“INSIDE MEN’’: Initially shown last summer on BBC America, this well-written drama about acting on the evils of temptation casts Steven Mackintosh (“Luther’’), Ashley Walters and Warren Brown as employees of a British money-counting firm who decide to take advantage of their jobs. They plan a robbery that will make them immediately wealthy, but the moral and psychological fallout from the heist turns out to be much more than they bargained for. ***

“ORCHESTRA OF EXILES’’: The roots of the Israel Philharmonic are traced in director Josh Aronson’s documentary, detailing how Polish violinist Bronislaw Huberman spearheaded a four-year effort to spirit Jewish musicians out of Nazi Germany and assemble them into an orchestra. The resulting story is expectedly affecting on a number of levels, including the artistic and emotional ones. ***

Canadian Tid-bits▶ It takes about 40 litres (10.5 gallons) of maple sap to make a single litre (.25 gallon) of maple syrup.

▶ The Bluefish Caves in the Yukon reveal the oldest evidence of humans ever found in North America. Tools uncovered in the caves were found to be nearly 25,000 years old, when it’s generally accepted that the North American continent has only been inhabited by humans for about 12,000 years.

▶ The world’s strongest current is found in the Nakwakto Rapids at Slingsby Channel, British Columbia. The current has been measured at speeds up to 29 km/hr (18.4 mph).

▶ In 1914 a hunter shot a black bear. A soldier subsequently bought the bear’s orphaned cub from the hunter for $20, naming her after his hometown of Winnipeg. The cub became the regiment’s mascot, accompanying them to World War I, where the cub was donated to the London Zoo. She became known as Winnie, and a young boy named Christopher Robin Milne re-named his toy teddy bear Winnie after seeing her at the zoo. Christopher’s father wrote the stories about Winnie the Pooh because of this bear cub.
