Spring is defi nitely here! The weather is warmer, the daylight hours are longer and beautiful fl owers can be seen all around. It’s also a time to look forward to many annual traditions in our Ridge Meadows Community.
With spring often being a time of change, it’s very exciting to be showcasing many traditional plus new events in this issue! Enjoy meeting new people at the upcoming inaugural Spring Social Market event in Pitt Meadows, and, take the time to visit with long-time friends and to learn about the history of Maple Ridge at the upcoming Historical Society’s Annual Heritage Tea.
If you’re new to the community, be sure to contact the local Welcome Wagon team and arrange to have them visit with you, to fi ll you in on all there is to know about the great cities of Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows.
I’m also excited to recognize this issue of What’s On! Ridge Meadows as an anniversary celebration for me, as I start year two as Owner and Publisher of this magazine. What an exciting year of growth and new experiences it has been. Thank you to all the long-time loyal advertisers and readers who have welcomed me so warmly, and thank you to all the new advertisers and readers for connecting with the What’s On! Ridge Meadows magazine. Whether in-print, online, via our Facebook page, or Twitter posts, it’s wonderful to be connected to you!
Cheers to another great year! Enjoy this issue!

KinderHeartMontessoriKinderHeart Montessori is currently registering for preschool at Edith
McDermott Elementary in Pitt Meadows for September 2015.
Montessori education is a very real, organic way of showing your child
respect. Maria Montessori encouraged adults to recognize and respect the
child’s need for truth and reality. She emphasized providing real,
child-sized tools to acknowledge and support the child’s need for work
which develops order, concentration, coordination, and independence.
We offer an authentic Montessori environmentwith trained Montessori teachers.

Thank-you to all of our wonderful clients, past and present, who have helped to make our success possible. Read more about what our clients think of us at www.sellingmapleridge/testimonials.
Did you know that we donate a portion of every commission to the Royal LePage Shelter Foundation? Every dollar of our contribution goes to Cythera Transition House Society located right here in Maple Ridge.
Natalie from the Albion area of Maple Ridge asks: Is there a way to turn what is a sometimes stressful experience when selling your home to be a more positive one?
Things that can create stress when selling your home are largely centered on feeling unprepared, having to make major decisions on the spot, encountering surprises, and of course the inconvenience of showings. The good news is that there are ways to alleviate these stressors and you can work with your team of professionals to ensure the process is a more positive one.
Ask your REALTOR ® to show you the listings that will be your competition and listen to their opinions on price and current market trends. Have them walk you through some scenarios you might encounter and plan for how you will
make necessary decisions ahead of time. Speak to your mortgage broker about what the numbers look like and have a clear idea of what price you can go to for your sale and how it will affect your next step. Know ahead of time who your lawyer/notary, insurance broker, and home inspector will be. We also suggest having a pre-inspection done on your home, depending somewhat on the age. This way you can either remediate items that could affect marketability or simply price accordingly for someone else to come in and do the work.
The inconveniences of showings are a part of selling your home. Use the professional resources that allow you to have your home show and sale ready, and ideally it is sold before you know it.

Lets Get Fishy!Fish PiePreparation time: 15 minutes - Cooking time: 45 minutesServes: 4-6
Method...Preheat the oven to 400F. Put the potatoes in a saucepan and pour over enough water to cover them. Salt lightly and bring to the boil and then simmer until tender. When cooked, allow to drain thoroughly, then mash with the milk and butter. Season with ground black pepper.
Cook for 1 -2 mins. Gradually whisk in the milk. Bring to the boil. Keep stirring to prevent the sauce sticking or becoming lumpy. Cook for 3 – 4 minutes until it’s thickened.
Spoon the potato evenly over the top. At this point you can let it cool, then cover and freeze the pie for another day. Defrost before cooking, then sprinkle with cheddar cheese if using. Place in the oven for 20 - 25 mins or until golden and bubbling at the edges.

Maple Ridge artists Ollie and Janine Smith have been active members of the Garibaldi Art Club for over a decade. They have each shown their works at the ACT, both in the Gallery and on the Passagio; at Fraserview Village for the clubs annual Fall Shows; at Swan-E-Set Golf and Country Club and at Place des Arts in Coquitlam. Each has won Honourable Mentions and People’s Choice Awards.
Ollie Smith is an accomplished and talented artist who maintained her art while raising her six children. She started to draw as a small child and her enthusiasm for art continued to grow. It has been a major part of her life providing her with much joy. She shared this zeal with her family and from the time they could hold a pencil the Smith children drew with their mother around the kitchen table. The family tradition carries on whenever they get together as they put their own twist on colouring in unique colouring books.
Twice a year Ollie and Janine make a list of 20 things to draw to motivate each other and improve their skills. Janine’s passion took hold at an early age and she loves what art brings to her life. She has studied and worked in most mediums and fully admits her addiction to art supplies.
As a life-long artist Ollie has taken numerous art courses and workshops, some with acclaimed artists. She has also taken three accredited art programs over the years.
then two correspondence courses, one with Famous Artists School in the 1960s and the next with I.C.S. in the 1990s. She had a One-Women-Show at Place Des Art and has been commissioned to paint many subjects from portraits to vintage cars. Janine has had the mentorship of her mother and the late local artist, Aeron McBryde. She has travelled through Europe, one of her goals being to see the great masterpieces she’d previously only seen in books. After an accident she found that art gave her a focus and was healing therapy. She continues to take workshops given by some of BC’s top artists. Her Father was a pianist and although she does not play herself she listens to classical music while she paints. This music provides an emotional aspect to her painting while she gets lost in her art for hours.
Janine is grateful for her childhood training as a young artist. She learned early the importance of appreciating even the simplest things – a sunset, clouds, faces,
Her nature is sensitive and together with her mother’s early nurture she has developed the ability to produce excellent painting. She paints what she sees and faithfully represents her subject in a realistic, charismatic style. The Garibaldi Art Club members have been so supportive of her over the years that she encourages anyone interested in becoming an artist to join.

To celebrate 120 years of speaking for animals, the BC SPCA is asking animal lovers to join with us to carry out a million acts of kindness for animals throughout 2015.
Each week we’ll feature an act of kindness. Take action and help spread the word by sharing your acts with friends and family. You can do as many or as few as you want, but the first step is simply to sign up to fight cruelty with kindness.
If one act of kindness can change the life of an animal forever, imagine what one million acts can do!
Sign up today at millionacts.ca.The British Columbia Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is a not-for-profit organization reliant on public donations.
Our mission is to protect and enhance the quality of life for domestic, farm and wild animals in British Columbia.
