by Janet SpencerCome along with Tidbits as we celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Grey Cup!• Albert Grey, 4th Earl Grey, was a British nobleman and politician who served as the ninth Governor General of Canada from 1904 to 1911. He was a big supporter of the arts and sports. In 1909 he commissioned the creation of a trophy for a total cost of $48, which he intended to donate for Canada’s senior amateur hockey championship. When he was beat to the punch by the donation of the Allan Cup for that purpose, he instead gave the trophy to the national championship of Canadian football.• After promising the trophy, however, he procrastinated on placing the order, with the result that it wasn’t ordered until two weeks before the first championship game. The first Grey Cup game was held on December 4, 1909, and the University of Toronto Varsity Blues defeated the Parkdale Canoe Club 26 to 6 before a crowd of 3,800 spectators. The trophy wasn’t ready for presentation following the game, and the victors didn’t end up receiving it until the following March.• 2012 marks the 100th anniversary of the Grey Cup, which is a little odd considering the first Grey Cup was held in 1909. However, play was suspended from 1916 to 1918 due to World War I, and in 1919 due to a rules dispute.

TIDBITS® CELEBRATES THE

Page 2: Ridge Meadows 29

Page 2 Tidbits of Ridge Meadows For Advertising Call (604) 638-7399GREY CUP (continued):• The first Grey Cup was awarded in 1909. When the Hamilton Tigers won the Cup in 1915, they added their name to it not only for the year 1915, but also for the year 1908—a year before the Cup had even been invented, in order to give the appearance that their team had won the first Grey Cup.• The trophy consists of a sterling silver chalice which is attached to a large base. The original base was made out of wood, with silver shields embedded in it. Each shield listed the championship year and the winning team’s name. The base was redesigned in 1987, and is now made of black-lacquered aluminum. The engraved silver plates attached are etched with the names of each winning team’s players and executives. The trophy will run out of room for new additions following the 2012 Grey Cup, at which time the base will be redesigned, while retaining a similar look to its current design. The chalice is made of sterling silver and stands 33 centimetres (13 in) tall, while the base stands 84 centimeters (33 in) high.THE TROPHY

• Members of the winning teams are allowed to take the trophy with them to celebrate, either in their home town or on tour. It’s accompanied by a designated member of the Canadian Football Hall of Fame at all times, however, and it’s the trustees of the Hall of Fame who control it for public appearances and rental events. However, there have been some mishaps with the Cup.

• The trophy has been broken several times: in 1978, it was dropped by celebrating Edmonton Eskimos players; in 1987, an Eskimos player sat on it; in 1993, Edmonton’s Blake Dermott head-butted it; and in 2006, the trophy broke away from its base as the BC Lions celebrated their victory.

SWEATER WEATHERIn many areas November is still “sweater weather.” It’s not cold enough for winter coats but a nice wool, cashmere or even a cotton or synthetic sweater is just right for the cool temperatures. • Sweaters have been around for centuries. The need for something warm to add a layer for cool days brought about the hobbies of knitting and crocheting. • Sweaters were only used for warmth or as athletic items, not fashion, until the 1920s. When Lana Turner appeared in a fashionable sweater in the 1937 movie, “They Won’t Forget,” sweaters became a fashion statement “must” for women. • Cardigans, pullovers, sweater vests and more are now fashionable for men, women, boys and girls. One man who became known for wearing a sweater was “Mr. Rogers.”• Fred McFeely Rogers, started the series, Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood in 1966. Prior to the show that made him a household name in children’s programming, he had produced The Children’s Corner in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in the early 1950s, winning the first of many television awards.• A gentle, humble television star, Mr. Rogers became the symbolic sweater-wearer. His show would start by him entering his “television house” after walking from his office. He entered wearing his formal business attire and as he sang the words, “won’t you be my neighbor,” he would change into more comfortable clothes like his sweater and sneakers. This was the way he chose to get comfortable with friends as he shared his day with them in the “land of make-believe” and other areas of his neighborhood.

FAMOUS LANDMARKS OF THE WORLD:

THE BERLIN WALLThe Berlin Wall started as a barbed wire fence, constructed overnight as Berliners slept. Imagine the shock of finding you couldn’t cross from one side of the city to the other. • The city of Berlin and country of Germany was divided at the conclusion of World War II. The Soviet Union and communism controlled the East, with the allied powers of Great Britain, France and the United States controlling the West in a democracy. So it was a West vs. East; democracy vs. communism divide. • By 1949, the division of Germany and the city of Berlin was official. West Germany was called the Federal Republic of Germany and East Germany was the German Democratic Republic. Since Berlin was entirely within the East, and it was agreed that the city would be divided, West Berlin was like an island of democracy within East Germany, surrounded by a wall.

• When the Germans in the Soviet-controlled East became disillusioned with the economic and political oppression of communism, many defected to the West. Approximately 1,500 people per day were fleeing to the West seeking democracy by 1961.• Rumors arose that the German Democratic Republic was going to do something drastic to stop the movement of people to the West. That became a reality during the night of August 12-13, 1961, when soldiers and construction crews were brought in after midnight. While the people of East and West Berlin slept, crews tore up the streets, put up concrete posts and strung barbed wire separating the east and west. They even cut the telephone lines.• Upon awakening on the morning of August 13th, Berliners were shocked to see the border. They could no longer visit friends and relatives on the other side. More than 60,000 commuters who went to better-paying jobs in West Berlin could not cross the line to work. If a person went to sleep on August 12th away from their loved ones on the other side of the city, they were stuck there, unable to return for decades. • The fence constructed in 1961 was easy for people to cross so in 1962 a second fence parallel to the first was erected. The area between the fences was cleared to create an empty space where guards could see escape attempts. • By 1965 a concrete wall was added. It stood until a more sophisticated wall was built in 1975. This wall was also accompanied by over 300 watchtowers and thirty bunkers to keep people from crossing the border. • President Ronald Reagan spoke to the people of West Berlin on June 12, 1987. His words were some of the most memorable of his presidency: “General Secretary Gorbachev, if you seek peace, if you seek prosperity for the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, if you seek liberalization: Come here to this gate! Mr. Gorbachev, open this gate! Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!”

It’s best to modify your plans now, before you wind up overcommitted later.GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) A situation that seems simple at first glance needs a more thorough assessment before you give it your OK. Get some solid facts before you act on your suspicions.LEO (July 23 to August 22) Your energy levels are high, allowing you to complete those unfinished tasks before you take on a new project. A social invitation could come from an unlikely source. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) You might think you’re helping, but unless you’re asked for a critique, don’t give it. On another note: A personal relationship might be moving to a higher level.SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A sudden change of heart by a colleague might create some momentary uncertainty. But stay with your original decision and, if necessary, defend it.CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Rely on a combination of your sharp instincts along with some really intense information-gathering to help you make a possibly life-changing decision.AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Instead of worrying if that new person in your life will stay or leave, spend all that energy on strengthening your relationship so it becomes walk-out resistant.PISCES (February 19 to March 20) A sudden financial dry spell could reduce your cash flow almost to a trickle. But by conserving more and spending less, you’ll get through the crunch in good shape.

THE FESTIVAL• Every year, the city hosting the championship organizes events as part of the annual Grey Cup

celebration. Concerts, parties, parades, awards ceremonies, beauty pageants, and festivals are held in the days prior to the game.

This is now often called Canada’s “Grand National Drunk.” The tradition started in 1948. Hundreds of Calgary Stampeders fans wearing full western regalia flocked to Toronto to support their team. They brought chuckwagons and horses, square danced in the streets, and organized a pancake breakfast (a staple of the Calgary Stampede) much to the befuddlement of Torontonians. Calgary won for the first time ever, completing the only undefeated season in the history of Canadian pro football. The boisterous celebrations that followed included Calgary politician Don Mackay riding his horse through the lobby of the Royal York Hotel (an event that will be recreated for the 2012 game.) The Calgary Grey Cup Committee began hosting a pancake breakfast every year after that, and the festival grew from there.

• Incidentally, the Stampeders won this game on the strength of the “sleeper play”, a touchdown scored by Norm Hill after he hid himself from the Ottawa defense by lying down on the sidelines, as if asleep. He received the pass from quarterback Keith Spaith while still on his back.• A 2012 survey found that Canadians consider the Grey Cup to be the most important annual event

to attend. The influx of people from across the country is estimated to have an economic impact of over $120 million for the region hosting the championship game.

THE WIND BOWLIn the 53rd Grey Cup in 1965, the Hamilton Tiger-Cats were up against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, but the weather wasn’t cooperating. With wind speeds up to 64 km/hr (40 mph), the team punting with the wind was at a great advantage. Officials enacted a new rule on the spot: Punts going into the wind would be ruled dead as soon as they were touched, in an enforced Fair Catch rule. Still, all scoring occurred with which ever team was going with the wind. Hamilton won, 22-16.

→ On Nov. 12, 1864, Union Gen. William T. Sherman orders the business district of Atlanta destroyed before he embarks on his famous March to the Sea through Georgia to prevent the Confederates from recovering anything once the Yankees had abandoned it.

→ On Nov. 16, 1901, a low-slung car called the “Torpedo Racer” -- basically a square platform on bicycle wheels -- breaks the world speed record for electric cars in Coney Island, N.Y., by going 1 mile down the straight dirt track in just 63 seconds. That’s about 57 mph. Today the world speed record for an electric vehicle is about 245 mph.

→ On Nov. 14, 1914, in Constantinople, capital of the Ottoman Empire, the religious leader Sheikh-ul-Islam declares an Islamic holy war on behalf of the Ottoman government, urging his Muslim followers to take up arms against Britain, France, Russia, Serbia and Montenegro.

→ On Nov. 15, 1943, Heinrich Himmler makes public an order that Gypsies are to be put on “the same level as Jews and placed in concentration camps.” Himmler was determined to prosecute Nazism racial policies, which dictated the elimination of all races deemed “inferior” and “asocial.”

→ On Nov. 13, 1953, a member of the Indiana Textbook Commission calls for the removal of references to the book “Robin Hood” from textbooks used by the state’s schools. She claimed that Robin Hood was a communist because he robbed the rich and gave it to the poor.

→ On Nov. 17, 1968, the Oakland Raiders score two touchdowns in nine seconds to beat the New York Jets -- and no one sees it. In a debacle which would become known as “Heidi Bowl,” with just 65 seconds left to play, NBC broke away from the game to air its previously scheduled programming, the movie “Heidi.”

→ On Nov. 18, 1987, a fire in a London subway station kills 30 commuters and injures scores of others. At the King’s Cross station in London, people began to smell smoke coming from beneath one of the station’s escalators. It was later revealed that debris and grease had built up under the escalator.

PICKS OF THE WEEK“Brave” (PG) -- Pixar’s latest release goes into a mythical Scottish setting to tell the story of a headstrong, red-haired lass. Merida (voiced by Kelly MacDonald), is a princess who doesn’t want to do the whole princess thing. Merida tries to thwart her own arranged marriage. When that doesn’t work, she tries to use dangerous magic to change her fate. While “Brave” has its strong points, it falls short of Pixar’s greatest hits. The pacing can get on your nerves, for example. The tone can get a little dark. It’s not enough to scare the kiddos or keep them from enjoying the tale. It’s a pleasant departure from the typical princess story with a good helping of slapstick comedy and amazing visuals.

“Savages” (R) -- Oliver Stone directs this summertime crime epic about a trio of pretty, young marijuana moguls who go to war with the big bad Baja Cartel. Chon (Taylor Kitsch, short-haired handsome dude) and Ben (Aaron Johnson, long-haired handsome dude) are living large in Laguna Beach with their shared squeeze, Ophelia (Blake Lively, vacant-looking blonde). Brutal drug lord, Elena (Selma Hayek) wants a piece of their pot profits, so she sends in her minion, Lado (Benicio Del Toro.) Stone knows how to keep you watching. Hayek’s evil narco-empress is chilling and also very hot. However, Lively was given voice-over duty, and her voice and the things she says soon become tiresome. You may wish you didn’t want to keep watching.

“The Watch” (PG-13) -- Four suburban guys (Vince Vaughn, Ben Stiller, Jonah Hill and Richard Ayoade) looking for an excuse to hang out form a neighborhood watch and wind up in a showdown with alien invaders. It’s a simply silly concept that could pass or fail based on the comedic riffing of the stars. It’s a fail. The jokes are lazy, the script is tedious. Whether it was the

acting or the direction, the funny men just aren’t at their best. There’s no room for wit or originality to blossom when the script is overflowing with anatomy jokes.

“Pixar Short Films Collection 2” -- As much as Pixar has a great record with feature films, it also knows how to put a lot of heart and art into a featurette. This collection of animated shorts includes “La Luna,” “Day and Night” and “Presto.” Each one is about five minutes of high-quality animation. The shorts were released with major Pixar films, but this collection puts them on one disc and adds value. The collection also includes older shorts from Pixar’s animators and creative directors, as well as information about how they got their start.

Cranberry Graham SquaresWhile cranberry sauce is always appropriate, why not share this cranberry-studded recipe this season? After all, it won’t be long before these ruby delights won’t be anywhere to be found.

Pour mixture evenly over graham crackers. Refrigerate while preparing cranberry sauce.2. In a medium saucepan, combine dry cook-and-serve pudding mix, cranberry juice cocktail, remaining 1/2 cup water and cranberries. Evenly spoon cooled mixture over set filling.3. Spread whipped topping evenly over cranberry mixture. Crush remaining 3 graham crackers into fine crumbs. Evenly sprinkle crumbs over top. Refrigerate for at least 1 hour. Serves 8.

GREY CUP (continued):• In 1947, the Grey Cup was on display with many other trophies at the Toronto Argonaut Rowing Club when the building caught fire. Many of the other trophies were lost entirely or damaged beyond repair, but when the shelf holding the Grey Cup collapsed into the flames, the trophy caught on a nail when it fell, saving it from certain doom in the flames. It received only minor damage.• The Grey Cup has been stolen twice. In 1967 it was taken from the Hamilton Tiger-Cats as a prank, and in December, 1969 it was stolen from the offices of the Ottawa Rough Riders at Lansdowne Park. The thieves demanded a ransom for return of the trophy, but the CFL refused to pay and announced they planned to replace it with a duplicate instead. A couple of months later, the police received an anonymous tip that led them to a pay phone. The pay phone contained a note and a key which led them to a locker in Union Station. In the locker they found the undamaged trophy. The thieves were never caught. By the time the original trophy was returned, the CFL had already commissioned a replica for a total cost of $550. The original trophy now resides at the Hall of Fame except for when it’s presented to the winning team.• In 1984, Winnipeg Blue Bombers general manager Paul Robson accidentally forgot the Grey Cup, leaving it behind following a celebration at the Winnipeg Arena. When he rushed back to find it, the trophy was still sitting right where he left it, surrounded by a dark empty stadium.

As one of the few shelters with the ability to take cats that test positive for Feline Aids (FIV), we have had the distinct pleasure of coming to know hundreds of these amazing animals over the years. FIV sounds much scarier than it actually is; positive cats can live long, healthy lives. FIV is not contagious to humans

or any other species… just cats. So positive cats must be either the only cat in a strictly indoors-only home, or they should live with another positive cat. All of our FIV cats are candidates for our Permanent Foster program so drop by during our Open House hours (Sat and Sun between noon and 2:00pm) to learn a little more about FIV and to meet some very special animals. Stranger - When Stranger initially arrived at Katie’s Place, she was shy and apprehensive. Now that she is more comfortable, Stranger is anything but a stranger! She’s a big girl - not overweight, just hearty - with a friendly, gentle and calm demeanor. She draws you to her just by making eye contact with her large, expressive eyes. While she make look sad, Miss Stranger is a sweet, affectionate

girl who would make someone a wonderful feline friend. Doc Holiday – Doc was trapped in a large colony of cats and while all the other cats were welcome back to their original location, Doc was not. We were told he was a fighter which, while entirely possible, is so hard to believe based on the sweet, calm gentlemen we have come to know that the shelter. However, Doc was left unfixed which could not only explain his possible need to fight for territory, but also how he contracted FIV in the first place as fighting amongst unneutered males is the most common way to contract it. Neutering has removed the need for confrontation and replaced it with a need to snuggle in your lap.

• Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood is still showing, in fact, it is the longest-running program on public television. • President George W. Bush presented the Presidential Medal of Freedom to Mr. Rogers in 2002, recognizing his contribution to the well-being of children and his long career in public television that demonstrated kindness, compassion and learning. The medal is the highest civilian award given in the United States. • In his show, when Mr. Rogers

would change his shoes and put on his sweater, he was showing skills as well as routines that children needed to learn. He always put his shoes away and hung up his clothes, showing responsibilities that they needed to learn. • The type of sweater that Mr. Rogers wore was a cardigan. Typically they button or zip down the front. Even though he made the sweater popular for his television audience, it had been around for centuries. The sweater was named after the 7th Earl of Cardigan,

James Thomas Brudenell, a British military commander. A cardigan sweater is normally made by machine or hand knitted from wool. • Fishermen of France and the British Isles were probably the first people to use cardigans. The heavy, hand-knitted wool was helpful in keeping them warm out on the water on gloomy days. • The Aran Islands off the west coast of Ireland at the mouth of Galway Bay on the Atlantic Ocean, an area where fishing and farming have

been closely connected for centuries, are known for their wool sweaters. The outdoor workers needed warm coverings to keep warm during North Atlantic winters. • The sweaters were made with many stitches that became associated with particular Irish clans. Aran sweaters have been knitted since the late 1800s and are still in demand today. While in the past they were made by hand, machines are used for most today. A true hand-stitched Aran sweater is quite valuable.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: We’re planning to adopt a puppy in the next few weeks. Is there anything we should do to prepare our house to welcome our new dog when he or she arrives? -- Clarice H., New Orleans

DEAR CLARICE: First of all, congratulations! Adopting a pet from the shelter is a great choice. Second, there are many things you can do ahead of time to make your house dog-friendly. The shelter may have some information to guide you as well, but here are some basic things to add to your list.--”Pet-proof ” your house. In much the same way as parents need to childproof their house, pet owners need to make dangerous items difficult to access. Things that can be chewed on, that can splinter or break into small pieces, should be kept off the floor and off things that are puppy height (like the coffee table).--Set up a living area for your puppy, in a comfortable spot out of the way of foot traffic. Place its pet bed there, along with chew toys.--Have your dog’s leash, collar and other items ready and waiting. You’ll want to purchase these after you’ve chosen your puppy but before bringing it home.--Set up a file among your household papers specifically to hold your dog’s adoption information, shot record, registration and other pet-related data. You also should keep a copy of these papers in a separate location.--Include your new pet in family emergency planning. If you have an evacuation or shelter-in-place kit, add dog food, treats and other essential items.

Most natural blondes also have blue eyes, which aren’t as good as brown eyes at shielding out light. This means that blondes tend to be more easily blinded by the headlights of oncoming cars.

Q: I love MTV’s original comedy “Awkward.” I missed some episodes of season two. Is it on DVD yet? Also, where there be a third season? A: You’re in luck on both counts. Aside from being able to watch full episodes on hulu.com and mtv.com, seasons one and two are available on DVD. The show has been granted a super-size season three, which will consist of 20 episodes instead of the previous 12 episodes each of the

previous two seasons. Look for season three to premiere in summer 2013.

***Q: I just heard about the death of one of my favorite directors, Tony Scott. I couldn’t find any information on the definite cause or reason for his death. Do you know what happened? -- Felix S., Vancouver, British ColumbiaA: The results of Tony’s autopsy were recently released, with the cause of death being multiple blunt-force injuries, which were sustained when he jumped off a Los Angeles bridge on Aug. 19. The official ruling is suicide, as no foul play was suspected or discovered. There was also no evidence of an inoperable brain tumor -- as some sources were citing as the reason he killed himself -- putting to rest those rumors that his family vehemently denied

from the get-go.Tony, who was 68 at the time of his death, had recently announced his intent to develop a “Top Gun” sequel, and was with Tom Cruise just days prior to his death scouting locations for the movie. There is no word yet on whether the movie will be made without Tony.

***Q: “Assassin’s Creed” is one of my favorite video games, and my roommate heard that it’s going to be made into a movie. Is that true? -- Douglas W., via e-mailA: Development of a big-screen version of the popular video game is moving forward, with Michael Fassbender set to star as Desmond Miles, a man who comes from a long line of assassins but tries to lie low and maintain a more common lifestyle as a bartender. Since it’s still early in the

development process, there’s no word on co-stars or a release date. However, I can tell you that it will be shot in 3-D.

***Q: My husband and I are curious as to what happened to Lisa, who was one of the “Ice Road Truckers” on the History Channel last year. We’re hoping she didn’t crash. -- Bonnie and George H., via e-mailA: Lisa Kelly is alive and well, and taking a year off. Producer Thom Beers told a group of reporters: “We offered her a contract to return, and she chose not to. (We’d) love to have her, (but) she’s taking a year off. The thing we liked about her more than anyone else -- she’s the one person of them all who showed real fear. I wish her luck, and I wish she was back.”

◆ Medication labels can fade, so when you get yours, put a piece of clear tape over the instructions. This way, you’ll always be able to read the instructions.

◆ “During the holidays (the height of baking season for me), I keep a large plastic saltshaker filled with flour and a bit of dry rice. The rice helps the flour to shake out without getting clumped up, and I use it to dust cake pans, rolling pins, kneading boards, etc.” -- W.F. in Canada

◆ “One of the household cleaners I prefer comes in a spray bottle, and it’s on the expensive side. I make sure to get all of the liquid out by adding some regular glass marbles to the bottle. The marbles displace the liquid, ensuring it finds the bottom of the sprayer’s suction tube.” -- T.H. in Mississippi

◆ “Stack hockey pucks in the holes of a cardboard soda six-pack carrier. Tell your coach. And to keep them bouncy, store them in your freezer (as long as your mom says it’s OK).” -- Eric, via e-mail

◆ Keep the fog off your glasses by cleaning them with shaving cream. It will prevent mist-ups when you come in from the cold.

◆ Save your citrus peels and dry them to use for kindling in your fire. They contain flammable oils, and they smell pretty good, too.

Punched-Tin Can Candle Holders It’s time to start saving tin cans for this gift-giving idea for the holidays. Your eco-

friendly school-age kids not only will like the recycling aspect of this punched tin tealight candle holder, but they’ll also have a great time pounding nails into the tin and ice to create an imaginative design.Think Thanksgiving home decor, too. Choose fall-themed images to create, like a maple leaf, gourd and pilgrim ship to brighten your Thanksgiving centerpiece. Here’s the stuff you’ll need for one candleholder:--Plain tin can with label removed and all rough edges pinched flat and smooth. I use the smooth-sided 11-ounce Geisha brand mandarin orange cans for this project because they don’t have multiple ridges or grooves.--Nail--Hammer--Water--Towel--Permanent black felt-tip marker --Thin ribbon to decorate the outside of the can. --Household glue

--Tealight candle

Here’s the fun:1. Fill the can near to the top with water and place in your freezer to freeze.2. When frozen solid, remove, wipe off frost on the outside of the can and dot design on the outside opposite the seam using the permanent marker. You may wish to draw the outline of a leaf or pumpkin for Thanksgiving. For December holidays

draw a pine tree, holly, star, bell, menorah, 2013 or other festive holiday symbol. Choose shapes that are easy to create dot to dot. Leave space near the top rim and base for adding ribbon.3. Place the can on its side on the towel. Carefully hammer out the design by positioning the nail on each of the dots and hammering it through the tin until it hits the ice. (The ice prevents the nail

from bending the tin,) Continue punching holes until you have completed your pattern.4. Run warm water over can until ice melts. Remove ice and dry can.5. Attach ribbon to the can with glue. Set candle in the center of the can and light.Note: Adults should be present when lighting candles.

HOW TO LOSE WEIGHT, KEEP IT OFF, LOOK YOUNGER AND LIVE LONGER

Change your mind to change your eating choices

Neuroscience has proven that thoughts get materialized in the brain and become part of you. Your thoughts define who you are, and also influence your decision making. If we apply this neuroscience principle to nutrition, we could say that in the brain there are encoded thinking paths of how you think about food. These thinking paths determine your food choices. Think about the following, someone who is born in Japan has different food choices than someone who is born in a western country like Canada or the USA. The SAD (Standard American Diet) consists mostly of high portions of animal products, low portions of fruits and vegetables, as well as processed and packaged foods. The thinking paths on western culture are around these foods choices, unfortunately these food choices are causing obesity and many other health concerns. We need to change the way we think about food to be able to make better eating choices, improve our health and lose weight. How do we change our eating

choices? Neuroscience also has proven that you can change thinking paths encoded in your brain and transform them into better and positive behaviours. When I work with my clients on losing weight, we also work on changing the way they think about food, which allows them to make better food choices. If you change the way you think about food, you will change the way you eat and therefore you will have different results. In other words if you are convince that the way you are eating is not giving you the health and weight you desire, then change the way you think about food and you will enjoy excellent health and manage your weight.Change your mind to change your eating choices, stop dieting, lose weight, keep it off, look younger and live longer. As a natural nutritionist and a life coach, I have helped clients to change the way they think about food to make better food choices and as a result their health improved and they lost weight. As I mentioned on our previous article, losing weight should not be the main goal, it should be a pleasant and a normal by-product of the road to the primary goal: Great Health.

Give me a call. Let us work together changing the way you think about food to improve your health and lose any extra pounds. You deserve it.

How to keep fit and injury free(NC)—After a tough day at work, many people think there is nothing better than heading out for a run, joining a game of basketball with friends, or hitting the gym for a cardio or spin class.

The enjoyment, relaxation and health benefits of recreational sports are well documented and millions of us participate in a variety of sports and fitness activities each day. However, each year more than 1.2 million Canadians are sidelined from their favourite sports activities because of injuries that may have been prevented.

“Although recreational sport enthusiasts are not committed to a rigorous daily training regime, in some ways they are more prone to sports-related injuries than serious athletes as they often don’t invest the time or money, to ensure they are wearing proper footwear,” says Ryan Robinson, a Canadian certified pedorthist and president of the Pedorthic Association of Canada. “Buying supportive, stable footwear and being fitted for an orthotic if any foot issues are present, will keep recreational sport enthusiasts off the sidelines and enjoying the activities they love.”

Recreational sports enthusiasts who are experiencing lower limb and foot pain should consult a Canadian certified pedorthist, an orthotic and footwear expert. The pedorthist will conduct a biomechanical exam and ensure they are fitted with the right footwear for their sports activity. The following tips will also help prevent recreational sports injuries and alleviate pain if injuries do occur:

• Purchase shoes that are appropriate for your activity and your foot.

• Select a stable shoe with a sturdy heel counter (the back of a shoe that controls motion) and stable midsoles.

• Slowly increase activity so lower limbs have time to properly adapt to new activity levels.

• If an injury occurs, rest, use ice and ask your physician for a referral to a pedorthist, who will advise if a custom foot orthotic will help the injury heal and put you back in the game.

More information on preventing recreational sports injuries can be found at www.pedorthic.ca.
