This week, Tidbits looks a few lesser-known celebrations. • January 11 is officially Amelia Earhart Day, but not because that was the day she disappeared. It marks the date she became the first person to fly solo across the Pacific from Honolulu to Oakland, California in 1935. It was two years later on June 1 that she and her navigator Fred Noonan departed Miami on a 29,000-mile (46,671 km) journey, attempting to fly around the world. They were just 7,000 miles (11,265 km) from completing the goal when radio transmission ceased and the two were never seen again. • January 7 is Harlem Globetrotters’ Day, remembering the first game the famous basketball team played on that day in 1927. They traveled 48 miles west from their Chicago home to play a game in Hinckley, Illinois. The team was the brainstorm of Chicago businessman Abe Saperstein during a time when only whites were permitted to play professional basketball. The team had nothing to do with the New York City borough of Harlem. Abe chose the name to emphasize the team’s ethnic heritage. The Globetrotters didn’t even play their first game in Harlem until the late 1960s! Since their creation, they have played in front of 120 million fans in more than 115 countries. turn the page for more!

604 916 4309ARIES (March 21-April 19): The mind is a terrible thing to waste. Frequent phone calls can interrupt concentration. Plan ahead; arrange for a period of peace and quiet in the upcoming week to master a new skill or study.TAURUS (April 20-May 20): You shot an arrow into the air, it comes to earth you know not where. If you commence a serious study or research business techniques in the week ahead, it may snowball into something valuable.GEMINI (May 21-June 20): If you put your “get-up-and-go” on full throttle, you can go far in the week ahead. Be a mover and a shaker in the business world to receive recognition and attention. Pursuing amorous fancies is futile.CANCER (June 21-July 22): Put on your thinking cap. Other people challenge you to think things through this week. Develop a plan of action for the future. Rather than acting on every passing whim, consider the big picture.LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Sharpen your wits to remain on the cutting edge. The people you meet in the week ahead might not remain in your life very long, but could offer powerful insights and open your eyes to exciting possibilities.VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Forget your fear of heights. Honesty is not only the best policy, but the only policy that will get you up the ladder of success in the week ahead. Investigate and discover the facts and take time to study.LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Receive rave reviews. Start any matter that needs to receive widespread publicity to succeed or where your people skills can be used to your advantage. Remain open to progressive concepts this week. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Polish your public image in the week ahead. What you think of yourself is more important than what other people think of you. Your resourcefulness and flair at work can bring you attention or recognition.SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): Sometimes the teacher learns the most from the students. During the upcoming week, you may understand more when called upon to show someone how to perform a task or explain a concept.CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Don’t let what you can’t do stop you from doing what you can do. In the week ahead, you will be able to visualize future possibilities. Your evaluation of people and potential is better than usual.AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): It’s not what you know, but whom you know that counts. Form alliances with powerful people this week, and fame and fortune could rub off on you. A special someone could show extra affection.PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Sail with the current, not against it. The latest news, the most recent fads, and most innovative technology may attract you in the week ahead. You may be easily distracted if paid a compliment by an admirer.

Together We Can!

10 Tips to Kick the Sugar HabitThe average North American consumes more than 100 pounds of sugar a year! From that number it sounds like everyone’s polishing off a bag of cookies every day, but the truth is we are consuming many foods with a high sugar content that may not always be obvious. Many foods are deceiving and often we have no idea that they are loaded with that much sugar. It is time to get the skinny on sugar packed foods and learn how to dramatically decrease your consumption of white death (aka sugar)! The following are ten simple steps to adopt into your life to take one step towards optimal health.

1. Stop adding it to foods. This is the easiest way to immediately reduce the amount of sugar you are consuming. The biggest targets are: cereal, coffee and tea.

2. Don’t be fooled by “healthy sugar” disguises. Brown sugar, turbinado sugar, raw sugar … it’s all pretty much the same thing as far as your body is concerned. Reach for healthier proven alternatives such as stevia, agave nectar (only in small amounts), xylitol, date sugar or brown rice syrup.

3. Beware of artificial sweeteners. Unfortunately, they can increase cravings for sugar and carbohydrates. In addition, they can also deplete the body’s stores of chromium, a nutrient crucial for blood-sugar metabolism. Aspartame is one of most deadly toxins that we can consume. It is considered to be a “cumulative” toxin which means that even if you only have it a few times a week, it will build up in your body. It has the ability to cross the blood brain barrier and breaks down into formaldehyde.

4. Don’t be fooled by “fat-free” snacks. Fat-free does not mean calorie-free. In addition, most of these snacks are loaded with sugar which turns into fat in your body.

HOW TO LOSE WEIGHT, KEEP IT OFF, LOOK YOUNGER AND LIVE LONGER

Change your mind to change your eating choices

Neuroscience has proven that thoughts get materialized in the brain and become part of you. Your thoughts define who you are, and also influence your decision making. If we apply this neuroscience principle to nutrition, we could say that in the brain there are encoded thinking paths of how you think about food. These thinking paths determine your food choices. Think about the following, someone who is born in Japan has different food choices than someone who is born in a western country like Canada or the USA. The SAD (Standard American Diet) consists mostly of high portions of animal products, low portions of fruits and vegetables, as well as processed and packaged foods. The thinking paths on western culture are around these foods choices, unfortunately these food choices are causing obesity and many other health concerns. We need to change the way we think about food to be able to make better eating choices, improve our health and lose weight. How do we change our eating choices? Neuroscience also has proven that you can change thinking paths encoded in your brain and transform them into better and positive behaviours. When I work with my clients on losing weight, we also work on changing the way they think about food, which allows them to make better food choices. If you change the way you think about food, you will change the way you eat and therefore you will have different results. In other words if you are convince that the way you are eating is not giving you the health and weight you desire, then change the way you think about food and you will enjoy excellent health and manage your weight.Change your mind to change your eating choices, stop dieting, lose weight, keep it off, look younger and live longer. As a natural nutritionist and a life coach, I have helped clients to change the way they think about food to make better food choices and as a result their health improved and they lost weight. As I mentioned on our previous article, losing weight should not be the main goal, it should be a pleasant and a normal by-product of the road to the primary goal: Great Health.

Louise is still at the shelter awaiting her forever home. She is a senior, she is black, she has diabetes and she is not demanding. Every day Louise is overlooked and every day she waits patiently for someone to notice how sweet and loving she is. Because she is a diabetic Katie’s Place would be more than happy to adopt her out as a permanent foster, and in this way cover all her medical costs. We would hate to see this wonderful little girl spend the last years of her life in a hectic shelter. She needs a sunny window sill or a soft chair to curl up on. She doesn’t need much but will give you her whole self

in return. Please come and meet Louisa. She would be the best New Year resolution you could ever make. Klaire has been at Katie’s Place for far too long. She was adopted

for some time and then returned to us due to no fault of her own. She is a very quiet little girl. Like Louise she is easy to miss because she is not a striking beauty and because she does not demand attention. We often find Klaire curled up in a hidey hole far away from the noise and activity. Yet if you reach out to her she will gladly accept any loving you will give. She has a sad face and has lost any spark that was once in her eyes. The return to the shelter seems to have left her depressed. Like Louise she just needs a tiny part of your house to relax in and in return you will have all her love and attention.

Q: My 7-year-old Dachshund-mix licks at everything - her furniture, her bed, and she even licks leaves during walks. I believe poor Goldie was kept in a crate for many hours as a puppy. Do you have any insights on her behavior? A: Dr. Ilana Reisner, a veterinary behaviorist in Philadelphia, PA, explains that persistent licking can be coined a “displacement behavior,” sort of letting off steam, as an outlet for anxiety, much as nail biting can be for people. However, since your dog seems so intent, more might be going on.” One determination of seriousness is to assess if your dog can easily be distracted from licking and redircted to another behavior, such as coming when you call her.Lots of folks might jump to the idea that Goldie has a compulsive disorder, and certainly that possibility exists. However, Reisner says to first rule out a medical explanation (which most likely explains the licking), particularly a possible gastro-intestinal issue, or even chronic tonsillitis. Scoping with biopsies will rule out the stomach issue and visually looking at throat will rule out the other. Crazy as it sounds, a food allergy is also possible.Reisner suggests you keep a log to determine what Goldie licks and when to determine if there’s any pattern. This information might help a veterinarian. Meanwhile, you can do no harm to enhance your dog’s enrichment. Feed Goldie from various Kong or food dispensing toys. You might even stuff food inside toys and then hide them around the house, so she can sniff them out. Also, take Goldie for daily walks on-leash, not only for exercise but also to sniff what’s new in the ‘hood. A compulsive behavior is a diagnosis of exclusion, meaning that after everything else is ruled out, it is considered. If this ends up being the diagnosis, a psycho-pharmaceutical might help, as can a referral to a veterinary behaviorist.

“TAKEN 2”: It’s a case of role reversal as ex-CIA man Bryan Mills has to be saved by his daughter in the sequel to Liam Neeson’s action hit that redefined his career. The espionage veteran and his ex-wife (Famke Janssen) are kidnapped by a vengeful relative of one of the abductors Mills killed in the course of rescuing his offspring (Maggie Grace) ... and the rescuee has to turn rescuer to save her parents. As with the first round, it’s fun to watch a confident and gritty Neeson even the score, and the overseas locale - Istanbul this time - adds much. DVD extras: “making-of ” documentary; alternate ending. ***

“TO ROME WITH LOVE”: Woody Allen has had considerable success using foreign locales, certainly recently with “Midnight in Paris,” and he takes that approach again with this enjoyable comedy that set several stories in Italy. Writer-director Allen himself plays an opera director who unexpectedly starts a new chapter, while Jesse Eisenberg (“The Social Network”) plays a young man who falls for his girlfriend’s friend (Ellen Page, “Juno”) as an architect (Alec Baldwin) advises him. Judy Davis, Alison Pill (“The Newsroom”), Penelope Cruz - who was helped to an Oscar by Allen in “Vicky Cristina Barcelona - and fellow Oscar winner Roberto Benigni also star. DVD extra: “making-of ” documentary. *** “WON’T BACK DOWN”: This earnest drama benefits from strong performances by Maggie Gyllenhaal, as a parent who worries her daughter isn’t getting the best educational experience, and Viola Davis, as a teacher who puts her career on the line to improve standards at her school. There’s no doubt that real-life instructors will be a natural, and naturally satisfied, audience for the film. Holly Hunter and Rosie Perez also star. DVD extras: theatrical trailer; two “making-of ” documentaries; audio commentary by director Daniel Barnz; deleted scenes. *** “THE INTOUCHABLES”: Based on a true story, this seriocomic French film by writer-directors Olivier Nakache and Eric Toledano earned international raves for its two stars ... veteran actor Francois Cluzet as a rich aristocrat suddenly incapacitated while paragliding, and Omar Sy (who won the Cesar, France’s equivalent of the Oscar, as best actor for this) as the much younger and more street-wise fellow hired to care for him. Though others are in the cast, the picture very much belongs to those actors, and their unlikely yet fabulous teamwork justifies it. *** “THE POSSESSION”: It’s time again to look in the Yellow Pages under “Exorcist,” as a youngster falls prey to an ancient demon in this allegedly fact-inspired melodrama that benefits from having Kyra Sedgwick and Jeffrey Dean Morgan (“Magic City”) as the victim’s parents. The girl (Natasha Calis, “The Firm”) buys an antique box at a yard sale, and the spirit it contains soon has a drastic effect on her and those around her. Sam Raimi is among the film’s producers. DVD extras: “making-of ” documentary; audio commentary by director Ole Bornedal and writers Juliet Snowden and Stiles White. *** “LED ZEPPELIN: GOOD TIMES, BAD TIMES - THE ULTIMATE COLLECTION”: As Jack Black noted recently when surviving members Jimmy Page, Robert Plant and John Paul Jones received the Kennedy Center Honors, it only took Led Zeppelin nine studio albums to cement its place among the all-time-great groups in music. This five-DVD documentary details how it happened by tracing the history of the band (which also included drummer John Bonham), expectedly with a generous dose of the related music. ***

You can have a positive impact on human rights

(NC)—One of Amnesty International’s greatest strengths as a movement has been the ability to mobilize communities to apply pressure on powerful governments and corporations to stop or prevent human rights violations. Every voice counts. Here are some ways you can make a difference:

Take action right now! With so many issues happening all around the world, sign a petition on one of the many human rights issues facing communities around the world.

Become a member with your donation today. We are a movement of people. Each time a new person joins, Amnesty’s light shines brighter on the injustices occurring at different places around the world.

Join a group. Together, the members of our groups take action, reach out to new communities and educate the public about how they can make human rights a reality for all.

Attend an event. Events are a great way to get to educate yourself and others about human rights and meet other like minded people in your community who want to take action together. Yoga Day on April 27, 2013, held at a local yoga studio or your own living room is a good example.

Volunteer. Our network of volunteers have the chance to try almost anything—from phone banking, writing letters and organizing a group to responding to a crisis, leading a lobby effort or carrying out our campaigns—we invite you to explore the diverse volunteer opportunities available to you around the country.

Write for Rights. Join over 22,000 Canadians in the world’s largest letter writing event on behalf of political prisoners, human rights defenders and others whose rights are being violated by governments or corporations.

Further information is available by emailing [email protected] or toll-free at 1-800-266-3789 and by mail at Amnesty International, 312 Laurier Ave East, Suite 300, Ottawa, K1N 1H9.
