Movement: How the character moves onto stage/into
position.
Do they:
SAUNTER, walk, JUMP, bounce,
SKIP, run, SPRINT, wobble,
SLOUCH, jog, DASH, slither,
BOUND, meander, SPRINT, plod,
STRUT, dawdle, SWAGGER?
PLUS ADVERB (describe HOW).
No-one just ‘walks’ or ‘runs’. There needs to be a description behind
it. This is usually linked to emotion. Look closely at the stage
directions or previous lines; they should give you clues.
Always give reasons: Why is a character moving in a certain way?
What does it reveal about the character in this particular section?
What has made the character move/look in this way? Why are they
there in the first place? Who are they talking to – does this give you
a reason for movement?

Read through the list. If you don’t know what one means, look it up. Highlight
specific adverbs you could use to describe the different characters in 100. Use
different highlighters for different characters.

Only write about the scene in the exam question. Make sure you work
methodically through the scene and use a quote for every acting
point you make. Remember the question asks ‘how would you…’ so
your answer should be in first person: ‘I would…’.

Character motivation: the character’s reasons for doing what they are
doing. What is the character’s objective in this scene? Think in
terms of status and who the character wants to impress or how
important/crucial they are to this scene. Also think about the audience’s
response to the character.
Voice: how the character says the line. Think about different voice
terminology: pitch, pace/tempo, pause, emphasis, volume, tone.
Movement: where the character goes on stage during the scene and
how they get there. Think about the quality of the movement: slowly,
briskly etc. and what kind of movement: walk, run, crawl, saunter etc.
Gesture: what actions the character does during the scene – arm/head
movements, facial expressions.
Interaction: how the character responds physically or talks to other
characters in the scene. Think about status and the relationship
between the characters on stage in the scene.

DESIGN: COSTUME Describe a suitable costume for the actor playing………………in this section.
Remember: Do not leave anything out and give reasons for everything.
Period: when the play is set / when you wish to set the play (justify)
Garments: Work from the top down and don’t leave anything out, including
accessories (glasses, bag, hat). What condition are the garments in? What
material are they made of? What colour are they? Why?
Hair: Style? Colour? Why?
Make-up: Foundation? Powder? Blusher? Lipstick? Colours? Why? All
characters wear some make-up.
Elements of the character: The reasons you give for all of the above things
should explain how the items emphasise elements of the character.
Make-up Masterclass:
Foundation – a skin coloured base which you put over your
whole face to even out skin tone and colour.
Powder – a skin coloured powder which you put over
foundation to soak up any sweat and stop your face shining
under stage lights.
Blusher – a pink/brown colour that you put over cheeks to
emphasise cheekbones and give a healthy glow.
Eye-shadow/liner – a colour on your eye-lids that opens up your
eyes. Eye-liner can be used to make a character appear dark and
mysterious/ghostly.
Mascara - a dark colour that you brush onto your eye lashes to
make them longer and open up your eyes.
Lipstick – a colour that you put onto your lips to emphasise
them and make them look pretty!
