Thanks to gains in knowl- edge made by researchers here in Canada and around the world, we are already beginning to “make cancer his- tory”. Investing in the best research has led to tremendous progress against cancer. We know more about what causes can- cer, how it develops, how best to treat it, and how we can improve the quality of life of cancer patients, survivors, families and caregivers. Today, 62% of people diagnosed with cancer survive their dis- ease. In the 1960s, the survival rate was 1 in 3. In 2008-2009, the Canadian Cancer Society funded more than $49 million in leading-edge research projects across the country. As the largest national char- itable funder of cancer research in Canada, we are leading the way to- wards our goal: creating a world where no one has to be afraid of cancer. Knowledge is power Movie Night - Host a movie night screening a popular new release or a classic movie and charge admission. For fun have a mini conces- sion stand where everything is only 50 cents. Friday Fun Day - If you’re in a management position at a company, make an executive de- cision that Friday will be fun day! Let employees wear flip-flops and silly hats and have a water balloon fight at lunch time. Easter Egg hunt, your group sets up an easter egg hunt for the kids, charging $1 a child. a few small prizes and a great day for all. Yard Sale: why not host a yard sale? collect all that unneeded stuff around your house, con- tact friends and family and before you know it you'll have a fantastic yard sale full of all kinds of wonderful trinkets. from experience, be sure to charge low prices, and remind people every- thing is for charity, very often you will receive a $20 payment for a $0.50 item.. This gives new team members two weeks to fundraise before the off-line fundraising deadline of May 31st. Team captains should have their registration sheets and $10 fee into Angela Clair by May 15th. Even easier, register the paperless way - ON LINE! Whenever there is a at least one person who has filled out a registra- tion sheet and paid their fee, their team is automatically put on our Kentville Relay Website! Go to www.cancer.ca/relay pick Nova Scotia from the drop down tab and thenclick on Kentville's Relay; your team will be listed there. You will be asked for your $10 fee via a secure transaction using your credit card. This is a great way to also check on the on-line progress of other teams We are always here to help.
