Survivor Spotlight

Julie, a single mother of two sons and computer

teacher at Gunstream Elementary School in

Frisco, was not feeling well. In early 2010, she

visited her doctor, explained her symptoms and

was treated for pneumonia. After two months,

Julie was still not feeling well and went for a

second opinion. The X-rays revealed spots on

her lungs and following more extensive testing,

Julie was diagnosed with lung, liver and colon

cancer. In April 2010, Julie was given 1-1/2

months to live.

Julie began the excruciating journey of chemotherapy treatments. She

would drive to her appointments and sit in her car outside of North Texas

Cancer Center and cry. If it wasn’t for her love of her two young boys and

her prayers to the Lord, she would have not of made it through. Julie made a

trip to Durant, Oklahoma to visit with Pastor Andrew Wommack (known for

his healing prayer ministry). He placed his hands on her and prayed with her.

Many patients who have endured the same treatments Julie did have chosen

to stop and opt for hospice care. Not Julie, she fought her way through. Be-

cause she refuses to miss her son’s football games, she often has to lie down

on the field.

Survivor Spotlight, cont

Having taught at Gunstream Elementary for 9

years, Julie’s impact is clear. She has not

missed one day of school since her treatments

began. If needed, she Skypes from the oncology office into her classroom

so she doesn’t miss valuable teaching time with her kids. To show their

support, Gunstream teachers and staff wear their “Team Frame” t-shirts

every Monday.

In December, her students asked a local radio station to help make a

memorable Christmas for their teacher. The station, KLTY-FM, received

more than 380 letters for Julie. The Gunstream staff along with KLTY

surprised Julie with an assembly in her name. The KLTY representative

presented Julie with thousands of dollars for her insurance deductibles, a

free trip for her and the boys, as well as months of rent payments.

Julie’s experience has inspired her to help others. She is forming “His

Foundation” which is an organization for Single Parents in Need Battling

Cancer (SPIN-BC). There will soon be a website available with a prayer

line and online resources for single parents who are battling cancer.

Now on maintenance treatments every other Tuesday, Julie has beaten

the odds and is now mentoring others who are facing the same treat-

ments that she went through. Julie is an amazing woman full of love, God’s

will and strength. She is an true inspiration to all those who surround her.

We look forward to walking with Julie and “Team Frame” at Relay For Life

Frisco this year!

Frosty 5K

Ohhhh the weather outside….well, it wasn’t exactly frightful but it was a little chilly!

Thank you to the Relay Committee Members who braved the cold and wind to participate

in the Frisco Frosty 5K and Merry Mile on Saturday, December 11.

I ran the Frosty 5 K and all I got was this awesome t-shirt!

In November, several members of the Frisco committee

met in Irving for the very first Relay Workshop! The

Workshop was led by the North Texas Regional Council,

which is made up of volunteers from around the Re-

gion. Event Chairs from all Regional Relay For Life events

met for a Retreat Friday evening. They enjoyed dinner

and brainstorming with other chairs in their area. There

were also breakout sessions to discuss in detail the roles

and responsibilities of the Event Chair.

On Saturday, other members of the committee joined in

the Workshop to discuss their responsibilities for each

committee. The Teams Committee met to discuss new and fresh ideas, including changes to the

team sizes. The Online Committee met to discuss new features that will be made available on

each Relay’s websites. The Accounting Committee met to be trained on the new online ac-

counting system that will be used in 2011. And, the Sponsorship Committee met to uncover new

ways to approach potential sponsors.

Relay Workshop was a huge success to make sure

that those committee members with roles and re-

sponsibilities that require time commitments earlier

in the year are properly trained and have the tools

they need to carry out those duties.

The North Texas Regional Council did a wonderful job

of helping each Committee identify their strengths,

areas for improvement, and help solidify their focus

going into the new year!

Don’t forget to “Friend” Us on Facebook!

The Relay For Life Frisco 2010 Event Video is now available on Facebook!

The Facebook Fundraising Application has been turned off and now redirects to

RFL.org in prep for 2011. For anyone that used the application to fundraise via

Facebook, your totals will no longer display. With the redesign of our Facebook

pages, the fundraising application can no longer be placed within a box on the left

side of a Facebook page and must be moved to a tab. For those that don’t know how

to move an application from a box to a tab, a short “how to” video will walk you

through the process, http://screenr.com/a90.
