The lending libraries beat out Bill Gates at No. 25 and Bruce Springsteen and Jon Bon Jovi at No. 50. Today, there are more than 16,000 lending libraries in 55 countries. The Little Free Library phenomenon was started by Rotarian Todd Bol.

Randolph Rotary continues to build libraries in our community one book at time. Each week, we donate a book to Randolph County Partnership for Children. We also put dictionaries into the hands of third graders each year.

One of our goals for the upcoming year is to reach more children in Randolph County through our literacy efforts. With that idea in mind, we would like to provide 5th graders a book entitled Your Greatest Power. This book has inspired many people to consider their power of choice. Shelby Stephenson, the Poet Laureate of North Carolina, will make his first Randolph County appearance at our June 3 meeting. Shelby Stephenson, of Benson, is the newest Poet Laureate inductee to the North Carolina Literary Hall of Fame and was installed by Governor Pat McCrory in a recent ceremony at the State Capitol in Raleigh that was heralded as a major event. He will serve as ambassador to promote North Carolina writers and champion projects that will include writing workshops in assisted living and retirement communities as well as raising awareness of local archives and family histories. Stephenson is famous for his works featuring North Carolina rural life. Joseph Bathanti, the former North Carolina Poet Laureate, said, “Shelby Stephenson was born to be a North Carolina Poet Laureate. He truly is the voice of North Carolina.” Mr. Stephenson will deliver a collection of his better-known works. Mr. Stephenson is a prolific writer of poetry and song. His first poem, “Whales Are Hard To See” was published in 1973 and he said, “my recent publication is a reissue of a long, book length poem called Fiddledeedee.” Alongside his wife Linda, he has recorded a collection of musical CDs. He has published more than a dozen books, taught writing at universities including UNC-Pembroke and won numerous awards and honors. For more on Mr. Shelby Stephenson, visit his website at www.shelbystephenson.com. This event is open to the public. Tickets for the luncheon are available for $15 on a first come, first served basis. They can be purchased at the Randolph Arts Guild, Brightside Gallery, and the Courier-Tribune (check or cash only). Reserve your seat by Wednesday, May 20. For questions, contact Derrick Grantham at (336) 302-4225.
