Union Pacific Rail-road and North Plattehave a very unique rela-tionship.

This weekend, thetwo will celebrate 150years of Union Pacificand North Platte’s part-nership during the fifthannual Rail Fest withthe Star-Spangled Spec-tacular fireworks dis-play and a giant birth-day cake social.

“North Platte, I think,is the quintessentialrailroad town,” saidBrenda Mainwaring,UPRR director of pub-lic relations for Nebras-ka and Iowa. “Such alarge portion of thepopulation works for,did work for or has rela-tives that work for UP.

“There’s someonearound every dinnertable that has ties to UP,Mainwaring added.“We don’t have that invery many communi-ties. Where we do havethat, we want to makesure we celebrate itwith the community.”

Union Pacific willpresent a giant birthdaycake for the communityfrom 6-8 p.m. in CodyPark on Saturday tohelp celebrate Rail Festand the company’s150th anniversary. Afterdusk, the celebrationwill be capped off by afireworks display.

“We have reallystaged our 150th activi-ties to collaborate withcommunities,” Main-waring said. “Rail Festwas obviously a greatfit.”

Mainwaring praisedRail Fest, calling it aunique festival.

“Rail Fest keeps get-ting bigger and biggerevery year. It’s the onlyUnion Pacific-orientedfestival of its kind,” shesaid. “It’s very organic— the community hascreated it and it getsbigger every year.”

Union Pacific willalso sponsor mini-trainrides, as well as havingthe historic UP 844steam engine on displaythroughout the week-end. People will also beable to take tours ofBailey Yard, including amuseum car.

“People who take thebus out to Bailey Yardwill be able to climbaboard the museum carand get a little taste ofthe history we displayat our museum inCouncil Bluffs,” Main-waring said.

Rail Fest ChairmanDave Harrold said abirthday celebration forUnion Pacific, with afireworks display,seemed to be the perfectfit.

“All of our entertain-ment, we want it to look

like a wedding recep-tion, where grandchil-dren and grandparentsare all out there at thesame time,” Harroldsaid. “Fireworks werethe perfect way to dothat.”

Harrold said withUnion Pacific datingback to the 1860s, andthe historical ties be-tween the end of theCivil War and thetranscontinental rail-road, a patriotic theme

seemed inevitable. Healso said Union Pacifichas been recognized na-tionally for hiring vet-erans.

“How do you [cele-brate] all those things atone time — it just seemslike fireworks is justperfect,” he said.

Visitors to thisyear’s Rail Fest cele-bration will take astep back in timethanks to a unique,historical display thathas been added. A tele-graph line has beenset up at the train de-pot exhibit at thesoutheast corner ofCody Park, 1402 N. Jef-fers St.

According to JimGriffin, Lincoln Coun-ty Historical Museumdirector, a telegrapherwill be stationed in-side the buildingthroughout Rail Fest,demonstrating howthe antiquated systemof communicationused to work.

“It’s just anothergreat activity to show-case the railroad,”Griffin said. “The tele-graph came acrossjust before the UnionPacific Railroad. It be-came instrumental inkeeping trains onschedule and helpingthem to not run intoone another. The linebasically became thelife link for all the peo-ple out here in ruralNebraska.”

According to Grif-fin, a permanent tele-graph line is set up atthe historical muse-um, 2403 N. BuffaloBill Ave.

“I can’t prove it, butI think it’s the short-est in the world,” hesaid. “It goes in oneend of our buildingand out the other.”

Wire and posts fromthe original transcon-tinental line are alsoon display at the his-torical museum.

“The Creightonbrothers started that,”Griffin said. “The

Union Pacific Rail-road ended up follow-ing basically the samepath.”

According to infor-mation from the Ne-braska State Histori-cal Society, EdwardCreighton, an Ohionative, was one of themost successful busi-nessmen of Irish an-cestry to settle in Ne-braska. His youngerbrother John workedfor him, according toGriffin.

In 1858, Edward as-sisted in building atelegraph line from St.Joseph, Mo. to Oma-ha, which gave Omahaits first connection bytelegraph to the eastcoast.

He visualized theconstruction of a linethat stretched evenfurther west, and in1860 was commis-sioned to survey, bystagecoach and mule-back, a route betweenthe Missouri Riverand the Pacific Coast.

the building of a tele-graph line from Jules-burg, Colo., to Salt LakeCity, Utah, where it con-nected with a line builtby the California-basedPacific Telegraph Com-pany. Edward becamethe first general super-intendent of the compa-ny, but resigned in 1867.He later built a line fromSalt Lake City to Mon-tana.

Edward invested bothin PTC and in a freight-ing company which op-erated from Omaha toDenver, then to SaltLake City, and to theMontana gold fields.

He also contracted forgrading for the UPRR.In 1864, Edward becamea cattleman nearLaramie, Wyo., and sup-plied beef to UPRR con-struction crews.

According to Ann Mil-ton, Rail Fest committeemember, the telegraphrecreation at the depotwill be open to the pub-lic on Friday from 2-6p.m., Saturday from 10a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sun-day from 10 a.m. to 4

p.m. Admission is free.It’s only part of the

historical museum’s in-volvement with the cele-bration. The attractionis also giving visitors achance to take a part of

Rail Fest home withthem.

Bill Fanter, the muse-um’s blacksmith, cre-ates commemorativeknives every year. Eachis fashioned out of arailroad spike. The topsare twisted into handles,and the points are flat-tened into blades. Theyare polished and en-graved by a local artist.

“This year, they areengraved in gold,” Grif-fin said. “We try to offersomething differentevery year.” He saidonly two are left of the2012 editions.

Tickets can be pur-chased for $5 each at themuseum or at the RailFest information boothat the main entrance toCody Park.

Griffin said one knifewas made in honor of theCanteen and the other isin recognition of theUPRR’s 150th anniver-sary. Two knives from2011 are also still for saleat a cost of $200 each.

Griffin said anyone in-terested in reservingone of next year’sknives could do so bycalling him at 534-5640or emailing [email protected]. Twenty fivepercent of the $200 pricemust be paid in advance.Orders can be shipped.

Cookbooks withrecipes from the Can-teen will be for sale dur-ing the Canteen SpiritExperience at the NorthPlatte Community Play-house and the cemeterytours. Proceeds frombooks and knives will goback to the museum tohelp pay for its operat-ing expenses.

Various railroad dis-plays will also be set upat the museum. Itshours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.Monday through Satur-day and 1-5 p.m. on Sun-day.

This year’s Rail Festcelebration in NorthPlatte is historical fora number of reasons.For train buffs itmight be the appear-ance of the entire lineof Union Pacific Her-itage Locomotives.

All six locomotives,representing the sixlines that weremerged into the UnionPacific across the com-pany’s history will beon display near thediesel shop at BaileyYard Friday throughSunday.

“We’ve never had allsix of them together atone time,” said DavidThalken, with UnionPacific. “We broughtthem here, cleanedthem up, and they willbe on the west side ofthe shop.”

The six locomotivesrepresent the Chicagoand North WesternRailroad, the Mis-souri-Kansas-Texas

Railroad, the Mis-souri Pacific Railroad,the Denver and RioGrande Western Rail-road, the Southern Pa-cific Railroad and theWestern Pacific Rail-road.

Those six enginesare also joined by thecommemorative BoyScout 100th Anniver-sary Locomotive andthe Breast CancerAwareness locomo-tive. Union Pacificwill also have on dis-play the newest en-gine in UP’s fleet, the5,000th General Elec-tric Evolution SeriesLocomotive, as well asLocomotive No. 844,the UP’s historicalsteam engine.

“We’ll have the old-est, the newest and theengines that made upthe railroad,” Thalkensaid.

The six commemo-rative engines werebuilt in the mid-1990s,and display the flag-ship colors of each ofthe six different rail-

roads that incorporatedinto the Union Pacificfleet.

“Having them all inone place for the firsttime is a very signifi-cant event. North Platteand Rail Fest will reapthe benefits of that,”said Brenda Mainwar-ing, UPRR director ofpublic relations for Ne-braska and Iowa.

Chicago andNorth WesternRailroad

In 2006, UP unveiledthe green, yellow andwhite Chicago andNorth Western Railroadcommemorative engineNo. 1995 at the OgilvieTransportation Centerin Chicago on July 15. Itis the fifth unit in theheritage fleet.

The Chicago andNorth Western Railroadserviced Chicago com-muters, as well as theiron mines of Michiganand the coal fields ofIllinois, and was thefirst railroad to connectwith Union Pacific at

Council Bluffs in 1867.The Chicago and

North Western alsopartnered with UP in1984 to open a line be-tween the coal fields inWyoming’s Powder Riv-er Basin, and 11 yearslater the two companiesmerged.

A predecessor of theChicago and NorthWestern Railway, theFremont, Elkhorn andMissouri Valley Rail-road Company, con-structed the Cowboyline in the 1870s and1880s that servicednorthern Nebraskafrom Norfolk toChadron.

Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad

Highlighted by itsbright red and maroonpaint scheme, with pinkhighlights and a whitestar on the front of theengine, the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroadcommemorative No.1988 was issued in Sep-tember 2005. The com-memorative train runson routes originally

used by the Katy — theunofficial name for theline.

The Katy was com-missioned in 1865 andinitially had lines ex-tending from Missouriand Kansas downthrough Arkansas andOklahoma into Texas.By 1988, when it was in-corporated into theUnion Pacific, the Katyserved six Midwesternstates. The line servedan important role in thecoal shipping business,while in operation, as aconnection between theupper Midwest and thesouthwest.

The line is the name-sake for Katy TrailState Park in Missouri,which roughly followsthe original line for 240miles beginning in St.Louis, and is open tohikers, joggers and cy-clists.

Missouri PacificRailroad

Adorned in two-toneblue and white, theUnion Pacific intro-duced its No. 1982, acommemorative enginefrom the 1940s celebrat-ing the Missouri PacificRailroad in 2005 in Om-aha. The streamliner-es-que locomotive featuresthe screaming eaglegraphic introduced bythe Missouri Pacific inthe 1960s on their pas-senger trains.

The Missouri Pacificwas commissioned in1849 in St. Louis, and aground-breaking cere-mony was on July 4,1851 in St. Louis. Therail company had linesextending through Mis-souri, Colorado, Ne-

braska, Arkansas,Texas and Louisiana,and passenger routes inthe south-central por-tion of the country.

In 1982 the Union Pa-cific, Missouri Pacificand Western Pacificmerged, and in 1997 theMissouri Pacific legallymerged into the UnionPacific Railroad.

Denver and RioGrande WesternRailroad

The UP No. 1989 wasintroduced in June 2006to commemorate theDenver and Rio GrandeWestern Railroad. Thelocomotive is painted inlight blue, yellow andred, with dark bluemountains adorningthe side.

Founded in 1871, theRio Grande traversedthe mountains of Col-orado and New Mexicoalong the Rio GrandeRiver, as well as passen-ger service through theColorado mountains toSalt Lake City. In 1928,the Moffat Tunnel inColorado was opened,which shortened theroute the Denver-SaltLake route significantly.

The highlight of theDenver and Rio GrandeWestern Railroad’sroute was its journeythrough the RoyalGorge in southern Col-orado, which was com-pleted to Salida in Mayof 1880, and reachedGunnison and the BlackCanyon of the Gunni-son in 1881 and 1882.

Southern Pacific Railroad

To celebrate Califor-nia’s Southern PacificRailroad, Union Pacificintroduced UP No. 1996 in2006, the last of its com-memorative engines, instately red and black.

Founded in San Francis-co in 1865, the originalSouthern Pacific railstook trains from SanFrancisco to San Diego.Eventually the line car-ried freight and passen-gers along the westernseaboard from Seattle toSan Diego and Mexico

City. A line from SanDiego into Texas and on toNew Orleans was also es-tablished in the late 1800s.

One of the distinct fea-tures of the Southern Pa-cific Railroad was theGreat Tehachapi Loop de-scending into the SanJoaquin Valley in Califor-nia where one train wouldcurve back on itself as itdescended the switchbacks.

The Southern Pacific in-corporated the Central Pa-cific Railroad in 1959, andmerged with Union Pacif-ic in 1996.

Western PacificRailroad

UP No. 1983 was intro-duced in Omaha in July2005, with a distinct or-ange, green and grey paintpattern, to commemoratethe final paint schemethat Western Pacific intro-duced in the 1970s.

From 1910 to 1982, West-ern Pacific operated fromSan Francisco to Salt LakeCity and into Colorado. Itwas incorporated intoUnion Pacific in 1983.

The most famous aspectof the Western PacificRailroad was the Califor-nia Zephyr passengertrain, which ran fromChicago to San Franciscoand operated jointly bythe Chicago, Burlingtonand Quincy Railroad,Denver and Rio GrandeWestern Railroad andWestern Pacific.

What happened inNorth Platte duringWorld War II reallywas the best Americathere ever was, saidauthor and CNN con-tributor Bob Greene.

“Back in the 1942,no one told the peo-ple of North Plattethat they had to dowhat they did — andif they hadn’t doneit, no one would haveever known. But theydid do it — and theymade millions of sol-diers forever grate-ful. Day after day,night after night,every day of the war,the people of NorthPlatte were there tomeet every train andgreet every soldier,”Greene wrote in anemail celebrating the70th anniversary ofthe day a group ofpeople in North Plat-te collected food andgifts and gathered atthe Union PacificRailroad depot inNorth Platte to meet

a troop train. Thetrain, it was thought,was full of local Na-tional Guard mem-bers passing throughon their way to war.Even though thetrain was filled withsoldiers fromKansas, not Nebras-ka, the gifts and foodwere distributed andthe Canteen wasborn. Greene wrotethe best selling book,“Once Upon ATown” about theNorth Platte Can-teen.

More than fiveyears later, the Can-teen closed its doorsafter serving morethan 6 million ser-vicemen and womenwho traveled acrossthe country.

“The Canteen is a big part of NorthPlatte’s history and part of the rail-road history,” said Rob Martinson,who is one of the organizers of theevent. “This event is another way tokeep the story going, even thoughevery day we are losing people whowere veterans of WWII and Canteenvolunteers.”

The Canteen Spirit Experience willbe Friday, Sept. 14 at 4 p.m., Saturday,Sept. 15 at 4 p.m. and Sunday, Sept. 16at 2 p.m. Each session will begin witha showing of the film, followed by apanel discussion. A “canteen authen-tic” meal will be served after eachsession. The event is a fundraiser forthe Playhouse. Cost is $5 per person.

On Sunday, Mayor Marc Kaschkewill present Canteen Spirit Awards toNorth Platte resident Chuck Scripterand Ainsworth middle school studentVanessa Taylor.

“I think Chuck volunteers morehours than a lot of us work in ourregular jobs,” Kaschke said. “Hepours his heart into everything hedoes and if something needs to bedone, he is the first one in line.”

Taylor is the Nebraska winner ofthe “Salute to Freedom Award” spon-sored by the National World War IIMuseum for her essay on the Can-teen.

She and her family will be in NorthPlatte on Sunday to receive theaward.

“Vanessa is taking our Canteen sto-ry across the country,” Kaschke said.“She is letting the world know what awonderful and special thing it was.She and her family are very excitedabout meeting real Canteen volun-teers and servicemen.”

Grand Island is the lat-est Nebraska town to benamed to Union PacificRailroad’s Train TownUSA registry. The desig-nation is part of UPRR’syearlong 150th anniver-sary celebration.

According to a pressrelease, the communityreceived an officialTrain Town USA resolu-tion signed by JimYoung, UPRR chairman.A description of thetown’s historical connec-tion with the railroadwill also be featured onwww.up150.com.

According to the web-site, the registry is away to recognize long-standing community re-lationships. It’s open toall incorporated townsalong UPRR tracks orterminals.

Grand Island joinsNebraska communitiesOmaha and North Plat-te, which received thehonor in May, on thelist. Mark Davis, UPRRspokesman, said a totalof 48 towns across theU.S. have received thedesignation and saidmore will be added tothe registry throughoutthe year.

“We are proud to rec-ognize Grand Island aswe commemorate ourrailroad’s sesquicenten-nial celebration andgrowing up together,”

Among the thousandsof people who will be at-tending the 2012 RailFest Celebration thisweekend will be Deb Ri-ley of North Platte.

Riley’s husbandWilliam died on Sept. 18,2011. At the time of hisdeath he was working asan engineer for theUnion Pacific Railroad.He became the firstAfrican-American hiredto work at Bailey Yardin North Platte in 1968.

“Bill was from the eraof the late 1960s and hadseen a lot of racial ha-tred and violence,” DebRiley said. “He was pret-ty quiet about being thefirst African-Americanhired until after he hadbeen inducted into theGolden Spike Hall ofFame.”

Riley was among theinaugural inducteesinto the Hall of Fame.

“He was a very hum-ble man and was veryproud of the honor,” shesaid.

Before his death, Ri-ley was a supporter ofRail Fest.

“He adored workingfor the railroad and heloved trains,” Rileysaid.

In an interview in2010, Riley talked abouthis role in breaking thecolor barrier. He grewup in Valentine andmoved to North Platteafter high school.

“I didn’t even know Iwas black until I cameto North Platte,” hesaid at the time. “Allthe blacks and Mexi-cans were on the northside of town and on theother side were thewhites.”

Hired by the UPRRthe same year as the as-sissination of Dr. Mar-tin Luther King, Rileyremained the onlyAfrican American onthe railroad in NorthPlatte for 10 years.

Riley was a graduateof North Platte Vo-Tech with degrees inautomotive and car-pentry. He was a veter-an of the Vietnam War.

“He was a quietman,” Deb Riley said.“While the life of anengineer is hard,where they are alwayson call with no actualschedule, the railroadprovided a very goodlife for us.”
