sentences. The students are also going to be assessed the first week of January on the high frequency words learned thus far. The grade level expectation is that your student is able to read all 89 words. Please continue to work with your student daily on these words to ensure that they can read them. Your student has also recently participated in end of the quarter testing including an addition and subtraction assessment, a math quarterly assessment, and a reading quarterly assessment. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact your child’s teacher. We care very much about your child’s progress. In order to ensure we are all on the same path our classroom

and school have daily learning targets and goals. These are designed to help your child understand their purpose for learning. Ask your child what their learning targets are, their goals, and how they are going to achieve the goal.

Greetings from the First Grade Teachers! We hope that everyone had a safe and happy holiday season. We cannot believe that we are half way through the school year already! The first grade students have been working diligently in class to learn and retain the skills that will help them in the future. In Math we will continue to review addition and subtraction in equations and story problems to 20. We are currently working on place value with a focus on representing a two digit number as the tens and ones. In Reading we are currently in the middle of Unit 3. We are working on diagraphs, past tense verbs, and writing descriptive

I hope that everyone enjoyed Winter Break!!

This month we will be working with 2-D shapes and patterns in math!

In reading, we will be working on reviewing our high-frequency words. We will be working with the letter O and F and the sounds they make.

We will continue working on blending sounds to form words!!

In Social Studies, our topic will be “My Friends and Neighborhood.”

Continue reading at least 20 minutes daily at home. Feel free to read to your child as well. You can model good fluency and expression. Remember to stop periodically to ask for predictions, or summarize what was read. This will help improve their comprehension.

The Second Grade Team Wishes You Happy Holidays!!

We hope everyone had a relaxing Thanksgiving! The second graders just finished a math topic on place value of 3 digit numbers. We will begin the topic on addition and subtraction of 2 digit numbers with some regrouping! Please practice the basic math facts at home. By practicing the facts at home your child will be better prepared for the transition to regrouping.

Parents and Students,

We are already finding items in the lost and found without a name on them. Please be sure to label your student’s book bag, lunch box, and coat/jacket with a permanent marker. The school staff checks for names before placing in the lost and found. At the end of every quarter, items not claimed are sent to charity. We prefer to see these returned to their rightful owner but need the assistance of the parents. We hope everyone is having a great start to your school year!

Third quarter will find us back in Social Studies. Topics to be covered include: immigration, volunteerism, and city government. We will move back to science 4th quarter.

The students will be taking the DIBELS reading assessment in January. This will be an indicator of their progress in fluency, accuracy, and comprehension. Please continue to encourage your child to read every day!! Listening to them read aloud is very helpful for their fluency score.

Please check with your child about their work supplies. It may be time for new pencils, erasers and crayons.

Third Grade Team

December has been a busy, chilly month! We hope we get outside in January!! After a relaxing Winter Break, we should all be ready to start our new semester!! The third graders will be going to the Eastern Avenue Branch Library in January. This is a District wide initiative. Mr. Reagan is helping our classes prepare for this learning experience. He will also continue with library lessons here in our IMC.

We will be starting a new unit in math. Fractions will be our focus!

In January fourth grade will be continuing to prepare for the Iowa Assessments. We will continue our math focus lessons. In math, we will also be working on measurement. They will need to be able to convert: feet/inches, minutes/hour, liters/ml, tons/pounds, gallons/quarts, kilometer/meter, and know which of the units of measurement to use, along with estimating how many they would need. Try to reinforce this at home by asking about how many ______s in a _______. They will

also be bringing papers home for you to review.

In Language Arts, we will be starting Unit 4 for the second half of the year. We will be reading about dogs, people overcoming disabilities, oil use and it’s effects on people and the environment, and whales. For comprehension we will be focusing on drawing conclusions based on the clues in the reading. In writing, we will be working on explanatory writing- how to do things.

We will be teaching Social Studies this quarter. We will be continuing to teach second step. With the classes being indoors more, it gives an opportunity to work on accepting others and getting along.

accuracy. In Math, students will be working with multiplication and division of fractions, and multiplication and division of decimals. In Social Studies, students will be studying the following:

Chapter 4 - How and Why Europeans Came to the New World

Chapter 5 - Routes of Exploration to the New World

Chapter 6 - Early English Settlements

Chapter 7 - Comparing the Colonies

Chapter 8 - Facing Slavery

Chapter 9 - Life in Colonial Williamsburg

Science will start again in quarter 4.

A final reminder, PLEASE remember to dress appropriately for the cold weather. Students will be kept inside only if the temperature/wind chill is less than 15 degrees. Hats, mittens or gloves, scarves, and even earmuffs will keep you much warmer than just your winter coat.

Happy New Year!!! It’s hard to believe that it is 2014 and that first semester has come to an end. We have been very busy in 5th grade. We recently completed, or will be completing, our Quarter 2 Reading and Math assessments; SRI; SMI; DAZE and DIBELS assessments. Thank you for having your child here at school and ready to learn each day.

We will be finishing Unit 3 in Reading. The overall theme is “Turning Points” and we are reading some wonderful articles and stories! Please continue to use the weekly Strategy & Skill sheets that are sent home on Mondays to review what we are covering in class. Also, continue to read nightly to improve your reading fluency, comprehension, and

It is hard to believe that fall has come and gone and winter is on its way. It has been an exciting season here in the library. The library lessons for December focused on book talks, historical fiction, and caring. Some books the students really enjoyed included The Stranger, by Chris Van Allsburg, The Chronicles of Narnia series, by C.S. Lewis, and Brave Irene, by William Steig. To

encourage caring, the students helped the Grinch, who was born with a heart two sizes too small, grow the largest heart of all. When students demonstrated acts of caring and kindness, they had the chance to come to the library and add a heart to the Grinch.

Just a few reminders about caring for books:

1. If books are ripped or damaged, do not try to fix them. Please inform the library staff.

2. Please be careful with water bottles. Many of them are leaking and damaging the books.

Happy New Year!

Mrs. Spaete Mr. Reagan

I would like to say thank you to all the kids and everyone else who bought at least one

of the 775 bags of popcorn we made for our 2nd popcorn day this year. I would also like to say thank you to the following for helping to make, bag, deliver all those bags of pop-corn & clean up: Barb Dalton-Banks, Kim Rice, Shelly Fischer, Katy Strzepek-Dye, Elizabeth Bevans & our watchdog dad for the day Eric Jackson. If you know them, be sure to tell them thank you. If you do not know them, come meet them and be a volunteer at our next popcorn day on January 17th 2014.

We are always looking for volunteers so if you are interested, please contact me.

Our next popcorn day will be next year. January 17th, 2014

CHANGING PICK UP POLICY

Due to the numerous requests we get for parents to have students wait in the office, we are now changing the pick-up policy for all students to wait in the gym for their parents with the car riders. Parents need to use the north lot to park and walk in to get their kids rather than the staff lot which is closer to the office entrance. We are also trying to keep the students out of the office after school because there isn’t any supervision other than Miss Jen. She sometimes needs to run outside or to the gym, leaving students alone and unsupervised. Also, as she tries to listen to the radio for communication and answer phones, the kids can get loud. The office will be communicating this with parents as they call in. Students will be brought to the office after the dismissal staff has released all car riders and the students will then wait in the front foyer. We will call for any students that haven’t been picked up at that time

without falling on the floor. The 1st

graders try to stretch to get the tootsie roll or toss it in the air. It doesn’t work. They have to stay calm so they can think of solutions and they have to stay calm when they don’t get the tootsie roll. In 2nd

grade they remember the strategy of teamwork and work together. The long spoon is perfect for giving the tootsie roll to the other student.

In January, we will be starting test talks for the Iowa Assessments. This year the assessments will happen in April. We meet with each 3-5th

grader individually and share last year’s scores as well as ideas for what students can do now to improve

December was full of cold weather and some snow, I wonder what this new year will bring us. In December, I taught K-2 lessons and many calm down strategies. They all know “Smell the Soup, cool the soup”, “Think of your happy place” and count to 10. In 1st grade we add “Spaghetti Toes” and the “Pretzel”. In 2nd grade they learn “Stop, Think, What could happen? Is that what you want?”

The culminating lesson in 1st and 2nd

grade is the Tootsie Roll problem solving lesson. A pair of students each have very long spoon and each scoops up a tootsie roll. The tootsie roll needs to go from spoon to hand

scores in April. Ideas include read 20 minutes every night, do math games on the computer, drink water to keep the brain hydrated and get 10 hours of sleep every night. Research has shown that sleep is so important for kids and adults (Most adults need 7 to 8 hours nightly.) 10 hours of sleep means an 8:00 bedtime for kids who get up at 6:00am.

This year, Eisenhower’s annual magazine sale will begin on Wednesday, January 15 and will end on Wednesday, January 29.

The fundraiser has been a very successful tradition at Eisenhower for many years. In the past, Eisenhower has retained 40% of every dollar spent on

magazines and other products. Students are encouraged to sell magazines to people that they know such as friends and relatives. The students also earn prizes for selling magazines. Remember that our magazine sale is a great opportunity to not only order new magazines but to also renew current subscriptions.

The money raised from the magazine sale is mainly used to purchase weekly news magazines for every student in every classroom at Eisenhower. The weekly news magazines are vey expensive and are not provided by our school district. The news magazines are very beneficial to the students here at Eisenhower because they provide a rich and valuable resource for nonfiction reading. They are also an additional resource in the areas of social studies and science. Therefore, it is a priority at Eisenhower that we continue to order news magazines for all of our students each year. Examples of news magazines that are used by Eisenhower teachers are Time for Kids, Scholastic News, and National Geographic.

Last year was a record year for our magazine sale with students selling over $4000 worth of magazines. We want to have continued success of our magazine sale this year. Parents can help by watching for magazine sale packets going home on January 15 and planning what magazines you would like to purchase or renew.

the John Deere Auditorium at the Figge. Student, Charlie Wooldridge

wrote about the Italian leather seats in his classroom writing assignment.

Students: Lola Brooke, Macie Wilkins, Charlie Wooldrige,

Samantha Diekman,

Maggie Mahieu, Courben Session and Aislynn Fredenberg presented at the school board meeting on December 9th. They spoke into a microphone as they shared their experience, art work and writing with the board members and district leaders. The school board members and Dr. Tate were truly delighted with the confidence and enthusiasm of these young students.

Third grade students have been very excited to see the finished coil pots and clay birds.

Functional art and decorative art is a big idea as well as forms, and sculpture.

The 2nd grade field study trip was a wonderful experience. Students were so pleased to give their donations to the animals at the Humane Society. Pam Arndt, director of the Humane Society was moved to tears. The Figge staff did a great job planning an enjoyable day teaching students about animals as subject in art. Students toured the galleries to look at and discuss art with animals as subject. The studio experience allowed students to create 3D pop up habitats with model magic animal sculptures. The Artica room was a favorite; students chose many activities; drawing, Legos, computers etc. Students learned that the Figge is a fun place to learn about art. The Figge staff were impressed with how knowledgeable students are about art and how well behaved they were. Thanks to Eisenhower PTA and Great Minds for funding this extraordinary integrated field study trip. Students were truly engaged and excited.

Students enjoyed watching a short movie about artist Henri Rousseau in

Fourth grade students are finishing community landmarks and will begin mask making after break.

Fifth grade students are working on ideas for Surrealism. Surrealism combines realistic subject with dreamlike ideas and fantasies. Artist Rene Magritte and Salvador Dali are introduced.

Second grade students are finishing animal paintings. They are in the process of making pinch pots, functional art and form.

Kindergarten and 1st grade students

are learning about texture and pattern through animals as subject.

Art work is kept for Fine Arts Night, April 22nd. Art work that comes home is practice work if you plan to move please let me know so I can send art work home.

concert from the 4th graders on February 10th. In the meantime they were able to share some music with their classmates and parents during a presentation in the Eisenhower library.

The Jungle Bungle Practice Contest will start as soon as we return from winter break so be sure to watch for that information. Students will keep a practice chart and earn points to qualify to attend the party set for March 3rd at Jungle Bungle.

Congratulations to our 5th grade orchestra

students on a successful concert on December 5th. This was our first Zone concert featuring Central High and the feeder schools orchestra students. It was a great experience for our students and a real treat for our audience. We look forward to making this an annual event.

The 4th grade orchestra has been learning a great deal this semester and we look forward to an evening

Get in the habit of practicing and writing the times on a practice log now. If you don’t have a practice chart taped into your book then just write the times in your planner or on a separate piece of paper that you can keep in your instrument case.

Spending time studying notes and working on flashcards may count as part of your practice time. Learning to read the notes is an essential skill for a successful musician.

TARGET shoppers! We mentioned last month the Target RED card program, and how you're able to designate Eisenhower so the school can receive up to 1% of your purchases. We failed to

mention the RED card is not only a credit card, you can also apply for a RED card that is a DEBIT card. So if you shop at Target, there's really no reason not to have one of the Target RED cards and help Eisenhower!

BEST BUY shoppers! We've found another rewards program. When making purchases at Best Buy, you are able to designate your reward points to Eisenhower. There's no card or ID number needed. When checking out, simply let the cashier know you'd like to give your reward points to Eisenhower Elementary in Davenport. Points can be turned in to reward certificates and depending on the amount of points received, we may be able to purchase 'big' ticket items to raffle at Winter Carnivals. So again, THANKS FOR YOUR SUPPORT!

Question:

President Eisenhower was the only presi-dent in the 21st century to be this. What was

it?

Answer: Eisenhower was the only bald president in the 21st century.

We are doing great with the prescription bottles. We will be dropping off our first bagful this month. Please continue to drop them

off in the box outside of the officed. The Quad-City Animal Welfare Center is a no-kill animal shelter in Milan that has a spaying and neutering program. They use empty medicine containers to send home medicine with the animals after their surgery. Bring them in and drop them in the box outside of the office. Any questions, contact Jackie Diekmann, 563-359-1858, [email protected].

The milk cap program has changed! It is now called "OUR CAPS, YOUR CAUSE." They now only accept caps that have the PRAIRIE FARMS logo on them. They will no longer accept Swiss Valley caps. The new caps have just the Prairie Farms Logo on them, which is a peel off sticker. When the sticker is removed, a code number is revealed to input into the Our Caps Your Cause system. This can be done online at http://www.prairiefarms.com/our-caps-your-cause.aspx. Otherwise, you can still bring them in and I'll enter the codes for you. Just be sure they're rinsed so they don't mold. Thanks for your support!

We would like to say thank you to everyone, from Teachers, staff, students, families, friends & local businesses. Because of you, the Winter Wonderland Dance benefit was a great success. The main purpose of the dance was to celebrate the life of Jacob Dalton. In doing so, we continue to keep the memory of Jacob alive and continue to promote Jacob’s motto of “I choose to be positive”. We thank you all for being “bucket fillers” that evening.

The other purpose of the dance was to raise funds for an account to be used by any current Eisenhower student who may be undergoing extensive medical treatment, with ongoing medical expenses. Jacob’s Grandparents, Oliver and Barb Dalton-Banks, donated $1,000.00 to establish the fund for the Winter Wonderland dance benefit. They also presented the idea to pass this on to another child in need like Jacob was. They decided to make this generous donation because of the fact the Jacob said he had the best night ever at our previous dance. The family was overwhelmed by the amount of generosity shown to Jacob and his entire family during a very trying time for them.

With your help, the Winter Wonderland Dance benefit fund now has a little over $3,000.00 in it. Let’s hope that we never have another Eisenhower student who is facing extensive medical issues.

Thank you for helping to support this Celebration and we will continue to do the Winter Wonderland Dance benefit annually with all of your help.

On a side note, how much fun was that to see “IKE” and Principal Klipsch dancing with you all night long? I say this all the time, but it truly does take a village and I am proud to be part of this village we have all created at Eisenhower Elementary.

Please visit the schools website to see a list of all the local business donors and patronage them when you can to continue to foster Eisenhower’s relationship with these generous companies.

Respectfully,

The Winter Wonderland Dance Committee,

The Winter Dance I went on Friday December 6, 2013 to the winter wonderland dance with Alexa Noble in my class. Alexa and her dad picked me up around 6:10 at night. When we got to school, we ran to the door then we paid our admission. When we got in the gym, we asked Dr. Klipch where we should put our jacket. After we put our jacket, we started dancing. Alexa and I both put a song request. Alexa made a request for “This Girl’s On Fire “ and I requested “Ready Or Not.” The person that played the music was a DJ from KissFM. The DJ joked around a lot. The DJ was awesome. There was also snowcones . We got to put our own flavors the snowcones. The flavors were tigers blood, blue raspberry, watermelon, cotton candy, and sour pink lem-onade. I had a king konk and got a free slap bracelet.

Then Mr. Dalton gave a very good speech. He made me cry. They also played a movie. I have seen the movie so I didn’t want to see it.

Then after the dance my dad picked me up and we looked at Christmas lights.

My Christmas Break Probably I’m going to have a lot of sleepovers . Were celebrating my dad’s birthday on the 28th on a full moon and for the 29th were going to watch a packards game and their going against the Chicago bears! My family hates them a lot! So were probably going to beat them, it’s also after my dad’s birthday staying in town. Were also going to go to the y a lot like 2,3 or 4 times a week and at the y were going to swim, play basketball, and play racket ball.
