They call me Snowpaw and I am about 1yr old. I am a high energy, fun loving fellow who loves life and has mastered the household rules. I love to play with other

dogs, go for walks or run alongside your bike. I will be a great addition to any active & loving family.

“Duke, Duke, Duke, Duke of hart. Duke, Duke…” well even if you don’t know the tune you’ll want to

meet me! My name is Duke and I am about 1.5yrs old. I am house trained, good on leash and full of love. I also like kids and other dogs. I can be a bit shy at first but re-ally I like to think I’m a big lap dog.

Ahoy there mate! My name is Captain Jack Sparrow and I am a handsome Husky/Lab/Akita X. I am full grown at 60lbs and also full blown cuddly. I get along well with other dogs & people of all sizes. I can be a tad stubborn at times, but for the right rewards I am up for anything!

I am Mojo. I am a 2yr old, 60lb, boy of solid love thats look-ing for a place to call home. I love toys,

people and other dogs - if they aren’t too pushy or dominant. I am well behaved in the house and my foster parents think I am just the best dog ever.

My name is Lila and I am a 3.5yr old Pomeranian X. I am a lovely, cuddly, playful little girl who gets along well with other dogs and loves people of all sizes. If you

think I would be the perfect match to com-plete your family please contact hart today.

Hi! I am a 5yr old Pomera-nian X named Tammy. I was quite fearful of people at first but I have warmed up a great deal and I am doing very well in foster care. I

love other dogs of all sizes and I am doing great with all the rules of living in a home.

While all kinds of pets can bring children pleasure, it is important to choose a pet that is right for your family, your home, and your lifestyle; and one that your child can help care for.

Hello every-one! I am Milo and I just LOVE to get attention. I will roll over for belly rubs any-time and that’s when I turn into a purring machine. I am very sociable,

love other cats, and simply can’t wait any longer to meet you!

Hey there! Our names are Bella and Bebe. We are sisters and love each other very much so being adopted together would be ideal but we really need homes so we don’t mind being adopted

apart. We are both very playful & friendly girls.

Hi, my name is Dekker and I am a big teddy bear. I love to snuggle and enjoy lots of attention from people. I am a very social guy and seem to do well with other cats. I

hope my new home has lots of yummy treats and a nice warm bed.

Hi, my name is Tsu’tey. I am looking for a new forever home where I can get lots of treats and attention. I am very playful, super cute, and I get along great

with other kitties. Do you have room at your house and enough love in your heart for me?

Whisper here, and just like my name I am a quiet & calm girl. I am very sweet and will make some lucky family a wonderful lap cat. I am such a doll! I also do great with

other cats. Please call about me today, I am so excited to meet my new family.

Tail Of The Monthby Jamie Hunter

Our Rescue Dog Family Album

The PRM Team has been in-volved in volunteer operated rescue for many years so Our Rescue Dog Family Album was a very easy choice for our next review. Writt en by Dr. Diane Pomerance, and fi lled with fantastic photos, this inspiring hardcover features over 40 rescue stories in a vibrant scrapbook format. Pomerance kindly tells us of their rescue and recovery while still revealing some of the heartbreaking work faced daily in rescue. This endearing book not only pays homage to the author’s beloved rescues, but also raises awareness about the ongoing surplus of home-less companion animals, and opens the reader’s eyes to the special love and devotion of a rescued pet. Like so many in rescue, Dr. Pomerance and her hus-band Norman did not plan to devote their lives to rescuing pets... but they could not turn their backs on pets in such dire straits and felt compelled to respond to the heavy need presenting itself. As Dr. Pomerance

explains, “We never deliberately set out to ‘save’ or ‘rescue’ dogs. Yet, somehow, providing care for, adopting, and rehabilitating animals in need

has become a way of life for my husband and me…Although there is so much sadness and oft en

horrible suff ering of the animals who come into our lives, we are so gratifi ed by and amazed at the

manner in which they generally recover from abuse, neglect and abandonment, and the joy and beauty

of their journey…Each and every day of our lives is a celebration of life.”

Personally, I hope that this book reaches some of those people who are thinking of purchasing an expensive designer pet rather than adopting/saving a life. Hope-fully it will help show how amazing rescues can be, and that they are certainly not all damaged or unable to become loving & valuable family members, regardless of their bloodlines or sometimes impaired history from societies neglect.

This is a quick but joyful read that everyone can enjoy. So, come meet Diane’s “pack’ and explore their world of rescue...and then go pick up the phone and volun-teer, foster, or donate to one of these amazing local organizations that are scrambling every day to make a diff erence. There are hundreds upon hundreds of homeless pets here in Alberta, please consider adopt-ing a rescue instead of purchasing your next pet and promote Spaying & Neutering!

My name is Bagel. You are probably thinking that an older Beagle like me may not have that much energy but I am

ALWAYS ready for a walk! Plus I already know how to behave, not like those puppies that need a bunch of training. Give me a chance; seniors need love too after all!

My name is Rubee and I travelled all the way from the Northwest Territories. I may be a senior, but I still have a lot

of love and life to give to a special family. I am quite the cuddler and love to be around people and other dogs. I am truly a fantastic dog, I even know a couple of tricks!

Hi, my name is Thumper, and I want to thump my way into your heart! I am 2yrs old and was sur-rendered in May

because of allergies. I am already spayed which is included as part of my $60 adoption fee! I am an affectionate & litter trained girl who likes to keep a clean kennel.

Hi there, I’m Tweety! I am a sociable 4yr old Budgie that came to the EHS in July be-cause my previous owner

could not devote enough time to properly care for me. There are close to ten other budgies available at the shelter so you may want to take home a buddy for me as well!

Howdy, my name is Paddy and I’m a gor-geous Lab X around 8mths old. I am excel-lent off-leash and I like to swim & retrieve. I also love people & other dogs. I am a confident & energetic boy who would really benefit from a loving but firm home.

In MemoryDakaro was a shy but loving soul who came into SCARS care quite ill. Unfor-tunately nothing could be done to save this poor boy but we know in his short time in rescue that he was well loved and treasured as part of his loving foster family. Please promote rescue and spay & neuter your pets... there are so many unwanted, neglected & homeless pets like Dakaro that deserve to know what a real home is like.

They call me Greta Garbo and no one can believe I’m getting overlooked. I’m already crate, house & leash trained and I’ve outgrown the puppy silliness so your belongings are safe with me! Did I men-tion that I love other dogs and that I’m very social?

I’m a Shepherd X named Adin and I LOVE people. I’m house & crate trained, great on leash and I have good recall & basic man-ners. I am truly a great guy but I will react to dogs that react to me. In other words I do best with laid back & well socialized dogs.

I’m Tina. I am a beautiful Heeler X around 9mths old and I get along great with ev-eryone I meet. I like to go to the off leash park where I LOVE to swim and I listen well when it’s time to leave. I would really love an active home with another dog or two to play with.

Zeppelin here... or Zeppi for short! I’m a 2yr old Shepherd X who loves to go on hikes & quad rides. I’m energetic & playful but I still love snuggle time. I like play-ing with other dogs and just ignore cats. I have LOTS of love to give, if you’re willing to put the time in you won’t be disap-pointed.

Hello, my name is Kaylynne and I am one of the “Kennel E” cats, you can read our story on page 12. I am very pretty as you can see, and once I get to know you I’m a great little kitty that will make a super addition to any family. Our hope when we were rescued was that we’d all find our loving forever homes and people would truly give us our second chance...I am waiting for you.

August/September 2012 local stories...local people...local pets

There was a deathly silence when we entered Kennel E at the Animal Care & Control Centre, broken only by the old black and

white cat with withered ears and a hundred years of turmoil engraved on his face. He rubbed rep-etitiously against his kennel gate as if to receive the aff ection he might once have known. On the other side of the room was a prett y grey tabby and white senior, later to be called Grandma Roxanne, that also used her gate as a form of solace. On the bott om row of kennels was a young, sleek black cat, barely over kitt en stage, with bright crystal eyes and a coat that would refl ect your look. She reached out and cried in the hope we may engage and release her from her confi nement. Everyone else, eight of them to be exact, lay in silence as if they knew that the next day would take their spir-its to the rainbow bridge. There were no names just identity numbers, a sign of how many animals need to be tracked. We bus-ily opened kennel gates and reached out to see the cats’ reactions to our touch. All faired well, but cat number 10090, as the gate opened, pulled back as a steady stream of urine escaped her body. She was friendly, but her fear of the unknown over-came her. The one thing we found missing in the room was a litt le sense of hope. We wrote down their identity numbers and, by the side of each, recorded the cats’ temperaments be-fore we closed the door to Kennel E as we left for the day. Our next job was that of sheer anguish, whom could we take and whom would we have to leave behind. It was a discussion that examined their behaviours, their ages, and their adaptability to meet foster home needs.

We soon realized as we shuffl ed from cat to cat that no cat was perfect, and no cat was imperfect, they wore their own personalities, no diff erent from any of us. Our focus changed from not how the cats could adapt to us in terms of fi tt ing in, but how we could adapt to them. It was decided to take them all and work at fi nding the suitable needs for them. We worked for a few hours and then made plans to meet the next morning at nine a.m. I do not think any one of us went home not wondering how we were going to pull this off , we just knew in our hearts we had to. We placed our faith in the fact that this litt le rag tag bunch of cats would steal the hearts of people and eventually fate would intervene as their new guardians would come to their, and our, aid by adopting them.

The morning started busy for all of us, but as agreed, at nine a.m. we met at the Animal Care & Control Cen-tre. As we walked through the doors our hands full of kennels, like Boxing Day shoppers carrying their loads, we were greeted by the staff who were beaming from ear to ear about the fact that no friendly cats were going to be euthanized - not on this day anyway.

The hallway was quiet leading to Kennel E, but when we opened the door and said good morning, we were greeted by a choir of meows and the feeling of a new sense of life. The cats were more than happy to see us. Even 10090, now called Starlett , seemed more at ease and alert. How did they know? Did they sense our exuberance? Did they sense as we loaded them that, as we closed the door to Kennel E, it would be a new chapter in their lives?

Shelter facilities are full with animals that have been aban-doned or surrendered and face euthanasia. The staff in anmal shelters and control facilities face diffi cult choices

prm

every day, and those choices are not always understood by many as staff do their best at a heartbreaking job.

The truth of the matt er is the responsibility for thousands of animals dying each year is that of the people who take on the commitment of an animal’s life and then do not see it through. There are oft en changes in people’s circumstances that’s life, but those with true compassion and a true love of their animal make it work no matt er how diffi cult circum-stances may be.

When animals are loved for bett er or for worse and are con-sidered part of the family…they truly are pets for life.

Thank you to Dr. West and his staff at The Spay Clinic 10575 – 111 Street for providing the cats with veterinary att ention on such short notice.

I was in the pound and no one came for me... boy was I worried!!! My name is Cyrus and I am an 8mth old, happy-go-lucky, Husky X. My foster mom is very nice and has been great with helping me gain confidence. I am fantastic with cats and other dogs.

I am coming up to 6mths old now and I’m totally house trained. My name is Joplin and I love to play with the resident dog Minnie. Poor Minnie tries to keep me out of trouble because she knows all the rules but sometimes I don’t listen because, after all, I’m still a puppy.

My name is Sydney. When I go to bed at night I put my little paws together and pray someone will adopt me soon and then I drift off to sleep to dream about my new family... oh, how happy I am!!! Then I wake up and nobody has come. Will you make my dreams come true?

I am a 7mth old Shepherd X named Max who loves other dogs. If I were human I’d be the guy lifting weights, walking the circuit & checking out the babes! I would be great at agility but would also enjoy heading to the dog park to check out the lassies & chase butterflies.

The Edmonton Humane Society (EHS) launched a new pro-gram in late June that has not

only benefi ted pets in the Edmonton region, but their owners as well.

Student Annie Guerin recently got a puppy. Living off student loans, Annie was worried about the costs of neuter-ing four month-old Gino. She began exploring online and came across the Society’s new Prevent Another Litt er Subsidy (PALS) Program on the EHS website. She applied, qualifi ed, and her Gino was one of the fi rst pets to take part in PALS.

“It was amazing. The entire staff at the EHS were so accommodating,” says

The PALS Program off ers subsidized spay or neuter surgeries for the pets of low-income owners. The owners must complete an application along with a $50 administration fee to qualify for the program. So far the program has generated a massive response from the public! The Edmonton Humane Society phones are ringing constantly with questions, and applications are steadily coming in.

The EHS is so pleased to be able to of-fer another proactive solution for the

pet overpopulation crisis in Alberta. The PALS Program is slated to spay or neuter 1,300 animals in our commu-nity this year alone. That’s 1,300 cats and dogs that will no longer be pro-ducing kitt ens and puppies that may ultimately have ended up unwanted and seeking shelter with the EHS.

The EHS is grateful to have the PALS Program sponsored in part by Petsmart Charities of Canada, the City of Edmonton and EIDAP Inc. Thanks to the support of our community, sponsors and donors, the Society is able to help with the Edmonton area pet overpopulation problem.

true to Blu’s loving nature; he is now a proud big brother to my 5 month old baby girl. My love for Blu is unconditional; he is my heart, my compan-ion, my best friend. The day we adopted him, he truly came home. I vowed to be his forever home through thick and thin. Not to give him up when the next best thing came along. He’s a fabulous house dog, more like a speed bump re-ally, as we’re constantly stepping over him. He’s a lazy guy. I think he’s an old soul and unfor-tunately he has the body of an old dog as well. He isn’t very agile, he can’t run very fast and he’s far from graceful, but that just adds to his charm. Blu has the most out of control happy tail you have ever seen, he oft en bangs his tail so hard on objects/walls that it bleeds everywhere, you can’t help but laugh and love him even more. I think Blu is a wonderful advocate for rescue, as he is living proof that a litt le love and a whole lot of perseverance and determination can work won-ders. We still learn every day together Blu and I. We face many new challenges and take them on together. Blu will always have a safe place with me, I’ll never hurt him, I’ll never set him up to fail and I will never ever leave him. He will spend the rest of his days being a loved member of our family, no matt er what happens.

It is true, you don’t always get the dog you want, but you always get the dog you need. I needed Blu perhaps even more then he needed me.

Congratulations to Alison and Blu! Come out and meet Blu and check out all the festivities at Doga-palooza 2012 held on November 3, 1012 at the Ice Pal-ace in West Edmonton Mall.

prm

We adopted Blu, a Mastiff x from EHS in May 2009. Aft er seeing him in the shelter with his crooked front legs, bandaged tail and wearing a cone, the deal was sealed. Blu had been adopted out twice before fi nding his forever home with us, both times he was picked up by animal con-trol and never claimed.

Our journey with Blu has been a long one, with many ups and downs. Blu was a dog with a bro-ken spirit when he fi rst came home; he was scared of his own shadow. He constantly thought he would be hit, he cowered away constantly and oft en urinated on the fl oor if he thought he did something wrong. He struggled with massive separation anxiety and couldn’t let us out of his sight. We couldn’t hold it against him though, in 14 months he was on his third family. Blu has been a challenge, but a challenge that we needed. He has taught us the true meaning of uncondi-tional love and shown me patience I never knew I had. Blu has his faults sure, but so do I. He is not the perfect dog to many people, but to me I see perfection through his imperfections. It has taken 3 years to be able to get him to walk nicely on the leash without fl ipping out at other dogs, he still has his moments but he has improved leaps and bounds. He will now approach strangers at the dog park and even lets them give him a pat. He has been wonderful with all the foster dogs that have come through my home; he tolerates all the puppy antics and will always share his bed. His favourite past time is laying in the sun on the warm summer days and baking his old bones, Blu has deformed front legs due to possi-ble rickets as a puppy. He has sore joints and the heat helps. He also enjoys going to daycare and hanging out, daycare has helped him gain some confi dence and come out of his shell, and he’s fi nally learned the art of play. This past summer be learned to swim, it has taken 4 summers for him to work up the courage to actually get in the water and swim, he now loves it. This past year I became pregnant and people of all types made their opinions known loud and clear on what to do with Blu aft er baby came. I had faith in Blu, I knew together we could prove everyone wrong,

Rescue 100

Summer Solstice is my name and being cute is my game! I was born at Rescue 100 and my mother is a beautiful chestnut Quarter Horse. I am now 6mths old though, and ready to be out on my own. Can you help me find my very own forever home?

My name is Salty, and I can add some spice to your life! At only 20yrs old, I’m actually one of the seniors here. When I arrived, I had a mouth injury and was very thin, but now I’m all healed up and gaining weight nicely. Now that I’m ready all I need is a lov-ing new home.

Hello there! Are you looking at me? Let me introduce myself… my name is Promise and I am around 20yrs old. When I was rescued I had a massive wither injury, but the wonderful volun-teers here took very good care of me and now I’m ready to find my new home.

I am over 10yrs old and I was picked up as a stray. My future was uncertain due to my age and that I had a tumor around one eye. Despite all my woes, I am a gentle dog. ARTS had faith that someone would adopt me into their rescue, and sure enough Steph at Ridge Rescue (Lethbridge) came forward. I am now looking for my new forever home.

Hinton & District SPCA

Hello everyone! I am an ador-able 6yr old Pug/Cocker Spaniel X named Pongo. I am great with people but I am aggressive with other dogs so I am looking for a home where I can be your one and only! Do you have room in your home for a fellow like me?

Hello, my name is Memphis and I am a 1yr old ridiculously handsome Lab X. I love to be with other dogs and would be thrilled with a dog friend or two in my new home. I think an acreage home (or active family) that loves giving belly rubs would be perfect.

I’m Bailey! I am a 1.5yr old Shepherd X and I love pretty well everyone – except cats. I need a cat free home please... any-one out there allergic to those furballs that needs a best buddy for life? Please call or come check me out soon, I can’t wait to meet you!

My name is Bear and I am 6yrs old. I am an active & loving Border Collie who can’t wait to find a forever home of my very own. I am a very sweet & affectionate dog who will make a great best friend and keep you laughing. No cats please.

Howdy! They call me Jackson. I am a gorgeous 2yr old Mas-tiff/Husky X who is looking for a good forever home with a loving family. I am well trained, but I haven’t really been around chil-dren so I think I would be best in a home with older kids.

Here I am again...I thought maybe being the cover dog last issue might find me a loving home but sadly no one came for me. My name is Scooby Doo and I am an 8yr young Lab X. I have been in the SPCA for almost a year and I really need a family. I am a really good boy and I get along very well with other dogs but unfortunately I need a home where I am the only dog as I am very protective of food. Isn’t there someone out there that will give me a loving and safe retirement home?

Taking Your New Pet to the Veterinarian with Dr. Heather Steele DVM

Congratulations on the adop-tion of your new friend! Now that you have your

new cat, dog, ferret, rabbit, rodent, bird, or other friend, one of the fi rst things you will want to do is have a check up with your veterinarian to ensure that your pet is healthy and to set up a wellness plan for the future. It is important that you develop a good relationship with your veterinary clinic to allow you to work together as a team in main-taining your pet’s health.

Preparing for the Examination: There are many important pieces of information you should share with your veterinarian to help them determine the true health needs of your pet. Firstly, take a copy of all records you have for your pet in-cluding any previous vaccinations, medical history, and any medica-tions the pet may currently be on. Tell your veterinarian what diet you are currently feeding and volume (including treats and human foods they may be eating). Mention any previous travel history outside of your area, as well as any plans for future travel. Discuss the lifestyle of your pet including whether it will be indoor, outdoor, a combina-tion of both, caged versus free rang-ing, and any contact it will have with other animals and which spe-cies (ie. daycare, boarding, groom-ing, training classes, off leash walks, play dates, house mates). Your vet-erinarian can then use this infor-mation to help you set up a proper wellness plan to maintain the long term health of your friend.

During your examination:Your veterinarian will ask many

questions regarding your pet’s behavior, activity, appetite, and concerns you may wish to address. It is important that you mention any concerns you may have no matt er how small it seems, as minor changes can indicate health con-cerns. Abnormal things you may notice at home can in-clude vomiting or abnormal bowel movements (too hard, too soft , too many or too few), decreased or increased appe-tite, preferentially choosing certain foods (especially if this has changed from previous), coughing, sneezing or breath-ing heavily, decreased activity levels, acting quiet, cranky, or withdrawn, diff erent appearances (fl uff ed up feathers or fur), or changes in how the pet interacts with you or other animals in the home. This in conjunction with the physical examination will help the veterinarian in determining the health status of your pet.

Questions to Ask Your Veterinarian:

Vaccines that are required for your type of pet based on factors such as day care, boarding, travel, and the particular area you live in. You should also discuss a future vaccina-tion schedule.

Exercise needs that are appropriate for your pet. Your veterinarian can determine what is required to maintain a healthy body condition for your pet.

Training required for your pet to have a well adjusted life. This includes what things you can do to help make future veterinary visits less stressful for your pet.

Housing required especially for caged pets which may spend a large amount of time in their enclosure.Emergencies – What are the regular clinic hours for your veterinarian and who should you contact aft er hours if there is an emergency?

Deworming requirements and how oft en should it be re-peated depending on species, whether the pet is indoors or outdoors, and contact with other animals or wildlife.

Dietary needs for the daily care of your pet. It is also im-portant to ask which treats or extras are appropriate for your pet. Dental care required to maintain a healthy mouth through

Nice to meet you, I’m Diego. My name definitely suits me as I love adven-tures and doing my own thing. Sure I like attention, but there are a lot of things

Levi’s the name, and play-ing is my game! Cats, dogs, it doesn’t matter - I’m friends with everyone!

I’m a very active little kitten who is always on the go. I do love a good cuddle though, so when I finally settle down your lap is the best spot in the world!

guess! Regardless, I’m a really sweet girl who loves to cuddle. I get along great with cats and other dogs.

I’m Missy. I had a little run in with a porcupine and that is how I came into rescue. I am a very sweet girl who absolutely

loves people. My tail wags all the time and I enjoy belly rubs. I am house trained and crate trained and would do best as an only pet as I like to rule the roost!

Excuse me... I’m Owen and I’m a real ladies man! I’m still learn-ing my manners, but I’m well on my way. I am full of

love. Speaking of love... I love cuddles. I get along with big and small dogs and I love to run at the dog park.

My name is Purrvis and I am a very handsome boy. I think I look like an orange tiger, and true to my name I purr whenever a friendly person is near. I love to play with other cats but I am just as happy on my own. Do you have a loving home for me?

Hey! Hey! Hey! I am a glossy grey Manx named Steven who needs a good home. Like many of my breed I like to hop rather than walk. I am also a bit shy about being picked up but I come around and will melt in your arms if you pet me gently.

I am Ashes. Everyone really loves my long soft hair and fabulous per-sonality. I love everyone and will be a fantastic buddy for a lucky family. I can hardly wait to meet you, so think it over but please don’t hesitate too long. Call about me today!

I am a little black kitty named Midnight. I grew up in a foster home with my mom and I have super glossy fur. I am a loving little boy who likes to sleep curled up in a ball. I am also quite calm and friendly. I sure hope I get adopted soon.

I’m Bella. I have long gray fur with tan markings around my face and I am super duper friendly. I am also very playful and enjoy sitting on a warm lap for cuddles. I am com-fortable with other cats, children and peaceful dogs.

His name is BAZZINGA…. We call him Bazz…let me just say he is a sur-vivor.

On Friday April 13, 2012, Bazz was found wandering around his commu-nity with his right back leg broken and the femur was protruding from his body. Thankfully, a Second Chance Animal Rescue Society (SCARS) vol-unteer was with a Spay and Neuter Clinic, from the Alberta Spay/Neuter Task Force and was able to ensure he started on the right path for care being destined for greatness. I am forever in her debt.

It was apparent he had a forgiving, sweet behavior but he needed imme-diate veterinarian care. It looked like quite some time ago this injury had occurred…a gun shot! The damage was too extensive to save his leg and at that point his leg was amputated. Now, I was not present during these times but I was told over and over what a sweet att itude he had and how purely forgiving Bazz was. Immedi-ately following surgery he hopped up and walked around on his three legs like it was nothing. The surgery was

Tails From Home

BAZZINGAperformed at Westlock Vet Clinic and the staff loved his calm nature and sweetness.

On June 2, 2012, aft er following his story, I noticed he was at an adoption event in Edmonton. How could I NOT go and see him? To be honest, I was curious how he was doing because his road to recovery was not all roses. He had 5 surgeries in total, with a wound vac to ensure healing. He just looked precious to me.

Let me tell you about the fi rst meet-ing. We approached the adoption cen-tre and I immediately was smitt en. He was beautiful. His golden colour, his smile, the way he was watching the crowd of people amazed me! It truly was love at fi rst site. My daughter and I approached him and the bond was immediate. His tail was wagging and he stumbled over to us. I was head over heels. At that point I knew he was mine.

There was one problem….My hus-band…we did already have 2 dogs. Both were rescues, in which we had high hopes for. I had been looking for a dog to provide pet therapy for se-niors etc. and one of our dogs has an anxiety issue, the other is fear aggres-sive - so much for that idea! I would have to convince my husband that it was a good idea! I asked him to come and meet Bazz at the adoption event. First, he went to the wrong centre (oh yeah, that put him in a good mood!) My husband got out of the car and was

trying to be serious. He had his ‘hock-ey game face’ on! Although he did not think I noticed, I saw soft ness in his face when he saw Bazz. Bazz does that to people. The awe, the empathy for his courage and strength and forgive-ness he emits is profound. We spoke extensively with the foster home and did a trial ‘sleepover’. Hmmm, he never returned to the foster home!

He is ‘one of a kind’, a blessed puppy that will play and frolick and LOVES to bite feet…’talks’ when his brothers get att ention and whines when we go to sleep because he wants to be up on the bed.

He is a dog that sleeps by my side, wags his tail when people walk by, swims like a triathlete and is curious about everything!

We are working toward PET THER-APY designation through Northern Pet Therapy Society of Alberta and everyday is gett ing bett er and bett er. His manners are fabulous with people and he is very tolerant of many things. He loves scratches behind the ears and loves car rides in which he sleeps the entire trip!

Thank you SCARS for in-troducing this puppy to me. We are look-ing forward to many years with him. prm

Tails From Home

HARRYHi, its me Harry! I’m named aft er Dirty Harry, and this picture was of me in jail before SCARS and my wonderful foster Mom rescued me.

I was just a litt le puppy wandering alone at 4 months old. I lived with my foster family for a while and then my forever Mom found me at Sadie’s Stay & Play at an adoption event. She came back three times to rub my belly!!! A week later she was back with my Auntie Kim (whom I love so much) and the next thing I knew I had a brand new home.

My Mom says that I had a big brother named Oliver that passed over the rainbow bridge before I got to meet him....but he picked me out special just for them, and mom says I even sort of look a litt le like him. I have the best life now. I have a nice bed of my own but I get to sleep with Mom

and Dad whenever I want. I also get to swim lots, that’s my favorite thing to do when it’s hot out and I am prett y good at it! I walk with “my pack” every weekend and they are teaching me lots of stuff . Mom says I still have a way to go, but I am only 11 months old and I learn fast. Dad plays ball with me all the time and I chase it really good, but some-times I get distracted and forget to bring it back. I even go to work with Mom the odd time. Car rides are my all time favorite thing to do, even if it is just to the corner. Hehehe... when Mom’s unloading all those yummy groceries I like to just hop in!

I have the best home now and love my Mom and Dad SO much. Thank you SCARS Volunteers for rescuing and fi nd-ing me the perfect forever home! prm

DEXTERDEXTERMy name is Dexter and I want people to know that every life has a purpose. I am an ordinary mixed breed dog that was given a second chance and now I get the opportunity to pay it forward...

Pay It Forward

Do you know what it feels like to be disposed of like gar-bage? I do. In the Spring of

2010, I was driven to a dump and left behind. I wandered the roads but al-ways came back to the dump to forage – I did this for about six months until I was spott ed by a Rescue for Life vol-unteer.

Rescue for Life had no open foster homes but they could not bear the thought of me living in a dump –dogs get hit by cars in this area, dogs get att acked by coyotes, and lots of other bad things happen too.

I was brought into foster care and got my second chance. Initially, it seemed I would be easy to adopt - I was a hand-some, blonde dog. What more could a family want? I was adopted to a won-derful couple who made great eff orts to integrate me into their pack, but it soon became apparent that I was one of those rare dogs that needs some-thing only families with special skills

can off er. A year aft er my fi rst adop-tion, I was returned to Rescue for Life. I was in the foster care system again, but I got a foster mom who knew what I needed. She started training me for search and rescue and I excelled at my new job!

In March 2012, Ava, a Rescue for Life dog that had just been adopted es-caped her new home because she was scared. My foster mom decided this was a perfect job for me. I was given Ava’s scent and off I went to search for her in an area of Edmonton. Guess what? I found Ava’s scent and tracked for several hours until I found her hideout. I helped rescue Ava! She is now happily living with her forever family.

In May 2012, I got a second chance to pay it forward. My foster mom got a call from a close friend who said that a family member had been missing for 48 hours. They were desperate for help so, once again, I was given a scent and off I went tracking in Edmonton.

I tracked for several hours and I came to sit on the edge of a ravine bank in Edmonton. I sat on that bank whim-pering and looking at my foster mom. That was when the Edmonton Police Service was contacted for further as-sistance. That evening the ravine was thoroughly searched and very sadly the body of a young man was found. The family was distraught about their loss but in the days following they thanked my foster mom for helping bring them closure.

I am still in foster with Rescue For Life, and waiting for the right fam-ily to come along that will continue to help me excel in my work so I can become a true Search & Rescue Dog. In the meantime, I’m still working to help people fi nd their lost pets.

You can pay it forward too – please adopt from rescue!
