Who we are.... Symphony in the Valley is a volunteer community orchestra that has been performing in the Roaring Fork Valley and Eagle County since 1993. Players include seasoned semi-professionals, talented amateurs, and young musicians just beginning to learn about the world of classical music. The orchestra presents live classical music concerts at a variety of venues that are affordable and enjoyable for listeners of all ages. Symphony in the Valley fosters a mutually satisfying relationship between musicians and audiences. Players express their musical creativity and passion for performance; audiences enjoy beautiful music while learning about the breadth and depth of classical music. Why we need your support.... Admission tickets cover a large share of the orchestra's costs, but the Symphony in the Valley also depends on the generosity of individuals, businesses, and foundations to present each year's concert season. Behind the scenes, the orchestra pays for equipment and services that make each concert special, including music purchases and specialty arrangements, lighting and sound, piano tuning, storage space, transport, insurance, archive recordings, and insurance. Our music director also earns a modest salary. We support our graduating high school senior musicians by providing them with the opportunity to apply for scholarship funds. These awards are available for the first year of college in which they will be pursuing a career or degree in music. The students receiving the scholarship must have been active in the Symphony in the Valley. Please consider purchasing a season ticket and/or contributing to Friends of the Symphony. Please make checks payable to Symphony in the Valley and give them to an Usher or mail to: PO Box 1831, Glenwood Springs, Colorado 81602. ~ Program Notes ~
Themes from “Scheherazade” Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov
Rimsky-Korsakov’s famous symphonic suite, “Scheherazade,” has been a staple of symphonic literature since it was first written in 1888. Included are the Sultan’s theme, Scheherazade’s theme (for solo violin), “The Story of the Kalendar Prince” theme, and “The Young Prince and the Young Princess” themes.
How Sweet the Sound
Traditional A glorious, reverential arrangement of Amazing Grace that will have special meaning for every listener. This arrangement allows the simple, elegant beauty of the time-honored hymn to shine through.
Romeo and Juliet Overture Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky
When he completed the score to his Romeo and Juliet Overture in 1869, Tchaikovsky was only 29, almost the same age Shakespeare was when he finished writing the play. It was the young composer’s fourth published orchestral piece and stands out among his works as a sudden blaze of inspiration, revealing for the first time the unique genius that the young composer would become. The overture begins with a peaceful hymn-like introduction, representing the kindly Friar Lawrence, friend and advisor to Romeo and Juliet. The peace is soon broken, however, by a fiery “Allegro” depicting the ancient feud between the Montagues and the Capulets. This leads into the famous love music of Romeo and Juliet. After a return to previous themes, a final coda is heard in which the love music is transformed into a tragic lament.
Cumberland Cross
Carl Strommen (ASCAP) Sure to delight, the central portion of this original piece brings the unrestrained exuberance of bluegrass fiddling to the orchestra. In a lovely contrast, the piece opens and closes with a slow chorale, bringing to mind sunset and sunrise over the mountains.
España Cañi - A Spanish Gypsy Dance Pascual Marquina Narro
The paso doble (or paso dobles) is a Spanish couples dance. It is highly stylized and modeled after the entrance of the matador at a bullfight or his passes right before the bull is killed. España Cañi is one of the most famous tunes used for the dance. Written around 1925, it means “Gypsy Spain.”
Feeling Good Anthony Newley and Leslie Bricusse
Written for the musical The Roar of the Greasepaint - The Smell of the Crowd." It was first performed on stage in 1964 by Cy Grant and by Gilbert Price in 1965 with the original Broadway cast. Nina Simone recorded Feeling Good for her 1965 Album I Put a Spell on You. The song has also been covered by Michael Bublé, John Coltrane, George Michael, and the rock band Muse.
Someone to Watch Over Me George Gershwin & Ira Gershwin
This song was composed by George Gershwin with lyrics by Ira Gershwin for the musical Oh, Kay! George originally approached the song as an up-tempo jazz tune, but his brother suggested that it might work much better as a ballad, and George ultimately agreed. It has been performed by many great artists since its debut and is a jazz standard.
Soul Bossa Nova Quincy Jones
This popular instrumental piece was composed and first performed by American impresario, jazz composer, arranger, and record producer Quincy Jones. According to Jones, it only took twenty minutes to compose the piece. It has since been featured in many different Media. Where do you recognize it from?
Duke Ellington! (A Medley for Orchestra)
Sit back and enjoy this Duke Ellington Orchestral Medley. Edward Kennedy Ellington was an American composer, pianist, and bandleader in a career spanning over fifty years. Often collaborating with others, Ellington wrote more than one thousand compositions; his extensive body of work is the largest recorded personal jazz legacy, with many of his works having become standards.
Gershwin in Concert George Gershwin & Ira Gershwin
George and Ira Gershwin will always be remembered as the songwriting team whose voice was synonymous with the sounds and style of the Jazz Age. From 1924 until George's death in 1937, the brothers wrote almost exclusively with each other, composing over two dozen scores for Broadway and Hollywood. Though they had many individual song hits, their greatest achievement may have been the elevation of musical comedy to an American art form. Includes: “I Got Rhythm,” “Someone To Watch Over Me,” “‘S Wonderful,” and “Rhapsody in Blue”
Harry Potter Symphonic Suite John Williams
This medley, based on the endearing themes from the box office smash hit Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, weaves the vivid imagery of the film with varied textures to produce a work that will be loved by all.
