Dogs Can Sniff Out Bowel Cancer

Have you looked on the back page to see if a photo of your dog is on it?

Science Daily (Feb. 1, 2011) — Dogs can sniff out bowel cancer in breath and stool samples, with a very high degree of accuracy — even in the early stages of the disease — reveals research published online in the journal Gut.

The findings prompt the authors to suggest that chemical compounds for specific cancers circulate throughout the body, which opens up the prospect of developing tests to pick up the disease before it has had the chance to spread elsewhere.

AspeciallytrainedLabrador retriever completed74snifftests,each comprising five breath (100 to 200ml) or stoolsamples(50ml)atatime, only one of which was cancerous, over a period of several months. The samples camefrom48peoplewithconfirmedbowelcancerand258volunteerswithnobowel cancer or who had had cancer inthepast.Aroundhalfofthevolunteersamples came from people with bowel polyps, which although benign, are considered to be a precursor of bowel cancer.And6%ofthebreathsamplesand one in 10 of the stool samples from this group came from those with other gut problems, such as inflammatory bowel disease, ulcers, diverticulitis, and appendicitis. The bowel cancer samples came from patients with varying stages of disease, including early stage.

The dog successfully identified which samples were cancerous, and which

werenot,in33outof36breathtestsandin37outof38stooltests,withthehighestdetection rates among those samples taken from people with early stage disease.Thisequatesto95%accuracy,overall,forthebreathtestand98%accuracy for the stool test, compared with conventional colonoscopy — a procedure involving a tube with a camera on the end inserted through the back passage.

Samples from smokers or from those with other types of gut problems, which might

be expected to mask or interfere with other smells, did not pose a problem for the dog. This indicates that there are specific discernible odours given off by cancer cells which circulate around the body, say theauthors.Anditisbackedup by other research and anecdotal evidence indicating

that dogs can sniff out bladder, skin, lung, breast and ovarian cancers, they add.

The authors concede that using dogs to screen for cancers is likely to be impractical and expensive, but a sensor could be developed to detect the specific compounds. The faecal occult blood test, which picks up hidden blood in a stool sampleisaneffectiveandnon-invasivemethod of screening for bowel cancer, say the authors, but it is only able to pick upearlystagediseaseinonein10cases.”Early detection and early treatment are critical for the successful treatment of cancer and are excellent means for reducing both the economic burden and mortality[ofbowelcancer],”commentthe authors.

Some people wait a lifetime for a miracle… But we raise them… one puppy at a time.BeautifulandquirkyCompanionDog,Wanda, hasmade paw prints on the heart of three year old, Jordan forever.

Wanda lends a helping paw and opens the door to a more independent life for Jordan, who suffers with muscular dystrophy. Wanda is there to pick toys Jordan has dropped, she is there to open and close the fridge, drawers and doors and she is there as Jordan’s best friend, providing companionship and love. She makes Jordan smile with just a wag of her tail.

“Wanda has been fantastic. She gives Jordan more independence because when she’s playing or drops things,Wandaistheretohelpher,”Natalie,Jordan’smum said.

Acupuncture for DogsThe history of veterinary acupuncture dates backmorethan4000years,withitsroots

China.Australiaadoptedthisalternativetreatment decades ago for use in both domestic and exotic animals.

Additionally, theWorldHealthOrganization(WHO)hasofficiallyrecognisedacupunctureasan effective treatment for many conditions and diseases.Usuallypain-free,thistherapycanbeused to treat many common and uncommon ailments in dogs, and can be used as a sole treatment or alongside conventional medicine to obtain an optimum result.

WHAT IS ACUPUNCTURE?Acupunctureistheuseofthinneedlesappliedto various points of the body, producing biological and physiological stimulation. This process is based on the principle that the life energy that flows from organs can be disturbed byillhealthorinjury.Knownas“Qi”or“Chi”,thisflow of energy can be restored by inserting thin needles into certain points along the energy path.

Acupuncturehasbeennotedtobeparticularly useful in the relief of pain, and can be used in the treatment of almost any diseaseorcondition.“Acupunctureisanancient procedure used in Traditional Chinese Medicine, whichoftenusesherbs, dietandexercisetoassistthebodyinhealing,”saysDrMeganSemple, aveterinaryacupuncturistof seven years. Kristine Edwards, a qualified animal physiotherapist of 20 years, who has been practising acupuncture on animals for 10 years, agrees adding that acupuncture aids the strengthening of the immune system. “Acupunctureisaholistictreatmentandhelpsto promote healing, not just pain relief, as some maybelieve,”shetellsDogsLife.AccordingtoSemple, treatments stimulate nerves, increase blood circulation, relieve muscle spasms and cause the release of hormones. “Treatments release hormones, such as endorphins (one of thebody’spain-controlchemicals)orcortisol(anaturalsteroid).However,cortisolisless-commonly aimed for and lots of other, more beneficial, hormonesarereleasedfirst,”shesays.

COMMONLY TREATED CONDITIONSSemple says acupuncture can be used to treat a wide range of conditions, but about 70 per cent are musculoskeletal. Due to this, she says she finds a higher representation of particular breeds. “This may be because the breeds are more common or the injuries are more common in them, but we do see lots of Labradors, German Shepherds, Collies and Terriers of all sorts, aswellasGreyhounds,”shesays.“Themost common conditions we see are cruciate tears, back disease or pain, hip dysplasia and elbow dysplasia.

OtherrecentcasesIhavehadgreatresultswith include kidney failure, seizures and lick granulomas(skinlesions).Acupunctureisdesigned to realign the body, so it can help a wide range of diseases and is exceptionally good for pain control and healing. ”Acupuncturecanalsobehelpfulintreatingparalysis, asthma, gastrointestinal disorders, head trauma, respiratory problems, urinary disorders, dermatological problems and certain reproductive problems. Edwards says arthritis, injuries, neck and back pain can all be treated with acupuncture and it can also be helpful post-surgery.

TREATMENT Sessions are usually between five and 20 minutes’ duration, depending on the dog’s tolerance and condition, Edwards explains. Usually painless, the patient will have a small awareness as the needles enter. The most difficult task during the session is keeping the dogrelativelyquietandstill“Mostconditionscannot be cured with just one session, but it is possibletoseeimprovementfromonevisit,”shesays.Sempleagrees, adding,“Mostconditionsinvolve a course of treatments, three to six treatments,orlong-termmanagementforconditions such as hip dysplasia.

time and frequency of treatment in chronic cases.“Forexample,”explainsSemple,“anacute sprain may require only one treatment, whereas more severe or chronic ailments may requiremultipletreatments.Apositiveresponseis often seen after the first to third treatment in chroniccases.Onceanoptimumresponseisachieved, treatments are tapered off so the greatestamountofsymptom-freetimeelapsesbetweenthem.”

Aphysicalexaminationshouldalwaystakeplace before acupuncture treatments are conducted. This is usually conducted over two levels; the standard, Western medical examination (one your vet would have already provided) followed by a Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM)examination.DuringtheTCMexamination, pulses and special alarm points on the body are checked to assist in isolating the link between different changes in the body.

Semple says acupuncture does not always involveneedles.“Otherformsincludelaser, aquapuncture (liquid needling) and gold beads.Asageneralrule, veryfewdrugsareused, but acupuncture is often safely used in conjunction with Western medicines to provide themostcomfortandbestpossibleoutcome,”she says.

WHEN TO AVOID ACUPUNCTURE AccordingtobothSempleandEdwards, there aren’t any dangers for canine patients receivingacupuncturetreatments.Bothdo, however, advise seeking out a qualified, competent practitioner to reduce any risks and obtain appropriate advice before embarking on a treatment plan .While there aren’t any immediate dangers involved, older patients can find the remedy very tiring, and it may not be the most appropriate therapy for certain conditions.

It is also advised not to treat patients with open wounds or infection. The alternative approach While there is a lot of research and science behind why acupuncture works, the most important thing to remember is that it is a natural treatment. The results can be quite amazing and it has no risk of major side effects, unlikemanyconventionalmedications-forexample, liver or kidney damage brought on by theuseofananti-inflammatory.“Thereisverylittle to lose by giving it a try, and I have seen many dogs that have been saved by the use of acupuncture,”Semplesays.

The Mystery Mutt

Quote Of The Month“Dogs truly are human kinds helpmate, amongst many roles.

Theyworkassheepherders,guidedogsandsearchandrescuedogs.”

MEMBERS’ GUESSING COMPETITION No. 12

The origin of this breed is a bit of a mystery, there seems to be little doubt that they are closely related to other spitz dogs;

in fact, it is widely thought that the spitz breeds are descended fromthisdog.TheyprobablycamefromMongoliaandManchuria, wheretheirmeatwasonceadelicacyandtheirfurwas used for clothing, then introduced to China. Centuries ago they were used to guard the temples against evil spirits. The dog was also used as a hunting dog by the aristocrats, a guard dog against intruders, sled and cart pullers and as watchdogs. It first arrivedinBritainin1780.

The dog is a short, compact squarely built dog. The tail is curled over the back. The inside of the mouth and the tongue are blue/black in colour. They have a short, abundant and dense coat. They move with a stilted and stiff legged gait.

The breed comes in a wide range of different colours, cream/white, fawn, red, blue and black.

Dogsmeasure48-56cmsatthewithersandweighbetween26and32kgs.Bitchesmeasure46-51cmsatthewithersandweighbetween20and25kgs.

The dog is naturally an aloof dog and can be stubborn with it. They can become attached to one person and do have a tendency to snap or bite if they feel they or their owner is threatened. They may look like a cuddly teddy bear but they are not. They are relatively quiet dogs that alsomakegoodguards.Aslongastheyareintroducedtocatsandotherhouseholdpetswhenyoung, problems can be prevented.

The breed is relatively easy to train but they like to know what they are doing and the reason for it. They are very clean dogs and are therefore very easy to housetrain. They do have a tendency to be stubborn and need to be trained by someone who knows what they are doing. They must be socialised from a very early age as they can become willful and unmanageable otherwise. Asabreedtheyarequitebiddablebutarenotrenownedfortheirgreatobedience.

Prisoner Of War

Sponsored by Hon David Brown (Patron)Sponsored by Hon David Brown (Patron)

Heard the one about the dog that was OFFICIALLY made a prisoner of war? Ray Hearn discovers some of the amazing stories about dogs involved in conflict.

She was a pedigree Pointercalled“Judy”

and she is one of a number of distinguished dogs recognised for duty during major wars and urban conflicts. The remarkable stories of these dogs are demonstrated in an exhibition inLondon, organisedbytheBritishKennelClub, called“DogsinWar”.

Judy’s story began in her birthplace, the city of Shanghai,backin1936.Althoughhercareerwastobelongandillustrious,duetoanear-catastrophe it nearly ended before it began.

JudybecameamascotfortheRoyalNavybutshe nearly died when she fell overboard from a navalvesselintotheYangtzeRiver. However, thiswas to be the first of many narrow escapes.

WAR TRAVELS In1942,Judywentto war when she became a mascot foranotherRoyalNavyshipHMSGrasshopper — which took part in a number of actionsduringtheMalay-Singaporecampaign.When Singapore fell, Judy’s ship made for Java, Indonesia, but just as it got there, it was bombed by Japanese aircraft and the crew beached their ship on an uninhabited island.

Lucky Judy was aboard, as they may not have survived if it hadn’t been for her presence. She was a great help in rescuing the crew, first by getting them ashore and then finding water.

Afterseveraldays,theywerepickedupbyaChinesejunk-boatandtakentoSumatra,

Indonesia.Fromthere, theBritishsurvivorsdecidedtotrytogettoPadangbuttheirluckdeserted them. They had nearly reached their destination when they were taken prisoner and thecrew—andJudy—beganatwo-yearordeal at a Japanese prison camp in a placed calledMedan.

Here,JudyappearstohavedesertedherformernavalmastersforamemberoftheRoyalAirForce. She“adopted”LeadingAircraftsmanFrankWilliams,(picturedbelow)butJudywasnot content just to sit out and wait for the war’s end. She proved her worth inside her prison by warning other captives of poisonous snakes, alligators and even the odd tiger.

The Japanese Camp Commandant, however, wasnotimpressedbyallofthis.HewantedthePointeroutoftheway—permanently.Luckily,FrankWilliamshadaplan.Hemanagedto get his Japanese captor very drunk and whileinthatstate,Frankwasabletomakethe Commandant register his pet as an official PrisonerofWar.

Later, orders came through that all the prisoners had to be taken to Singapore and the Japanese were not going to allow Judy to go withthem.ButFrankWilliamswashavingnoneofthat.Hehidhisfaithfulcompanioninaricesack, ordering her to keep absolutely quiet, and she did. She was held in this state for nearly threehoursanddidn’twhineonce!

Onceonboardtheship,FrankreleasedJudyfrom her temporary home, but again fate playedacruelhand.AtorpedohittheirvesselandFrank,Judyandanumberofothersfoundthemselves trapped under wreckage. Just as

Judy escaped, another torpedo hit. Luckily, this explosion actually freed the trapped men, releasingthemfromwhatwasleftofthewar-torn vessel. It seemed Judy was not only brave, but she also had a sense of luck about her.

Forthenexttwohourstheirliveshunginthebalance as they drifted in the sea. Eventually theywereallwerepickedupbutFrankandJudy became separated. Three days later the pair were back together again while travelling to yet another prison camp.

PRISONER OF WAR Overthenextfewmonths,FrankandJudywere moved from one prison camp to another and then once again, fate stepped in. The pair found themselves face to face with an old adversary — the original Camp Commandant fromMedanwhohadwantedJudydead.Furious, possiblybecause of the trick that had been played on him, and seeing Judy still alive and well, he ordered thedogtobekilled.Butthatwasnotall.Healsodemandedthattheprisonersshouldeather!Itdidn’tlookgoodforJudyorFrank.However,bythistime,thewarwasnot going well for the Japanese and the camp soldiers, possibly fearing the future, didn’t carry out the sentence. Judy’s luck had rescued her yetagain!

WiththeendofWWII,FrankWilliamswasfinallyreleasedandwasorderedhometoBritain, buthe was determined that Judy should go with him — and that’s exactly what happened.

InBritain,Judybecamequiteacelebrityand her status was enhanced when she was invitedtotheReturnedBritishPrisonersofWarAssociationinLondonandwasdulyregisteredas the only dog member. She was also awarded theDickinMedal—theBritishanimalmedalwhichisequivalenttotheBritishVictoriaCross, the highest decoration given to any member of the armed forces.

In1948,JudyaccompaniedFranktoAfricatobegin a new life, but two years later she went missing. She was tracked down to a native’s hut, but she was now very ill. and she is one of a number of distinguished dogs recognised for duty during major wars and urban conflicts.

Themedalhadthefollowingengraving:“Formagnificentcourageandendurancein Japanese prison camps which helped to maintain morale among her fellow prisoners, and also for saving many lives through her intelligenceandwatchfulness.”

In1948,JudyaccompaniedFranktoAfricatobegin a new life, but two years later she went missing. She was tracked down to a native’s hut, but she was now very ill. She had developed a tumor and sadly had to be put to sleep during February1950.FrankWilliamsarrangedforJudyto be buried nearhisAfricanhome and had a bronze plaque specially made for her grave, detailing all her heroic acts.

MEMBERS’ GUESSING COMPETITION No. 12

The origin of this breed is a bit of a mystery, there seems to be little doubt that they are closely related to other spitz dogs;

in fact, it is widely thought that the spitz breeds are descended fromthisdog.TheyprobablycamefromMongoliaandManchuria, wheretheirmeatwasonceadelicacyandtheirfurwas used for clothing, then introduced to China.

Dogs Can Sniff Out Bowel Cancer

Have you looked on the back page to see if a photo of your dog is on it?

• Whenyoufeeldog-tiredatnight,itmaybebecauseyou’vegrowledalldaylong!
