Every 2 years the National agility event is held in a different state of Australia. This year NSW
was the host state and the event was held at the Sydney equestrian centre. With over 700 competitors (from all over Australia and New Zealand) and more than 6000 runs this event was huge, in fact the largest agility nationals yet. All breeds of dogs are able to enter. Each event was run in separate height categories, which means if your dog measures 300mm it only has to compete against other dogs of the same height.
Judges from every state and New Zealand were invited to set courses and judge this event.
Dogs could be entered in Agility- an event which has a dog walk, A frame and weaves , Jumping-a course which has jumps and tunnels and agility games gamblers and snooker also strategic pairs ( 2 dogs working together to complete the course.
Dogs compete at their level attained so far, Novice the entry level- after 3 passes at this level you can enter Excellent- after 5 passes at this level you can enter Masters. ). Two other events available to enter were open jumping and agility. In this class dogs at all levels can compete against each other, hence Open.
Being such a big event dog heights were run on different days. 5 rings were allocated- 3 outdoor and 2 indoors allowing competitors to compete in all rings over the 5 days.
At the conclusion of the event dogs which had
placed in their heats competed in the finals. Each state and New Zealand also had selected teams to compete in the final event of the Nationals the Teams event.
Nicola Read and I were privileged to enter the Nationals agility. Nicola has 3 Labradoodles, Coogee 13, Puzzle 7 and Crumpet who is a young puppy in training. Both Coogee and Puzzle competed on Friday in Agility Masters and Jumping Masters and they had clear runs (clear runs means no mistakes and within the course times set by the judge). On the Sat Puzzle ran clear in both events and Coogee ran clear in agility.
Eisha my Boxer ran on Wednesday in gamblers, Agility Novice and Jumping Excellent. Eisha ran clear in gamblers and made 1 mistake in her other events. We competed again on the Friday

Goodbye to BebsonIt’s a sad goodbye for us all but mainly Leanne and David who had to say goodbye to their Beautiful Boxer Boy Benson! Everyone who met Benson fell in love with him me included and fortunately I had a few cuddles with him the day before he was put to sleep, Benson was like an older Gentleman with manners to suit and did not have a bad bone in his body and so gentle with everybody he will be sadly missed by all, Leanne fed him a bar of chocolate that he loved so much (but was not allowed to eat) that the vet found for her! he munched through that then went for his long sleep in his mums arms! RIP Benson Gorgeous Boy.

LIVER TRAINING TREATS
Ingredients:1 ½ cups oat flour
1 cup rolled oats
1 cup oat bran
2 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. cinnamon
1 egg lightly beaten
¼ cup honey
3 Tbl. Vegetable oil
¾ cup milk
Optional ingredients:Apples/banana’s blended together shredded
Zucchini and carrots/nuts shredded
Cheddar/jack cheese cooked chicken
Ingredients:About 500g liver (beef or chicken)
3 - 4 tsp of crushed or minced or fresh garlic
Directions:•Preheatovento200degrees
•Linemuffintinswithfoil/papermuffinforms.
•Mixdryingredients.
•Inaseparatebowl,mixtheegg,honeyandoil.
•Mixthemilkinwiththedryingredients,blendingwell. At this point mix your “optional” ingredients into the honey mixture,then mix the honey mixture into the flour/milk batter.
•Putinmuffintinsandbakefor15-20minutes.
These muffins freeze well.
Directions:•Placeliver&garlic intoamicrowavecasseroledishand
cover with water.
•Cookonhighfor5to10min.,oruntilliverhasnomoreblood.
•Takeliveroutofwaterandsliceinto1cmthickslices.
•Placeontoabakingtrayandbakeat200degreesfor20-30 min. or until slightly dried.
•Leavetocool.Storeinairlightcontainer,canbefrozen.

and the Saturday in Agility and Jumping again 1 mistake in each event.
On the Saturday the weather was wet but lucky for us we were to compete in the indoor arena. The sounds and the ground were very different. Our dogs were as
excited as us to run at this event.
On the Sunday Nicola was in the finals with Puzzle where they ran clear coming 7th. How great is that.
A fantastic experience, at a fantastic event. By the way NSW won the teams event by 1 point.

How to Start a FightOne year, I decided to buy my mother-
in-law a cemetery plot as a Christmas gift. The next year, I didn’t buy her a gift. When she asked me why, I replied, “Well, you still haven’t used the gift I bought you last year!” And that’s how the fight started.
I took my wife to a restaurant. The waiter, for some reason, took my order first. “I’ll
have the rump steak, rare, please.” He said, “Aren’t you worried about the mad cow?” “No, she can order for herself.” And that’s when the fight started.
Saturday morning I got up early, quietly dressed, made my lunch, and slipped
quietly into the garage. I hooked up the boat up to the van and proceeded to
back out into a torrential downpour. The wind was blowing 50kph, so I pulled back into the garage, turned on the radio, and discovered that the weather would be bad all day.
I went back into the house, quietly undressed, and slipped back into bed. I cuddled up to my wife’s back; now with a different anticipation, and whispered, “The weather out there is terrible.”
My loving wife of 5 years replied, “And, can you believe my stupid husband is out fishing in that?” And that’s how the fight started.
Free to Good HomeOur house was broken
into last night by two robbers who locked me in the bathroom, and then proceeded to steal all they could carry. Our watchdog ‘Killer’ did not alert us at all, and for this reason we are giving him away.
We no longer want this dog. We’ve decided on installing an electric fence and detection devices with alarms. They’re cheaper to maintain and definitely more reliable.
For those interested in adopting this dog, please send an e-mail immediately.
‘Killer’ is fun to hang out with, but otherwise pretty useless.

Upcoming EventsObedience and Agility Trial ResultsThe next big event is obviously our own
Obedience Trial which is on July the 14th. 2012 and we really want this to be a great Trial.
My husband Bill Sweeney and myself are the Trial Managers with Robyn Assar the Trial Secretary but you need a lot more people to run a Trial. There is a lot of work involved but it helps bring members closer together and to be honest we have a great time too. We need stewards for our rings (6 rings with 2-3 stewards per ring) to help the judges and of course keep the rings running smoothly. You don’t need to be experienced to be a steward as we have lots of stewards who have a lot of experience; some may have only started doing it last year but we put a mixture of
experienced and new helpers together. Everyone has a sit down lunch (free) and a small thank you gift as well on the day. We have 20 raffle prizes on sale before and during the Trial (our club has the most raffle prizes than any club we have trialled at and that is a lot of clubs believe me). Any member who wants to Trial their dog on the day can do that too as well as steward or help with morning tea, sell raffle tickets or any other jobs that needs doing on the day. The Trial is held at Erskin Park with loads of parking. If interested please either tell Bill at Training or email me at [email protected]
Club Members ShopAs most of you will know we have a club members shop (a large
table) just outside the clubhouse. Myself and Lynn Forwood run it but if we are not at training, Wally our table manager or an instructor will help you, just ask?
We now have beautiful Club Polo Shirts and light Jackets at the moment. Paul Kelly is looking after them and some of us, me included, have already bought some. They are so comfortable to wear.

Well June started with a fantastic weekend Bill and I had at the
Newcastle Obedience Trial and I was so proud of my man and Marla. It was two trials on the Saturday an AM and PM then another AM on the Sunday so we camped on. They are such a lovely club with really nice people and I was the NSW Dog Rep for all three trials so it worked out well.

The Mystery MuttHi everyone and welcome to winter brrr. To those of you who have joined the club since Christmas
and don’t know me, as I have had surgery and not the best, my name is Ella Sweeney and I also Treasurer of the club.
I do the newsletter each month and hope everyone is enjoying reading it as much as I am writing and editing it? I am always looking for members, whether you have just joined or been with us a while, to write their story about their life with their canine friend or friends. It can be now or another dog they had as a child. With a club our size in numbers you would be surprised how hard it is to get members to write their story, but as everyone says they love that part of the newsletter I would like to keep that in each issue. So, if you would like to help me just write down some of the memories from your clever, funny, or naughty canine with a couple of photos and email them to me at [email protected].

MEMBERS’ GUESSING COMPETITION No. 22
Centuries ago this breed was popular in France and Spain. The dog has been depicted in portraits of the royal families of both countries. This type dog were developed on different islands in the Mediterranean and Tenerife The Bichon of Malta (known as the Maltese today) is a close relative. 14th century sailors are thought to have taken them over to Europe from Tenerife. In the 18th century the royal whims turned to other dogs and the dogs became the dogs for commoners but their winsome ways and agility soon brought them fame as circus dogs and organ-grinders’ dogs. After World War 1, the servicemen took a liking to these little dogs and, once again, the French breeders took notice of them. In 1934, a standard was drawn up and the breed was renamed by the president of the International Canine Federation, Madame Nizet de Leemans.
Well-balanced dogs with smart appearances, they are small, solid dogs. Their jet black eyes and noses contrast against their snow-white coats and their tails are like plumes which are curved and carried over their backs. Their silken coats which consist of spirally formed hair give them the appearance of powder puffs. Their bouncy stride gives them a happy, carefree presence.
The colouring of this breed is always snow white.
These are lively, happy little dogs who adore family life and, as such, make ideal children’s pets. They love to accompany the family on all outings but can be left alone occasionally. They socialise well and are fine in the company of other dogs and pets in the household.
These are bright little dogs who quickly catch on to what you want them to do therefore there is no real problem training them.

Teaching your dog to come is an extremely important command, especially if his/her safety is at risk if they do
not comply. There are some huge mistakes people make when calling their dogs to come. They ask their dogs to come when there is no way it’s going to happen. If your dog is chasing the neighbour’s cat, he will not respond to your calling and it’s unreasonable for you to expect him to. In fact, calling him to come at such a time will let the dog know that you can’t control what he does and that he doesn’t have to obey you straight away.It’s better to go and get him rather than call him and have him not come. When the dog does finally come back, or when we go and get him, we punish him. BIG, BIG mistake. Why would the dog ever come to you if he thought he was going to get into trouble? He will not associate your anger with his non-compliance, all he knows is that he’s with you and you’re yelling at him. The only time you call your dog to come is to put the lead back on and go home. The dog will learn that coming to you equals the end of the fun he is having. Combat this by calling your dog to you a number of times during his off leash time, just to give him a reward then let him go again. So how do we teach come? There are plenty of things you can do to get your dog to come to you – crouch down, hold out a treat, run in the other direction, make an interesting noise. When the pup is coming towards you say “come”, and when he gets all the way in to you, reward and release.Then all you need to do is increase the distance, then add distractions. Remember to keep the dog on lead so that
you have success at each attempt. If he doesn’t want to come to you or gets distracted on the way in, use the lead to gently reel the puppy in. Add distractions by getting a friend to walk close to the puppy or make a distracting noise while you are practicing the command. Then practice in an unfamiliar or exciting place. Once you are getting consistent results using a long lead or rope, take away the distractions and start teaching off lead. Teaching off lead recalls the fastest and most fun way is by running away from your dog. This appeals to his prey instinct and he will be more than happy to chase you. Tell him stay, take his lead off and walk to a reasonable distance, then call him to come and immediately turn and run away from him. When he catches you give him a reward and heaps of praise. He will soon associate coming to you with fun and play and rewards. If you find your dog is coming in but you would like it to be faster, then try this: 2 dogs, 1 treat. Get the two dogs to sit next to each other, tell both to stay and walk to a distance. Show them the treat and call them both to come. The one that gets to you first gets the treat and the other will learn to be faster next time.But remember this – no dog will ever be completely trustworthy off lead, there are just too many things that you cannot control.

Teaching your dog to come is an extremely important command, especially if his/her safety is at risk if they do
not comply. There are some huge mistakes people make when calling their dogs to come. They ask their dogs to come when there is no way it’s going to happen. If your dog is chasing the neighbour’s cat, he will not respond to your calling and it’s unreasonable for you to expect him to. In fact, calling him to come at such a time will let the dog know that you can’t control what he does and that he doesn’t have to obey you straight away.It’s better to go and get him rather than call him and have him not come. When the dog does finally come back, or when we go and get him, we punish him. BIG, BIG mistake. Why would the dog ever come to you if he thought he was going to get into trouble? He will not associate your anger with his non-compliance, all he knows is that he’s with you and you’re yelling at him. The only time you call your dog to come is to put the lead back on and go home. The dog will learn that coming to you equals the end of the fun he is having. Combat this by calling your dog to you a number of times during his off leash time, just to give him a reward then let him go again. So how do we teach come? There are plenty of things you can do to get your dog to come to you – crouch down, hold out a treat, run in the other direction, make an interesting noise. When the pup is coming towards you say “come”, and when he gets all the way in to you, reward and release.Then all you need to do is increase the distance, then add distractions. Remember to keep the dog on lead so that
you have success at each attempt. If he doesn’t want to come to you or gets distracted on the way in, use the lead to gently reel the puppy in. Add distractions by getting a friend to walk close to the puppy or make a distracting noise while you are practicing the command. Then practice in an unfamiliar or exciting place. Once you are getting consistent results using a long lead or rope, take away the distractions and start teaching off lead. Teaching off lead recalls the fastest and most fun way is by running away from your dog. This appeals to his prey instinct and he will be more than happy to chase you. Tell him stay, take his lead off and walk to a reasonable distance, then call him to come and immediately turn and run away from him. When he catches you give him a reward and heaps of praise. He will soon associate coming to you with fun and play and rewards. If you find your dog is coming in but you would like it to be faster, then try this: 2 dogs, 1 treat. Get the two dogs to sit next to each other, tell both to stay and walk to a distance. Show them the treat and call them both to come. The one that gets to you first gets the treat and the other will learn to be faster next time.But remember this – no dog will ever be completely trustworthy off lead, there are just too many things that you cannot control.

and don’t know me, as I have had surgery and not the best, my name is Ella Sweeney and I also Treasurer of the club.
I do the newsletter each month and hope everyone is enjoying reading it as much as I am writing and editing it? I am always looking for members, whether you have just joined or been with us a while, to write their story about their life with their canine friend or friends. It can be now or another dog they had as a child. With a club our size in numbers you would be surprised how hard it is to get members to write their story, but as everyone says they love that part of the newsletter I would like to keep that in each issue. So, if you would like to help me just write down some of the memories from your clever, funny, or naughty canine with a couple of photos and email them to me at [email protected].

MEMBERS’ GUESSING COMPETITION No. 22
Centuries ago this breed was popular in France and Spain. The dog has been depicted in portraits of the royal families of both countries. This type dog were developed on different islands in the Mediterranean and Tenerife The Bichon of Malta (known as the Maltese today) is a close relative. 14th century sailors are thought to have taken them over to Europe from Tenerife. In the 18th century the royal whims turned to other dogs and the dogs became the dogs for commoners but their winsome ways and agility soon brought them fame as circus dogs and organ-grinders’ dogs. After World War 1, the servicemen took a liking to these little dogs and, once again, the French breeders took notice of them. In 1934, a standard was drawn up and the breed was renamed by the president of the International Canine Federation, Madame Nizet de Leemans.
Well-balanced dogs with smart appearances, they are small, solid dogs. Their jet black eyes and noses contrast against their snow-white coats and their tails are like plumes which are curved and carried over their backs. Their silken coats which consist of spirally formed hair give them the appearance of powder puffs. Their bouncy stride gives them a happy, carefree presence.
The colouring of this breed is always snow white.
These are lively, happy little dogs who adore family life and, as such, make ideal children’s pets. They love to accompany the family on all outings but can be left alone occasionally. They socialise well and are fine in the company of other dogs and pets in the household.
These are bright little dogs who quickly catch on to what you want them to do therefore there is no real problem training them.

Upcoming EventsObedience and Agility Trial ResultsThe next big event is obviously our own
Obedience Trial which is on July the 14th. 2012 and we really want this to be a great Trial.
My husband Bill Sweeney and myself are the Trial Managers with Robyn Assar the Trial Secretary but you need a lot more people to run a Trial. There is a lot of work involved but it helps bring members closer together and to be honest we have a great time too. We need stewards for our rings (6 rings with 2-3 stewards per ring) to help the judges and of course keep the rings running smoothly. You don’t need to be experienced to be a steward as we have lots of stewards who have a lot of experience; some may have only started doing it last year but we put a mixture of
experienced and new helpers together. Everyone has a sit down lunch (free) and a small thank you gift as well on the day. We have 20 raffle prizes on sale before and during the Trial (our club has the most raffle prizes than any club we have trialled at and that is a lot of clubs believe me). Any member who wants to Trial their dog on the day can do that too as well as steward or help with morning tea, sell raffle tickets or any other jobs that needs doing on the day. The Trial is held at Erskin Park with loads of parking. If interested please either tell Bill at Training or email me at [email protected]
Club Members ShopAs most of you will know we have a club members shop (a large
table) just outside the clubhouse. Myself and Lynn Forwood run it but if we are not at training, Wally our table manager or an instructor will help you, just ask?
We now have beautiful Club Polo Shirts and light Jackets at the moment. Paul Kelly is looking after them and some of us, me included, have already bought some. They are so comfortable to wear.

Well June started with a fantastic weekend Bill and I had at the
Newcastle Obedience Trial and I was so proud of my man and Marla. It was two trials on the Saturday an AM and PM then another AM on the Sunday so we camped on. They are such a lovely club with really nice people and I was the NSW Dog Rep for all three trials so it worked out well.

How to Start a FightOne year, I decided to buy my mother-
in-law a cemetery plot as a Christmas gift. The next year, I didn’t buy her a gift. When she asked me why, I replied, “Well, you still haven’t used the gift I bought you last year!” And that’s how the fight started.
I took my wife to a restaurant. The waiter, for some reason, took my order first. “I’ll
have the rump steak, rare, please.” He said, “Aren’t you worried about the mad cow?” “No, she can order for herself.” And that’s when the fight started.
Saturday morning I got up early, quietly dressed, made my lunch, and slipped
quietly into the garage. I hooked up the boat up to the van and proceeded to
back out into a torrential downpour. The wind was blowing 50kph, so I pulled back into the garage, turned on the radio, and discovered that the weather would be bad all day.
I went back into the house, quietly undressed, and slipped back into bed. I cuddled up to my wife’s back; now with a different anticipation, and whispered, “The weather out there is terrible.”
My loving wife of 5 years replied, “And, can you believe my stupid husband is out fishing in that?” And that’s how the fight started.
Free to Good HomeOur house was broken
into last night by two robbers who locked me in the bathroom, and then proceeded to steal all they could carry. Our watchdog ‘Killer’ did not alert us at all, and for this reason we are giving him away.
We no longer want this dog. We’ve decided on installing an electric fence and detection devices with alarms. They’re cheaper to maintain and definitely more reliable.
For those interested in adopting this dog, please send an e-mail immediately.
‘Killer’ is fun to hang out with, but otherwise pretty useless.

On the Saturday the weather was wet but lucky for us we were to compete in the indoor arena. The sounds and the ground were very different. Our dogs were as
excited as us to run at this event.
On the Sunday Nicola was in the finals with Puzzle where they ran clear coming 7th. How great is that.
A fantastic experience, at a fantastic event. By the way NSW won the teams event by 1 point.

LIVER TRAINING TREATS
Ingredients:1 ½ cups oat flour
1 cup rolled oats
1 cup oat bran
2 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. cinnamon
1 egg lightly beaten
¼ cup honey
3 Tbl. Vegetable oil
¾ cup milk
Optional ingredients:Apples/banana’s blended together shredded
Zucchini and carrots/nuts shredded
Cheddar/jack cheese cooked chicken
Ingredients:About 500g liver (beef or chicken)
3 - 4 tsp of crushed or minced or fresh garlic
Directions:•Preheatovento200degrees
•Linemuffintinswithfoil/papermuffinforms.
•Mixdryingredients.
•Inaseparatebowl,mixtheegg,honeyandoil.
•Mixthemilkinwiththedryingredients,blendingwell. At this point mix your “optional” ingredients into the honey mixture,then mix the honey mixture into the flour/milk batter.
•Putinmuffintinsandbakefor15-20minutes.
These muffins freeze well.

Every 2 years the National agility event is held in a different state of Australia. This year NSW
was the host state and the event was held at the Sydney equestrian centre. With over 700 competitors (from all over Australia and New Zealand) and more than 6000 runs this event was huge, in fact the largest agility nationals yet. All breeds of dogs are able to enter. Each event was run in separate height categories, which means if your dog measures 300mm it only has to compete against other dogs of the same height.
Judges from every state and New Zealand were invited to set courses and judge this event.
Dogs could be entered in Agility- an event which has a dog walk, A frame and weaves , Jumping-a course which has jumps and tunnels and agility games gamblers and snooker also strategic pairs ( 2 dogs working together to complete the course.
Dogs compete at their level attained so far, Novice the entry level- after 3 passes at this level you can enter Excellent- after 5 passes at this level you can enter Masters. ). Two other events available to enter were open jumping and agility. In this class dogs at all levels can compete against each other, hence Open.
Being such a big event dog heights were run on different days. 5 rings were allocated- 3 outdoor and 2 indoors allowing competitors to compete in all rings over the 5 days.
At the conclusion of the event dogs which had
placed in their heats competed in the finals. Each state and New Zealand also had selected teams to compete in the final event of the Nationals the Teams event.
Nicola Read and I were privileged to enter the Nationals agility. Nicola has 3 Labradoodles, Coogee 13, Puzzle 7 and Crumpet who is a young puppy in training. Both Coogee and Puzzle competed on Friday in Agility Masters and Jumping Masters and they had clear runs (clear runs means no mistakes and within the course times set by the judge). On the Sat Puzzle ran clear in both events and Coogee ran clear in agility.
Eisha my Boxer ran on Wednesday in gamblers, Agility Novice and Jumping Excellent. Eisha ran clear in gamblers and made 1 mistake in her other events. We competed again on the Friday

Goodbye to BebsonIt’s a sad goodbye for us all but mainly Leanne and David who had to say goodbye to their Beautiful Boxer Boy Benson! Everyone who met Benson fell in love with him me included and fortunately I had a few cuddles with him the day before he was put to sleep, Benson was like an older Gentleman with manners to suit and did not have a bad bone in his body and so gentle with everybody he will be sadly missed by all, Leanne fed him a bar of chocolate that he loved so much (but was not allowed to eat) that the vet found for her! he munched through that then went for his long sleep in his mums arms! RIP Benson Gorgeous Boy.
