upstairs. The food is beautiful and it will be a sit down 3 course meal @ $30 a head. Please pay Wally or myself at the sign in table in November or before if you want to. We also need to know the number of people coming. Usually we have around 40 members and have a great night with 10 raffles and one lucky door prize. Partners are also welcome.

Thanks Ella

As all our members who were at Training on the 20th October would know we held

anHalloweennightforDogtobertoraisefunds for the Assistance Dogs Australia Ltd.

It was great to see everyone dressing up their dogs as well as themselves and playing the games. Everyone had a ball as you can see bythephoto’sRon’swifeJenettetookonthenight. They are beautiful thanks Jenette!

AlsoaBigthankyoutoRon,Lynn&Leannewho did a great job organising it all.

We raised $120 on the night and the club matched that dollar for dollar so a cheque has been sent to Assitance Dogs Australia Ltd for $240.00 from S.D.D.T.C.INC to train more of these little guy’s thanks everyone who contributed on the night!

Assistance Dogs Contacted me via email a few days later to tell everyone involved, that the amount of money raised is enough to pay for 2 service dog coats so that when they are placed, the dogs can be identified and go anywhere with their recipients… makes it all worthwhile guys!

To be a Dog!Heaven goes by favour. If it went by merit, you would stay out and your dog would go in.

A dog has lots of friends because he wags his tail and not his tongue. My little dog – a heartbeat at my feet.

Yesterday I was a dog. Today I’m a dog. Tomorrow I’ll probably still be a dog. Sigh! There’s so little hope of advancement.

What kind of life a dog acquires, I have sometimes tried to imagine by kneeling or lying full length on the ground and looking up. The world then becomes strangely incomplete: one sees little but legs.

Did you ever notice when you blow in a dogs’ face he gets mad at you? But when you take him in a car he sticks his head out the window.

If you can’t decide between a Shepherd, a Setter, or a poodle, get them all… adopt a mutt!

A herdingdoginnorthernRussia, thebreedacquiredthe name after the nomadic tribe it served. They

were also used to guard the reindeer that they herded. The dog worked closely with the tribe and shared their tents, so has a great love of family life. On occasion they were used to pull sleds or boats, but this work was usually reserved for the reindeer.

Many explorers used these dogs at the turn of the century when there was an increase in polar exploration. After the expeditions many of these dogs returned home with the explorers.

MrandMrsKilburn-ScottfirstintroducedthebreedintotheUKatthebeginningofthiscentury after they saw them in their native country in 1889. They became popular very quickly and are still so to this day.

The dog is a medium sized Spitz breed, showing the typical characteristics of erect, pricked ears and a tail curling over its back. They are white in colour with a weather resistant coat. Their feet are flat and have an abundance of hair between the toes and on the pads making them like snowshoes. Their unique feet prevent snow from forming ‘snowballs’ between the toes and hampering their working ability in their native lands. The breed can be pure white, white and biscuit or cream in colour. Ideally dogs should measure between 51-56cms at the withers; bitches should measure between 46-51cms. Theweightrangesbetween23-30kgs,itshouldbeinproportionwiththeoverallsize.

In general the dog is friendly, outgoing and devoted. They are protective of their homes; no intruder will ever go unheard. They get on well with children, make good familypetsandliketobeincludedinallfamilyactivities.Howeveriftheyarelefttotheirown devices they can be destructive and are known to enjoy digging. As they are great escape artists, a high fence around the garden is a good investment. This can be a difficult dog to train, as they are known to be quite willful, so patience is a must. They can be independent and will only do something because they enjoy being with their owner and at times they will happily go off and do their own thing. They are vocal and so must be trained to curtail this on command. As puppies these dogs should be properly socialised, especially with cats and other household pets.

After a few years in the club I began instructing which I have enjoyed immensely, I enjoy working with club members and seeing the progress of the dogs and their owners as they complete the beginner’s course. I will be curious to see how the dogs adapt to the new addition to our

family, my daughter Cassandra was born on the 12th of September at 6 pounds, nearly six weeks early, and after a short hospital stay has come home. The dogs are quite interested in her sitting either side of my rocking chair when I am feeding Cassie during the day and the night and Angel is the first one up to her if she cries! So far Cassie seems to have passed the sniff test.

My story with dogs began about nine years ago when I inherited two little mixed

breed dogs, Angel and Jag. They were both about five years old when they came to live with me. I am not sure what it was about them that enamoured me of them, their own little quirks perhaps, Angel so hardy in body but so delicate in temperament and Jag the opposite. I had never experienced such devotion, as I received from the two of them, once when I had the flu Jag slept on my bed with me for five days he never left me, he was so sweet. The both liked to challenge me too however being dedicated escape artists, every time I found a way to keep them in or block off a new hole they would find another way out. Ultimately there was a concrete border around the fence line of the house we lived in at the time as that seemed to be the only way to keep them in. Unfortunately even that was not entirely successful and I lost Jag to a lack of traffic sense on one of their many expeditions, which was devastating. Angel had never been without a mate so she found the loss of Jag very difficult. My family researched what sort of dog would be a good mate for such a neurotic little creature as Angel and so Gaj came to live with

us, he was three months old and came from Leisure view. Gaj had a bit of a bumpy start with two hernia operations and a paralysis tick before he was a year old but since has grown up into a strong little boy. I was determined to do everything I could not to lose another dog which is what led me to SDDTC about seven

years ago. When I joined the club like so many other beginners I never thought I would be able to get my dogs to do any of the things that were demonstrated to us.

Angel, being about 8 years old when I joined the club, did not take well to training, although happy to learn at home she spent all her time at the club at the table being nursed by whoever was willing to hold her as she was so nervous and

frightened. Angel is definitely the boss at home however and has run of the

house to show for it! Gaj loves training and ultimately made it to the top class. I am sure he knows which day of the week Thursday is as he is always more excited than usual when I get home on a Thursday! When I joined the club it was at the time when the classes were run in colours. Gaj and I progressed to Orange class fairly quickly but we spent 8 long months in Orange class because the stand completely eluded us. Eventually though we got it, and
