A Note About Outreach Activities Rebecca Ellert, Elderly Outreach Caseworker

Hello Everyone

I want to bring to your attention a few more things regarding what I wrote about last month. I’d like to start with an overview of Senior Living Options. As I said last month, there are multiple places and multiple levels of care available. Let’s begin with Senior Care at Home: Home Care: pretty self-explanatory – this includes professional support services that allow a person to live safely in their home. It provides companionship, help with daily activities, i.e., bathing, dressing and household chores. Home Health Care: This is typically physician-directed care intended to help patients prevent or recover from injuries, illnesses. Also provides assistance with activities of daily living. Personal Care & Companionship: Provides assistance with activities of daily living (ADLs). Companion care provides companionship and non-medical services such as meal prep and light household chores. Private Duty Nursing Care: Provides long-term hourly nursing care for those with chronic illnesses, injuries or disabilities. Adult Day Care: This option offers you or your loved one a safe, stimulating social environment in a professional care setting during normal business hours, five days a week.. You can typically expect meals, snacks, health monitoring medication assistance, and fitness, as well as enrichment programs and social activities. We have a wonderful Adult Day Care right here in Tolland. Care in Senior Living: Rehab Centers – these are in-patient facilities that provide therapy and treatment designed to restore functioning and reduce pain after an injury or serious medical event. PT, OT, and ST are typically included in these service. Respite Care: Provides temporary institutional care for seniors who are dependent, elder ly, ill or handicapped. Respite care is typically used for short period of time to provide care and rest for both the senior and the caregiver(s). Independent Living: Housing arrangements designed exclusively for older adults. This is when your basic essential function of survival is not threatened. It could be that you are pretty independent, but need help with ADL, such as managing a budget, paying bills, meal prep, arranging medical appointments, etc.

A Note About Outreach Activities Rebecca Ellert, Elderly Outreach Caseworker

Continued from page 2

These places are great for someone seeking more social and enrichment opportunities than they have at home, as well as freedom from the hassle of chores and household maintenance. You can expect a choice of accommodations, worry-free living with housekeeping, laundry, home maintenance taken care of, social opportunities, and activities. Assisted Living: Designed for seniors who need assistance with ADLs such as eating, bathing, dressing and also provides onsite care and support while encouraging the independence of the resident. You can expect individualized support with ADL, managing medication as well as onsite medical care. A comfortable home setting without the worry of home upkeep. A secure environment, scheduled transportation. Amenities such as fitness centers, libraries, and onsite salons. Daily social opportunities with a range of programs, activities and outings. Specialized care services for those with chronic health issues. I know it’s a lot to take in, but read this over and think about it. I know some of you are on the fence about a move and have numerous questions. These decisions are made when you’re better informed as to what you’re actually looking for, and how to go about it. Next month, I’ll discuss Staying At Home vs. Moving into a Senior Community, the total cost of staying home and quality of life considerations. Stay tuned, and start the conversations with your loved ones. Better to be proactive than reactive. See You in September. Becky

MEMBERSHIP TRIVIA

Every month we’ll ask a question about our membership along with a tie breaker question and the Senior who comes closest to the answer will win a $10.00 gift card to a Tolland Business.

We had NO winner for our August trivia question (the most common man’s name in our membership). We have 7 members with the name Don/Donald.

This month the gift card will be to Tolland Red & White.

The question is: What is the most common last name in our membership?

The tie breaker question is: How many people have that last name in our membership?

Submit your answers to Kim, the Senior Center Director, by September 23, 2021, either by phone (860-870-3730), email ([email protected]) or in person.
