Issue No. 24 September 2012

From a Wise Prophet!A young woman stepped forward from the throng and asked "O great prophet, tell us how we might find love that is unconditional, unwavering and unending."

The prophet did not answer right away. He looked off into the distance, gathering his thoughts. Silence descended upon the crowd. Then he turned his gaze upon the young woman and said, "Get a dog."

Dogs Hate to be Crated: Dogs are den animals by nature and when properly trained most dogs love to be crated. The crate is their peaceful sanctuary and is useful when the family are away.

Dogs look guilty when they have done something wrong: Dogs react to human body language and emotions. Dogs can read human emotions and body language accurately, and know when you are upset or angry. They try to appease your feelings by crawling on the floor, crouching, rolling over on their backs or avoiding eye contact.

If you give chew toys it will learn to chew everything: Dogs learn how to distinguish their toys from forbidden items with minimal training. Chewing is an outlet for lonely or bored dogs. Chew toys give the dogs something to do thereby preventing misbehaviour.

great day for both the dogs and their handler; its fast and at times very funny with lots going on. A dog has to run and jump over obstacles, go through tunnels and other things, under a set time. The time and course which has been set out by the judge of that ring on the day itself. The handler has a chance to walk the course for a short time before then try and remember it all while directing their pooch at the same time.

Nicola & Coogee’s Storyby Lynn Olsen

MEMBERS’ GUESSING COMPETITION No. 24

This breed is no doubt one of the oldest types of land spaniel. Their origins can be traced back to 14th

centurySpain.Priortothe1600’salltypesofspanielswerecategorised together; the larger ones being used to spring game and the smaller ones to flush out woodcock. Hence the names Springer and Cocker were derived. In 1892 the KennelClubofGreatBritaindifferentiatedthetwobreedsseparately. In the 1930’s the breed was the most popular breedofdoginBritainandtherehestayedforalmost20years.OntheothersideoftheAtlantic, Americans were using the same breeding stock to develop a slightly different breed.In1940,theKennelClubthensplittheseSpanielsintoAmericanandEnglish.

Active dogs with much substance and bone, these dogs are well-balanced, compact little dogs. Their coats are flat and silky with plenty of feathering on the front legs. They cover the ground well, their great drive coming from their muscular back legs. This breed comes in a multitude of different colours including; solid colours of black, red, orange and brown, combinations of black with white, liver with white, red and white, blue roan, orange roans, black roans, particolours and tricolours.

These are busy, friendly little dogs who thrive on human companionship, wanting nothing more than to please their owners. They are ideal pets where there are children about andgetonwellwithotherhouseholdanimals.Theycanbeverymanipulative–whocan resist their soft, pleading eyes? The sad eyes, however are a misconception, they are a very happy breed, constantly wagging their tails and bringing ‘presents’ to one and all.

These dogs adapt effortlessly to the family situation but do remember they are gundogs and as such, should be given a reasonable amount of exercise. They love to swim so take care when water is in the vicinity to ensure their safety. Allow them time off the lead to play and run off their energies.

Their coats must be brushed regularly. The excess hair around the ear passages and beneath the ears must be removed to ensure the ears are adequately ventilated and that no infections set in. The hair around their feet and that between their pads also needs regular attention. They should be stripped out 3 or 4 times a year by a professional groomer. It is possible, however, to learn how to do this yourself.

Deaf Dogs Can Read Sign Language Dog Behaviour Inventory

Sponsored by Vicki Finn ,Misty & Pepper

Dog Quote of the MonthWhen man is in trouble God sends him a dog.

Alphonse de Lamartine(1790-1869)

When my beloved cattle dog Ben died of cancer, I thought I’d never be able to replace him. We had spent thousands of dollars trying to keep him alive, but he’d

finally lost the fight in February 2009. But when I heard about a local cattle dog breeder who was looking for a home for a disabled pup, I knew I had to open my heart again.

They told me the puppy was deaf. Just like Ben.’I trained Ben with sign language and I’m sure I can do the same with this little fellow,’ I told my husband Harold, 73, one day. ‘He’ll be great company for Anzac.’Anzac is our other cattle dog. When he’d come tomein2001,hehadbeenarealtearaway.Everyonehadgivenuponhimbecauseof his unruly behaviour. I wasn’t really surprised when I discovered that nobody had even house trained him? As Anzac had already known a deaf dog, I knew he’d be the perfect big brother.

So I went to collect the new little pooch. I called the pup Chance, as in second chance. It wasn’t so far from the truth. If I hadn’t taken him it’s unlikely Chance would have had a future at all. He was only with me for a couple of hours when I dropped a book on the floor and he came running. He must have felt the vibration and thought I was calling him! ‘Well, I can see you’ve got a lot of potential,’ I grinned at the attentive little fellow at my feet, the most important thing about Chance is that he shows deaf dogs can be trained and lead a life as normal as any other animal.

There’s a terrible terrible tendency to put down disabled dogs? But Chance clearly demonstrateshowrediculousthatis.Ofcourseadeafdogisn’tforeveryone.Butwithalittle extra attention they’re great companions. Chance doesn’t even realise he’s deaf. It’s all he has ever known. Despite earning himself a few nicknames - Last Chance when he raided the kitchen cupboard and downed a bottle of cooking oil and Final Chance when I found him sitting in a nice bubble bath I’d just run for myself - he’s the love of our lives. And Anzac thinks his new friend is pretty special too!

(Taken from that’s life)

This set of questions has to do with your dog’s learning, obedience and problem solving.

1. Does your dog obey simple commands like ‘sit’ and ‘down’ immediately?

NEVER SELDOM OCCASIONALLY FREQUENTLY ALWAYS

2. When your dog is off leash and running free, does it return immediately when you call?

NEVER SELDOM OCCASIONALLY FREQUENTLY ALWAYS

3. Does your dog retrieve or try to retrieve sticks, balls, or other objects if your throw them for him or her?

NEVER SELDOM OCCASIONALLY FREQUENTLY ALWAYS

4. Does your dog seem to pay attention or listen closely to everything you say or do?

NEVER SELDOM OCCASIONALLY FREQUENTLY ALWAYS

5. Does your dog figure things out for itself (e.g. He or she may be good at escaping from places, learning how to open closets or doors, quick at understanding words like ‘walk’ or ‘bath’ that you haven’t deliberately tried to teach him).

NEVER SELDOM OCCASIONALLY FREQUENTLY ALWAYS

6. Is your dog easily distracted by interesting sights, sounds or smells?

NEVER SELDOM OCCASIONALLY FREQUENTLY ALWAYS

7. Is your dog slow to learn new tricks or tasks?

NEVER SELDOM OCCASIONALLY FREQUENTLY ALWAYS

8. Does your dog give up quickly when it can’t solve a problem?

NEVER SELDOM OCCASIONALLY FREQUENTLY ALWAYS

9. Does your dog repeat the same mistakes over and over when having difficulty solving a problem or learning something new?

NEVER SELDOM OCCASIONALLY FREQUENTLY ALWAYS

10. Is it the case that your dog knows what to do but can be stubborn and refuse to obey commands?

NEVER SELDOM OCCASIONALLY FREQUENTLY ALWAYS

After you have answered all of these items for your dog, you next have to determine your dog’s scores. The general scoring system is that NEVER = 1, SELDOM = 2, OCCASIONALLY = 3, FREQUENTLY = 4, ALWAYS = 5. However for questions 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 the scoring is reversed.

The average score for this trait is 30. A dog with scores below 23 is very low, between 23 and 30 Is moderately low; from 30 to 37 is moderately high; and above 37 is very high for this trait.

The Tanya and Harry Story The Craig and Yelsin Story

Sponsored by Hon David Brown (Patron)Sponsored by Hon David Brown (Patron)

Like most relationships it began with a handshake but the friendship that

has blossomed between Craig and his new service dog is priceless.

Yelsin was welcomed into the Dodge family at Christmas last year and this handsome and quirky black Labrador is ready to change the life of Craig and his family, lending them a helping paw and making it easier for Craig to get out and about.

We have gone to the shopping centre and the cinema and he was very well behaved.

We went to the late show at the cinema and it was really successful and exciting for everyone.

Yelsin will help Craig with every day tasks that people with physical disabilities find difficult or impossible to achieve, tasks like opening and closing doors, picking up all manner of dropped items, collecting the mail or paying the cashier at the shops. Yelsin is also been trained to bark if Craig is in trouble or falls out of his wheelchair.

I had a fall in the library bathroom and he was very helpful making sure i had the phone and giving me his attention. Craig said he was very worried and stayed with me the whole time.

If you would like to help a pup become an assistance dog like Yelsin contact assistance dogs.

Twelve years ago, at the age of 19, Tanya Clarke was involved in

a road accident, which left her a quadriplegic, who uses a wheelchair, with limited arm movement and no hand function.

Tanya has her own wheelchair accessible unit in the backyard of her parent’s home, with an intercom for communication. Then a new helper arrived in January 2001 in the form of Harry, Tanya’s Assistance Dog.

As Tanya says, “Harry came into my life and made a huge difference to my level of independence. For the first time since my accident, my quality of life has improved a great deal.” Harry helps Tanya around the home.

Owingtoherdisability, she is always dropping things such as her hairbrush, mobile phone, remote controls. Harry often only has to hear something drop and he comes to the rescue, retrieving the item and returning it to Tanya. So Tanya’s mother is saved a lot of time and effort. Her family knows that if they hear Harry bark, she needs their help. “And for the first time I could get out of my own front door, because Harry could

open it for me! I can now come and go independently without parental assistance, which makes such a difference.”

The other interesting thing that Tanya has noticed is that before she got Harry she tended to be invisible to the people around her - they bumped into her or even walked over the top of her.

Now when she is out with Harry, people notice both of them and they offer to help. She meets a lot more people as they stop to talk. She is no

longer invisible.

Tanya is employed in the field of website design and development, having completed two Diplomas after her accident. In the evenings, Harry and Tanya go to the movies, concerts, nightclubs and the theatre. With Harry she is approached more

and people are more comfortable in making eye contact with her. And that means a lot to Tanya.

As Tanya says, “Harry has improved my independence, my quality of life and the way I feel about myself. He is also my companion and the very best friend anyone could ever wish for.

It is possible, however, to learn how to do this yourself.

great day for both the dogs and their handler; its fast and at times very funny with lots going on. A dog has to run and jump over obstacles, go through tunnels and other things, under a set time. The time and course which has been set out by the judge of that ring on the day itself. The handler has a chance to walk the course for a short time before then try and remember it all while directing their pooch at the same time.
