Municipality attended a career expo sponsored byDwarsrivier Mine.

Dwarsrivier Mine believes that investing in theyouth is investing in the future of the country andthe company. The day was held at the Civic Centrein Mashishing (Lydenburg) and a host of highereducation organisations were represented. Thisday’s event was the second Dwarsrivier hosted intwo weeks. The week before, a similar event tookplace in the Greater Tubatse Municipality,highlighting Dwarsrivier Mine’s commitment toinvest in the area through creating opportunitiesfor the youth to grow into employable adults.The learners listened to the various speakers whoexplained what type of careers is available, whatthe requirements with regards to subjects andacademic achievements are needed, as well asbursary opportunities they can tap into.Mr Remember Mmbengwa, SD Manager ofDwarsrivier Mine gave a motivational talk. He toldthe learners that sport and modelling might soundlike wonderful careers, but the reality is that theynever last. He encouraged them to pursue thoseoptions as hobbies while studying towards adegree or diploma that will ensure a long-termcareer. He added that being from a poor or

disadvantaged background is not an excuse. Withhard work people can rise above theircircumstances. Learners must make use of thevarious bursary and internship opportunities thatare available to them.He emphasised that being intelligent is not theonly requirement for getting somewhere in life.Working hard and never letting an opportunityto gain knowledge pass you by is the key tosuccess. He told them that there is no space forlaziness and there is no such thing as a ‘free ride’to being successful in your chosen career.The learners had the opportunity to visit thevarious exhibition stalls and obtain moreinformation about the various industries.Stakeholders represented at the day includedDwarsrivier Mine, Thaba Chweu Municipality,The Mpumalanga Regional Training Trust’Hospitality and Tourism Academy, CTI NelspruitCampus, TUT and NYDA.The learners’ experience was rounded off with afood parcel to ensure that they leave theexhibition only hungry for knowledge andsuccess in the future.

FATALITY AT MODIKWAPLATINUM MINE

ARM made the following SENS announcement this week following an accident atModikwa Mine:

African Rainbow Minerals Limited (ARM) and Anglo American Platinum Limited regret toannounce that an employee was fatally injured in an underground accident at their jointlyowned Modikwa Platinum Mine on 03 June 2014.Both ARM and Anglo American Platinum extend their sincerest condolences to the family,friends and colleagues of the deceased.

The exact circumstances around the incident was not known at the time of going to

press.

Sekhukhune District MunicipalityExecutive Mayor, Mogobo DavidMagabe delivered the State of theDistrict Address at the Moses MabothaCicic Hall in Fetakgomo LocalMunicipality on 30 May, in combinationwith the 2014 IDP / Budget that wasapproved.

Councillor Magabe dwelled atlength on the humble beginnings of theDistrict Municipality under a tree nearGroblersdal a number of years ago,with a budget of only a few million rand,to where it was today with a budget ofmore than R1000 million and massiveprojects with regard to waterinfrastructure and sanitation projects,such as 36 000 VIP toilets.

Councillor Magabe told hisaudience that the District Municipalityhas grown to an effective governmentcommitted to service delivery in its areaof jurisdiction and that it is committed tolisten to the more than one millionresidents of the district’s fivemunicipalities. This populationrepresents 740 villages and 263802households.

He stressed that the DistrictMunicipality was not running alone onits own course, but that it wascommitted to hand work in glove withresidents, local municipalities, theprivate sector and specifically themines that play a major role in thisarea. In this regard he declared:

“We wish to report that ourrelationship with the mines is yieldingpositive results as we speak. We havestarted this engagement through

bilateral talks until the formation ofthe Executive Mayor and MiningGeneral Managers Forum.

To date, we are proud to saythe District Municipality togetherwith the local mines haveimplemented community projectsranging from water, communityhalls, clinics, sports grounds,municipal roads, etc. We thank allthe mines for their contributionsindeed.

However, please allow me tosingle out Xstrata Mine as the majorcontributor towards this cause andwe urge other mines to emulate theexample by Xstrata.

We reiterate our call to themining companies and the privatesector to work closely with theSekhukhune Development Agency,(SDA) because it was establishedto improve relations with the miningsector.

As we together move SouthAfrica forward we report that, wehave laid a model of goodgovernance with the separation ofpowers to intensify oversight. Thismodel of separation of powersdistinctively defines roles of theexecutive arm of government andthe legislature.

The District Municipality is nowmore visible on the groundinteracting with communitiesthrough outreaches, tabledbudgets, draft IDP, draft AnnualReports and other legislated andnon-legislated engagements”.

Glencore’s Thorncliffe Mine recently hosteda group of United Kingdom based university

students as part of their programme tounderstand hard rock mining in South Africa.

The group of 23 students from ImperialCollege London, led by Professor Dennis

Buchanan,undertook anunderground minevisit at the operation,a first for some ofthe students whowere part of thedelegation.“Each year I arrangean excursion in Mayto South Africa forthe group MScMetals and EnergyFinance students,”says Prof Buchanan.“In the past this hasincluded a visit toGlencore’s LionFerrochromiumoperations in theitinerary. Given thatthey are busy with

the construction of Phase 2 of theiroperation we decided to visit the ThorncliffeMine. This neatly complemented thenarrative of an integrated chromite operationwith Thorncliffe providing chromitite directlyto Lion for ferrochromium production,” hesays. Prof Buchanan says the visit providedan opportunity for the students to enhancetheir employability in the minerals, coal andpetroleum industries and the related financedivisions of investment banks of recent

graduates with general science, engineeringand finance degrees.“The programme also providescomplementary training for professionalswith previous industrial experience and is acombined Faculty of Engineering andBusiness School degree at Imperial CollegeLondon,” he says.According to Johan Combrink, GlencoreAlloys’ General Manager, Eastern ChromeMines, the visit strengthened the ties thatthe company has with the University whichhas conducted similar visits in the past tothe Lion Project.“The visit provided an opportunity to exposethe students to Hard Rock mining. It was thefirst time that some of the students visited anunderground operation. We hope that thevisit will go a long way in assisting them gaina better understanding of how we conductmining and also prepare them in their futurecareers,” he says.“We all came away with an in-depthappreciation of the level of technicalsophistication that lies behind a successfulmechanised underground chromitite miningoperation. It would seem to me that theThorncliffe operation is at the cutting edge ofthe strategically vital transition in the SouthAfrican mining industry from labour intensiveto mechanization extraction of narrow planarore bodies. The commitment demonstratedby your underground operators to makingthe process successful was quite uplifting. Itwas a real privilege for all of us to see themin action,” adds Prof Buchanan.

A while back we took the Opel Corsa Essentia with its normally aspirated 1400 engine for aspin.

We reported positively about the car, but lamented that the engine was really nothing towrite home about. This week, we entered the Opel Corsa Enjoy 1.4T (for turbo) and crossedthe path from Steelpoort to Mangabane village (so to speak).

So what is different? Apart from the turbo, the car gains 16 inch alloy wheels comparedto the lesser brother’s 15 inch wheels, ABS front and rear with disk brakes at the rear asopposed the drums of the Essentia, start/stop economy control and upgraded trim like bodycoloured door handles and a matt chrome air nozzle.

Better?O yes! The long incline from Steelpoort to Mangabane proved to be no problem for the

little Ecotec turbo and there was no sign of running out of breath like the time we drove theEssentia. Acceleration was strong and torque kicked in low thanks to the turbo, which apartfrom the better and useful pulling power, did its work silently and smooth. The ride was verycomfortable and the car was surefooted, stopping on a penny.

The steering at speed felt very light and personally the driver would have liked a littlemore weight.

Space and comfort in the cabin did not really differ from the cheaper brother of the car,but fatigue levels (with a more comfortable and safer) turbo drive will definitely be less.

The stop/start thing works well with the car ‘dying’ when you stop, put your foot on thebrake and clutch and put the 5-speed shifter into neutral. It fires up immediately when youlift your foot off the clutch after engaging a gear.

O, the needle of the rev counter also rests on an auto stop indicator while the car is‘dead’. A light should have been better.

Another gripe is that the folding rear seat is still not split in this derivative, making for anawkward squat on the back seat when disengaging the catches to release the seatback.

Overall the car is enjoyable to drive and a young couple or single person do not reallyneed anything else in this price range. R201300 as opposed to the R187800 of the normallyaspirated Essentia. Worth it? You decide. Our vote is positive.

Enjoying the turbo

It was with great enthusiasm and expertise that the following learners, MugivhiMulanga, Kgasago Moleboge and Phasha Rorisang, proved that success needsdevotion. Calvin Junior Debate Team attained number one position in theSekhukhune District’s debate competitions that was proudly sponsored by Love Life.The final competition took place on the 23 May at Jane Furse. It was truly a clash ofthe giants, but the Calvinites managed to stand proud amongst the eight schools thattook part. Calvin College teacher, Mrs. M. Bengura is also the Debate coordinator,and she says that she has grand expectations for these learners, and the journey theyhave started. This group was also to be taking part in the Provincial DebateCompetition on 5 June in Polokwane. In the photograph are Mrs. M. Bengura(Educator), Kgasago Maleboge, Phasha Rorisang, and Mughivi Mulanga.

Mr Rharjhie Kwashirai and Ms GrannyNkuna said: “It is good. It will improveBurgersfort. The construction will createjobs. But, it will be a bit impossible to movethe hawkers so the municipality sits with aproblem there”.

Mr Big Masemola said: “No, it won’t work. Itis a waste of money. They won’t move there,it is too far from the centre of town”.

Mnr. Christo Myburg en Mnr. Daniël Mkamasê: “Dis ‘n safety en environmental hazardwat hulle daar bou. Dit gaan nie beter weesnie. Mense gaan oor die pad hardloop endaar gaan ongelukke wees. Dink net hoevuil sal dit wees. Wat gaan hulle met goedsoos riool doen? Die sisteem is reedsoorlaai. Ons werk by Modikwa en daar washierdie week ‘n fatality en dit terwyl ons altydsafety eerste sit. Daarom weet ons hierdie isprobleem wat hulle besig is om te skep.Daai plek sal ook nog fatalities veroorsaak”.

Mr Doctor Masinga said: “The hawkers mustmove there. It will be clean and safe if theyhave that place. Their products will becleaner and they will sell more things.Burgersfort will become a clean town. Thistown is very dirty now”.

Mr Godfrey Mkhombo said: “It is a goodthing. They will have a nice place to work.The hawkers will be willing to move there ifthey think properly about it. Town will becleaner. There they will have a bin to puttheir rubbish. The guys cutting hair will beable to go and put it in the bin unlike now.Who knows? Maybe Burgersfort canbecome the cleanest town in South Africa!”

Mr Maurice Ngele and Mr Thabo Selahlesaid: “It is too close to the road that spot. Itwill not be safe there. There will be lots ofaccidents with many people moving aroundthere and over that big and busy street. Itwill also be much dirtier there. The hawkerswill not want to move from their currentlocations”.

Mr. John Masuku said: “It’s good. We aregrowing into a city. In Pretoria in Sunnysidethere is something similar to what they arebuilding here. If you go there you know youcan get anything. I hope it will work”.

Mnr Sam Mphogo sê: “Dis reg dat hulle ditbou. Die mense sal daar wil gaan om goedte verkoop. Dit sal beter wees vir die dorp”.By hom is Loyso.

Mr Mataba said: “It is a good idea. They willno longer be called hawkers; they will haveproper little shops. The municipality is doingwell”.

Burgersfort’s economy does not only exitsof mines and other formal businesses. Theinformal traders or hawkers represent alarge number of the economically activepeople in the area.Over the past two years the hawkers wereencouraged to join the Hawkers Associationrecognised by the Greater TubatseMunicipality. They pay an annual fee andone of the things they had on their wish listis currently in the process of becoming areality. Construction of the Burgersfort fleamarket has started with the ground workscurrently in progress. The market will beconstructed across Magaba Filling Stationon an open piece of land behind CheapCheap Butchery.We asked readers what they think about themarket and how it will impact onBurgersfort.

On Sunday 1 June Marota Cosmos FCplayed a friendly soccer game against ZoZoAjax FC at Marota Cosmos Stadium in Ga-Matodi.The hosts dominated the first half of thegame and were leading 2-1 by half time. Inthe second half ZoZo Ajax FC came back toequalise the score. The hosts continued their

domination but late in the game, the visitorsfought back and managed to score anothergoal. Not going down without a fight, thehosts saw the back of the net three moretimes. Melvin Seroka (Rooney) created manyscoring opportunities for Marota Cosmos FC.The goal scorers for Marota Cosmos FCwere Moraba Khutso (Sethole) and Cosmos

FC number one striker Abre(Bododo) Seroka who scoredthree goals. Thabo Maphoke(Joka) and Abel (KG) scored forZoZo Ajax FC. The final scorewas 5-3.Marota Cosmos FC this weekalso welcomed Papaeki(Sekororo) to the team as head

Local Elite runnersLeboka Noto and Peter Molapo are bothElite runners. This means that they areplaced at the front of the pack when therace starts based on their previousperformances.Both Peter and Leboka are ModikwaPlatinum Mine employees. Leboka wasone of the few runners in the top 20 whodid not get a few months off for dedicatedtraining before the Comrades. He workedhis shifts underground and trained before

and after work. He told Platinum Gazettethat he wish he was able to do the 300kmpractice he missed between January andMay due to various circumstances. He doesapproximately 3 100km of running over thisperiod in preparation for the race. “Perhapsthen I could have done better,” he said.Leboka is very humble, but also very toughon himself. He was the second veteran tofinish and 19th overall. Many of the otherrunners also paced themselves againstLeboka’s steady run.Peter Molapo finished in a time of 6:43:26.

The Comrades Marathon is a tough race and 800 runnersreceived medical treatments at the finish. Of these, 362were attended to at the medical tent while 400 runnersreceived R&R, rubdowns, strapping, massage and mildtreatment at the St. Johns Tent.60 patients were treated at Durban’s St. Augustine’sHospital while 14 patients were referred to the Umhlanga

The ComradesMarathon is oftenused as a way toraise money forworthy causes.Runners then usefun outfits to drawattention. On page11 there is aphotograph ofsomeone who ranin a rhino costumeto raise money andawareness forthese animals’ safekeeping.Runners oftenenter the stadiumat the finish withbanners brandedwith messages toloved ones ordedications of theirrace.

Local runnersperformed very well.Many of them haveparticpated in morethan one Comrades. Arunner receives a greennumber after runningmore than 10 races.

Samancor athletes Gift Kelehe and LatudiMakofane spoke to Platinum Gazette this week.Latudi is also known as Surprise. This 30-year oldrunner works at Tubatse as a Front-End Loaderoperator. He is from Ga-Riba Village and veryhappy about his 10th place. He said: “I want tothank Samancor, thank you to my coach and thankyou to Andries Nieuwoudt from Tubatse. The 2months’ training at Dullstroom helped a lot. With6km to go I was so tired, but I am so happy withthe way I ran. Next year I am going for a top 3position!” His message to the youth - patience andpractice is key. Some people have the potentialbut they don’t have the sponsors and mentors butthey should keep on reaching for their dreams.Gift Kelehe joined the Samancor ChromeMarathon Club after Fanie Matshipa introducedhim there. During the year he is a constable inthe Rustenburg SAPS. He said: “Thank you toSamancor, coach John Hamlet and the SAPS”.He will be aiming for 1st place next year.

A top positionfor local club

On Sunday last week the Comrades UltraMarathon of 89,28km delivered three SouthAfricans in the top three positions.Bongmusa Mthembu won the race whichstretched from Pietermaritzburg to Durban ina time of 5:28:34. In second place wasLudwick Mamabolo, one of Limpopo’s proudproducts. The third place was taken by localmarathon club, Samancor Chrome’s GiftKelehe. Kelehe finished in a time of 5:34:39.To Samancor Chrome’s delight they alsoclaimed position 10 in the top ranks whenLatudi (Surprise) Makofane finished in5:40:41.The winners also walk away with handsomeprize money. The winner received R350 000.Second place took R175 000 and third gotR130 000.Leboka Noto, a Modikwa Platinum Mineemployee made the mine proud when hecame in as the second veteran and inposition 19 overall.The women’s race was won by EleanorGreenwood from Great Britain. 18 000athletes entered the race and 14 620 runnersparticipated on the day. Of those only 11 984managed to finish. The runners had 12 hoursto finish the race that started at 05:30 in themorning. The heat during the day made fortough conditions and many athletescomplained that the last few kilometres werethe toughest. More than 50% of theComrades finishers come over the finishlinein the last hour of the race. This makes thewinners’ achievements even moresignificant.Platinum Gazette had Willem Montgomeryaccredited as a correspondent and hebrought home all the news and photographsof this race of ultimate human endurance.Read more about local athletes’ results andwhat the day delivered on pages 10 and 11.
