LettersDear Editor,Last Thursday, we were preparing to finally power up our 10 acre property and left the main pole at our front gate for Essential En-ergy. We discovered that all parts for the pole had been stolen. Parts can be replaced, but it meant we would have to wait another 3 weeks without power. The part that upsets me the most is that my 92 year old Mum has recently moved in with us and has been di-agnosed with early stage dementia. She was very upset when she found out what had hap-pened. I just want the perpetrator to realise this senseless act had a huge impact on a very old lady.

Regards, Robyn Gudgeon

THUMBS DOWN To the person/s who stole the supply arm and material from a power pole in front of our farm gate in Cultowa Lane Bil-limari that was waiting to be erected. The material was useless to anyone other than Essential Energy and you’re made an elderly lady extremely upset. Stupidity!

THUMBS DOWN To all Bowls Members who did not help on Sat and Sun to re-core the greens.

THUMBS UP To Ron Lynch and Sandy McDonald for volunteering to help re-core and re-sand the green, Ron who is 95 for shovel-ling sand and Sandy for spreading.

THUMBS UP To Tommy for his fantastic Christmas display in the previously empty win-dows opposite the Deli Lama. A very profes-sional job! - Judy McLaren

THUMBS UP To Manildra Amusu Theatre. They made our group feel very welcome - The Old Vic Inn

THUMBS UP To all the volunteers who put the fires out on Cudal Road and Eugowra Road this week. Thank you for your hard work

THUMBS DOWN To whoever poisoned the “Happy Wanderer” plants on the Cargo Road, just near the tip. It’s a protected plant.

Continued from page 1 Typical of her selfless nature, Virginia spoke to her oncologist Dr Peter Fox, expressing her desire to raise money for a research pro-ject, specifically one which would benefit her local area. She decided to run a book sale over Easter, with the proceeds going towards establishing the Central West Clinical Trials for Breast & Prostate Cancer. The sale was a huge success and to date, Virginia’s initia-tive has raised over $15,000 to assist future cancer sufferers in the region. Virginia was unable to win her battle against cancer but she did retain her humour, dignity and stoicism throughout her fight. She was accepting of her situation without complaint and right to the end her biggest concern was for others instead of herself. Virginia loved her family wholeheartedly, and the community was lucky enough to be enveloped in this compassion. She was truly a unique and special lady who will be very much missed by all who knew her here. Canowindra is a little less bright, but her name above the bookshop window is a last-ing reminder of her beautiful spirit.

and appreciation, and publicly thank ALL the firefighters who came out to the Nyrang Creek fire on Sunday afternoon. We hate to think what might have happened had it not been for the swift and selfless actions of all the brigades from around the district who came to help. It had the potential to be far worse thanks to nasty weather conditions. We lost count of all the RFS brigades and volunteers along with the town brigade and Police from around the district who were straight on the job and protected our prop-erty. These crews are such an essential part of a rural community and deserve acknowl-edgement. Thank you to each and every per-son who helped in some way on Sunday, our family is so very grateful- Helen Kinsela.

Paul BreenStraight From The

KMWL Stock MarketsToday, lambs are selling down at $4.50 to $4.60 per kilo dressed weight, not due to an oversupply but simply because lambs are scarce so the totals being yarded are down. “Any lambs that farmers have available should be shorn and taken through to sell to-wards the end of Feb or early autumn” says Paul Breen. “With forward contracts available for around $5 a kilo, I would recommend that farmers take up this offer and put them on grain to fatten them up, they’ll need to weigh around 24-26 kilos.” Paul reports that the cattle market has taken a dive recently, with feeder cattle up to 400kgs suffering a 35c a kilo drop- “there are a lot of feed lots full currently and the re-ally heavy export market has eased 25 to 30 cents a kilo over the last month.’ On a positive note, Paul said, “harvest is just about to begin, crops are estimated to yield very well and we are looking at a good hay season – supply of supplementary feed should be plentiful.’

Canowindra Produce Ready For HarvestHarvest 2014 has begun with first deliveries of canola being accepted at our sites. Early reports of yields of the “black gold” are good with most growers pleased with results so far. If you are a canola grower and require daily canola delivered to our sites, please contact our office and ask to be on our text message service. We currently take delivery of canola at our Canowindra, Gooloogong and Eugow-ra Silos. This season we also have a second Canowindra delivery site at the previous Graincorp Facility as CPC is currently taking the lease on this site and will be accepting canola. We also take delivery of the specialty Nuseed Monola variety at our CPC Canow-indra Facility. Which this season attracted a $95/ton premium payment. This is a variety that continues to increase in planting each season. Hay season is in full swing with the majority of cereal hay already pressed and baled along

with first cut lucerne. Smalls bales of lucerne were in demand early due to lack of supply toward the end of last hay season. Lucerne in large squares is currently sitting firm in money but little is being traded at the present time. Cereal Hay is currently trading, though not in current strong demand at this time and purchasers are currently price driven. The dry start to the hay season has been good for ce-real hay producers with most of this seasons hay receiving nil or very little rain damage. The season outlook looks promising for hay if the early hot weather and little rainfall is any indication of what this summer could be like. Second cut Lucerne will soon be availa-ble and CPC will be looking to purchase chaff quality lucerne hay for our needs along with feed grade hay , so please call our Canowin-dra Produce office if you are looking to sell your hay supplies on 6344 1504.

They’ve been servicing Cowra for sixty years and now Lachlan Steel Power Tools Plus are bigger and better than ever. They are expand-ing the site on the Young Road and shifting to more rural areas of business. The new prem-ises next door to the original will provide lots more storage space and a GMACC Pipe bend-ing machine for custom steel fabrication. In line with these improvements they are slowly changing the name to reflect their range of products and services. “Lachlan Steel doesn’t represent everything we do, as that side of the name fades Power Tools Plus will hopefully become more dominant over the next year,” says Manager Jerone Bodiam, “of course around here we’ll probably always be known as Lachlan Steel!” he joked. They provide industrial equipment and power tools and are a Ranbuild dealer so can design and build all kinds of sheds. There is

a workshop on site so any manufacturing modifications can be completed quickly and easily. They also build trailers and ute trays and have been producing the renowned Cowra Lick Feeder for 30 years. “We have sheep ramps, fencing wire, all sorts of rural based products. Our workshops give us the ability to change and modify quickly. We also have very competitive pricing long term” says Jerone. Current specials include strong, rounded sheep panels perfect for yards that don’t sink in the mud and star posts at an extremely low price of $3.98 when you bulk buy. For anyone working in a rural or farming background, it’s the perfect place to shop. Come in and meet the friendly team at 1-9 Young Road, Cowra or give them a ring on 63424188 and see what they can do to im-prove your business.

12 Bank Street, Molong 28660429 652 256

Molong has a vibe at the moment! Spending some time in the town last week and speaking with some of the store owners, they have a spring in their step and all are saying: ‘The town has undergone a transformation, with new shopfronts, renovations to existing busi-nesses and new businesses opening.’ It is very different town com-pared to 12 months ago. This new buzz was capped with the prestigious Daroo Awards held at the Molong RSL Club on Friday night, with Cabonne Mayor Michael Hayes saying “ The Daroos showcased the range of busi-ness enterprises in the Cabonne area, the hard work and ingenuity of the owners and the quality of the staff they employ.” Many local businesses in Molong took out awards on the night, reinforcing the quality found in the town. One of the new businesses on the block is Home Décor 22 at 12 Bank Street. The unique gift shop opened in October and the owner, Kath, says “I’m so excited to have the opportunity to trade with the lovely community of Molong.” They provide as many dif-ferent lines as possible to suit a wide variety of tastes. The shop includes clocks, inspirational sign, cushions, photo frames, stools and unique gift items plus a Be Enlightened candle range that smells divine. And for fellas being dragged on shopping trips fear not! They have a ‘Man Cave’ area with a selection of rustic tin signs including brands such as Ford, Holden and Shell. Bar signs are also available with ranges for men’s garages or bar rooms. “Many years ago, we owned a gift ware shop in Orange called Pebbley Creek. During that time we built many beautiful friendships with our customers and we look forward to doing it all over again with Home Decor No.22” says Kath. All that browsing works up a bit of a thirst and one of the renovated businesses in the main street is the Freemason’s Hotel. Originally established in 1860 the building has been totally renovated and now has a swish, modern feel to it and a beer garden complete with um-brellas to laze the day away in the shade. The team at Freemasons have been busy organising heaps of great events in the lead up to Christmas, including live music on Friday 19th.

Molong R.S.L has a few things you wouldn’t expect in a Club. Currently there is an Ex-Ser-vicemen and Women portrait gallery that is open to the public. It includes a collection of portraits of the men and women who served in the Boer War, WWI, WWII and the Vietnam War, painted by local artist Anne Marie Ing-ham. This collection is particularly relevant this month as we remember the fallen on Re-membrance Day. The R.S.L also has a bistro attached called “Soldiers On Riddell” and has a for hire ballroom which comes with it’s own commercial kitchen, stage, full-service bar and dance floor to boogie the night away! Just about opposite Home Décor No. 22, in the main street, is Marsden on Bank, who are the biggest cane specialists in the Cen-tral West. They also stock second hand furni-ture and collectables and are one of the few businesses who do repairs to cane furniture. Set up in Molong three years ago, Carolyn and Jeff moved from Lucknow and are very pleased they have made the move. “People in Molong have more time to browse” says Carolyn. Marsden on Bank is full of unique wall art, baskets and tables that would make a great gift. Shopping is hard work and these summer days are hot, so why not pop into Sweetness Your Lolly Shop and try some famous Mo-long Gelato? Walking into the lolly shop you find yourself surrounded by delicious treats even the sweetest of tooths are unable to resist. The range on offer, including sweets from American, New Zealand, Holland and England, will leave you spoilt for choice so while you’re deciding why not have an Art of Espresso coffee, which they serve in store.

Sweetness Your Lolly Shop and Gelato is run by sisters with great memories of their lo-cal sweet store when they were kids. They felt that the lolly aisle is supermarkets just didn’t provide the same experience, so de-cided to open an old-fashioned family run lolly shop. In 2013, they expanded and be-gan selling over 32 flavours of gelato, which you can enjoy whilst sitting in a retro booth. After a day of walking through Molong’s street, what better way to wind down than with a massage at Molong Massage & Therapies. Robyn and her team of experi-enced therapists provide individual assess-ments for personalised treatments. Molong Massage specializes in:• Remedial massage: Deep tissue manip-

ulation to promote healing and improve movement.

• Aromatherapy: Uses traditional essen-tial oils to relieve tissue trauma and relax the nervous system and promote longevity.

• Dry needling: Works to specific trigger points in the muscles reducing inflam-matory conditions and hastens healing.

• Myofacial Release: Stretches body fascia to warm, relax and energize the muscles.

• Colonic Massage: Calms the large intes-tine and promotes healthy bowel activity.

• Relaxation Massage & Indian Head Mas-sage reduces stress and relaxes the mind and body to enhance wellbeing.

Sounds too tempting to miss! We hope you enjoyed your literary drive through Molong!

The Extraordinary Life Of A JournoThis week we say goodbye to our reporter, Derek Maitland, who is leaving the Phoenix team. Derek grew up in Essex, England and had a culture shock when he moved with his family to Australia in the 60’s at the age of 14. “My mum was hanging the washing out and got attacked by a great big goanna!” he

laughed. He was always interested I writing, “I wanted to be a journalist from the age of 10.” He took a job as a journalist cadet in Sydney and by 1966 was working all over Australia. It was at this point his career took a dramatic path, “I was watching the latest news on the Vietnam War and decided I

had to become a war correspondent.” Derek hopped on a ship with £25 in his pocket and three days later arrived in Hong Kong. He went from there to Thailand’s Bangkok Post. ”They said they hired me because I was the only person who turned up at a job interview wearing a suit!” A US news agency called Copley spotted the articles and got in touch, asking Derek to be a one man bureau chief in Vietnam. He accepted and spent two years there “trying to get in as much danger as I could.” Derek reflects on his time in Viet-nam, “it was a savage and phony war fought on booze and drugs” he said. The apex for him came when he had to take up arms in an attack by crack North Vietnamese troops. “I fell to pieces with the gun trembling in my hands… for years after that I suffered from PTSD – believing I’d been a coward for break-ing under fire.” On a later assignment in war-torn Lebanon his ears were blow out by the back blast from a rocket propelled grenade. Now 71, Derek is settling into a more gentle way of life, “I have a lovely wife, Jan, I paint, I’m about to start writing books again.” When asked what journalism means to him he said, “journalism means protecting people, so they know the truth. I’ve enjoyed the Phoe-nix, after the adventure it’s been nice to get close to community people…it’s brought me down to earth.” It’s been a pleasure Derek.
