The weather certainly turned it on for lots of outdoor activities. With the Labour Day Holiday now over, our Prep students will be joining us full time and this has seen a couple of changes to their timetable, namely that Library, Italian and P.E classes will be now held on Wednesdays instead of Fridays for those students. Congratulations to our swimmers who continue to make us proud with their recent success at the division swimming trials. We are very proud of all students who have represented us along this journey and make special mention of: Sam, Riley, Nathan, Xavier, Isabella, Mawson, Maya, Chloe, Annika, Asha and Brigitte who competed again last week. Good luck to the girls’ relay team and to Isabella and Xavier who will be swimming again at the Eastern Metropolitan Meet this Friday! It should also be noted that the P & F meeting that was scheduled for tonight has been rescheduled to 1:30pm Tuesday March 21 st , to be held in the hall. This week we are looking forward to the School House Sports Day. This will be held at Morrison Reserve Athletics Track, Burdap Road Mt Evelyn. The House Captains have already started ‘chant’ practice with their colour teams and there is a definite buzz of excitement in the air. The children will be travelling by bus to the venue and will return approximately 2:00pm. If the weather is wet (as forecast), we will postpone the day until next term; let’s keep fingers and toes crossed that this won’t be necessary! Of course parents and grandparents are most welcome to join in the cheering, track side on Thursday! We continue to keep in our prayers, the year three students who are making their Reconciliation over these weeks of Lent. Congratulations to the following students from 3/4F who received the sacrament last Thursday: Aaylah, Alex, Lachlan, Ruby and Cody as well as Mia, Raya, William, Joshua and Cooper who received the sacrament for the first time today. Child Safety Code of Conduct

St Mary’s endeavours to create and maintain an environment where child safety is paramount and there is zero tolerance of any form of child abuse.

What is the purpose of a child safety code of conduct? A child safety code of conduct is intended to promote child safety in the school environment. A child safety code of conduct spells out professional boundaries and acceptable and unacceptable adult/child relationships and behaviour. It should be unambiguous, widely disseminated and supported by supervision, professional development and training. A child safety code of conduct helps schools, staff and volunteers to raise behavioural issues. It provides a reference point for discussion when there may otherwise be confusion, uncertainty, or a lack of confidence about boundaries for appropriate behaviour with children. The code specifies behaviour unacceptable for a professional relationship between a teacher and a student. All parents, relatives and caregivers attending St Mary’s Primary School to help within the classroom must hold a current Working with Children Check and must have read and signed the Code of Conduct. Please go to our website for more information.

IMPORTANT INFO FOR PARENTS

In addition to our existing forms of communication, which include blanket text messaging, we are also in the process of including

‘Skoolbag’ to our communication options. This is an app for iPhone and Android that will enhance communications with the

Parent/Student community. Parents wishing to access this service will need to install the St Mary’s School ‘Skoolbag’ App. To install the app, search for our school name (St Marys Catholic Primary School Mount Evelyn) in either the Apple App Store, or Google Play Store. We are still waiting for the Apple iPhone App to become available.

We will advise once confirmation of availability occurs. For Windows Phone, and Windows 8.1 or 10 users, search for ‘Skoolbag’ in the

Windows store, install the app and find your school.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS Sunday, 12 Mar 2017: Second Sunday of Lent - Year A Gospel

Mt 17:1-9

A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew

Jesus took with him Peter and James and his brother John and led them up a high mountain

where they could be alone. There in their presence he was transfigured; his face shone like the

sun and his clothes became as white as the light. Suddenly Moses and Elijah appeared to them;

they were talking with him. Then Peter spoke to Jesus. ‘Lord,’ he said ‘it is wonderful for us to

be here; if you wish, I will make three tents here, one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.’

He was still speaking when suddenly a bright cloud covered them with shadow, and from the

cloud there came a voice which said, ‘This is my Son, the Beloved; he enjoys my favour. Listen

to him.’ When they heard this, the disciples fell on their faces, overcome with fear. But Jesus

came up and touched them. ‘Stand up,’ he said ‘do not be afraid.’ And when they raised their

eyes they saw no one but only Jesus.

As they came down from the mountain Jesus gave them this order. ‘Tell no one about the vision

until the Son of Man has risen from the dead.’

An important note on Uniforms. Whilst it is not compulsory to purchase uniform items only

shop. We would ask that you continue to support us as we strive to ensure a disciplined atmosphere in

our school, by ensuring that your children do wear the standardised uniform.

Your children may, at times, tell you that it is okay because, “others do it” or “have it”, but this is a good

signal that it is NOT okay!

School Procedures for the Bushfire Season

BUSHFIRE AT-RISK REGISTER (BARR)

NB* St Mary’s Mount Evelyn is included on the register which means that the school will be pre-emptively closed in the event that the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) issues a Code Red Fire Danger Rating warning for the weather district in which this school is located.

School procedures for the bushfire season

Fire danger ratings and warnings are used in Victoria to provide clear

direction on the safest options for preserving life.

Schools and children’s services listed on the DET Bushfire At-Risk Register

(BARR) will be closed when a Code Red fire danger rating day is

determined in their Bureau of Meteorology district. Our school has been identified as being one of those at high

bushfire risk and is listed on the BARR.

Where possible, we will provide parents with up to four days notice of a potential Code Red day closure by letter

[and SMS message/phone tree]. A Code Red day will be determined by the Emergency Management

Commissioner no later than 1.00 pm the day before the potential closure. Once we are advised of the

confirmation of the Code Red day we will provide you with advice before the end of the school day. Once

confirmed, the decision to close will not change, regardless of improvements in the weather forecast. This

is to avoid confusion and help your family plan alternative care arrangements for your child. It is also important

to note that:

No staff will be on site on days where the school is closed due to a forecast Code Red day.

Out-of-school-hours care will also be cancelled on these days

School camps will be cancelled if a Code Red fire danger rating day is determined for the Bureau of

Meteorology district in which the camp is located.

As a bus co-ordinating school all bus routes will be cancelled.

Depending on which Bureau of Meteorology district is impacted bus route cancellations may affect our

school.

On these Code Red days families are encouraged to enact their Bushfire Survival Plan – on such days children

should never be left at home or in the care of older children. For those of us living in a bushfire prone area, the

CFA advise that when Code Red days are forecast, the safest option is to leave the night before or early on the

morning of the Code Red day. As part of preparing our school for potential hazards such as fire, we have updated and

completed our Emergency Management Plan.

What can parents do?

Make sure your family’s bushfire survival plan is up-to-date and includes alternative care arrangements in the

event that our school is closed.

Ensure we have your current contact details, including your mobile phone numbers. Keep in touch with us by

reading our newsletters,

Most importantly at this time of year, if you’re planning a holiday or short stay in the bush or in a coastal area,

you should check warnings in advance of travel and remain vigilant during your stay.

If your child is old enough, talk to them about bushfires and your family’s bushfire survival plan.

You can access more information about children’s services closures on the Department of Education and

Training website – see http://www.education.vic.gov.au/about/programs/health/pages/closures.aspx

For up-to-date information on this year’s fire season, visit the CFA website at www.cfa.vic.gov.au or call the 24-hour
