June is Adopt-a-Cat Month Each spring during “kitten season,” thousands of newborn kittens join the millions of cats

already in shelters across the country. That means your local shelter or rescue has tons of cute, cuddly newborns, in addition to all the mellow, older cats and everything in between. If you’re

Taking a trip? A boarding kennel can give your pet quality care—and can give you peace of mind.Your pet depends on you to take good care of him or her—even when you’re away. Friends and neighbors may not have the experience or time to properly look after your pet, particularly for longer trips. Leave pet care to the professionals.

A facility specializing in care and overnight boarding allows your pet to:

• Avoid the stress of a long car or airplane ride to your destination.

• Stay where they’re welcome (unlike many hotels).

• Receive more attention and supervision than they would if home alone most of the day.

• Be monitored by staff trained to spot health problems.

• Be secure in a kennel designed to foil canine and feline escape artists.

Be sure your pet knows basic commands and is well socialized around other people and pets; if your pet has an aggression problem or is otherwise unruly, he or she may not be a good candidate for boarding.

!  Before taking your pet to the kennel, make sure they are current on vaccinations.

In order to protect all pets from the ongoing canine influenza, many boarding facilities (including ours) now require the H3N2 vaccine prior to boarding. This is a two shot series, which must be given 2-4 weeks apart and 2 weeks prior to your pet being boarded.

When you arrive with your pet at the boarding facility, remind the staff about any medical or behavior problems your pet has, such as a history of epilepsy or fear of thunder. After the check-in process, hand your pet to a staff member, say good-bye, and leave. Avoid long, emotional partings, which may upset your pet. Finally, have a good trip, knowing that your pet is in good hands and will be happy to see you when you return.

Dr. Amanda MirabellaDr. Amanda Mirabella obtained

her bachelor’s degree from the University of Findlay in Findlay, Ohio while on a division II softball scholarship. She then went on to the University of Illinois for her veterinary degree. She has a special interest in soft tissue and orthopedic surgery, internal medicine, and exotic/wildlife medicine.

Dr. Mirabella grew up in the Elgin, Illinois area. In her spare time she still enjoys playing and watching sports. She also enjoys spending time with her animals including her 5 dogs: bindi, juno, roscoe, rocklin, and pippen (pictured), 6 cats, 2 rabbits, 3 turtles, her bearded dragon, and her quaker parrot.

Pets in VehiclesEvery year, hundreds of pets die from heat exhaustion because they are left in parked vehicles. Even if you think you’re just running a quick errand, your vehicle can quickly reach a temperature that puts your pet at risk of serious illness and even death, even on a day that doesn’t seem hot to you.

It’s important to note that studies have shown that cracking the windows has very little effect on the temperature rise inside the vehicle.

The temperature inside your vehicle can rise almost 20º F in just 10 minutes. In 20 minutes, it can rise almost 30º F...and the longer you wait, the higher it goes. At 60 minutes, the temperature in your vehicle can be more than 40 degrees higher than the outside temperature. Even on a 70-degree day, that’s over 110 degrees inside your vehicle!
