Treasurer (Janice Spitz) - advised that the Guild is in a good financial state. Block of the Month (Cathy Price) - showed the block for February which involves partial piecing. Membership (Muriel Hopper) - advised she will be away February 20 to March 6; Mary Forde will man the Membership table at the General Meeting. There are six tables reserved for the February stash sale; set up will be at 11:00 am on meeting day.

January 2014 Meeting Review

There were 101 people in attendance at this afternoon meeting, including six guests. Door prizes were kindly donated by Heather Buchan and Wilhelmine Hill; and the winners were Lynne Evans, Ruth Wilson, Judy Tymchuk, and Vicki Hough. The draw was won by Sharon Kryvenchuk, while the winner of the Monster Bag pattern from our guest speaker, Brenda Miller, was Nancy Sheffield. Fourteen works of art were shown during show and tell by 10 members. As usual all the quilts were inspiring. Carol Darou reminded members about the Vice President’s challenge mentioned in November’s newsletter, and showed what she has made so far for the November sale. Jean Sherwin announced that due to postal rates increasing, starting in March newsletters will not be mailed out to members who do not attend the monthly meeting unless a self-addressed stamped envelope is provided to Membership (Muriel Hopper). She suggested that members might want to receive their newsletters by email, or have a friend pick up the newsletter in their absence. Carole Armstrong provided background information for new members about the AGM that is held every year in May, and that President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer are all voted in. Jean Sherwin’s two year term as President is finished in June and Carol Darou as Vice President will become President. Therefore, we need a Vice President to be in training for President and also chair the November sale which is held every other year. Carole noted the positions that need to be filled, which were in the newsletter. At a future meeting, some time will be set aside for questions and answers and suggestions on the format of your Executive. Everyone’s input will be appreciated. Tricia Klymko spoke about the Spring Retreat planned for April 9-11, 2014. Sign up for this will take place at the February meeting. Rates are $367.13 for single occupancy, $265.03 for double occupancy, and $231.53 for triple

occupancy. Marie Amyot showed this month’s books that are listed in the newsletter. She noted that the latest edition of the CQA magazine has Ruth Rodford’s award winning quilt in it. Ruth Oblinski outlined what is planned for Program over the next few months. Cathy Price talked about the 200th Anniversary block kits that will be available for signing out in February. There will be enough background fabric in each kit for four blocks and all leftover fabric must be returned when returning the finished blocks. The kits will be grouped as easy, medium, and difficult.

Program

Our yearly challenge is coming up in April, so there's still time to consider making something. It's such a special challenge too.... celebrating the 200th anniversary of the Perth Military Settlement. We'd love to see more people become involved! The sky's the limit in what you might like to make and it doesn't have to be huge!!! If you haven’t already started, check out the insert that was with the June 2013 newsletter for full details of the challenge. ~ Ruth ~

Library Australia’s Quilts, a directory of patchwork treasures by Jenny Manning celebrates the rich history of quilts in Australian society from its beginning as a penal colony to the present day.

Around the Quilt Frame, stories and musings on the quilter’s craft edited by Kari Cornell contains seventeen essays and stories including excerpts from The Persian Pickle

Club, and Gee’s Bend: the Women and their Quilts.

West Virginia Quilts and Quiltmakers by Fawn Valentine is based on research done from 1990–2000. Information was gathered on more than 4000 quilts made before 1940. One hundred and sixty-nine coloured photos of selected quilts are given with detailed descriptions of quilt designs, patchwork patterns, fabrics, and sewing techniques, and biographies of the

quilters.

Fun Quilts for Kids published by Leisure Arts has 27 of the best quilts for girls and boys from Fons and Porter. One of the designs is a turtle quilt called Speedy.

Primitive Quilts and Projects, Spring 2014 is the latest issue from editor Kimber Mitchell. The 16 projects in this issue are identified by level of difficulty – beginner, intermediate or advanced. Thanks to Marilyn Robinson for sharing her subscrip-

tion with guild members. ~ Marie ~

Block of the Month

I can’t believe how wonderfully everyone’s blocks are coming along. You are all amazing! This month you get to try some simple partial piecing, which will open up a whole new world of patterns. I found this block at SEW MAMA SEW, designed a mirror image and a filler block to go with it. This block also opens up a ton of possibilities for you to be creative. Let’s have some fun.
