September 2016 Meeting Review

Our first meeting for 2016/2017 had an attendance of 104 members and four visitors. Door prizes were donated by Elizabeth Crocker and Sharon Kryvenchuk; winners were Rosaline Creaser, Joan Kelly, Ingrid Olimer, Alice Banford, Vicki Hough, and Tricia Klymko. Show and Tell did not disappoint; there were some wonderful creations shown with interesting stories behind them. Marilyn Robinson advised the changes made to the Constitution and Bylaws noting the membership fee increase as passed at the May AGM and the rest were housekeeping changes such as renumbering of articles and clauses, as well as formatting. Carol Darou announced that due to some medical issues our Secretary, Molly Hartin, has had to resign; Cathy Price has stepped into that position. Carol asked for a round of applause for Peggy Beckett who has stepped down from Show and Tell; she has been replaced by Bev Davidge (Sept-Dec & April-June) and Sharon Kryvenchuk (Jan-March). We still need to find a Photographer to replace Ruth Wilson, but in the meantime Arlene Pellett is filling that position. Bev Davidge advised that 19 people have signed up for the Fall Retreat on October 11-13 at the McIntosh Inn, Morrisburg. She asked everyone attending to bring a fat quarter to exchange. Marilyn Robinson noted the criteria for the President’s Challenge is in the newsletter, and it is due at the January meeting. The Viewers’ Choice will go on the Interguild travelling roadshow. Heather Buchan advised that Block of the Month is the same format as last year (a different block each month), and reminded members to sign up at her table. Marilyn Lockyer advised that there are 408 books in our library. She talked about the online catalogue of books and hand outs were available on how to access this. Edith Seward then presented the three books for this month, all of

which were donated. Nancy Jossinet and Mary Cooke advised that the December QT is 10:00-2:00 on December 7 at the Perth Civitan; $15 for lunch. Nancy reminded those members involved in the Round Robin to bring in their bags. Bridget O’Flaherty explained that she works full-time and is looking for help with Program. She outlined the October and November workshops and trunk shows Anna Cornel advised that consignment items may be sold at the Fall Sale, with 10% of the sale price being going to the Guild. Forms for consignment items will be with the October newsletter as well as available from her.

Carole Armstrong advised that more help is needed in the tea room and kitchen at the Fall Sale; she asked people to sign up at the table at the back. Marilyn Robinson thanked everyone who has donated items for the sale so far and advised that the draw for a gift certificate from the names of those who have donated will be held at the October meeting.

Platinum Edition, Quilts Without Corners by Cheryl Phillips Compared to traditional quilting methods, the patterns in this book are quick and simple to make. Sew strips of fabrics into sets, cut wedges from these strip sets. Sew the wedges together, add backing and batting, then quilt, bind and you’re finished. These quilts are fun, fast, and fantastic. Usually you will see these hung on walls.

Amish Quilts - The Adventure Continues edited by Lynn Koolish (Donated by Marilyn Robinson) This book presents a ;collection of quilts that celebrates and honours Amish traditions and the influence of Amish quilts over the years. Historically, these quilts were made using only solid colours and only by Amish women. An Amish quilt maker works within the restrictions set by her or his own church district. The Amish tend to work with simple patterns, and in

Lancaster Country are known for their starkly simple Diamond-in-a-Square. Colour selection is determined by community or region. ~ Marilyn & Edith ~

2016-2017 UFO Challenge

We all have unfinished objects, so here is an incentive to dig them out and finish them. Here are the conditions: a toonie to be tossed into the teddy bear bank for each item

entered at the time of registration; the project must be quilted; it must have been quilted by the entrant; The UFO can be any size and shape. At the June meeting, the finished items should provide a wonderful “show and tell”, and there will be a draw for the toonies. . ~ Colleen Richardson & Lois MacLean ~
