Executive Meeting Report — June 2016

Carol Darou thanked Barb Dodds for hosting the meeting and welcomed those incoming Executive/Committee members who were able to attend. President (Carol Darou) - under Business Arising, there was discussion the ceremony for presenting the charity quilt to the recipients. She advised that Muriel has created a calendar that might be helpful to all members to have on hand; this was reviewed and it was agreed that it would be printed and provided to members next year. Vice President (Marilyn Robinson) - noted that with the absence of a Vice President so far for next year, the learning curve will be shortened once somebody fills that position. The VP usually arranges the December QT, and will need somebody to do that this year. Mary Cook and Nancy Jossinet (incoming Outreach Coordinators) volunteered for this. Past President (Jean Sherwin) - advised she has updated the inventory of Guild supplies. The Bylaws/Constitution need to be updated to reflect the recent membership fee increase, and noted that other past changes also need to be updated. Lynne Green, Heather Buchan and Molly Hartin volunteered to form a committee to review the Bylaws and update. Jean advised that she has found two people who will share the Photographer position. Treasurer (Janice Spitz) - the Treasurer’s Report was presented and approved. Block of the Month (Heather Buchan) - showed this month’s block sample. Library (Marie Amyot) - showed the books obtained this month, which were donated by Pamela Griffin and Sharon

Kryvenchuk. Membership (Muriel Hopper) - membership form has been printed. Newsletter (Lynne Green) - thanked everyone for providing their articles for the newsletter early as she will be away when the newsletter is usually sent to the printers. Outreach (Loree Tannett) - in Loree’s absence, Carol showed the finished charity quilt which will be presented to Interval House at this month’s meeting. Program (Beverley Davidge/Alexis Mongeau) - advised that Bert Flaming of Grantham Books will be at the June meeting. Bridget O’Flaherty (incoming Program Coordinator) gave an overview of the Interguild meeting she attended. Publicity (Arlene Pellett) - no poster as June is our pot luck. Social (Barb Dodds) - provided an update on helpers; everything going smoothly.

May 2016 Meeting Review

As May is also our Annual General Meeting, this took place at the start of the meeting. Carol Darou advised that Annual Reports from the Executive and Committees were in a manila folder on the front table for members to read. The budget year to date was on the wall for members to see. A vote was required by the membership on the Executive’s recommendation of a small increase in the annual membership fee. Several members made comments both for and against an increase, as well as making other suggestions and asking questions about the budget. After a ballot vote, the increase in membership fee passed with 82 members for and 21 members against. There were 103 members and no guests in attendance at our May meeting. Thanks were given to Sharon Kryvenchuk, Wilhelmine Hill, and Gail McClusky for their door prize donations; winners were Sharon Kryvenchuk, Sharon Bramwell, Lee Steele, Judith Tymchuk, Arlene Pellett, and Diane Gallagher. There were 11 items for Show and Tell, including a group of cheesecloth portraits from the Mary Pal workshop participants. Carol confirmed that there will be Show and Tell at the June meeting, noting that the only reason there wasn't at last year’s June meeting was due to lots happening in relation to our 25th Anniversary Party. Jean Sherwin (Past President) outlined the duties for both the Vice President and the Photographer positions, noting

that volunteers were still needed to fill those positions. Marilyn Robinson (Vice President) advised that she is seeking donations of fabric for cloth bags to be made for the Fall Sale purchases. She noted that there is a list of ideas for items for the sale at the back table, along with Christmas stocking panels and Advent Calendar panels if anyone would like to make them up for the sale. Heather Buchan showed a sample block of May’s Block of the Month, which incorporates curved piecing skills. Marie Amyot presented the books for the Library this month. She noted that under her library report in the newsletter there is a link that members can use that will show a listing of all the books in our library. Take the

opportunity of looking at this so you can try and find the book you would like to take out ahead of time. Beverley Davidge noted that in September, Program has Sherida Giddings coming to present a trunk show and teach a workshop; and in October, Christine Baker will be coming to our Guild.

I’m a Quilter written by Ada Moyles

(in CQA/ACC Magazine, Winter 2015)

Threads are clinging to my clothes How they got there goodness knows,

But it’s normal, I suppose. I’m a quilter.

Fabric stowed beneath the bed. In the cupboards overhead

Are boxes full of coloured thread I’m a quilter.

Meals are skimpy around here. Take-out is our frequent fare.

Unused cookbooks everywhere. I’m a quilter.

I sew by day. I sew by night. I even have a special light

For rainy days, to make it bright. I’m a quilter.

My stash gets bigger every day. I wish those sales would go away.

Can I stop myself? No way! I’m a quilter.

Thimbles line my window sill. All the latest gadgets will

Find a place. I buy more still.

I’m a quilter.

Quilts are hanging everywhere. Empty spaces, very rare.

There is not an inch to spare. I’m a quilter.

My husband has to go away. I should be sad, but I must say

I plan to cut and sew all day. I’m a quilter.

My friends are coming round to tea. (It really is a quilting bee.)

But we’ll have lots of fun, you see, They’re quilters.

We’re off to see a new quilt show. It’s nearly twenty-nine below.

But that won’t stop us going. No. We’re all Canadian quilters.

Top Row: Cheesecloth Portraits

(Mary Pal workshop participants); Maple Leaves Forever (Sharon Kryvenchuk); 2nd Row: Marisa & Friends Quilt

Newsletter Deadline The deadline for September’s newsletter articles is September 15.

Did you know? The 1st Baptist Church in Smiths Falls is supporting an orphanage, Centre Vie, in Haiti. They are packing a shipping container with sewing machines, fabric, needles, thread,

scissors, bobbins, and other sewing supplies. If you wish to donate a sewing machine or any other item, you can contact the 1st Baptist Church at 613-283-1579 or call Worth Saving Charity Shop in Perth at 613-812-5501. (submitted

by Carol Darou)

You can repurpose a fruit tray from the supermarket as a supply organizer. The round centre portion fits a pincushion perfectly, and the other compartments are great for sewing needles, pins, etc. There is even a cover for the tray so you can take it with you to retreats and classes. Patchwork & Quilting, April 2016; submitted by Carole Armstrong)

Your tips, hints or general news are needed for this section or elsewhere in the newsletter, so please email or give them to Lynne Green. Thanks.
