What is a web license for Kurzweil 3000?

• Web License - This edition involves a floating license component that is web based where the licenses are stored on the Kurzweil Education firefly server and an Internet connection is required for access. A user database is configured by the customer using the firefly based web portal which allows unique user logins to the server.

What is firefly?

• firefly is a Flash®-based website and iPad app that allows core Kurzweil 3000 functionality. The product functions as an extension of your Kurzweil 3000 Web License subscription, as you may access and upload files to the same web storage area to share files between the products.

• firefly is a web-based text-to-speech reading tool that allows students to access documents in his/her Kurzweil library from any computer or device with an internet connection.


Flipped Classroom

Firefly can help you prepare for lessons before your class. You may read before the class session, while in-class time is devoted to exercises, projects, or discussions.

Open the SD 22 Universal Library folder/public/short_stories


The firefly Toolbar appears at the top of the open file, containing the following buttons from left to right:

Personal options:

1. Select the Options box (on the left of the green play button)if you want to….- speed up or slow down the reading-read one word at a time, a line or a whole sentence or paragraph.

2. Select the box with the arrow (on the right of the play button) if you want to….-use a colour to highlight an important part of the book that might help with answering questions or completing a project.

3. The 3rd box on the right is a dictionary that you can use to help your understanding of the vocabulary


Zoom/Dictionary

To change the zoom setting, click the Zoom button. Choose a range from 100 to 300% or Fit to Width option to fit the document to the browser window width.

Dictionary: To look up a word, select a word, then click the Dictionary button. In the Definition window that opens, a Play button is available to read the definition.


Back to Library and Personal Options

The Back to Library button takes you back to the Universal Library

Options are:


To change settings, click the Options button.

Set options for:

• Reading Speed: Faster, Slower

• Reading Unit: Word Line, Sentence*,

Paragraph

• Reading Mode: Continuous, Self-Paced,

Word by Word

• Voice (select Violetta for Spanish)

• Toolbar placement: Top or Bottom of

screen


Navigating Pages

To navigate to the Previous page or Next page, click the large Left Arrow or Right Arrow button on either side of the page display. To go to a specific page, enter the page number in the Go to page box at the bottom of the firefly window, and then click the Arrow button or press Enter.


Tool choices are: Select Text, Highlight Text, Erase Highlighting

Highlighting Text and Saving Highlights

To highlight text in a document:

1) Hover over the Tool Selection button and select a color pen from the Highlight Text area.

2) In the document, select the text you want to highlight.

3) Repeat step 1 whenever you want to highlight in a different color.

4) When you are done, click the Select Text button to end the highlighting function.


Highlighting and Erasing highlights

To erase highlighting:

1) Hover over the Tool

Selection button and click the Erase Highlights button.

2) In the document, drag-select the highlighted text you want to erase.

3) When you are done, click the Select Text button to

end the erase function.

To save highlights:

After highlighting, navigate to another page or click the Back

to Library button. Do not close the browser or leave the firefly website, otherwise, you may lose the highlights for the session. Notes about saving highlights:

• In firefly, you can view highlights that were added to a

.KES document in Kurzweil 3000. Be sure to save the

document to the Library from Kurzweil 3000 after you

add or change the highlights.

• Highlighting added in firefly will not display when you

open that document in Kurzweil 3000.


Using Firefly by Kurzweil to translate part of a book to another language (use the short story “A Secret Lost in the Water”)

• Open the document you want.

• Highlight the text you want to translate, and with the text selected click on the Translate button.

• Choose your language


Translation

To find a translation, select a word or text, then click the Translation button.

Choose a language: English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, or Finnish. After a translation is complete, use the Play button to read the translation.


Click the translate button and wait

You will be able read in your chosen language.

Can I only read or can I listen to the

translation?

Those in bold are languages that firefly can speak the

translated text. The languages below the line and starting with

Africaans can only be read by the student, but cannot be

spoken.


How can Kurzweil help you?

• Helps you to retain more information through listening than reading

• Assists you with monitoring and revising their typed work, as hearing the text read aloud may assist students in catching grammatical errors

• Can improve your sight reading and decoding abilities

• Can improve your reading comprehension (difficulty hearing letter-sounds) as you can learn to decode new words when they are highlighted as they are read aloud

• Kurzweil Education was founded in 1996. The roots of the company extend back to 1976 and the introduction of the world’s first reading system, the Kurzweil Reading Machine.

• The company was later acquired by Cambium Learning which uses technology and focuses on student-centered learning, giving students the tools they need to reach their own unique potential.Ray Kurzweil, author,

The Student Continuum

Kurzweil 3000 supports a continuum of students…

• Minimal support

• those students requiring only a few of the program features to complete tasks

Kurzweil is used for many reasons :• to read aloud

• Track words or phrases silently

• Magnify text for low vision

• Allow electronic note extraction from text to minimize fine motor exertion

• Support the writing pathway/process

• Word prediction for writing/motor support

• Spell-check / edit features


DISCUSSION: Who will use Kurzweil? Chat box.

Which features are most useful for particular students. For example, a student who keyboards quickly may find that using word prediction slows him down.

Another student may find word prediction so useful that an investigation of more powerful software that specializes in word prediction is warranted.

For students who only need the text-to-speech capability, the teacher may locate a free text-to-speech tool that the student will be able to use at home.


Learning Style Auditory Learner

If you are an auditory learner, you learn by hearing and listening. You understand and remember things you have heard.

You store information by the way it sounds, and you have an easier time understanding spoken instructions than written ones.

You often learn by reading out loud because you have to hear it or speak it in order to know it.

What is Kurzweil 3000? Kurzweil 3000 is an integrated scan and read software program that provides multisensory access to reading material with powerful tools for reading, writing, test-taking and learning.

Kurzweil 3000 does not teach reading and writing, it is a tool that provides a digital text-to-speech environment for implementing proven reading, writing and learning strategies.

Launch Kurzweil • Double-click on icon.

Read the Web icon:Click the Read the Web icon in the Main toolbar.The web browser opens and connects to your home page. In Internet Explorer, the Kurzweil 3000 Read the Web toolbar appears at the bottom of the browser.

In Firefox, the Read the Web toolbar appears below the browser toolbars. Use Internet Explorer to read Math and Science notation.

Click the Read button to begin reading.

Customizing the TOOLBARS

• You may have noticed by

now that some people have

different icons on their

toolbars….

KURZWEIL allows for easy adjustment of toolbars in order to personalize the environment to the user.

You may want to ADD icons or DELETE icons from your tool-bar…….

To highlight or circle text: Select the text to highlight or circle, then click the desired color Highlighter pen or Circle tool in the Study Skills toolbar. OR click the color Highlighter or Circle tool first, then select the text.

To erase highlights or circles: Select the text that has color highlighting or circling, then click the Eraser in the Study Skills toolbar. OR click the Eraser first, then select the highlighted or circled text.

To find highlighted or circled text: Open the Edit menu, select Object from the Find submenu. In the Find Object dialog, select Highlight. Click Find.

Green is Study Skills toolbar.


Create a Sticky or Text Note: Sticky and Text Notes are available only in image documents. Click the Sticky Note or Text Note button in the Study Skills toolbar. Click in the text where you want to place the note. Type in the note, click outside the note when you are finished.Create a Footnote: Click in the document where you want to place the Footnote marker. Click the Footnote button in the Study Skills toolbar. In an image document, a number marker appears in the note location and the Footnote window opens. In a text document, the text closest to the note changes to blue underlined text and a number appears next to the note. Type in the Footnote window. When you are finished, click the Close Footnote button in the Study Skills toolbar.

Use the Open button on the General Toolbar to access the Sample Documents folder and open the document Time Travel. • Set the Reading Mode to Continuous and the Reading Unit to Sentence and read the entire document. If it is too slow, increase the reading speed.

• Click the Yellow Highlight tool on the Study Skills Toolbar to turn it on.

Studying with Kurzweil

• 1. Open - Sample Documents – Open – Time Travel.kes – Open

• 2. Make KURZWEIL read the document.

• Select yellow highlighter from Study Skills toolbar.

• 4. Click and drag to highlight text.

• 5. Try using green, pink, blue highlighters.

As you move the mouse cursor back onto the page, the arrow pointer should look like a marker.

• Highlight the following vocabulary words by double clicking or by holding the left mouse button down and dragging over the word with the marker:

o physicist

o black hole

o ergo sphere

o gravitational

• Hint: You could also select the word first with the mouse. Then turn the Highlight Tool on to highlight it.


Extracting highlighted vocab. to a new file.

• On the Main Menu, go to File and choose Extract -Extract Notes and Highlights. Make sure yellow is checked off. Click OK.

• These vocabulary words will be extracted into a separate file


Finding Definitions for Vocabulary

• In the new file, use the Definition button on the General Toolbar to find the appropriate definition for each word. Make sure that you highlight or move the cursor in front of the word to find its definition.

• Select the appropriate definition (with the mouse).

• Students can use their own vocabulary and definitions list to study for the upcoming Quiz.

Word processing

The following buttons, located on the Writing Toolbar, behave the same as in an ordinary word processor. Experiment with each button.


Your turn to try writing!Click the New button on the General Toolbar to open a new blank document.

• Type a few lines of sample text.

• Who are you?

• What’s something about yourself (a skill that you have)?

• Try the Reading, Definition, Synonym, Syllables, and Spell buttons on the General Toolbar with your typed text. Do all the buttons work with your text?

Change the font. Bold it all (bold one word). Make it single-spaced/double-spaced. Center it all.


Have Kurzweil read what you wrote:

• Place cursor at the beginning of what you wrote.

• Click on read arrow on MAIN toolbar.


Adjusting the typing echoOn the Main Menu, go to Tools - Options and click on General at the

left.

• Under Speak as Typing, check the boxes for Whole Words and Whole Sentences.

• Click Apply and OK.

• Go back to your document and type more text.

• You should hear the words and sentences echoed as you type.

The WRITING PROCESS

• WRITING PROCESS……from Brainstorming, to Outlines to Split Screen, to a Final Draft and Review!

Brainstorm:a graphic organizer that lets you quickly collect and organize your thoughts.


Brainstorm

Close all open Kurzweil files.

• Click the Start Writing button in the Writing Toolbar to start a new Brainstorm Web. When the New File Options window pops up, select New Brainstorm and Blank and click OK.

The Main Idea bubble appears in the document.

Replace the Main Idea text by double clicking the text and type in a main idea. In this example, type the word Vacation.

• Click the Vacation bubble. A small square will appear in each corner.

• Click the Quick Takes icon on the Brainstorm Palette.

• A red lightning bolt arrow appears to the right of the word.This lets you know that the Quick Takes is active. • Type additional thoughts related to Vacation: o Type Hiking next to the red lightning bolt arrow and press enter. o Type Camp next to the red lightning bolt arrow and press enter. o Type Farm next to the red lightning bolt arrow and press enter.

Click on the text of Camp to add a subtopic. Click Quick Takes and type o Bitten by wasps o Rode horse


Brainstorm

• Click the Arrange button in the palette to organize the thoughts.


Brainstorm

• Change the subtopic information to different shapes and colours. Click Hiking. From the palette click the Rectangle button to change the shape.

• Click the Fill Colour palette button to change the colour.


Brainstorm

• Click the bitten by wasps bubble and select the Note button from the Brainstorm Palette. A blank Note Window opens. o Type “five bites, lots of swelling, spent three hours in the hospital”.


Outline

• Switch to the Outline. From the Writing Toolbar click on Outline . Any topics, subtopics or notes from Brainstorm are moved into Outline. You can see from the following example that the notes are organized in a hierarchical fashion.


Outline

• The Outline Palette opens when you are in Outline. The Outline Palette allows you to make changes to the type of numbering (prefix label), topics, subtopics or add notes.

• Note: Any changes that you make in Outline will also be changed in Brainstorm.


Split Screen

• Brainstorm and Outline are part of the pre-writing process. In Split Screen View, students begin the drafting process.

• Click the Split Screen View icon in the Writing Toolbar.

• Note that the screen is split in two. The outline notes are on the left hand side. You cannot work with these here. You will need to highlight them and drag them to the right side of the screen so that further editing can be done i.e., adding capitals, punctuation, additional thoughts, creating full sentences etc.

• With the Split Screen View go to Main Menu Write Review or click the Review Writing icon in the Writing Toolbar.

• A Review Checklist opens to the left of the Outline in the Split Screen View.


Test Taking

Tests can be scanned into Kurzweil to support students who need reading or writing support.

• Multiple Choice – have student use highlighting or circle tools to select answer

• Fill in the Blanks or True/False – place a text note where answer is needed. Student can then click on text note to fill in answer.

• Essay/Short Answer – place a text note where answer is required. Student can click on text note to write answer.

• Matching – student can highlight and drag answer to appropriate location on the page.


Notes

• Useful for student research or studying

• Teacher-created content can instruct or scaffold

• Five kinds of notes:• Footnotes – identified by number marker

• Voice – record audio messages

• Sticky – yellow opaque notes that cover a portion of the document or image

• Text – useful for filling in blanks, true/false, or essay questions

• Bubble – open while you are reading in continuous mode. Can contain questions such as Multiple Choice, Text Answers, or Matches. Can extract these notes for assessment.

Scanning Documents

• Need a scanner.

• Plug in scanner.

• Scanner drivers should load automatically.

• Open Kurzweil. Select SCANfrom Main Toolbar.

• Document will scan into Kurzweil automatically and auto-rotate.


Scanning Electronic Copy

• Most documents saved in .txt (text format), pdf. doc or docx) can be scanned into Kurzweil.

• KESI Virtual Printer

• In any word processor, go to File > Print > Select KESI Virtual Printer > Print.
