These limestone outcrops can still be seen on the steep slopes. The bushland at Birdwood Parade has an elevated position that offers views of the Swan River, Kings Park and Perth City. The parkland areas adjacent to Birdwood Parade contain many significant habitat trees such as Marri’s and Jarrahs. Western Long-neck Turtles, also known as Oblongs are rapidly declining in suburban lakes around Perth. Dog and raven attacks as well as declining rainfall are playing havoc with their numbers. These carnivorous creatures play an important role in controlling mosquito infestations as their hatchlings love eating the little wrigglers. Keeping dogs on leads near wetlands is one way to help to protect them. Claremont Park, located in the Town of Claremont adjoins the Council Offices on Stirling Highway. Take a break and enjoy the shade of the wonderful old indigenous trees where birdlife abounds in the treetops. After crossing Stirling Highway, you enter the shopping precinct, and pass the Claremont Hotel. Following the markers will link you up with Rowe Park and the Yange Kep Bidi intersecting point. Karrakatta Cemetery first opened for burials in 1899 and has Monuments and headstones bearing many famous names. These include those of university founders, writers and historians, state premiers and other auspicious individuals. Enjoy the walk through the stately stands of cypress trees a hallmark of Karrakatta, that preside over beautiful garden areas in the historic heart of the cemetery. Originally a Dairy farm, the reserve was once planted with various foreign grasses. Large trees from World War II were felled by soldiers from the nearby hospital as part of their therapy and rehabilitation, and these can still be seen. The reserve offers an almost circular walk via the Bill Day path presenting a wonderful opportunity to view a vast array of wildflowers especially pretty during the spring.
