5 feet 2 inches of impressing fitness PALM CITY — Earlier this year

Vanessa and Lance Richard thought to get a little healthier. “I didn’t really plan it, to join

this kind of bodybuilding compe-tition,” Vanessa said. “My hus-band and I started working out. We wanted to look healthy and eat healthy.” The 27-year-old took top spot in

the Women’s Figure Open Di-vision at the National Physique Committee’s Florida Gold Cup & Amanda Marinelli Fitness, Figure & Bikini Classic on Sat. Nov. 16. It was Vanessa’s second body-building competition, and she was up against 46 women. Not just 46 other women. She was up against women who’ve been training and competing some-times for years. Lance said he was startled and ecstatic for his

wife’s big win. “At the end, they had a pose off,”

he said. “These other girls were a lot bigger than her. But, she took the whole thing.”With that win under her belt,

the 5-foot-2-inch Vanessa is able to move onto the national meets where she’ll likely eventu-ally meet her inspiration — Erin Stern, the 2010 and 2012 Ms. Figure Olympia.“I read about her in Oxygen

magazine,” Vanessa said. “She’s also from Florida. When I saw her profile, I said, ‘Wow, she’s really inspiring.’” Vanessa said she’s never been

athletic before recently. Neither was her family. The Indian River State College student said Lance and she were like many busy folks. Not really paying much attention to their health. “We’d been eating out a lot,” she

said. “We were eating fatty food. I started to get thick. I talked to him and said, ‘Let’s go to the gym

and work out.’” Lance recalls it was him bring-

ing up the whole gym thing. “I said, ‘Let’s go to the gym and

start working out,’” he said. “My friend was a trainer.”Well, whoever suggested it first,

the couple started getting some health and fitness training from Greg Blackman at Results Gym. “When I started to work out, I

started seeing great results,” Va-nessa said. Within months Blackman sug-

gested she compete at bodybuild-ing contests. Vanessa said win-ning competitions is wonderful. She’s hoping to use her health and fitness successes to help others. She’s turning her college studies toward health and nutri-tion. “I also have a plan to get my per-

sonal training certificate,” Vanes-sa said. “I want to help women, and men, to be in shape and eat healthy food.”

Palm City’s Vanessa Richard went to the gym earlier this year to get a little healthier. That started a fitness regimen that took the 27-year-old to top spot in the Women’s Figure Open Division at the National Physique Committee’s Florida Gold Cup & Amanda Marinelli Fitness, Figure & Bikini Classic on Sat. Nov. 16.

tation figures there’ll be about 25,800 trips a day over the bridge the first year it’s open. More in following years, especially after Martin Highway gets two more lanes. That’s supposed to happen by about 2017. By the time the bridge has

about 43,000 trips a day, things will taper off. That’s the capac-ity threshold for a four-lane bridge before it hits what traf-fic engineers call a service level D. Around the time a four-lane bridge has that many trips, folks start looking at other commuting options. But, if traffic never exceeds that

25,800 trips a day, Veterans Memorial will carry about 258 million trips over its 3,100 feet by the time it needs any major work. The Veterans Memorial Bridge is a 100-year design. That is, if built correctly, it should be at least 100 years before it needs major maintenance. To put that in perspective, the

neighbor to the north, the Palm City Bridge, was first built in 1919. The first wooden bridge reportedly cost about $63,500, or slightly more than 1,000 times less than the nearly $63.9 million winning bid to build Veterans Me-morial. Translated to today’s dol-lars, the first bridge crossing the St. Lucie River to directly connect

Palm City and Stuart was about $884 thousand. It clearly wasn’t a 100-year de-

sign. The Palm City Bridge was dam-

aged by the Okeechobee Hurri-cane, 1928. Then by another in 1949. By the 1950s, crews had done a lot of work repairing and reinforcing the bridge. They also added a concrete riding surface. In 1970, the old wooden turn bridge was replaced by a two-lane arching concrete bridge. That one cost about $1.2 million. That’s right about $7.3 million in today’s dollars. In 1991 a second span adding two more lanes to the Palm City Bridge opened. That expansion came in as an $8.7 million project, or about $15.6 million today. Terry Rauth, deputy county

engineer, said planning for the Veterans Memorial Bridge started shortly after the Palm City Bridge hit about 43,000 trips a day. That was in 1996, about five years after the four-laning was done. In the ‘90s, projections were that the Palm City Bridge would have about 64,700 trips a day within a decade if another bridge wasn’t built and opened. “But it didn’t,” Rauth said. “It

went to 44,507 (trips a day). The reason is the 43,300 (trips) is more than a four-lane road can handle. People start finding other ways. They start avoiding it.” To avoid the Palm City Bridge,

folks started again using a route followed in the ‘20s and ‘40s when hurricanes damaged the Palm City Bridge — south then east. While the Veterans Memorial

Bridge cost about $64 million to build, the entire project is more than $100 million when right-of-way acquisition and other road improvements are counted. So, where’d the money come from? The Federal Highway Adminis-

tration is funding the construc-tion through the American Recov-ery and Reinvestment Act. The bridge was originally estimated to cost more than $120 million to build; the entire project could have tipped near or over $200 million. However, due to the con-struction bust in 2008, the cost of building materials dropped sig-nificantly, and contractors gen-erally lowered their bids. Martin County got the Veterans Memori-al project on the cheap. The Roosevelt Bridge connecting

Stuart to Jensen Beach is about 4,500 feet, and cost about $83.7 million. It opened in 1997. Denti said it seemed more likely

that the new bridge will eventual-ly be removed than replaced. He said it’ll likely still be standing hundreds of years from now. “With a bridge of this quality,

they become obsolete before they need repairs,” he said. “My grand-kids will have jet packs. They won’t need no stinking bridge.”

More on the bridge:How big, howtall, how heavy?

PALM CITY — The Veterans Me-morial Bridge won’t be the grand-daddy in Martin County. At about 3,100 feet, it’s still a little brother to the Roosevelt Bridge, which spans more than 4,500. But, it’s still quite a bit longer than the Palm City Bridge’s 1,900 feet. Crews finished pouring the last

of its 19 decks, or riding surfaces, on Oct. 26. Something as seem-ingly simple as pouring a spot of cement takes on titanic dimen-sions in bridge construction. A single deck on the bridge is 145 feet long, 115 feet wide. That’s 600 cubic yards of concrete, or 65 mixers worth. The bridge, which many folks

are still calling the Indian Street Bridge, weighs about 149.4 mil-lion pounds. The foundations dip as much as 75 feet underground to hoist the 8.5-inch thick riding surfaces about 65 feet in the air, giving boaters a minimum of 55 feet of clearance. George Denti, project manager,

said the National Geographic So-ciety figures the average elephant weighs in at about 9.5 tons. Since, he said, those elephants average 26 feet that means it’d take a 39-mile line of elephants to equal the weight of the bridge. Enough cable to stretch from

Palm City to Hallandale Beach. That’s how much is getting put into the Veterans Memorial Bridge. Bridges are built in parts with cables joining them. The cables are stretched to 500,000 pounds per square inch. “It makes (the bridge) act as one

big happy unit,” Denti said. The cables are weaved through

beams with ducts. If stretched

straight, the cables would be the length of three and a half mar-athons — 92 miles. That’s 179 tons of steel that’ll hold up an estimated 25,800 trips a day for the first year of the bridge’s life. Those cables weaving through

the bridge are made of high-car-bon steel designed for super strength and low relaxation. “Those qualities are produced

by a rigorous manufacturing process,” Denti said. “It’s a very specialized industry.” Relaxation is a metallurgical

term describing how metal will stretch over time under pressure. An experiment to demonstrate the concept is to size a rubber band and place it around an object it narrowly fits when stretched. Af-ter a few days, remove the rubber band and size it again. “The rubber band no longer

returns to its original size,” Denti said. The stretching also weakens the

rubber band, making it easier to break. The same’s true for metal cables that aren’t made with that important low relaxation. Crews will wrap touchup work

by Christmas. Then a couple guys will take down the barricades, and folks will start giving Veter-ans Memorial a spin to see what they got for about $65 million — along with two year and eight months of waiting. In addition to four lanes with ad-

ditional turning lanes at the ends, the bridge’s 120-foot girth sports 10-foot shoulders for pedestrians and bicyclists. Fishing, however, will be prohibited, because of a lack of parking.Next Valentine’s Day, a lot of

couples might be strolling over Veterans Memorial Bridge for a

ing hot dogs and ice cream, the children will get their first bit of law enforcement training. How and when to call 911. And what happens when they do. “We’re going to take them up

and show them the dispatch center to take away some of the mystery,” the sheriff said. Snyder said there was a text-

book case of good crime preven-tion that started with a knowl-edgeable teenager earlier this year. “Recently here in Martin County

we had a high schooler call 911 when the pillowcase burglars were at his door,” Snyder said. That was 16-year-old Bryce

Miranda, Palm City. On June 25, the Sheriff’s Office caught three suspected pillowcase burglars from Broward County because of the youth’s good observation and quick action. Rather than pan-icking, or foolishly confronting them, when the bad guys came around, Bryce barricaded himself

in a room and called 911 with good descriptions of what was happening. Deputies grabbed one of the

three burglars at the family’s home. Snyder said “Movie with the

Sheriff” has three aims. One is fostering good relationships between law enforcement and children. The next is, of course, is teaching families about how and when children should use the emergency number. Then there’s giving children a spot of fun during the holiday season. Oh, and grants are paying for it. “We have money that comes in

that’s not taxpayer money, but it’s earmarked for education,” Snyder said. And Dairy Queen is donating

the ice cream. Christine Christofek Weiss,

Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman, said about 125 children and youths attended the first “Mov-ie with the Sheriff.” The event is free. Adults must accompany children.

Local golf pro recognized nationally

PALM CITY – Mike Malizia, director of golf instruction at Harbour Ridge Yacht and Coun-try Club, knows golf from differ-ent perspectives. As a PGA and nationwide tour player, he played in the 2000 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach. As an instructor, he has worked with tour professionals and amateur golfers. This year, he was named one of Florida’s 50 Best teachers by Golf Digest magazine. The Palm City resident has

been playing golf on the Treasure Coast for years. He was on the golf team at Martin County High School, from which he graduated in 1988. “It was the only year we won

State,” he said. “After high school, I turned professional and toured for 16 years.” While Malizia loved playing

golf, it was always the game itself that intrigued him. “I always had a passion for why

things happened in the game,” he said. “I wanted to dissect the swing. To be a really good play-er, you need good mechanics. That’s how I help all my students, taking something complex and making it simple. We always say you can’t be the coach and the student.”

Malizia works with 11 active tour pros and many non-profes-sionals. He is particularly inter-ested in the biomechanics of each student. He is a Titleist Perfor-mance Institute Level 2 Certified Instructor and has Bio Golf Swing Dynamics certification, as well. “The TPI certification is about

how the body works with mus-cles,” Malizia said. “I can run you through a series of tests and tell you what your limitations are with muscle mobility and stabili-ty. The Bio Golf certification deals with skeletal issues. Based on skeletal measurements and body structure, we can tell how the body will move and how the joints work. “These are absolutes. If the

arm is a certain length, we can’t make it longer. It helps them un-derstand how they should swing the clubs. There is no right way or wrong way to swing. It’s the way your body is designed to be most efficient. If someone is tight in the hip flexors, we can put the body in a position to increase mobility.” Malizia said that he brings his

tour students a special view of the game. “I’m coaching them on a road

I’ve walked down,” he said. “I know the mental stuff as well as the physical stuff. Not too many former players are instructors. Someone said that to be success-

ful as an athlete, you have to be selfish, and that as an instruc-tor, you have to be giving. I like to help people find a better way to solve a problem. That’s why I teach. When you’re in the star-dom business, you have to be selfish, because everyone wants something.” Malizia sits on the board of the

Toastmasters group in Stuart, the Talking Heads. He does speaking engagements, but that was not his primary reason for becoming involved. “I really like it,” he said. “I felt

that one of the areas I wanted to improve in teaching would be to become an expert communica-tor.” Malizia has become a sought-af-

ter speaker on effective communi-cation skills in golf instruction. Malizia teaches both residents

and non-residents at Harbour Ridge. He encourages people to start golf at any age. “If you played sports growing

up, you learned the proper way to transfer energy,” he said. “Golf becomes a lot easier. For kids, he said that it has to be intro-duced properly. “It has to be fun, a game,” he

said. “You can’t teach instruction as much as a game. They’ll learn as they go.” For Malizia, Harbour Ridge is

the perfect place to be for golf and for his close-knit family. He

is married to Judy. His brother, Tony, is baseball coach at Port St. Lucie High school, his mother Ann, lives in Palm City, and his sister, Angela, in Port St. Lucie. While he would agree that you can always improve, there’s not much he would change. For information about Mike Mal-

izia and golf instruction, visit the website www.mikemaliziagolfper-formance.com. For information about Harbour

bit of romance. Among features of the new bridge spanning the St. Lucie River be-tween Martin Highway and Indian Street are six overlooks with benches, where folks can sit for a bit of sightseeing and conversation. “I call them lover’s leaps, where they can

do the Romeo-and-Juliet thing if they want,” Denti said. “These bridges become destinations for pedestrians. It’s the best of all worlds. We build these bridges not only for cars but pedestrians.”Veterans Memorial Bridge is a 100-year

design. That is, if it was done correctly, it should be at least 100 years before it needs major maintenance.Construction started in April, 2011.

why this country is called a great country, because when some-

thing happens in any country, we always step up.”Items collected included MRE’s

(meals ready to eat), other non-perishable food, blankets, water, clothing, shampoo, toothpaste, flashlights and first aid kits. The packages were sent in bulk to the Philippine Red Cross, McGinnis said.“It is really the work of the com-

munity. It’s not just me. I think I was just an instrument to initiate it. Every single hand has put in to make it happen,” she said.McGinnis, who has family and

storm struck as “agonizing.”“I had that feeling of unknown.

Not knowing what’s going on and you watch all the news, the tragedy and so many deaths and you haven’t heard from anyone,” she said. “That feeling itself is the worst for you. You feel so help-less. You can’t do anything. But again, you have to stay strong and do something and hope one day you’re going to get a hold of them.” “I did not stop on Facebook

watching for (the chat light) to turn green to see if they’re online or if they’re chatting,” she said.McGinnis’ sister called after 72

hours to say she and the rest of the family were OK, but that the area was all but leveled.“The people are still grateful that

even though they were flooded, they’re still grateful that they have their lives, they have their family and they still have their shelter,” McGinnis said.Palm City resident and Philip-

pine native Benne-Lane Church knows the same torment as McGinnis. It took Church’s family in the remote coastal area of Casanayan more than a week to call. Although she had not yet heard from them as of the Nov. 16 supply drive, she still attended to help.“I (was) hoping and I have faith

in God. I had to occupy my mind,” Church said. “I was think-ing by doing this I could remind myself that there are people that still need my help.”Church’s family informed her

supplies shipped in from around the world have already been put to good use to save lives. The outpouring of support locally and globally has amazed Church.“It’s really important to reach

out as human beings,” Church said. “It doesn’t matter what race you are, you can feel it, you have the urge in your mind to just help.”St. Lucie West resident Teri Pin-

ney said her heart aches for her father’s homeland.“I’m overwhelmed with pity and

sorrow for the suffering going on over there,” Pinney said in an email from Germany, where she was visiting.Pinney praised the work of

McGinnis, saying the devastated country still needs more help.“Thanks to the leadership of

Daisy McGinnis, president of the Philippine-American Association of the Treasure Coast, our com-munity has rallied together to help,” Pinney said. “Goods and materials for the Red Cross in the Philippines is good, but I also appeal people to donate cash to UNICEF, Doctors Without Bor-ders or the Catholic Diocese of the Philippines.”

HCG has not been demonstrated to be effective adjunctive therapy in the treatment of obesity. There is substantial evidence that it increases weight loss beyond that resulting from caloric restriction, that it causes a more attractive or “normal” distribution of fat, or that it decreases the hunger and discomfort associated with calorie-restricted diets.

St. Lucie Battery & Tire wins award ST. LUCIE COUNTY — Tire

Business Magazine, the United States foremost industry re-source data house has released its top retail dealership rankings for 2013 (as of Sept 2013). St Lucie & Battery & Tire of

Fort Pierce has made the top 100 list in the category of “Largest In-dependent US Retailers” recently released by TBM data source. The dealership grew to 12 stores with the opening of three new loca-tions in the past year which tied them for a “not too shabby” 73rd place nationwide. Serving the Treasure Coast for

more than 40 years, the company has gained regional market share selling more than 8,000 tires per month, and performing over 2,000 oil changes monthly. The company now operates service

centers in St Lucie, Okeechobee, Martin, Indian River and Palm Beach counties. Eleven of their locations provide full-service maintenance and repair of pas-senger vehicles and light duty trucks by offering everything from tune-ups to oil changes, alignments to a/c service. Ad-ditionally, five of their locations provide commercial truck, fleet & RV service, as well as mammoth tractor tires to the agricultural industry. “Our philosophy has remained

the same since our humble beginnings in Fort Pierce.” said founder Joey Miller. “We provide honest and reliable service to everyone who walks through our doors.” In early 2013 the company

opened new locations in Jensen Beach, St. Lucie West and West

Public comment PALM CITY — It really seems

like hardly a Martin County Com-mission meeting goes by without a word from Donna Melzer. The former commissioner avidly at-tends the meetings, and regularly speaks during public-comment times. Folks like that get different

descriptions put on them. “Advo-cate.” “Concerned citizen.” “Sixth commissioner.” “Gadfly.” Melzer’s take on Melzer? She thinks of herself as an educator. “My goal is to have residents ed-

ucated to make good decisions,” she said. The 66-year-old is the chair-

woman of the Martin County Conservation Alliance, a group that advocates for keeping the county’s Comprehensive Growth Management Plan strong against haphazard development. Pro-posed and made changes to the 1982 document are almost always prickly affairs that come with threats of lawsuits. More than half of Martin’s

102,000 voters are Republican; all five commission members are. So’s Melzer for that matter. That party unanimity would seem to make for a quiet commission. Seem. Martin’s political factions are basically two camps that can largely be divided by that one document: the comp plan. “I think there’re two ways to

grow,” Melzer said. “One is very recklessly, like Port St. Lucie. The other is responsibly.” Then there are folks like Com-

missioner Doug Smith, Jensen Beach. He said terms like “slow growth” are often cover words for “no growth.” “It, from my perspective, is al-

ways very much against the busi-ness community,” Smith said.Nonetheless, when Melzer

speaks at commission meetings, Smith, like other commissioners, visibly listens. The commission made soften-

ing changes to the comp plan in 2009. Three of the commissioners lost subsequent election bids. Melzer is certain that the two are directly related. Restoring the comp plan was Melzer’s and oth-ers’ hue and cry during the 2010 and 2012 elections.

“We think the new commission

is a result of our efforts,” Melzer said. Smith, by the way, kept his seat

in the 2012 elections and is often the lone dissenter in votes these days as the commission has been making additional changes that largely undo the previous ones. Melzer’s political activism

Rolling to workBrad Highwood rolls to work,

then rolls at work. He uses a wheelchair to get around. The 52-year-old works as a ca-

shier at the Gulfstream Goodwill Industries’ Palm City store. High-wood is one of about 42,000 vet-erans diagnosed with spinal-cord injuries or diseases. It was a downward employment

step for Highwood, but he’s lucky to have a job at all. The Para-lyzed Veterans of America, PVA, estimates that unemployment among veterans with catastrophic disabilities who can and want to work is 65 to 85 percent. The De-partment of Veterans Affairs de-fines “catastrophic disability” as having an injury or disease that requires personal or mechanical assistance to leave home, such as

using a wheelchair. Highwood said he sought a job

for a long time before landing one. “It took about four years,” he

said. “I’ve got a lot of manage-ment experience. We put in (re-sumes) everywhere, and nobody was interested.” Among other programs and of-

ferings, Gulfstream Goodwill has employment programs for people with disabilities. The stores are, by far, the charity’s largest fund-raiser. In 2012 the local Goodwill made almost $30 million from its 24 stores. Gulfstream is in Martin, St. Luc-

ie, Indian River, Palm Beach and Okeechobee counties. During the National Veterans

Wheelchair Games, July, the PVA opened its seventh Paving Access for Veterans Employment

Indian River State College introduces elementary education bachelor’s degree

For the first time, Treasure Coast residents can complete all the courses they need to become an elementary school teacher within easy driving distance. Reg-istration is now under way, with classes beginning Jan. 8.The IRSC program was launched

in response to the strong demand for elementary school teachers in the region. Based on labor market data and a survey of local schools, between 100 to 200 job openings are projected annu-ally in the four counties served by IRSC. Stressing the need for more teachers, the School Dis-tricts of St. Lucie, Martin, Indian

River and Okeechobee counties submitted letters to the Florida Department of Education indicat-ing their support of a bachelor’s degree in elementary education at IRSC. “Busy Treasure Coast residents

juggling work and family respon-sibilities can now achieve their dream of becoming an elementa-ry school teacher without leaving the area to complete their edu-cation,” said Dr. Ian Neuhard, director of IRSC Baccalaureate Programs. “IRSC combines this convenience with many opportu-nities to develop teaching skills right in local schools.”

— Operation PAVE — regional office. It’s in Tampa, where the games were. Sherman Gillums Jr., associate executive director of veterans benefits, said rehabil-itation for those with catastrophic injuries or diseases has routine deficiencies that contribute to high unemployment among peo-ple with disabilities. “When you go through a course

of rehabilitation, the end goal is not employment,” he said. “It is about going home.” He added, “Paralyzed Veterans

of America looks at employment as a goal for all veterans with disabilities.” Highwood was diagnosed with

transverse myelitis in 2000. Those with the spinal-cord dis-ease often must use wheelchairs, but not always. It’s possible his time in the 1970s as a scout sniper with the 101st Airborne contributed to the extent of the condition.

“I’ve got several herniated disks,” Highwood said. According to VA figures, about

16 percent of people with spi-nal-cord injuries and diseases are veterans. Veterans make up about 7 percent of the popula-tion. Because of that unusually high rate of spinal-cord problems among veterans, some spi-nal-cord diseases such as multi-ple sclerosis are presumptive ser-vice-related conditions. That is if a veteran shows symptoms of MS while in or within a certain period of time after discharging from the military, the VA presumes it’s due to service. Amyotrophic lat-eral sclerosis, ALS, is always pre-sumed to be a service-connected condition for any veteran with 90 days or more in the military. Highwood was managing a

plumbing company when trans-verse myelitis struck him. His employer was accommodating, so Highwood continued working for

started almost by accident. In the 1990s, she was a PTA mom asked to be on a committee look-ing at places to build an elemen-tary school. She said Palm City seemed to be the place for a new school. Palm City Elementary had more students than others in the county, and the student body was growing faster. Bessey Creek and Citrus Grove didn’t exist yet. But the school district kept lean-

ing toward building a school in Hobe Sound. The former schoolteacher talked

to Maggy Hurchalla — one of the comp plan’s chief architects — about the perplexing lean toward building in Hobe Sound rath-er than Palm City. She left the meeting certain land developers were playing a large, behind-the-scenes role in that. Hurchalla put a question to Melzer. “She said, ‘Have you ever

thought of running for the com-mission?’” Melzer said. That’s exactly what Melzer did in

1996, and won. She was beat in a 2000 reelection bid. That hasn’t stopped her from keeping a hand in commission business. Espe-cially when the comp plan is the business of the day. “If we lose our comp plan, the

direction we go will be more like

our neighboring counties to the south and to the north,” Melzer said. Melzer started life on a farm. It’s

still in her family. David, her hus-band, and she headed to Florida from Illinois back in the ‘70s. Be-fore then, she’d been a teaching high-school math and biology, but got interested in another pro-fession. She went to night school and picked up a law degree. That, she said, has come in handy for reading and explaining the comp plan. But, she didn’t go to law school to be a political activist. “I was not the rebel rouser,” she

said. “I used to be told a lot that I was nice.”When the couple had two chil-

dren, Melzer dedicated her time to raising them. Her son is living in Illinois back on that family farm. Her daughter lives in Tam-pa. Melzer said her activism is urged

by a firm belief in democracy. It’s also urged by a firm belief that most Martin County residents want strong protections from overdevelopment. She said if that ever changes, she’ll happily spend her days doing something other than going to Martin Coun-ty Commission meetings. “The day the majority of Martin

County want to be like Broward, I’ll shut up,” she said.

a couple years after the diagno-sis. But Highwood started los-ing his ability to hear telephone

conversations — a necessity for that job. “I dropped out, because of the

hearing,” he said. What Highwood hoped to find

was management work that

didn’t require much telephone time. He got help with the job hunting from the Florida Divi-sion of Vocational Rehabilitation.

Army veteran Brad Highwood sought a job for four years before getting one at Gulfstream Goodwill Industries’ Palm City store. Despite extensive experience in man-agement, Highwood was unable to find an employer willing to hire him. He’s a wheel-chair user because of transverse myelitis. Additionally, he has advanced hearing loss that affects his ability to hear over telephones, which caused him to lose work managing a plumbing company. The Paralyzed Veterans of America estimates that 65 to 85 percent of vet-erans with catastrophic disabilities who’d like and are able to work can’t find jobs.

He was startled by employers’ responses, or lack of them. “I was a manager at Sam’s

Club,” he said. “I ran a large plumbing company.” Gillums, who is a wheelchair

user due to a spinal-cord injury, said the PVA has heard many similar stories from veterans with disabilities. The organiza-tion was one of the leading pro-ponents for the Americans with Disabilities Act, which requires employers to consider applicants with disabilities if those disabil-ities don’t affect their abilities to do core functions of jobs they ap-ply for. Gillums said many com-panies are eager to comply with the law, and to support veterans with disabilities, but often don’t know how to go about it. “We reach out to employers

who express an interest in hiring veterans with disabilities, but have no idea how to get started,” he said. Gillums said about 600 employ-

ers have joined the Operation PAVE network. Some are small employers with a few positions. Others are multinational com-panies. He said Operation PAVE goes beyond helping wheel-chair-using veterans. “We serve any veteran with a

severe obstacle to employment,” he said. Severe obstacles include serious

post-traumatic stress disorder, felony convictions, and disabil-ities such as hearing or vision loss, Gillums said. Additionally, he said Operation PAVE helps caregivers to veterans with cata-strophic disabilities find employ-ment.Highwood started working at

Goodwill in January. He helped open the Palm City store. He said it’s important for veterans and others with disabilities to seek and have the chance for employ-ment. “You can sit and dwell on what

you used to be able to do, or focus on what you can still do,” he said. Employers and job seekers

who want to find out more about Operation PAVE can visit op-erationpave.org, or call Shelly Edwards, employment network coordinator, at (570) 789-7283. The Palm City Goodwill store

Gift of entertainment always welcome

STUART — One of the best hol-iday gifts is the gift of live enter-tainment. You don’t have to worry about size or color and tickets can usually be purchased online in a matter of minutes. For events taking place after the New Year, it is a gift that the recipient can look forward to. One of the nice things about many of the events listed is that the prices are far be-low what you’d pay in big cities.January at the Lyric Theatre has

something for everyone on your list. Pianist Francesco Attesti opens the year Jan. 5, but there is also Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis Jan. 7; the lively Dance Your Pants Off Jan. 8; Earl Turner Jan 13; The Machine Performs the music of Pink Floyd Jan. 15; The Best of Broadway, featuring the music of Andrew Lloyd Webber Jan. 16-17; Nina Kotova and Angel Romero Jan. 18; Gaelic Storm Jan. 22; the Glenn Miller orchestra Jan 23; “A New York State of Mind: The Music of Billy Joel,” Jan. 24; the John Pizzareli Quartet Jan 25; the Capitol Steps Jan 27; An Acoustic Evening with Keb’ Mo’ Jan 28, and Mel Tillis Jan. 31.It’s a great schedule and the

problem will be trying to decide what to see. The Barn Theatre will present

“Squabbles” from Jan. 24-Feb. 9. The comedy, by Marshall Karp, tells the story of what happens when a couple has his widowed father and her separated mother each move in with them. There’s also a baby on the way, so there

Join in for the Silver Bells Holiday Home Tour to help Mustard Seed

“Silver Bells! Silver Bells!” That’s the theme behind Mustard Seed’s Silver Bells Holiday Home Tour, our second annual holiday gathering. We are celebrating this holiday in style, with a little help from some very kind friends who have sponsored and opened up their homes for this wonder-ful event. Here is what we have planned and how you can help:On Saturday, Dec. 7, 100 peo-

ple will be parking their cars and boarding a motor coach deco-rated with twinkling lights and sounds of the holidays. They will be treated to a brief ride to their first destination; a lovely exclu-sive home where they will embark on a special holiday home tour. Throughout the event at each

home, guests will enjoy heavy hors d’oeuvres and glorious desserts. Guests will have the opportunity to participate in both a LIVE and silent auction, where items increase in value at each destination. It is sure to be a magical eve-

ning in many ways; by being a guest on the tour or by becoming a sponsor who donates an item your participation in the Silver Bells Holiday Home Tour will help Mustard Seed Ministries raise money to continue helping fill the needs of thousands of individuals and families in crisis.Mustard Seed Ministries would

be delighted if you would help us make this event special, unique, and completely unforgetta-ble. Would you please consider helping us celebrate our second annual Silver Bells Holiday Home Tour the event of the season?Filled with holiday cheer, we are,The Mustard Seed Auxiliary.

High school chorus gives holiday concert

STUART — OPUS, the high-ly regarded choral group from Martin County High School, has been winning accolades for many years. During the spring 2012 Heri-

tage Festival in Los Angeles, the OPUS Combined Chorus and Men’s Choir received First Place Gold awards. The Women’s Choir received First Place Gold and the prestigious Sweepstakes Award, Brianna Scully and Tavarius Harris received awards from solo performance and Ronald Corbin, the OPUS director, received an award for conducting during the event. This past spring, OPUS had the opportunity to travel to Paris to perform. In order to travel to the com-

petitions, OPUS performs an annual Holiday Concert and fundraiser. This year’s event, on Dec. 11, at the Yarboro Perform-ing Arts Center at Martin County High School, will raise money to enable OPUS members to travel to New York City in March 2015 to take part in the WorldStrides Heritage Music Festival Compe-tition. OPUS was formed more than 30

years ago by Ronald Corbin. The music educator earned a Bach-elor of Science degree at Florida A & M and taught at Bethune Cookman College before leading choruses in Bartow and Milwau-kee. Corbin said that the students

will perform holiday favorites as a group and as soloists. At press time, the soloists had not been determined, as they must au-

dition for the roles. This is their first major performance of the school year. Corbin said that the trip to Par-

is was a highpoint for himself and his students. “We were there for almost a

week,” he said. “It was a wonder-ful experience. There’s so much to see. It was my first time there and I want to go back by myself.” This year, OPUS students will

also perform at St. Bernadette Church in St. Lucie West as part of the concert series there. This is a return engagement. Tom Bold, who is the director of the series, said that the students performed at the church just before they left for Paris and were such a hit that they were asked to perform this year as a featured part of the series. For Ronald Corbin, who has

been guiding the young singers for a long time, there is only one goal. “I make sure they make good

music,” he said. The Annual OPUS and Com-

bined Choir Holiday Concert will be held Dec. 11 at 7 p.m. at the Wanda Yarboro Performing Arts Center at Martin County High

School, 2801 S. Kanner Highway, Stuart. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased from choral stu-dents or by calling Tina Bartolotta at (772) 248-2139 or by email at [email protected]. There is general admission seating and refreshments will be served by the OPUS Boosters. During the inter-mission, there will be an auction for a live OPUS concert to be per-formed at a private home, event or business. OPUS will perform Dec. 15 at

St. Bernadette Church, 350 N.W. California Blvd.., Port St. Lucie. It is part of a trio of shows that also features the Lincoln Park Acade-my Wind Orchestra Dec. 13 and the Treasure Coast Symphony Dec. 16. A ticket to the OPUS con-cert is $20 and entitles entry to all three concerts. For more information, call (772)

Ringing and swinging our way through

the holidays I can’t imagine

a holiday without music, can you? Whether it’s car-oling in the ‘hood, singing around the piano at family gatherings, dancing at holiday parties, or just enjoying the music of the season playing all around us everywhere we go, the fact of the matter is, the holiday just wouldn’t be the same without the opportunity to express our emotions musically. This year, the stockings hung by the chimney (or patio) with care are absolutely jammed with great music courtesy of the incredibly talented musicians who share their time and talent with the Treasure Coast. We just finished the first of four

fabulous new Jazz Jams in Vero Beach at the Heritage Center with our Dancin’ Shoes Jazz Jam, and what a fun time it was for all. We’ll be back there on the first Thursday of January, February, and March, so grab some friends and make a road trip for some seriously great music and a load of laughter and fun. This weekend the Fort Pierce

Jazz Ensemble will be swinging at the gazebo by the water in historic downtown Fort Pierce, as we celebrate the season and help put you in the holiday mood at the Jazz Market. You’re already there picking up fresh fruits and veggies, so why not skip the mall this weekend, and find some unique treasures from the arti-

sans who display their wares at the Jazz Market every

Saturday morning. If you really want to kick your

holiday into high gear, plan on coming out Wednesday, Dec. 18 to Endless Summer Winery, just a mile down the road from Mead-owood (formerly Panther Woods) for our second Holiday Fling and a Ring-A-Ding-Ding, featuring Big Band Swing. There will be music, dancing, boutique wines, Florida beers, delicious food, and music, music, music. The whole evening is just $17, which helps Fort Pierce Jazz & Blues Society con-tinue to provide scholarships for talented, local youth who want to pursue a career in music. Even through the hectic month

of December, we’ll still be do-ing Tuesday Jazz Jams at the Black Box Theatre in Fort Pierce, Wednesday Jazz Jams every other Wednesday at Port St. Lucie Botanical Gardens (Dec. 11), Jazz Jams Deux on Dec. 4 and 18 at Tutto Fresco (and if you haven’t

for, and then abandoned at 10 months old. Now he’s get-ting excellent care at the HSTC, which he truly deserves. Duke wears his heart on his nose. Look closely - see the pink heart? When you look into Duke’s eyes and see his inner soul – there is a happy, loving and 60 lb. gentle Pit Bull Terrier mix waiting to come out and play. He needs that special person who will nurture him with love, kindness and patience to show him how to trust again. In time, Duke will become the loyal friend you’re looking to have in your life.

All senior pets 7 years and older are ½ price to ANYONE looking to adopt him/her. Any Senior (62 and older) will have an adoption fee waived only if the pet is

ing specialty clothing, dining on as-sorted gourmet foods provided by eight different chefs and picking up early shopping ideas from over 40 unique vendors.

The 18th Annual Holiday Trade Show was made possible by our

major sponsors:Bluewater Editions; Villar Plas-tic Surgery; Forward Electric & Air Conditioning; Silver Plat-ter Catering; the Kane Center; Scripps/TC Palm; Your Voice and the Stuart/ Martin County Chamber of Commerce.

Shop local and buy from a chamber member was the theme of the eve-ning, as our valued members were able to feature their wares and re-mind folks that their gift needs can be met, right here in Martin County. Happy Holidays to all and to all a good night!

Dr. Luis Villar, Villar Plastic Surgery (center), co-sponsor of the Chamber’s Holiday Trade Show Business After Hours was lucky enough to win a beau-tiful painting donated by fellow sponsor Jason Leonard, Blue Water Graphics.

Holiday Trade Show sponsor Vicki Carson and her daughter Gina Golino, Forward Electric & Air Conditioning, visited with Chamber members and guests during the special event which took place on Novem-ber 13th at the Kane Center.

Chamber Vice-Chairman/Chair Elect Pete Lashenka, shows off his loyalty to his employer, Seacoast National Bank, sponsor of Operation Thank You by displaying his Seacoast-blue socks at the Breakfast held on No-vember 5th.
