The Omaha Homeschool Learning Center

--provides weekly classes to supplement your home curriculum.

--brings classes that you already attend into one place to reduce travel time.

--has activities and classes for the entire family (ages 3 to adult).

--creates a community of learners and homeschool moms.

We are located at the Southwest Church of Christ (124th and West Center). Classes are held from 9am to 4pm on Wednesdays, and we welcome you to bring the whole family down. Whether spending time in our Mom’s Room or finding a nook to call your own, you are welcome to make us your homeschool away from home. Kids are free to study or socialize when not in class.

ClassesClasses meet on Wednesdays, beginning on February 5th and ending April 22nd. The 14-week classes will end on May 6th. (There is no Easter break.) Most classes are 50 minutes long.

Tuition is typically $95 for a semester class; there may also be an additional charge for supply fees or textbooks. Tuition is higher for classes that meet for extended time. Volunteers receive discounted tuition.

Parents’ Role Our mission is to help you enjoy, enrich, prepare, and protect your children. These supplemental classes are meant to assist your homeschooling efforts, but we always want to affirm parents as their child’s primary educator. Please be informed about your children’s classes: ask questions, talk to teachers, and sit in on classes.

We hope moms can stay at the Center while their kids are in class so that they can find some time to rest and enjoy themselves among other like-minded homeschool moms. But this is only a suggestion: you know best what you need to do, and you are welcome to drop your children off.

PoliciesCODE OF CONDUCT: Parents must complete an online form to acknowledge that they and their children understand the Learning Center’s code of conduct.

SUPERVISION: Please be aware that the Learning Center is only responsible for the safety of children in the classroom; parents or the children themselves are responsible at all other times. Classes may end before the scheduled time on occasion. Please instruct your children to remain in the classroom if you would like to pick them up. (Children under the age of 6 will be kept in the classroom until someone arrives to pick up the child.)

ILLNESS: Although any public area increases exposure to germs, we ask that contagious children not attend classes. Colds are unavoidable, but children with a fever, severe cough, or any infectious disease should remain at home. A child with flu-like illness (fever and a cough) should stay home from class for at least 24 hours after they no longer have a fever, without the use of fever-reducing medicine.

INCLEMENT WEATHER: An email will be sent out by 8am if classes are cancelled.

Payment 1. A non-refundable, non-transferable deposit must be made at the time of registration. This amount will be applied to the cost of the class.

2. Supply fees are also non-refundable.

3. Full payment for classes can be made at registration or installments may be paid in installments, which will be charged to the payment method entered at the time of registration.

4. The first installment will be assessed on March 10th; the second and last installment on April 24th. You can also pay by cash or check in person on any Wednesday if you prefer.

5. Adjustments made to registered classes (including class exchanges) will incur the loss of deposit.

VolunteersVolunteers receive discounted tuition (10% off), priority registration, and a scholarship applied as credit. The volunteer scholarship is $45 per semester for each class that they assist; housekeeping before and after classes receives a $55 credit. (For example, if someone helped in two classes and helped clean up, they would receive a $145 credit: 45+45+55.)

We have positions open for teacher assistants, set-up, clean-up, hall monitors, and babysitting. If you have younger children with you, we may still be able to use your assistance; simply indicate this on the registration form. Responsible students 14 years and older may also volunteer. We can use kids 12 years and older for set-up (8:15 am) and clean-up (4pm) so long as they are able to help move chairs and tables.

Volunteers are eligible for priority registration from December 2nd through 8th.

Belief Statement The Omaha Homeschool Learning Center is an ecumenical Catholic ministry, whose values should be respected but need not be shared. Our classes are open to all homeschoolers, regardless of religious orientation, but parents should be aware that classes may be taught from a Christian perspective. It is our firm belief that God is eager to see Christian brothers and sisters join together to celebrate all that they hold in common. Jesus prayed that all of His followers “may be one, Father…so that the world may believe that You have sent Me” (John 17:20). John Paul II has written, “Indeed all the faithful are asked by the Spirit of God to do everything possible to strengthen the bonds of communion between all Christians and to increase cooperation between Christ's

followers” (That They May Be One, 101). There are countless benefits for this unity, but surely the greatest is to proclaim in unison to an unbelieving world that Jesus is Lord!

Class Descriptions

Most classes are 50 minutes long and have additional charges for supply fees. Tuition covers the entire semester. Supplies and books should be purchased by students prior to class. Please ask for guidance if your child is outside of listed age range. Most classes will not accept older or younger students.

Act It Out! (ages 3-5) New class! Sandy Lee and Susan Dolezal

Stories come alive through the reenactment of children’s favorite books. Has your child ever crawled inside a 6-foot mitten? Become baby bear that came upon Goldilocks? Or sold caps to only have monkeys take them? Your child can experience all of these things and much more while using different techniques to act out stories. By telling stories, children are able to learn new vocabulary, sequencing, taking on another person’s view, and developing language skills to encourage reading.

ACT Prep (ages 13-18) Repeats first semester’s curriculum Kevin Burge

Students learn tips, strategies, and plenty of essential English, math, reading, and science review. Math will receive particular emphasis. Students will gain a competitive advantage by becoming familiar with the test’s format; learn tips that will turn complex algebra problems into simple arithmetic, and ease reading comprehension and science reasoning problems by zeroing in on main ideas, topic sentences, and key words. Homework: 1-2 hours per week.

Animal Attack (ages 6-10) Repeats first semester’s curriculum Maureen Armendariz

Animals are amazing! In this activity-based class – part art, part science – we’ll examine a variety of animals and their artifacts, such as hides, horse hair, quills, and a shark jaw. Birds, sea turtles, buffalo, and sharks are only a few of the many animals that we’ll discuss each week before turning our attention to an animal-themed art project that celebrates these incredible creatures.

Animal Farm (ages 6-11) Jessica Donahoo

Get up close and personal with live animals, such as a pig, cow, horse, chickens, rabbits, turkey, goats, or ducks. We will talk about the different kinds of animals, their uses, diet, and care. For the most part, this class will take place outdoors.

Note: Children with allergies to animals should not enroll.

Art (ages 6-11) New classes!

10am and 1pm: Amy Payson

Students will learn a wide variety of techniques (sketching, shading, color blending, transferring, and gridding) and mediums (pencil, ink, charcoal, oil pastels, chalk, and watercolor) to broaden their art repertoire. The class will emphasize free expression as well as looking to the masters.

Supplies provided by family: a basic sketch book, 5x7 or larger; a smock (or old t-shirt)

12pm: Jordan Shely

Create art at the feet of the Masters! Students will be introduced to a variety of captivating art movements and then craft works that reflect the themes and styles. They will work with different art mediums (watercolor, acrylic paint, charcoal, pastels, watercolor pencils, etc.) to explore the many facets of art. Students should bring a smock (or old t-shirt).

Advanced Drawing (ages 12 to adult) New projects! Jordan Shely

Students sharpen their drawing skills and build new techniques to improve their abilities using several different drawing mediums and a variety of subjects. Students will be given the opportunity to do at-home weekly assignments to keep them engaged with drawing the world around them throughout the week.

Art Workshop (ages 12-adult) New projects! Amy Payson

Students will take basic art skills to the next level, practicing different techniques (sketching, shading, color blending, transferring, and painting) and different mediums (pencil, ink, charcoal, oil pastels, chalk, and watercolor). We will look to the classical masters of the past and using them as a template for copywork as well as looking to the glory of God’s creation in nature. Students should bring a smock (or old t-shirt).


Pre-Ballet (ages 4-6 year-old boys and girls) Andrea Ford

This class will work on various skills including, movement, rhythm work, creativity exercises, and large motor skills. Students will participate in a basic warm up and be introduced to beginning ballet movements in a creative, fun learning environment. Girls should wear their hair in a bun or ponytail and off their neck if possible.

Girls: tights, ballet shoes, and a leotard. Boys: t-shirt, basketball shorts and ballet shoes.

Ballet (ages 7-14 year-old boys and girls) Andrea Ford

This is a classic ballet class that will include ballet technique, stretching, center floor work, and a short routine worked on every week. Students will be taught ballet vocabulary and will be engaged in a creative and interactive learning environment. Girls should wear their hair in a bun or ponytail and off their neck if possible.

Ballroom Dance (13-18 only, please) Nate Woodhams

Is it exercise or socializing? Are students learning dexterity or etiquette? Once the music starts, it all comes together in this lively, energizing class. Students will learn to dance East Coast swing, waltz, foxtrot, and tango (American style).

Basketball Skills and Drills (8-14) Rachelle Swanson

Learn or improve your game with games and drills led by experienced players and coaches. Prepare to have fun, make some friends, and improve your athletic ability! We welcome any level of experience, from beginners and beyond. And no homework!

Biology (ages 13-18) The second semester of a year-long class. Jeanne Patton

This Apologia college-preparatory biology course provides a detailed introduction to the methods and concepts of general biology. Heavily emphasizing the vocabulary of biology, it provides a strong background in the scientific method, the five-kingdom classification scheme, biochemistry, cellular biology, molecular and Mendelian genetics, and ecosystems. Includes labs. Homework: 3-6 hours per week.

Time: 9am-10:50am, ending 5/6

Tuition: $210 for 2 hours, 14 weeks/ $190 for volunteers (per semester)

Chemistry (ages 15-18) The second semester of a year-long class. Kevin Burge

A mathematics-intensive high school course that gives students a rigorous foundation in chemistry. Over the year, material will include such topics as kinetics, acids and bases, solutions, atomic structure, and gas. Students who take this course should be well prepared for a challenging university-level chemistry course. Includes labs. Prerequisite: Algebra I. Homework: 2-4 hours per week.

Chess (ages 7-13) Bob Woodworth

Learn the basic rules of chess, including pieces movements and values, plus strategy tips and some simple checkmates and stalemate tactics. The class will also include a brief history of the game, Best of all, students play, play, play!

Choir (ages 9 and up) New songs! Lori Needham

Let’s make some music together! Students will learn the basics of choral singing and grow their musical skills. This class will include the study of healthy vocal and breathing techniques, as well as solfeggio, and the fundamental skills of music. At the end of the semester, students will perform a recital of their repertoire.


Clay Cabaret New class! Abi Henke

Experience sculpture using a variety of materials and techniques. Students will learn basic clay, pottery, and sculpture concepts using different tools and hand-building techniques while creating multiple projects throughout the semester. Materials will include kiln-fired stoneware clay, air-dry clay, modeling clay, and more.

College Prep Reading and Writing (ages 14-18) New material Jack Donnelly

Many college courses require students to read supplemental excerpts and make some kind of written response, a skill that is not practiced frequently enough during high school. In this class, students will read non-fiction excerpts and respond by summarizing, analyzing, or creating reader reaction pieces. This course will emphasize skills such as paraphrasing without plagiarizing, expressing main ideas, providing telling details, connecting personally with the text, and formatting.

Cook ’N Book (ages 4-6) New class! Sandy Lee and Susan Dolezal

If a little red hen made bread, why can’t your child? Making stone soup is easy when everyone shares! Pigs can make pancakes, so why can’t kids? Children love to help adults cook in the kitchen; in this class we will build on their interest to promote literature and reading. Each week children will engage in a different cooking experience based on fun children’s books.

NOTE: Students with food allergies should not enroll unless they are capable of managing their dietary restrictions.

Creative Writing: Fiction (ages 13-18) New class! Katie Kohrs

Aspiring writers, we know you are out there, with half a dozen novels started and ideas for a hundred more. There are others like you: join them and improve your work with expert advice on clarity, description, character, setting, and plot construction. Best of all, you get to write fiction and share your work! Miss Kohrs, a Learning Center alumnus, just received her Master's Degree in Creative Writing (emphasis fiction) from the University of Roehampton in London.

Drama (ages 6-10) Open to current and new students Marianne Toovey

Inspire budding young actors through creative play, exercise, scene work and monologues. Students will learn the basics of taking direction, blocking, memorization, and feeling comfortable and confident in front of others to prepare them for the world of theatre. There will be a performance for parents on the last day.


Drama: One Acts (ages 14-18) New class! Jessie Simmons

This class will focus on producing a matinee performance of one-act plays. Every student will take a turn as an actor, director, and backstage ninja, learning how to audition, rehearse, and perform. In this introduction to theater basics, we will play games, read and choose scripts, create characters, and have a blast! No audition is required to participate. Performances will be held on the final class.

Engineering New content and old favorites Kevin Burge

Learn more about engineering through fun and challenging activities. Engineering applies science and mathematics to design objects or processes that are useful. Since machines and processes must obey the laws of nature, engineers must understand and use these laws. Students will engage in problem-solving strategies that will challenge and fascinate them, while revealing engineering facts and concepts. Mr. Burge will have new content as well as reprising some student favorites.

Students will investigate leads and “crime-scene” evidence, learn about fingerprinting, blood typing, blood spatter, basic criminology, interrogation tactics, pathology, DNA evidence and trace evidence through both lectures and hands-on labs.

Fun with Spanish (ages 6-10) Repeats previous curriculum Zaida Murray

Students become accustomed to the sounds and explore Spanish through a variety of games and activities focused on understanding and speaking skills. They will cover such topics as colors, numbers, days of the week, months of the year, seasons, food, family, animals, home and basic introductions to new friends. Prerequisite: students need to be able to read.


General Science (ages 11-16) The second semester of a year-long class. Erin Healey

Designed to be a student's first systematic introduction to the sciences, students explore topics such as the scientific method, simple machines, geology, archaeology, biology, anatomy and other disciplines, providing a wide range of scientific exposure. Experiments and demonstrations are included throughout, giving students practical experience as they discover the principles behind the science. Focus is placed on developing habits that will carry over into high school science, such as notetaking, quizzes, and tests. Homework: 1-3 hours per week.

Geography: Passport to the World (ages 10-14) New class! Dawn Andersen

Pack your bags! Students will be issued a passport to experience a wondrous global journey, encountering places and people from around the world. Children will learn intriguing facts about countries, including such information as capital cities, maps, flags, and religions. In addition, students can sample the local cuisine and hear from guest speakers who have been on location! Students will be encouraged to research a country and memorize geography facts and terms. Our semester will end with a trip to an African jungle and grasslands, the Asian highlands, a desert, a swamp, a gorilla valley, and other Henry Doorly exhibits.

High School Geography (ages 14-18) The second semester of a year-long class Julie Knutson

This course will study where people, places, and things are located, and how they relate to each other. Explore and discover the processes that shape the earth, the relationships between people and environments, and the links between people and places. Students will see how a global perspective applies to them!

Go Kids Go! (ages 4-7) Erin Healey

For kids on the move! Exercise and games keep kids active while also teaching them about the muscles they are developing, as well as their cardiovascular system. Activities will develop their ability to respond to visual, auditory, and kinesthetic cues; balancing and coordination training will enhance agility. And it’s all fun!

Hammers and Nails New projects! Jessica Donahoo

Start your DIY life early! In this class, children learn math and use fine motor skills with traditional woodworking tools to improve manual dexterity and create simple handmade wood projects. We’ll get crafty with our hands and show the importance of math in action.

Hands-On Math (ages 4-6) Repeats previous curriculum Angie Schalbrack

What a great way to introduce young learners to the joy of math! The use of math manipulatives provides an opportunity to touch, feel, count, and sort to develop deep foundational learning, not just memorization. This is an especially helpful way to address the learning needs of visual, kinesthetic, and other hands-on learners. It’s both effective and fun! Students will be introduced to (or build upon their understanding of) skip counting, shapes, symmetry, patterns, graphing, fractions, addition, subtraction, and more.

Prerequisite: Students should be able to count from 1 to 10.

Hands-On Science: Lights! Electricity! Magnetism! New class! See the invisible forces at work in the universe! These forces have been at the heart of navigating the planet and the internet, as well as discovering bacteria and new planets. Join us as we explore this unseen world and learn more about how the universe moves. This class is a continuation of last semester’s Force and Motion class, but new students are welcome.

Hot Wired: Electricity for Kids (ages 10-14) Repeats previous curriculum Becky Furtado

Turn a toothbrush into a robot! That is only one sneaky way to help kids discover the principles of electricity through engaging, hands-on activities as they make brush bots, electromagnets, motors, and more. Kids will have fun creating these projects while learning about electric circuits, magnetic and electrical fields, and how energy is transferred to devices used in daily life.

Human Geography: Christian Persecution (ages 14-18) Marjie Davis

Christian worldwide persecution has reached “near genocide levels.” In this high school social studies class, this persecution will be explored through the lens of human and political geography. Students will research and report on countries to discover the social, religious, and political mechanisms that give rise to religious persecution, as well as its impact on national, community, family, and private life.

Kid Chef (ages 6-10) New class! Autumn Cox

This class will entice your kids by teaching them how to make their favorite requested meals (chicken nuggets, anyone?) and then slyly introduce new variations to delight and astonish their jaded palates. Students will get the chance to make pancakes, macaroni & cheese, chicken nuggets, and pizzas, just to name a few. Add in some variety with mix-ins, toppings, sauces, and voila: kid chef!

NOTE: It is the student’s responsibility to manage allergy situations in the classroom.


Leathercraft (ages 6-18) Previous students may choose new projects Ralph Terry

Students will be guided step-by-step through projects to learn the fundamental techniques of the art of leather stamping by a Tandy Leather staff member. Beginning students can choose from eight engaging projects including keychains, bracelets, and more. (May be used as a partial fulfillment of the Boy Scout Leatherwork Merit Badge.)

Take teaching out of the textbook and put it into the child’s hands! Your child’s dream of a room filled with Legos comes together with a parent’s vision of children happily learning technology and engineering in a tangible way. Master builders will improve their skills and learn coding, chain reactions, simple machines, and much more. We will use the Lego kits Chain Reactions and Crazy Contraptions.

Masterpiece (ages 4-6) New class! Jordan Shely

Get your littles interested and excited by learning the history of art, art movements, and great artist by imitating their syles in simple projects. Math Mysteries (ages 6-9) New class! Elizabeth Greer

Calling all math detectives: come put your addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division skills to work solving math mysteries! We will learn about different strategies in our problem-solving toolbox to tackle complex word problems as a team, as well as exploring multiple approaches to problems and learning how to explain and support our solutions. Homework: 30 minutes per week.


Microsoft Office (ages 13-adult) Repeats previous curriculum Kim Parsons

Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel skills are vital for college and in just about every profession. Students will learn to use Microsoft Word to create, edit, save, and print documents; format text and to use styles; add a header and footer to a document; add a graphic to a document; use the spelling and grammar checker; and functions such as cut, copy, find and replace. Power Point objectives include creating and manipulating simple slide shows with outlines and notes; creating slide presentations that include text, graphics, animation, and transitions; and designing layouts and templates. In Excel, students will learn to enter and edit data; format data and cells; construct formulas; and create and modify charts.

Students supply a laptop equipped with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.

Middle School Play (ages 11-14) Jessie Simmons

This fun, family-friendly play is aimed specifically for less experienced actors with the goal to teach all the skills necessary to perform on stage. It is a great opportunity for students to perform in a fun, encouraging environment. We will practice characterization, stage movement, projection, articulation, and team work. Auditions will be January 22nd. Performances will be at the end of April.

Young children will have the opportunity to learn many basic musical elements in this playful, interactive class, using developmentally appropriate music and movement activities. Students will learn the names of notes and rests and use this knowledge to play a variety of rhythm instruments. Kids will naturally pick up many musical elements while having fun moving to music and singing!

Mystery Writing (ages 8-12) New class! Elizabeth MacDonald

Students will create a detective character and write a short story each week that solves a mystery, creating a mystery series throughout the semester. Every class will introduce challenge vocabulary and a grammar lesson to be used in their gripping detective stories. Students can have help from home with their writing, as the most important thing is to get their ideas on paper.

Natural Disasters (ages 10-14) Sarah Winn

This class mixes geology and history, wrapped in shocking and fascinating human and geological drama. We will explore the events in Pompeii, the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, the Si Chuan Earthquake, and more. The class will have plenty of hands-on opportunities as we take a look inside a volcano and re-create the action of plate tectonics. Find out how an act of nature can impact human society with devastating results!

New Worlds (ages 6-10) New class! Sarah Winn

Get out your compass and let’s discover new lands! We will have fun re-living the adventures of the early explorers as we become a Viking with Leif Ericsson, sail around the world with Magellan, head to China with Marco Polo, discover the New World with Columbus, and more! Each lesson will be filled with hands- on activities.

Introduction to Oil Painting (ages 12 to adult) New class! Amy Payson

Students will learn the basics of beginning oil painting. The class will be broken down into four units, first covering basic techniques and mixing of colors and then applying that knowledge in three projects. Students will take a basic sketch, a photo, and a still life object and then practice re-creating these on canvas. The goal will be to become comfortable in manipulating oils, which are more fluid than other art mediums. Students should bring a smock (or old t-shirt).

PE Marty Boro

Students engage in aerobic exercise that helps teach coordination, team work, confidence and sportsmanship. While playing, kids will learn many skills that are more important than athleticism, including team work, compassion, playing by the rules, anger and pain management, social skills, and competitiveness.

Note: Age may be less important than a child’s size, athleticism, and competitiveness.

Percy Jackson and Mythmaking (ages 10-14) Kim Parsons

Enter the riveting mythological world of Percy Jackson. As students adventure through the Lightning Thief, they will learn about literary elements used, how the classical myths differ from those created by author Rick Riordan, as well as practicing their own creative writing. If you love fiction, writing, and mythology, then this class is for you!

Perfect Paragraphs (ages 7-10) New class! Elizabeth MacDonald

Once a child can write a sentence, it can become a challenge to develop a balanced, detailed, and well thought-out paragraph. Each week we will work on sentence structure and building a new paragraph together, including a grammar lesson, a handful of spelling words, and a new topic to complete at home. Students can have help writing and spelling, if needed.

Photography (ages 12-adult) Bobbi Jo Beaver

Learn how to see and create, using light as your tool. Students will use photography as a means to capture and create amazing images by learning how to visualize before ever clicking the button. Learn the foundations of photography and take pictures that demonstrate proficiency in composition, light, angle, focal point, etc. Basic camera features will also be discussed.

Physical Science (ages 12-18) The second semester of a year-long class. Becky Furtado

Get ready for high-school science with this Apologia-based survey of the physical world. This course covers a broad range of topics including earth science, weather, chemistry, and physics. Students participate in group discussions, games, and hands-on experiments. Focus is placed on developing habits that will carry over into high school science, including note-taking, quizzes, and tests. Homework: 1-3 hrs. per week.

Pre-Reading (ages 4-5) New letters! Heather Reid

Help get your child get ready to explore the amazing world of reading! We will introduce a letter theme each week; students will take part in learning activities such as show-and-tell with that letter, letter sound segmenting, rhyming, letter crafts,

prewriting fine motor activities, and reading aloud with narration for better “listening” fluency and vocabulary building. This class is designed for students who are not proficient in letter recognition. Time: 2pm Tuition: $95/$85 for volunteers Supply Fee: $10

Public Speaking (ages 13-18) New class! Julie Knutson

Speaking in public is an everyday occurrence. Whether it is a toast, presentation, interview, or introduction, everyone has the need to acquire the basics of public speaking. In this engaging class, students will learn how to clearly communicate in multiple areas, concentrating on offering a polished response no matter the occasion. Students will practice speech writing as well as giving a variety of speeches in a safe and encouraging environment.

The Shakespeare Play: As You Like It (ages 13-18 only, please) Jack and Holly Donnelly

Studying a role allows students to appreciate and comprehend Shakespeare’s work in a way that mere reading can never match. This class will train students to confidently deliver some of the most eloquent lines in the English language as they perform a shortened version of one of Shakespeare’s masterpieces. Students must be available for dress rehearsals and performances. Homework: memorize lines.

This is true hands-on learning! Students will learn the basics of American Sign Language (ASL) in this engaging class full of interactive games and activities. Lessons will include the alphabet, greetings, manners, colors, and more. Students will come away from this class on their path to bilingualism.


Spanish I (ages 14-adult) The second semester of a year-long class. Katie Kohrs

This class will increase vocabulary and knowledge of common conversation through the study of grammar, verb conjugation, and language usage. Through teacher-led instructions and interactive activities, role-plays, stories, and music, students will have opportunities to further their written and oral language skills. Homework: 3-5 hrs. per week.

Tae Kwon Do teaches self-confidence, self-discipline, courtesy, integrity, healthy lifestyle, weight control, obedience to parents, good reading, study habits, and self-defense. Take to the skies as you learn about the history of flight! For thousands of years, people have been fascinated with flying. The class will also include experiments about air flight, airplane design, and much more. From da Vinci's first drawings, to the Wright brothers at Kitty Hawk, to outer space, students will learn about aviation in a fun and engaging manner. The class supply fee includes the spectacular book Planes, A Complete History with fifty press-out models of historic and contemporary aircraft.

Toying with Physics (ages 6-10) New class! Tim Gilloon

Let’s create our own fun physics toys, play games, and learn how our universe works, based primarily on Isaac Newton’s three laws of motion. How does a tornado form? What is sound? Why do soap bubbles pop? Students will make and take home several fun science-based toys that will help explain the world around and within them!

Under the Sea New class! Becky Furtado

Come explore God’s creation in zoology while making your own creations! Students will study marine biology by investigating a variety of ocean creatures while creating enjoyable art projects that also help retain their learning. Have you ever noticed the beauty of the scutes on a sea turtle’s carapace or contemplated the colors of mollusk shells? We will look at these and more!

What’s Cookin’ (ages 10-18) New class! Trevor Ford

You’ve cooked the world; now come back to your own kitchen and get the skills and confidence to prepare and cook the everyday foods that are the stuff of life. Students will learn how to safely use a variety of knives and basic cooking equipment so that they can competently accomplish everything from frying an egg to making a full meal from scratch. Forget about showing your work: in this class you can eat it!

NOTE: It is the student’s responsibility to manage their allergies.

World War I (ages 13-18) New class! Kevin Burge

The European powers hadn't fought a major war since the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. What would happen one hundred years later when 18th century battle tactics met deadly 20th-century war technology in what would come to be called the Great War, the War to End All Wars.

Writing (ages 9-18) New class! Katie Kohrs

Students will study various types of paragraphs and essays, practicing such skills as topic sentences, supporting sentences, concluding sentences, thesis statements, topic selection, controlling ideas, unity and cohesion. Various exercises including sequencing, model writing, parts of speech, and peer evaluations will support the weekly assignments. Assignments will be customized to fit the needs and level of each student. Homework: 1-2 hours per week. Miss Kohrs, a Learning Center alumnus, just received her Master's Degree in Creative Writing (emphasis fiction) from the University of Roehampton in London.

The Writing Workshop (ages 9-18) New essays! Jack Donnelly

The Writing Workshop helps students acquire and improve skills to prepare them to write on the high school and college level. The class will include group interaction and teacher instruction on writing style and techniques, including grammar. Students will be given specific assignments in which they will apply the writing process to such genres as personal narrative, expository and fiction. The instruction and evaluation will be adapted to each student’s skill level. Homework: 1-2 hours per week.

Young Explorers (ages 3-5; must be potty trained) New themes! Heather Reid

Sing, dance, paint…play! Students enjoy lively activities, crafts, and story time, while developing fine motor skills, listening, and coordination through positive social interaction. This non-academic class emphasizes that play is the work of children and provides a wonderful opportunity for individual and social activities. Students may sign up for up to two hours; however, it is recommended that 3-year-olds and young 4-year-olds only take one hour for least for their first semester.

Young Scientists (ages 5-7) New activities! Maureen Armendariz

Make scientific concepts come alive with hands-on experiments and science-themed stories. We will get dirty and wet in the name of science! No reading or writing necessary, but students should come to class with willingness to adventure and work together in a group. With plenty of hands-on experiments, this class will take science to a whole new level.

CODE OF CONDUCT

Please help us be gracious and grateful guests of the Southwest Church of Christ.

1. All parents and students must be familiar with the Code of Conduct. Students will not be allowed to attend classes until their family has signed and submitted this Code of Conduct. (Electronic submission is acceptable.)

2. First violations of the Code of Conduct will result in an email, which must be replied to by the parent. Students will not be allowed to attend classes if no reply is received.

3. Second violations of the Code of Conduct will result in the student loss of privileges for two weeks. During that time, students will be assigned a designated seat for all times that the student is not in class. Parents will receive and must reply to an email. Students will not be allowed to attend classes if no reply is received.

4. Third violations of the Code of Conduct will result in

a) a parent-student conference at 9am or 3pm with a Learning Center administrator. No student will be admitted to class until they have attended this conference.

b) a $20 fee

c) student loss of privileges for four weeks. During that time, students will be assigned a designated seat for all times that the student is not in class.

5. Fourth violations of the Code of Conduct may result in suspension or expulsion. Tuition will not be refunded for class time that is missed due to disciplinary action.

Note: Violations that are deemed particularly grave may result in immediate suspension or expulsion.

Be aware that the Learning Center is only responsible for the safety of children in the classroom; parents or the children themselves are responsible at all other times. Classes may end before the scheduled time on occasion. Please instruct your children to remain in the classroom if you would like to pick them up.

1. My children and I will respect all people and property at the Learning Center.

--We will immediately report any spills, mars, or other damage done to the building.

--We will clean up after ourselves, picking up any trash, etc.

--We will not touch or use any church materials or displays.

--We understand that outdoor property must be respected as well: no climbing on trees or playing in bushes.

2. My children and I will avoid conversation in the lobby out of respect for church office workers. We understand that people seated in the lobby chairs should be silent. (Talking is allowed during the ten minutes of passing between classes.)

3. My children will not gather outside the pastor's office. (This is the sidewalk that leads to the door that opens on to the stairs for the second floor and lower lever. See facility map online for clarification.)

4. My children will not skip or be tardy for class without parent permission.

5. My children will avoid running, horseplay, or loud voices in the hallways.

6. My children and I will not have open drink containers outside of the Moms’ Room and understand that no red or orange drinks are allowed on the Learning Center premises, whether in closed containers or not.

7. My children will obey all adults and address them with respect. My children and I will respect other students (no name calling, taunting, etc.).

8. My children and I will follow the dress code.

--Leggings and tights are not considered pants; the garment worn on top needs to meet skirt and shorts requirements.

--Skirts should be no more than an inch or so above the knee, even if leggings, tights, or shorts are worn. Shorts (including athletic shorts) should at least come down just past the fingertips when arms are at the side, even if leggings or tights are worn.

--No tank tops, tube tops, halter tops, spandex, muscle shirts, bare backs, immodest necklines, etc.

--Midriff should not show when standing or sitting.

--Shoulder straps should be at least two fingers wide.

9. My children and I understand that students are not allowed to bring any kind of weapon into the Learning Center or on Learning Center grounds. Weapons are defined as any object or substance designed as a weapon or capable of threatening bodily harm, including, but not limited to all knives, nunchucks or throwing stars, bows and arrows, slingshots, razors, blackjacks, clubs, firearms (loaded or unloaded), objects designed to be worn over fists or knuckles, and explosive or incendiary devices or material.

10. My children will not engage in public displays of affection (hand-holding, hugging, arms draped over a shoulder, etc.) between boys and girls. My children understand that there is to be no unsupervised boy-girl alone time.

11. My children will not use profanity or vulgar language or gestures, or gambling.

12. My children and I will not engage in behavior or bring objects that may interfere with, disrupt, or prevent a normal learning environment in or outside of the classroom.

13. My children and I will not use or possess tobacco products including cigarettes, smokeless tobacco products (such as chewing tobacco), and e-cigarettes or vapes within the facilities or on or in view of the property of the Southwest Church at any time. Students are likewise forbidden to use these products off-campus if they are between classes or in the company of Learning Center students who are between classes. Violators will face expulsion.
