Your teacher will provide you with internet links that allow you to virtually explore the park.

Lesson 118 International Bridges

Bridges are built to pass over water. The Peace Bridge was built to cross over the Niagara River. The two sides of this bridge belong to two different countries. The United States is on one side, and Canada is the other. The Peace Bridge connects Buffalo, New York and Ontario, Canada. This bridge is nicknamed “The Queen City” bridge. Where the Peace Bridge touches Canada, there once was a military fort. Fort Erie is on the Canadian side of the bridge. Today, the fort is known as the Dolls’ House Museum. It was one of the stops on the Underground Railroad for the escaped slaves.

The Peace Bridge was built in 1927. It made of steel and is over one mile long. It costs

$3.00 to cross it. There are about four thousand trucks crossing it each day.

This connection of two countries also happens over the Detroit River. The Ambassador Bridge connects the two countries. One side is Detroit, Michigan and the other Windsor, Ontario. The Ambassador Bridge is a suspension bridge. It is one of the busiest international border crossings in the world. It is important for world economy because it is one of the ways we transport our products to other countries for trade.

The United States and Canada work together to have a safe passage from one country to another. Five people from the United States and five from Canada manage the Peace Bridge.

Lesson 119 Cultural Differences

Do you think good manners are an important way to act? What do you think are examples of good manners? Make a list in your notebook.

“Excuse me” is what we usually say if we belch (also known as burp). Now should you happen to be visiting the Inuit people or the Middle East, Korea or Hong Kong your belch would mean you like the food. It is considered a compliment on the meal.

When you are having a birthday party, do you open your gifts while your guests are there? In Colombia, India, Japan and Puerto Rico, it would be considered rude to open the gift in front of the giver.

How do you say yes or no with a head gesture? We usually move our head back and forth from left to right if we mean no. However, if we mean yes we move our head up and down. Guess what? It is the opposite in places like Iran, Turkey, and Greece. Check where you are before you shake your head for yes or no.

How do you point something out? Usually we use our finger. The Native Americans use their entire hand. In Indonesia, you would need to use your thumb to show someone where something is located.
