The ‘Talking about Cancer Service’ which is part of County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust, is looking for volunteers in Shildon to join the service. The Service seeks to raise awareness of the signs and symptoms of the most common cancers including bowel, breast and lung cancer. The Talking about Cancer (TAC) Team is looking for more volunteers to help work in local com-munities to increase the understanding about cancer

signs and symptoms and raise awareness of the NHS national screening programmes. Fiona McQuiston, Heath Improve-ment Lead for the Service for County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust said, “Approximately one in three people will develop some form of cancer in their lifetime. 50-75% of avoidable cancer deaths are due to the cancer being diagnosed in its late stages; being diagnosed early could save over 5,000

lives a year. That’s why raising awareness of the signs and symptoms is so important, if people know what to look out for and we remove some of that stigma about seeking help then we can really make a difference to a person’s chances of survival. If you are interested in vol-unteering, contact Donna McDermott, Health Im-provement Practitioner on 0800 783 4056 for further information.

Have your say on library changesPeople will have the chance to decide on new opening hours for Shildon’s Library from this week.A consultation on changes to opening times at libraries across County Durham begins on Monday 6th August and will run until Friday 28th September.People who use the mobile library service, which stops in 37 communities, will also be invited to give their views on where it should stop in the future.Durham County Council is reducing opening hours and changing its mobile service in response to significant Government funding reductions, which mean it has to save approx-imately £180m between 2011 – 2017.

Cllr Maria Plews, Durham County Council’s Cabinet member for leisure, libraries and lifelong learning, said, “By making changes to our library service we will be able to keep all our libraries open despite the financial pressures we are currently operating under.“It is important though that people who use the service are able to influence these changes so I would encourage residents to have their say during the consultation.”Library-users can fill in a survey at their local library, giving their choice of preferred hours from a number of options. These options have been put together to reflect factors

specific to each library, such as current busy times of day, market days and other issues. At those libraries where there will be only a small reduction in opening hours, one option will be similar to existing opening times.People who use the mobile library service should have received a questionnaire about which settlements they would like the library to visit in the future. Susan Bolam from Shildon Library commented, “Forms are available in the library giving three options for you to choose from, and you have from 6th August until 28th September to vote. Please call in and fill out a form as your decision is important.”

Kenworth Ltd, owners of the filling station at Redworth Road, have submitted a new outline planning application for 38 residential homes on land to the rear of the filling station. An original application was turned down in 2009 and a second, mixed-use applica-tion was also later refused. The new application comes after Durham County Council’s planning authority confirmed that a 100% residential scheme would be “an acceptable use in principle”.The new application

includes a proposal to provide 7 affordable houses. “Affordable housing is provided to meet the needs of those who are unable to buy or rent housing generally available on the open market”, says the planning application document. The proposal includes a mix of 2,3 and 4/5 bed houses with a play area and amenity area. The report has been submitted to Shildon Town Councillors for their views and observations by 17th August.

A fascinating discovery...This fascinating picture was uncovered during refurbish-ment work at Old Shildon Club recently. The picture itself is in remarkable condition, however the title and date have sustained some damage and are mostly

unreadable, with only the words “Old Shildon” and the name of the photogra-pher - “C Smithson of Main Street, Shildon”, being de-cipherable and possibly the word ‘Choir’. Judging from the abundance of handlebar

moustaches, however, here at the Crier we estimate that the picture dates from around the turn of the 20th century. Luckily, the names of the gentleman in the picture do remain in tact. (See below).

LettersHave your say...

Dear Editor,

I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who helped to make Chelsea’s fund day at Elm Road Club on 7th July a great sucess.

Also, everybody who generously gave up time to help. This includes many businesses who donated prizes for various stalls, friends, family and neighbours who helped on the day and anybody who gave money donations.

A big thank you to all. Especially my long-suffering Husband who has been great over the last year of preparation.

I hope it was an enjoyable day for all. It was good to see everyone enjoying themselves especially the children (and many parents) having fun with Punch and Judy. Chelsea enjoyed this very much. We raised £2,227.20 for Chelsea and I hope that this makes life a little easier.

There are a few raffle prizes unclaimed. These are;- Pink ticket 945- Purple ticket 818- Dark orange ticket 721- White ticket 543- Yellow ticket 448- White ticket 884- Green ticket 349- Yellow ticket 198.

Prizes will be available until 19th August. After that, they will be put into the next raffle. Please contact Anne Roche at 18 Elm Road if you have a winning ticket.

Thanks again to you all and we all wish Chelsea the best. There will be an auction, pie & peas and disco at Elm Road Club on 8th December. Tickets will be on sale next month and available from the address above.

Yours, Anne Roche, Elm Road.

MP for Bishop Auckland, Helen Goodman, has responded to the news that HSBC bank is closing its branch in Shildon. She said, “I am furious about the closure. Telephone and internet banking is not accessible to many older people. “I bank with HSBC and I am now planning to move my

account elsewhere. If HSBC cannot serve the people of Shildon in my constituency I do not wish to pay my monthly salary into HSBC.“When combined with the money laundering allegations at HSBC this suggests a bank which has completely lost all sense of purpose and responsibil-ity.”

Fifteen members of Shildon Railway Cricket Club are to walk the length of The Roman Wall raising money along the way for The Percy Hedley Foundation and the cricket club. The Percy Hedley Foundation is a charity for children and adults with cerebral palsy and speech, language and communica-tion difficulties, helping people with disabilities

get into sport. Organiser Andrew Paterson is looking for help from the local community. “Not only do we need sponsorship from individuals and businesses in our community but we need assistance in getting our group over to Bowness on Solway on the morning of Friday 14th September for an early start. Then again we need to get back to Shildon from Wallsend

Ferguson thunders to centuryShildon Railway Cricket Club 1st XI won its third consecutive league game on Saturday when they annihilated visitors Ushaw Moor. Batting first, the Rail-waymen’s innings was interrupted by a heavy thundery downpour but this did not deter opener Martin Ferguson, who hit ten fours and four sixes in a magnificent undefeated 104. He was ably supported by skipper Robert Nevison, who hit a quick fire 32 in a team total of 194 for the loss of six wickets. In reply the visitors struggled against the accuracy of Phil Garbutt, who took 3 for 18 in his spell of eleven overs, seven of which were maidens. However, with the weather closing in, Ushaw looked determined to bat until 7.30pm and achieve a draw. Enter Robert Nevison, who in taking three wickets

for one run in 1.5 overs, demolished the opposition, who were all out for 51.In the reverse fixture, the 2nd XI just lost out in a real thriller at Ushaw Moor. The hosts posted a formidable 218 for 7, with veteran Eric Stark making a century and Ellis Horner again demonstrating what a fine run of form he is in, taking 4 for 47 in twelve overs. Facing such a total when batting second, many sides are inclined to capitulate but Shildon showed true resilience and took the game down to the wire before falling just short, reaching 216 for 8. A. Paterson 65 not out, Thomas Moss 43 and E. Horner 36 being the main contributors. A spokesman for the club told the Crier, “We’re delighted with a great weekend of cricket and all this talk about our fundrais-ing walk along Hadrian’s Wall has fittingly brought

us two centurions.” [See article below].Earlier in the week the 2nd team’s League Cup hopes were dashed in the semi-final at Brandon. The home side made 114 all out in their allotted 20 overs, Ellis Horner taking 6 for 26.Shildon fell well short at 80 for 9 but things may well have been different if an injury suffered in the field by Thomas Moss had not prevented him from batting down the order at number nine, for when he did come to the crease he blasted four sixes in a hard hitting 37 not out. The Readers Durham County League now splits into two halves with the top five and bottom five teams playing a further four games over the course of the next five weeks. Shildon’s opposition next week will be Langley Park at home for the 1st XI, while the 2nd XI will play Langley Park away.

on the evening of Sunday 16th,” he told the Crier. “To complete the walk in three days, camping overnight en-route, is a big challenge, but we believe that we’re up to it. After all we’re raising money for two very worthy causes,“ added Andrew. If you can help in any way the group would be extremely grateful. Contact Andrew on 07808 222 615.

Heighington Boys Football Club which, in just under a month’s time, will open its brand new £65,000 clubhouse and changing rooms, is looking to expand by attracting new teams, coaches and players. The club is a small and friendly organisation which prides itself in creating the right environment to nurture up-and-coming talent, as well as providing a sound financial base to support them with that aim. The club currently has four teams at Under 10s, 12s, 13s and 17s playing within the TJFA and Russell Foster youth leagues. Specifically the club is seeking someone who would be able to start up, coach and run a development team.

The club also requires defensive and midfield players for their under 12s team, who play the new 9v9 format. The under 13s team, who currently play in the TJFA league, are also looking to bolster their playing squad and would welcome contact from interested players. The under 17 team is seeking a manager/coach who could commit to running the team for the forthcoming season, when they will be playing in the under 18 league. Anyone interested in becoming involved with the club should telephone Chairman, Mel Oakes for more details, on 07775 855 352.

Exciting times for village football team

As the Leagues draw to a close, the Men’s Team are in second place in Division two, just behind Shildon Rail A. The Town team had a 4-1 win at home against Darlington Woodlands B, which should keep them in close contention for the top spot. The Ladies remain 3rd in

their league after losing 1-3 at Richmond. The Vets had a 6-2 win at home against King George V from Durham. It was not a good week in the SW Durham mixed league where the A team lost 4-6 at home to Brandon while the B team were thrashed 0-10 away at Cockton Hill.
