Durham Constabulary has undertaken a campaign to raise awareness of the effects and consequences of criminal damage within our communities. The ‘Respect Your Street’ campaign will run through-out the summer and will look to educate offenders as to the impact of their actions on victims. It will highlight that, in addition to conventional sanctions which can be imposed (arrest, charge, court etc), other options will be con-sidered. This includes Durham Police working closely with social housing providers and other agencies to address issues. The possible sanctions being considered could affect the tenancies or benefits of persons involved in such crimes. Police will also look at using restorative approaches, which are also key to helping people understand the impact on people’s lives.Supt Kerrin Smith said, “The campaign is intended to reach out to offenders and potential offenders and bring home the impact of their offending behaviour, on both the victim and the communities in which they live. “County Durham and Dar-lington remain as some of

the safest and welcoming communities to live in and our intention is to take positive action and encour-age partnership working to ensure that this remains the case.“Nobody wants to live in an awful place and some of the mindless damage to

things like bus shelters and scratching a car do matter to people. “We want those who commit such crimes to take a real hard look at what they are doing and the impact this has on their friends, neighbours and family”.

More than 130 people are paying the price for com-mitting environmental offences in County Durham in March.Durham County Council’s neighbourhood protection team tackles issues includ-ing fly tipping, dog fouling, littering and anti-social behaviour. In March the team issued the following fixed penalty notices: • 89 for littering• 10 for dog fouling• 35 for failing to respond

to requests to clear untidy yards and gardens.

There were five prosecu-tions for non-payment of fixed penalty notices, issued for failing to respond to requests to

clear untidy yards and gardens, and eight pros-ecutions for non-payment of fines for littering. 145 advisory letters were also sent out to the owners of untidy properties and three for those who allowed dogs to stray. Ian Hoult, neighbourhood protection manager with Durham County Council, said, “We always aim to respond to concerns from within local communities and such environmental offences significantly impact upon and blight our villages, towns and rural areas.”Six offenders were also prosecuted for fly tipping offences. Fines have ranged in costs with one

offender being ordered to pay as much as £330.Ian added, “Fly tipping is a serious offence and we prosecute those who illegally dispose of their waste.“Householders have a duty of care to use a registered waste carrier to make sure rubbish is disposed of properly without being dumped. We investigate incidents to find evidence to link the fly tipping back to those who dump it.”All incidents of dog fouling, littering and fly tipping should be reported to the council by calling 03000 261 000. Forms are available online to report offences at www.durham.gov.uk.

Three pupils at Saint John’s Primary School in Shildon became world changers over the Easter holiday. Megan Paterson, along with her sister Imogen and friend Faye Stokoe, spent time baking and selling cookies to raise funds for the street children of the Philippines. Deputy Head Christine

Johnston described the girls, whose actions were completely spontaneous as ‘three lovely people who even as primary children already care enough about the world they are in to want to make the bad bits good.’ Megan then wrote an article for school news-letter to say the ‘thank you

to everyone who helped us.’ Revd. David, in receiv-ing the £15.60 raised said, that the girls were “an example and inspiration to us all. Care in action”, he added, “is what changes the world, and makes it a happier, more loved place for all of us to share from Shildon to Manila.”

A masked teenager, al-legedly high on drink and drugs, broke into a Shildon women’s home.James Latcham and an ac-complice, both wearing balaclavas and carrying BB guns, forcefully entered the property after the women answered a knock on the rear door, at approximately 3pm on Thursday 20th February.Durham Crown Court had heard that the 19-year-old had threatened the women with a machete, holding the blade to her throat whilst saying, “Give me your money and everything you’ve got.”Paul Reid, prosecuting, told the court with ‘consider-able fortitude’ the women grabbed the machete by the blade, cutting her hand. In a struggle Latcham had then pushed the

women against a kitchen worktop and grabbed her by the throat repeating his demand, at which time the women kicked a cupboard to attract the attention of her partner who was else-where in the house. The other youth then stepped in and then threatened to shoot her, to which she replied, “If you’re going to shoot us, then shoot us”. The pistol was then pointed towards her and with a click released only air.The women’s partner then entered the room armed with a baseball bat, warning them to, “Get off her”, at which point they ran off, but they claimed that they would be back.Eight days later Latcham was arrested and his shoes were seized, enabling a match to be made with against a footprint lifted

outside the victim’s home. The accomplice has yet to be apprehended.John Turner, mitigating, had told the court that he committed the offences under the influence of drink and drugs. He targeted the house because he believed there were drugs present on the premises, going there only to feed his craving. Mr Tuner added whilst in custody Latcham has begun to overcome his drug addic-tion, with the support of his family.Latcham, of Chestnut Avenue in Spennymoor, admitted to aggravated burglary, attempted robbery and to possessing a bladed article in public.Judge Christopher Prince imposed an eight-year cus-todial sentence, to start in a young offenders’ institu-tion.

Brett Thomas Pearce, of Close House, pleaded guilty to a charge of using threatening words and behaviour, when he appeared before magis-trates at Newton Aycliffe.Recently the 22 year -old, who was not rep-resented, told the court that £80 had been taken from his flat and that he had split up with his girlfriend on the day of the offence, Saturday 12th April. At 6.20pm that evening, officers attended Pearce’s home in response to a call from a member of the public. Sounds of trouble came from the flat and a P.C., on entering, found Pearce to be in drink and agitated. This worsened the situation and Pearce threatened

to “kick off” and stated that he wanted to “go to jail.” He then began to swear and abuse the officer and this continued even after the officer had returned to the street. Pearce then slammed his door shut but the officer became concerned for his safety when he heard Pearce punching the wall, so he returned to the property. Young children had gathered in the street outside and Pearce then had to be arrested, as he had become more abusive and aggressive.Magistrates described the events as a “sorry state of affairs” before sentencing Pearce to a twelve month conditional discharge and ordering him to pay costs of £85 and £15 victim support surcharge.

Shildon Railway Cricket Club has endured a frus-trating start to the 2014 season with the weather causing the cancellation of three games and more dis-appointingly, two games having to be forfeited when, first the Under 11s and then the Under 18s could not muster enough players to fulfil fixtures at Bishop Auckland. “The weather prevented us from holding some of our outdoor junior practice sessions when we had hoped to have attracted some new youngsters to the fold. We are now

really anxious to attract more juniors to play in our Under 11s, 13s, 15s and 18s but are at a loss as to what more we can do. We know that several youngsters intend to play in the weeks ahead but currently they are com-mitted to football, rugby and boxing,” said a club spokesman. This weekend sees the 1st XI at Murton, with the 2nd XI at home in the reverse fixture. On Monday the Under 15s entertain Evenwood and on Tuesday the Under 18s are also at home, to Tudhoe.
