WTIU Sponsors A Chorus Line at the IU AuditoriumWTIU is a proud sponsor of A Chorus Line, coming to the IU Auditorium on Tuesday and Wednesday, November 16 & 17 at 8pm.

Before the days of reality shows such as American Idol and So You Think You Can Dance, thousands of young hopefuls flocked to a singular city—New York—praying for a big break in a Broadway show. Nine-time Tony Award winner, A Chorus Line shares the journeys of 17 would-be “triple threats.” These actor-singer-dancers have worked their entire careers to get to this point: not a shot at super-stardom, but a chance to get a paying job in a professional show that just might lead to something else. One by one, each of the 17 comes forward—some reluctantly, some with gusto—ultimately revealing far more than can be conveyed in a résumé through desperate, funny, powerful, and poignant songs that include “I Hope I Get It,” “Sing,” “I Felt Nothing,” and “Dance: Ten; Looks: Three.”

Ticket information is available at iuauditorium.com or by calling (812) 855-1103.

The Friday Zone Introduces New Host, Starts 11th SeasonFridays at 4:30pm; Saturdays at 10am

Crousore is a sophomore in the IU Department of Theatre and Drama who has been cast in IU plays that include Blood Brothers and Take Me Out. He is also a substitute teacher at the Prep School Academy, and said he has always had a passion for working with kids. “I am looking so forward to being the newest co-host on The Friday Zone,” Taylor said. “I’m a native to Bloomington, so I grew up watching The Friday Zone. It’s a total honor to now be hosting the show.” The Friday Zone is a weekly children’s television show produced by WTIU. The show’s target audience is children between the ages of 8-11 and features a variety of local guests, exciting projects, and a different spotlight show every week. The program encourages kids to learn about their world in fun and interesting ways. For more information visit fridayzone.org.

Celebrating John LennonAs the world remembers John Lennon on what would have been his 70th birthday, and the 30th anniversary of his death, WTIU and PBS will air three specials on the former Beatle.

Masterpiece Contemporary: Lennon Naked

Sunday, November 21 at 9pm

Christopher Eccleston (Doctor Who) portrays the legendary icon in the drama Lennon Naked, focusing on the turbulent period of change in John Lennon’s professional and personal life, following the unexpected death of Beatles manager Brian Epstein in 1967. This new era is marked by Lennon’s extraordinary relationship with Yoko Ono and his disillusion-ment with Britain, ultimately causing Lennon to pursue a new life in New York.

American Masters: LENNONYCMonday, November 22 at 9pm

LENNONYC is the story of one of the most famous and influential artists of the 20th century and how he found redemption not in the public adoration he craved as a youth, but in the quiet and simple pleasures of fatherhood. It is also a New York immigrant’s tale. Lennon came to New York City in 1971 seeking what every other immigrant has sought: freedom—the freedom to be himself and not “Beatle John,” the freedom to live a normal life.

• Beyond Broadcast: American Masters is providing a series of free “episodes” featuring slightly edited interviews conducted for LENNONYC. The episodes will be posted weekly every Thursday up to November 22 and features family and friends of John Lennon. Content can be found at pbs.org/americanmasters or on iTunes, keyword LENNONYC.

WFIU-FM Radio Highlights NEA Opera Honors Gala Sunday, November 14, 9 p.m.

From the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. comes the 2010 National Endowment for the Arts Opera Honors awards ceremony. The NEA Opera Honors pays tribute to those creators, performers, and other interpreters who have made a lasting contribution on our national cultural landscape. Now in its third year, the NEA Opera Honors is the highest award our nation bestows in opera. NEA Opera Honors recipients are nominated by the public and chosen by an NEA-convened panel of opera experts. In addition to an awards ceremony, the designation includes a one-time grant award of $25,000. This year’s honors go to: soprano Martina Arroyo, Michigan Opera Theatre director David DiChiera, composer Philip Glass, and music director of the Opera Orchestra of New York Eve Queler.

Radiolab: “Animal Minds”Sunday, November 21, 4 p.m.

Radiolab is an experiential investigation that explores themes and ideas through a patchwork of people, sounds, and stories. The show is for listeners who demand skepticism but appreciate wonder; who are curious about the world, but also want to be moved and surprised. In this hour, we explore what science can say about what goes on in the minds of animals. When we gaze into the eyes of our beloved pets, can we ever really know what they’re thinking? Is it naïve to assume they might be experiencing something close to the emotions we feel? Or, on the contrary, is it ridiculous to assume that they aren’t feeling anything back? Your hosts are Jad Abumrad and Robert Krulwich.

Saving Places: Preserving Indiana’s Architectural HeritageMonday, November 29 at 8pm

There are dozens of important historic places in Indiana that are constantly threatened by sprawl, obsolescence, and lack of official protection. Others are disappearing before our eyes by abandonment, neglect, and deterioration. But we can be encouraged, because there are many places in our state where people decided to work together to preserve unique historic sites. Produced by WTIU in cooperation with Indiana Landmarks Foundation of Indiana, Saving Places tells the stories of individuals who are engaged in revitalizing, protecting, and preserving our historic places in Indiana. This video documentary tells the stories of four sites from across Indiana: Wilson Bridge near Delphi; The John Jay Center for Learning in Portland; Lyles Station School near Princeton; and the Maple Grove Road Historic District near Bloomington.

Today, historic preservation is much more about the future than about the past. Saving our historic landmarks helps us build meaningful communities for the future. It also helps us provide a place for those who come after us in which they will understand and appreciate the special culture of Indiana. Saving Places focuses on the positives of “community-building” and the economic growth that successful preservation can engender for the city or council involved in the preservation effort. Viewers will see the astounding transformations and find out what inspires people to get involved. What actions were taken? What obstacles were faced or are still being faced? All of the projects required organization, commitment, passion, and energy. While there are similarities—each story is different. More information will be available after November 15th at indianapublicmedia.org/savingplaces
