Houston Grand Opera: Don GiovanniSaturday, November 23, 1 p.m.

Gustave Flaubert, author of Madame Bovary, claimed, “The three finest things God ever madeare the sea, Hamlet, and Mozart’s Don Giovanni.”

Themes of power, seduction, and punishment are at the heart of the opera; how Don Giovanni wrestles with these themes is the driving force behind all the dramatic action. The Austrian baritone Adrian Eröd plays the fabled libertine, Kyle Ketelsen plays Leporello, and Rachel Willis-Sørensen is Donna Anna.

The conductor is Trevor Pinnock, known worldwide as a harpsichordist and conductor who pioneered performance on historical instruments with the orchestra he founded, The English Concert.

Thanksgiving with CantusThursday, November 28, 8 p.m.

Acclaimed by Fanfare as “the premier men’s vocal ensemble in the United States,” Cantus is renowned for adventurous pro- gramming spanning many periods and genres, including work com- missioned specifically for the group. Join Cantus for an hour of songs and storytelling on the themes of gratitude and giving thanks.

As an artist-led ensemble, the nine members of Cantus rehearse and perform without a conductor or music director. Each piece is assigned to one of the singers to produce. The producer is responsible for interpretation and quality control on notes, rhythms, tuning, and vowel choice. By the time a piece is on stage, each singer has had his chance to help build the performance.

Alison Young, classical music host at Minnesota Public Radio, hosts.

WTIU Pays Tribute To President John F. Kennedy

JFK: American Experience Part One: Monday, November 11 at 9pm; Sunday, November 17 at 1pm Part Two: Tuesday, November 12 at 9pm; Sunday, November 17 at 3pm

Forever enshrined in myth by an assassin’s bullet, John F. Kennedy’s presidency has often defied objective appraisal. This new portrait offers a fresh assessment of the man, his accomplishments and his unfulfilled promise. JFK features interviews with Kennedy family members and historians including Robert Dallek, Robert Caro, and Evan Thomas.

NOVA: Cold Case JFKWednesday, November 13 at 9pm; Thursday, November 14 at 1pm

Fifty years later, what can science tell us about the Kennedy assassination—and the investigations that followed? The murder, in broad daylight in front of hundreds of witnesses, was a homicide investigator’s best-case scenario. Yet somehow the JFK assassination became a forensic nightmare. Now, NOVA follows a group of experts trying to unravel the lingering mysteries of the assassination.

Secrets of the Dead: JFK: One PM Central Standard TimeWednesday, November 13 at 10pm

This program recounts the riveting story of the reporting from Dallas and the New York CBS Newsroom from the moment President Kennedy was shot until Cronkite’s emotional pronouncement of his death at 1:00 p.m. CST. The program features moving memories from the producers, writers and reporters who were there on the day.

FRONTLINE: Who Was Lee Harvey Oswald?Tuesday, November 19 at 10pm

FRONTLINE’s investigative team spent more than a year re-examining Oswald’s life and sifting through the psychological, political and forensic evidence of his role in the assassination. The team uncovered new witnesses, documents, photographs, video and audio recordings of Lee Oswald, many of which had never before been made public.
