    DETROIT, Mich. - Detroit

    area favorite Harry Sullins

    ended a 15-year winless dry

    spell in the resurrected PBA

    Senior World Championship.

    Sullins, who won his fifth

and last PBA Tour title in 1994

    in Windsor Locks, Conn.,

    defeated Hugh Miller of

    Mercer Island, Wash., 222-

    192, for a $15,000 prize, his

first PBA Senior Tour title and

a berth of his own in the

    Tournament of Champions.

    The PBA Senior World

    Championship was resurrected

as a part of the new PBA

    World Series of Bowling after

    lying dormant since 2002.

    "It feels great," Sullins said.

"I'll be glad to go back to theTournament of Champions."

    Sullins admitted to being nerv-

ous. "It's been almost 11 years

    between TV shows, 15 years

since I've won a title. You try to

stay as calm as you can," he said.

"Some guys might say they don't

get butterflies, but I don't care

who you are - you get 'em. The

    question is, how much pressure

can you take and still move your

feet, swing your arm, roll the ball

and hit what you're throwing at?

    It worked out.

"The difference was I made all

    my spares," he continued. "That

keeps the pressure on. It kept me19-20 pins ahead the whole

match. I threw two strikes in a

row twice early in the game and

that was huge. I could tell Hugh

was trying to figure out which

ball to use, so I kept telling

myself, just get a double, and for-

tunately I was able to do that."

Sullins felt like the title was his

for the taking after he was warm-

ly greeted by the Detroit area fans

attending the finals in a center

where he had honed his game for

    years.

    "I've bowled at Thunderbowl

    for 30 years," the Chesterfield

    Township, Mich., resident said,

"but when we came out for the

    introductions, I actually had the

fans with me. That was so pleas-

ing. It was like it's my time to

    win."

    It was also rewarding because

    he made a less-than-satisfying

debut on the Senior Tour a year

    earlier.

"I wanted to come out full

    blast last year," the 52-year-

    old Michigan native said. "I

had big goals - rookie of the

year, all of that - but I went

out to the west coast and did-

n't do so well. In the Senior

U.S. Open I threw my elbow

out, so I wound up missing

the whole balance of the sea-

    son.

"This year I had a different

    outlook. I wanted to start

    strong in Jackson (Mich.), but

    I got a job with the U.S.

    Census Bureau. I hadn't had a

job in three years, so I decid-

ed the seniors could wait. I

    wound up staying home and

bowling in the RegionalPlayers Championship at

    Thunderbowl, which gave me an

edge to get ready for the Senior

Tour and for the World Series. In

the six Senior Tour events I did

    bowl, I had four championship

    round appearances including a

win and a second. So I'm happy."

The opening event of the PBA's

    2009-10 season on ESPN also

    included a PBA Trick Shot

Invitational, won by PBA Hall of

    Famer Norm Duke of Clermont,

Fla. Duke performed a series of

trick shots to top a field including

    fellow Hall of Famers Parker

Bohn III and Brian Voss, PBAchampions Chris Barnes and

    Sean Rash, and Finland's two-

    handed sensation, Osku

    Palermaa, for a $5,000 prize.

    Idle bowling thoughts.

    ...A team's lineup positions

    can be very important. All-

    time great Parker Bohn III

    feels that your leadoff individ-

ual should be a deadly spare

    shooter, one that can mark

when it counts most and one

that can spark the spirit of ateam. The anchor, or final

bowler in the lineup, should be

    your best all-around bowler,

    but not necessarily the one

with the highest average. A top

anchor can hit the pocket when

the pressure is on, is a good

solid spare bowler, but one bet-

ter known for coming up with

that strike or two when needed

    in a tight game.

...There is no such thing as an

easy spare, unless it's the one

you don't have to face because

    you got a strike.

...Did you know that up until

    1994, from 1958, pro bowlers

had to follow strict limits on

the length of hair, pony tails,

    braids and beards.

...In the more than 50 years

that pro bowling has been on

    TV, the happening causing the

most comment was not a big

    win, not a particular match,

not a perfect game, but Mark

    Roth's first ever TV conversion

    of the 7-10 split.

    ...You hear about the 300

games rolled in bowling. But a

real rarity in bowling is a 291

game, and the rarest of them

all in the upper category is a

    292 game.

    ...When you discuss smooth

bowlers the name of the late Joe

    Joseph comes to mind most

often. For a fairly big man, he

moved to the line with all the

    grace and balance of dancing

    legend Fred Astaire. One big

    difference, Joseph carried a

heavy bowling ball, not a light

    hat or cane.

    ...Bowling does have some

    power to make people much

    more attentive to dates. The

    same people who make medical

    and business matter appoint-

    ments mere days in advance

    often enter bowling tourna-

ments two years prior to the

    competition.

...The move to Texas by most

    integers in bowling will take

    time, particularly such attrac-

    tions as the International

    Bowling Hall of Fame and

Museum, but it has to be one of

    the most forward thinking

bowling ideas in the history of

    the sport.

    ...The more you study bowling

    history the more you realize

that the negative of bowling has

    been expanded and repeated

    much more than the more

    prevalent positives of the sport-

    --at every level.

    ...Eighteen years ago John

Petraglia was asked who he saw

as the future stars. His selec-

    tions were Parker Bohn III,

    Dave Ozio, Amleto Monacelli,

Pete Weber, Brian Voss and Del

Ballard. That's what you call a

    super crystal ball. All became

top stars and all but Ballard

have been elected to the PBA

Hall of Fame, and he should

gain that honor in the near

    future.

    ...The good old days were

when you were pretty sure you

    could bowl your weight.

...The head pin of a bowling

    setup probably has more

    strange remarks directed to it

    than any other inanimate object

    in the world.

    ...Any league secretary or

    tournament director will tell

you that the people who know

all the bowling rules and let you

know they do are not nearly as

bad as the bowlers who think

    they know all the rules.

    J o a n T a y l o r s T e n P i n R a p . . . .Last week Guy and I attended

    and worked at the Metropolitan

    Bowling Writers 47th Annual

Awards lunch, a highlight of the

    Convention. The three-day con-

vention can be called Bowl Expo

Lite as it features seminars, par-

ties, a trade show, and our awards

ful event, especially since its only

Gary De Boer, 26, saw his first

800 series in grand style. He rolled

    279-300 (his third)-298 for an 877,

a house record at Boonton Lanes.

This was in the Dr. Riverside

League. A 15-year veteran of the

sport, Gary started bowling as a

youngster when he saw his parents,

    George and Linda, enjoying their

leagues. After his 279 and then 300

he felt confident about the possibil-

ity of an octo-series, but not nerv-

ous. I felt I had a pretty good shot.

I was in the zone. Its not surpris-ing in that he earned a Junior

    Bowlers Tour (JBT) title in

Oakland in 1997, a difficult feat at

best. Two years ago his team won

    the Dr. Riverside League.

As you know, time flies whether

you are having fun or not. It may

seem a little soon to be pushing the

    tenth annual Pro Image Bowling

Camp, but based on last years par-

ticipation, this could sell out early.

This three-day camp will be held

    at Rockaway Lanes, scheduled for

    Friday through Sunday, July 30-

August 1, 2010. Total cost with taxis $615.25. So for about $25 per

hour what do the students get?

    What dont they get!

A partial list includes: hours of

    on-lane instruction and bowling on

league and sport patterns with pre-

    mier certified coaches (three are

gold level, of which there are only

35 on the entire planet), classroom

    presentations, mental game, a cus-

tom plan of practice, a computer

    analysis of mechanics CD with

    voice commentary for each bowler,

    and everything from grip analysis

    to understanding equipment. Lunch

is included as well. Each day starts

at 8:30 a.m. and ends at 5 p.m. Atthe conclusion of the third day, one

student will have won the opportu-

nity to bowl a TV-style match

    against the camps visiting pro

(TBD). In the past such names as

Parker Bohn III, Rhino Page, Jason

    Couch, Chris Barnes, Pete Weber,

    Johnny Petraglia and Ryan Shafer

    have appeared, working one-on-

one with the bowlers and answer-

ing questions about their pro tour

    experiences.

    Camp director and gold coach

    Ken Yokobosky says, Last year

the camp sold out early. Reserve

    now to guarantee your spot.
