    2 SPORTS REPORTER November 14 - 20, 2012

The pros are and should bevery welcome. They really arefine athletes.

What makes a good pro?In fully evaluating pro bowlers

you can't use money winnings asthe only guide. Scoring averagescan be deceiving too becausethey aren't always what theyseem.

Pros bowl primarily to earnmoney. That is number one. Theaim of every sport is to scorewell, so that is important too.

Yet, a pro bowler can finishhigh in total earnings by winningor placing high in the morelucrative events, even if failingbadly in others.

As to scoring, some bowlersare shirkers. When they're fardown in the standings, they

merely go through the motionsin their final games or frames. This lowers their overall averageand doesn't reflect the true abili-ty they show when higher in thehunt.

Other bowlers shoot for everypin in every game as though itmeant a title, and some bowlersrack up big scores when all theymean is a boost in average. There really is no right or wrongin either type of bowler. Mostshirkers don't do it on purpose, and the never say die bowlersknow of no other way to play thegame.

This all evolves through habitor because of inborn personalitytraits, the things that make upbowlers, as all people, and makethem different. In charting a probowler it is necessary to take intoconsideration his athletic ability, personality, clutch talent, andattitude on winning and losing.

Timing, and maybe a littleluck, is important.

If a bowler could save his bestscores for the events paying

$100,000 or more for first, hecould have a big year with fewwins.

In some events it takes a 250average to win. In others, 220

does the job. Any decent pro canaverage up to 220 on a givenweek. And over the season, rolling on various lane condi-tions, moving on lanes, in differ-ent surroundings, the top prosaverage from 220 to 229.

Don't confuse that with themany house bowlers who aver-age much more than that, bowl-ing each week on the same lanesin league play where the easiestscoring conditions prevail.

That's no knock on them. Youbowl with the equipment youhave on the conditions you meetor choose. Realistically, bowlers

can be informally rated much asgolfers, on different pars for dif-ferent courses, with estimatedbowling pars on varying laneconditions.

The only real consistent thingabout bowling is the inconsisten-cies, particularly in scoring.Every bowler feels that his game, night, or tournament is coming.Putting the performance in theright place is another matter. It'swhat dreams are made of.

When it comes time to ratingthe pros, don't forget theunknown factors previouslymentioned. Do remember, they

are without doubt the greatestbowlers in the world, particular-ly when you look at their recordsfor more than 1,000 games intournament play each year. They can score on any type of lane condition and under themost stressful and trying physi-cal and mental situations.

Overall, most bowlers couldn'tperform the way top pros do---even on a pinball machine thatwon't tilt.

Bettis' team, the Motor CityMuscle, will be at home inDetroit for the first PBAL event.Fagan is Bettis' franchise player.

I am excited to be partneringwith the PBA and its newLeague. I feel this is a fantasticopportunity to be a owner of theMotor City Muscle," said Bettis, whose charitable organization

The Bus Stops Here Foundation benefits youth s. "Bowl ing fansnot only get to see me but theyalso get to see Mike Fagan andsome great team bowling. PBAfans deserve the best and thisseason we will give them the

best and a ch ance to enjoy everymoment."

PBA Commissioner Tom Clark said it was fitting that Paul andBettis were the first team ownersto sign on in support of thePBAL, followed quickly byOwens and Hart.

"Chris and Jerome have beengreat ambassadors for bowlingfor many years and bring awealth of business acumen, laud-

able charitable efforts and win-ning personalities to the PBA,"Clark said. "Plus, they are reallygood bowlers themselves. Theylove the game."

Owens team will be the DallasStrikers and his franchise player will be Norm Duke, who grewup in the Dallas area before mov-ing to Florida. Duke has coached

avid-bowler Owens on the lanes.Harts team will be thePhiladelphia Hitmen and hisfranchise player will be BillONeill who lives in nearbyLanghorne, Pa.

Other celebrity team owners, nicknames and franchise player designations will be announcedsoon. Details on the Leaguestructure, formats and PBADetroit Winter Swing can befound on pba.com.

Many of the celebrity teamowners will have a chance toshow off their bowling skills, alongside their franchise player counterparts, in the Chris PaulPBA League All Stars special

event which will air on ESPN onSuper Bowl Sunday, Feb. 3, at 4

p.m. ET.PBA CEO Geoff Reiss said the

new League will improve thePBA's relationship with sponsorsand fans.

"Current and prospective cor- pora te partners of the PBA willrealize unique and valuable

opportunities with the League,"Reiss said. "Television audi-ences will see more PBA playerscompete in a team atmosphereand in a longer, two-hour timeslot."

While the PBA has been a pre-dominantly individual-achieve-ment sports association, team

bowling has a grea t histo ry andfuture in the game. Most of thetwo million United StatesBowling Congress certifiedleague bowlers compete in ateam environment in more than4,000 Bowling ProprietorsAssociation of America-member

    bowling c enter s."The famed 1950s Budweiser

teams with Don Carter and Dick Weber set standards for excel-lence in sports," Reiss said."Today, high school and colle-giate bowling are on the rise, with the next generation com-fortable with teamwork on thelanes."

The PBA World Series of Bowling and PBA WorldChampionship, PBA Tournamentof Champions, U.S. Open,USBC Masters, the WorldTenpin Bowling AssociationsPBA International Tour seriesand other PBA events includingits regional and PBA50 Tourswill continue to highlight indi-vidual players.
